2 Samuel 19:1-4 ESV
Mourning
It was told Joab, “Behold, the king is weeping
and mourning for Absalom.” 2 So the victory
that day was turned into mourning for all the
people, for the people heard that day, “The
king is grieving for his son.” 3 And the people
stole into the city that day as people steal in
who are ashamed when they flee in battle. 4
The king covered his face, and the king cried
with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O
Absalom, my son, my son!”
2 Samuel 19:5-6 ESV
Confrontation
5 Then Joab came into the house to the king
and said, “You have today covered with shame
the faces of all your servants, who have this day
saved your life and the lives of your sons and
your daughters and the lives of your wives and
your concubines, 6 because you love those who
hate you and hate those who love you. For you
have made it clear today that commanders and
servants are nothing to you, for today I know that
if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead
today, then you would be pleased.
2 Samuel 19:7-8 ESV
Confrontation
7 Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to
your servants, for I swear by the Lord, if you do not
go, not a man will stay with you this night, and this
will be worse for you than all the evil that has come
upon you from your youth until now.” 8 Then the king
arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people
were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.”
And all the people came before the king.

Restoration
9 And all the people were arguing throughout
all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king
delivered us from the hand of our enemies and
saved us from the hand of the Philistines, and
now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.
10 But Absalom, whom we anointed over us,
is dead in battle. Now therefore why do you
say nothing about bringing the king back?”
2 Samuel 19:11-13 ESV
Restoration
11 And King David sent this message to Zadok
and Abiathar the priests: “Say to the elders of
Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the
king back to his house, when the word of all
Israel has come to the king? 12 You are my
brothers; you are my bone and my flesh. Why
then should you be the last to bring back the
king?’ 13 And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my
bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more
also, if you are not commander of my army from
now on in place of Joab.’”
2 Samuel 19:14-15 ESV
Restoration
14 And he swayed the heart of all the men of
Judah as one man, so that they sent word to
the king, “Return, both you and all your
servants.” 15 So the king came back to the
Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the
king and to bring the king over the Jordan.

16 All Scripture is breathed
out by God and profitable
for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, and for training
in righteousness, 17 that
the man of God may be
complete, equipped for
every good work.
Perspective
• Everything is in the light of: 2 Samuel 12:10
(ESV) 10 Now therefore the sword shall never
depart from your house, because you have
despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah
the Hittite to be your wife.’
• Civil War between David and his son Absalom.
This has been brewing for 20 years and ends
with Absalom’s death in 979 BC.
• The civil war has stretched for four years
primarily because David didn’t want anyone to
kill his son.
What group or groups has God placed in
your life that you are responsible for
stewarding in a way that increases the trust
they place in you?
Hope evaporates in an environment that
knows everything that is wrong and nothing
of how to make it right.

Editor's Notes

  • #10 Love those restoration shows…
  • #13 Still reaping the rewards of his sin… There has to be a physical and mental toll that mounts over the years when your own son is trying to kill you. There has to be a part of David who is blaming himself for this…looking in the mirror, put the kid in a very tough situation. At the same time he is in charge of a lot of people here and there comes a point where you have to make the “best, bad choice.” As a coach, I will work with a kid and try to get him on the right track all the way up until the point where he starts pulling others down, then we have to make a change.
  • #14 Restored: God’s leaders steward opportunities to increase the trust others place in them. Team is easy Family Group at work Friends
  • #15 Acting like they lost…what? - No hope in their faces after seeing David’s face…
  • #16 Coaching School…wow… Tried to pout :-( Really opened up my eyes to how blessed I am and how great God is… I have some great Coaches who are doing some great things here and it has nothing to do with me, which is exactly what I needed to see.
  • #17 Little different than the time that Nathan confronted him :-), didn’t draw it out, he hammered it out. Saturday vs. 4th Down and you have to know the difference. The people are about to be gone, he doesn’t have time to wait for David to figure anything out. “You have to call the next play.” Lays out what is going on in a very logical way. Lays out how illogical David is being right now…why would you slash the other three tires?
  • #18 This is how close he was to losing the kingdom and the trust of everyone… Coming to the same gate they saw David pouting earlier and find a “restored” David :-). Still has to deal with the sin that Nathan promised would follow him.
  • #19 Restored: God’s leaders steward opportunities to increase the trust others place in them.
  • #21 This is how poor a job David had done in stewarding his relationships with his people…they were not sure if they even wanted the “pouty pants” back. They remember how he was at one point, but they have seen a distinct change in him as a leader…
  • #22 Starts investing in the leaders…have to get them running in the right direction first. Clear-hold-build Makes a bad choice here…seems to be a move in the right direction but ultimately undercuts his long term authority :-(.
  • #23 Alignment is gigantic :-)
