Sabemos que las leyendas urbanas son relatos pertenecientes al folclore contemporáneo. En realidad son mitos basados en sucesos que supuestamente habrían ocurrido, pero quien te las cuenta, las ha tomado como verdaderos.
Estas contienen ficciones que dizque ocurrieron o pueden ocurrir en ciudades o pueblos conocidos. Su fantástica trama se narra de un modo que pueda crear la sensación de que realmente sucedió.
En algunos casos se trata de un tipo de creencia popular, muchas veces cargadas de superstición, que, pese a contener elementos inverosímiles o sobrenaturales, es presentado como hechos reales sucedidos en estos tiempos y delante de nuestras propias narices.
Otras parten de hechos reales que son exagerados, distorsionados o mezclados con datos ficticios o con las fabulosas convicciones que crea el inconsciente colectivo y que circulan oralmente o por los medios masivos. Se estima que las leyendas urbanas, nacen de la necesidad que tiene todo ser humano de una cuota de ficción en su vida, o de transformar una insoportable realidad por la fantasía cuando esta se hace insufrible, por ser demasiada cierta.
La condición para que las leyendas urbanas sean transmitidas, es que sean entretenidas en su contenido y que algunas veces estén acompañadas de violencia o grosería para ser aceptadas y apetecidas porque así lo exige el morbo de la gente.
