American photographer and environmentalist Ansel Adams was born in 1902 and was known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West. He co-founded the influential photography group ƒ64 with Dorothea Lange and Edward Weston, and invented the zone system for controlling tones with Fred Archer, which helped establish photography as a fine art.
