Fingerprint scanners work by capturing an image of a fingerprint using either an optical or capacitive sensor. An optical scanner uses a charge-coupled device similar to a digital camera to record the light and dark pixels of a fingerprint image. A capacitive scanner detects ridges and valleys of a fingerprint through capacitance changes on its sensor surface. The scanner then converts the analog fingerprint image into a digital format that can be analyzed and compared to stored fingerprints to authenticate identity.
