Fingerprint scanners work by obtaining an image of a fingerprint using either an optical or capacitive scanner and analyzing the unique ridge and valley patterns, called minutiae, to determine if it matches fingerprints stored in the system. The scanners use complex algorithms to recognize fingerprints based on the relative positions of minutiae, similar to recognizing constellations by star positions. While fingerprint scanners provide identification, a risk is damage from stolen identity information.
