Morality deals about the rightness or
wrongness of a human conduct,
attitiude, character, manners and
behavior in accordance with the
accepted norm of the society

Etymology and Definition

Etymology
Morality > Latin> mos, moris which means custom
Custom - a more or less permanent moral
behavior in accordance with the precepts of the
natural law which is universally known and
common to all men.
For instance, telling the truth, honoring one’s
parents, respecting life, respecting the property of
others, extra judicial killing, abortion
Morality – is all about the rightness and
wrongness of an action in relation to a standard
or norm of conduct, or it has something to do
with quality of human conduct, behavior, attitude

Since Morality has something to do with
quality of human conduct, (rightness of
human conduct = good = moral; wrongness
of human conduct = bad/evil = immoral;
neither good or evil = amoral), it leads to the
idea of [conduct, behavior, attitude] a action
such as moral, immoral and amoral act.
MORAL = good act
IMMORAL = evil act
AMORAL = the action is neither good or evil
(the action is not good or evil; it is
simply termed as indifferent

Michael Pennock provides us a brief
elaboration of the three important
elements in this definition.
As a science – for the more human
knowledge expands, the more refined
mankind’s moral can become; the more
we learn about ourselves, the more we
learn what is right from what is wrong.

CHRISTIAN MORALITY
It is concerned in identifying and explaining the
principles that determine the quality of human
behavior in the light of Christian revelation.
It disposes the human person to pattern one’s
behavior to the life of Jesus in loving and humble
service of the Father and entire humankind.
Jesus taught us in his words and deeds the two
greatest commandments – to love God and to love
one’s neighbor, and this one can only be carried out
through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
CATHOLIC MORALITY
It is a Christian Morality guided by the
teachings of the Church.
“ A Catholic faithful believes that Jesus
entrusted his teaching authority to the
Church and that the Church has the
responsibility to offer guidance, help and
direction in the solving of moral
problems.”

The natural law, the Catholic Church
teaches, is the basis for legitimate
human or positive law. The moral law
presupposes the rational order,
established among creatures for their
good and to serve their final end, by the
power, wisdom, and goodness of the
Creator. It is the foundation of universal
ethic.

Conscience

Conscience is a practical judgment of
reason deciding upon an individual act
as good as to be performed and evil as
to be avoided.
This is our ability to make practical
decision in light of ethical values and
principles.
The voice of conscience is always

evil.

outlines the basic purpose or
importance of Morality.
For him, Morality is:
1. a guide to the fullness of freedom
2. the entrance of the eternal into the
life of man
3. a guide to the fullness of human
development
4. a guide towards reality
5. a guide toward meaning

1. A guide to the fullness of freedom
Morality reveals the ultimate
purpose of human freedom. The ultimate
meaning of freedom is to live in accord
with natural law. Human is oriented
towards the development of mature
responsibility and commitment. Man
grows as a free individual when he
gradually becomes committed to
persons and causes. Man is meant to use
his freedom in order to grow to this state
of mature responsibility, a state of full
development.

2. The entrance of the eternal into the
life of man
Morality plays an important role in
raising man’s life to the level of the
eternal, that is, man can discover
eternity by raising his life above the
passing needs of time by living in terms
of eternal values. Values such as bravery,
justice, love, truth, beauty etc., rose
above time and forever.

3. A guide to the fullness of human development
Morality is not just a matter of external restrictions or
prohibitions but an inner law which leads man and communities
toward growth.
I grow, as a human individual, I become mature and responsible in
life, functioning fully as a member of the family and community and
moving towards this realization.

4. A guide towards reality
Morality reveals to man his identity as limited,
dependent and a being related to others.

5. A guide toward meaning
Morality leads man into a
more meaningful existence. Man can
possibly try to exist only to satisfy
his own hunger, to eat, drink, and be
merry but such style of living and
existence will ultimately lose its
meaning. It is only when man
recognizes the needs of others and
the call of God and responds to
these that his life becomes fully
meaningful.
