According to a 1794 map and survey of the Town of Chelmsford, there were several mills along local rivers and brooks within current city limits, including two sawmills and one corn mill on the Merrimack River, one sawmill and iron works on the Concord River, and one sawmill and grist mill along River Meadow Brook. Additional mills are noted along Stony Brook in North Chelmsford, Beaver Brook in the town center, and Great Brook.
