2. The Issue - Situation 1
▪ Situation:
▪ A typical building in Berlin with 15 privat flats and one commercial store
▪ It is 9:30am and all resident are out of work
▪ Suddently, a water pipe in the 3rd floor brake and a huge leakage appear
▪ Result:
▪ The first resident return at 6pm and found a almost flooded house
▪ The building is completely damaged and has to be repaired 6 month for 80 k €

3. The Issue - Situation 2
▪ Situation:
▪ A large commercial building in Frankfurt with offices for 20 companies
▪ In the cellar, a tiny leakage in a water pipe has occurred 6 month ago and since than
water Is diffusing into the walls 24/7
▪ Result:
▪ After a certain time, the walls and floor will be severely damaged which will cause a
significant amount of money to repair
▪ Loosing several liters every day will increase the water bill

4. The Issue
▪ Water leakage in Buildings can cause huge damages and costs
▪ The earlier a leakage can be detected the faster maintenance reaction can be triggered
▪ Today, all solutions need local connected solutions, either wired or with range limited
wireless technology, which has to be added to cloud solutions via local gateways
▪ Local gateways increase product costs, maintenance risks, etc.
4
5. The solution
▪ With NB-IoT, sensors can be directly connected to the cloud even in cellars and will last
for years on battery based on better coverage
▪ Compare sensor values between sensors at the cloud platform can indicate an alarm if
values are differing more than a defined threshold.
5
6. How it Works
6
Within water circulation systems, at certain steps
flow sensors are installed which measure the flow
volume.
The flow sensor values will be send to
the cloud backend by using NB-IoT
modules.
Difference between the two flow sensors
indicates to a leakage and an alarm will be
triggered.
7. Conclusio
▪ Using NB-IoT to connect water flow sensors directly to the cloud will spare you cost
because of
▪ No need for local gateways
▪ Coverage even in cellars
▪ Low maintenance costs because of long battery lifetime
▪ Ability to do predictive maintenance, metering, monitoring, alarming and flow
optimization based on sensor information of a complete water cycle system in a
building
