Abstract
The following essay will discuss two pieces of art from the Renaissance period. The first is Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa which is the most well known painting of all times. The other piece of art that will be discussed was also created by the Renaissance by the great Michelangelo. Both of the pieces of art provide an important record of art during this time period.
Renaissance Art
The Renaissance was the rebirth of society after the Middle Ages. Believed to have begun in 14th Century Italy, the Renaissance was a revival of classical learning and the arts. New techniques in art and science began a new cultural movement focused on gaining and spreading knowledge. Art and science was intertwined during this era with great artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci who applied polymath to his drawings, resulting in some of the most visually spectacular art created in human history. Two of the greatest artist during the Italian Renaissance was Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Da Vinci greatest masterpiece was the Mona Lisa while Michelangelo’s greatest works are the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel especially the Last Judgment.
Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa was created by one of the greatest artist in the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci painted the very famous Mona Lisa between the dates of 1503-1506 in Florence, Italy and currently hangs in the Louvre. The Mona Lisa is painted in oil on poplar wood and is two dimensional. This painting is owned by the French government and is the most well known painting in the world. It is believed the portrait is of the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant who commissioned da Vinci to create the portrait but for some reason the merchant never received the portrait so it was carried to France when da Vinci went to work for King Francis I.
The fascination with the painting is in part due to the mysterious smile of the Mona Lisa. Many have speculated what she was smiling about with some believing the smile is for her husband’s while others believed the smile was for da Vinci. The painting was created in the realist school applying perception as taught by Master painter, Verocchio. The Mona Lisa is painted in this style. The Mona Lisa is painted from the frontal view point displaying three fourths of her body. The painting is created applying the scientific study of light and shadow and the chiaroscuro technique. This technique involves creating a more three dimensional figure by applying shadows and light to the painting.
The painting is painted in oil using darker colors to shadow and lighter colors to highlight distinct features of the painting. Leonardo uses his characteristic sfumato which is the use of a smoky haziness, to soften outlines and create an atmospheric effect around the figure (Lichfield, 2006). JUNIUS BASSUS SARCOPHAGUS Another pagan convert to Christianity was the city prefect of Rome, Junius Bassus, who, according to the inscription on his sarcophagus (FIG. 8-7), was baptized just before he died in 359. The sarcophagus is of eclectic format—decorated only on three sides in the western Roman manner (see Chapter 7), but divided into two registers of five compartments, each framed by columns in the tradition of Asiatic sarcophagi (FIG. 7-61). In contrast to the Santa Maria Antiqua sarcophagus (FIG. 8-6), the deceased does not appear on the body of the coffin. Instead, stories from the Old and New Testaments fill the niches. Christ has pride of place and appears in the central compartment of each register: as a teacher enthroned between his chief apostles, Saints Peter and Paul (above), and triumphantly entering Jerusalem on a donkey (below). Appropriately, the sculptor placed the scene of Christ’s heavenly triumph above that of his earthly triumph. Both compositions owe a great deal to official Roman art. In the center of the upper zone, Christ, like an enthroned Roman emperor, sits above a personification of the sky god holding a billowing mantle over his head, indicating that Christ is ruler of the universe. The scene below derives from portrayals of Roman emperors entering cities on horseback, but Christ’s steed and the absence of imperial attributes contrast sharply with the imperial models the sculptor used as compositional sources. All of the Old Testament scenes on the Junius Bassus sarcophagus are precursors of New Testament events (see “Jewish Subjects in Christian Art,” page 213). Adam and Eve, for example, are in the second niche from the left on the lower level. Their Original Sin of eating the apple in the Garden of Eden ultimately necessitated Christ’s sacrifice for the salvation of humankind. To the right of the entry into Jerusalem is Daniel, unscathed by flanking lions, saved by his faith. At the upper left, Abraham is about to sacrifice Isaac. Abstract
The following essay will discuss two pieces of art from the Renaissance period. The first is Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa which is the most well known painting of all times. The other piece of art that will be discussed was also created by the Renaissance by the great Michelangelo. Both of the pieces of art provide an important record of art during this time period.
Renaissance Art
The Renaissance was the rebirth of society after the Middle Ages. Believed to have begun in 14th Century Italy, the Renaissance was a revival of classical learning and the arts. New techniques in art and science began a new cultural movement focused on gaining and spreading knowledge. Art and science was intertwined during this era with great artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci who applied polymath to his drawings, resulting in some of the most visually spectacular art created in human history. Two of the greatest artist during the Italian Renaissance was Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Da Vinci greatest masterpiece was the Mona Lisa while Michelangelo’s greatest works are the paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel especially the Last Judgment.
Mona Lisa
The Mona Lisa was created by one of the greatest artist in the Italian Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci painted the very famous Mona Lisa between the dates of 1503-1506 in Florence, Italy and currently hangs in the Louvre. The Mona Lisa is painted in oil on poplar wood and is two dimensional. This painting is owned by the French government and is the most well known painting in the world. It is believed the portrait is of the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant who commissioned da Vinci to create the portrait but for some reason the merchant never received the portrait so it was carried to France when da Vinci went to work for King Francis I.
The fascination with the painting is in part due to the mysterious smile of the Mona Lisa. Many have speculated what she was smiling about with some believing the smile is for her husband’s while others believed the smile was for da Vinci. The painting was created in the realist school applying perception as taught by Master painter, Verocchio. The Mona Lisa is painted in this style. The Mona Lisa is painted from the frontal view point displaying three fourths of her body. The painting is created applying the scientific study of light and shadow and the chiaroscuro technique. This technique involves creating a more three dimensional figure by applying shadows and light to the painting.
The painting is painted in oil using darker colors to shadow and lighter colors to highlight distinct features of the painting. Leonardo uses his characteristic sfumato which is the use of a smoky haziness, to soften outlines and create an atmospheric effect around the figure (Lichfield, 2006). Michelangelo Buonarroti was one of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance, known for his sculptures of David and frescoes in the Sistine Chapel ceiling. JUNIUS BASSUS SARCOPHAGUS Another pagan convert to Christianity was the city prefect of Rome, Junius Bassus, who, according to the inscription on his sarcophagus (FIG. 8-7), was baptized just before he died in 359. The sarcophagus is of eclectic format—decorated only on three sides in the western Roman manner (see Chapter 7), but divided into two registers of five compartments, each framed by columns in the tradition of Asiatic sarcophagi (FIG. 7-61). In contrast to the Santa Maria Antiqua sarcophagus (FIG. 8-6), the deceased does not appear on the body of the coffin. Instead, stories from the Old and New Testaments fill the niches. Christ has pride of place and appears in the central compartment of each register: as a teacher enthroned between his chief apostles, Saints Peter and Paul (above), and triumphantly entering Jerusalem on a donkey (below). Appropriately, the sculptor placed the scene of Christ’s heavenly triumph above that of his earthly triumph. Both compositions owe a great deal to official Roman art. In the center of the upper zone, Christ, like an enthroned Roman emperor, sits above a personification of the sky god holding a billowing mantle over his head, indicating that Christ is ruler of the universe. The scene below derives from portrayals of Roman emperors entering cities on horseback, but Christ’s steed and the absence of imperial attributes contrast sharply with the imperial models the sculptor used as compositional sources. All of the Old Testament scenes on the Junius Bassus sarcophagus are precursors of New Testament events (see “Jewish Subjects in Christian Art,” page 213). Adam and Eve, for example, are in the second niche from the left on the lower level. Their Original Sin of eating the apple in the Garden of Eden ultimately necessitated Christ’s sacrifice for the salvation of humankind. To the right of the entry into Jerusalem is Daniel, unscathed by flanking lions, saved by his faith. At the upper left, Abraham is about to sacrifice Isaac. Christians believe this Old Testament story was a prefiguration of God’s sacrifice of his own son, Jesus. The Crucifixion itself, however, does not appear on the Junius Bassus sarcophagus. - 1. 16th century sculpture. Name: Moses. Creator: Michelangelo Year: 1513-1515 Materials: Marble Dimensions: 235cm (92.5in) Location: San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome Audience: Religious, pope Description: The marble sculpture. Depicts Moses with horns (tongs of fire according to the bible) on his head. Extra Information: The sculpture was commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb. This famous work of art depicts the Biblical figure Moses with horns on his head, symbolic of wisdom and enlightenment. Moses by Michalgelo: Moses was originally meant for the upper part of a much larger monument where it would have been seen from below. This explains the figure's unusually long torso and overly dramatic expression. Notice the swollen veins in his left arm and his massive shoulders, which seem too large in proportion to the neck. Moses is clearly related to Michelangelo's mighty seated figures of prophets and sibyls on the Sistine ceiling. The horns upon the head of the figure are a curiosity of the Italian Renaissance. One of the biblical translations of "rays of light" became "horns" in Italian, and this mistranslation led to Moses being commonly portrayed with horns.
- 2. In what is probably one of the most magnificent beards in the history of art, the locks fairly pour from Moses' broad angular face and are swept across the bulk of his chest by powerful hands. Notice how the face of Moses clearly recalls images of God on the Sistine ceiling, particularly the head of the Lord in Creation of Adam and Creation of Sun, Moon, and Plants. The knowledge Michelangelo gained from laboring over the frescoes is indeed reflected in his sculptural work of this period, especially in the freedom and magnificence, not seen in his earlier gigantic sculptures, with which he imbued the figure of Moses.
