New Delhi: The family
of the 17-year-old acid
attack survivor on
Thursday said that the
girl’s eyesight has not
been affected and her
facial burn injuries, as
per doctors, will also
heal over time.
She is still in the ICU
of Safdarjung Hospital,
said the victim’s uncle.
“Doctors at the hospi-
tal said the facial burns
will heal, but it will take
time,” he told PTI. The
girl had also suffered
injuries to her eyes in
the attack. “Her vision
has not been affected.
She is able to see and is
talking,” the uncle said,
adding that it was
“shocking” for them to
learn about a neigh-

New Delhi: A jawbone
recovered by the police
from the Mehrauli jun-
gle while probing the
murder of Shraddha
Walkar has been con-
firmed to be hers,
sources in Delhi Police
said on Thursday. DNA
from some of the 13
bones retrieved from
the jungle — including
the pelvis — and from
blood samples found in
Aaftab’s flat in Mehrau-
li have matched with
samples of Shraddha’s
father, the sources said.
The Central Forensic
Science Laboratory
(CFSL) and the Foren-
sic Science Laboratory
(FSL), Rohini, have sub-
mitted two reports —
DNA and Aftaab’s poly-
graph — to the Delhi
Police’s investigating
team. “The two reports
corroborate the police’s
investigation and Aaft-
ab’s statements,” the
source said.
Delhi Special Com-
missioner of Police, Sa-
gar Preet Hooda, told
the media on Thursday
that the CFSL and FSL
Rohini reports had been
helpful to the investiga-
tion. The police still
await Aaftab’s narco-
analysis report from
FSL Rohini. Once that
is in, all three reports
will be sent to court, on
the basis of which the
police will apply for fur-
ther custody
.
According to police
sources, the DNA evi-
dence will prove to be a
critical evidence in the
case. “The DNA reports
confirm that it was in-
deed Shraddha Walkar
who was killed. We col-
lected samples from her
father and brother after
the incident came to
light,” a source said.
Meanwhile, Lt Gover-
nor V K Saxena ap-
proved a proposal of
Delhi Police to appoint
two special public pros-
ecutors — Madhukar
Pandey and Amit Pras-
ad — in the case.
Special public prose-
cutors are usually ap-
pointed to ensure fo-
cused attention on the
prosecution of accused
and expeditious trial.
They are appointed ei-
ther by the state or by
judicial orders, as hap-
pened in the 2G and the
coal scam cases.

CONGRESS SEEKS WHITE PAPER ON CHINA
New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday demanded a white paper on China, including the
recent transgressions, and taunted the Central government by saying “why it was not show-
ing ‘laal ankh’ (angry eyes) to the neighbouring country”. Leader of the Congress party in the
Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury raised the matter during Zero Hour. Trinamool Congress
leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay also sought a discussion on the China issue. Chowdhury was
alluding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2014 remark, when he had talked about showing
“laal ankh” to the Chinese over repeated transgressions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC)
and had also spoken about the might of a “56-inch chest”.

day sought strict action against those responsible for
sale of illicit liquor in the state, while blaming the state
government for deaths of more than 20 persons.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, BJP

that fake liquor is being distributed in Bihar through the
local administration, which has led to deaths. P5
RS was adjourned twice for 15 minutes on Thursday
following an uproar by the opposition members after
being denied notices. Seven Opposition members had
given notices to the chairman on various issues, but
were not allowed. In reaction, the opposition members
indulged in sloganeering and the House was adjourned

drink spurious liquor,
they may well die, as the

his government came
under attack from vari-

PRESIDENT’S RULE SHOULD BE IMPOSED IN
BIHAR, SAYS BJP MP SUSHIL KUMAR SINGH
BJP MP Sushil Kumar Singh said that there is anarchy in
Bihar. “Liquor and sand mafia are dominant and there is
nothing left in the name of law and order, so the government
of the Grand Alliance should be dismissed and President’s
rule should be imposed in Bihar,” Singh said.
States ruled by the
saffron party had
the worst track
records in terms of spurious
liquor deaths. Madhya
Pradesh and Karnataka
stood at the top in terms of
the number of hooch deaths
while even Gujarat, a dry
state, fared much worse
than Bihar which is under

Delhi now even more unsafe for women
First India Bureau
New Delhi: Ten years
ago, on this day
, an inci-
dent in Delhi shocked
the entire world. A
23-year-old woman
named Jyoti Singh
(known as Nirbhaya)
was gang-raped on a
moving bus on the night
of December 16, 2012.
The young woman
fought back but suffered
internal injuries and
was thrown out naked
from the bus. She died
within two weeks.
The incident forced
everyone to consider –
how much violence
would women continue
to suffer in India?
The massive protests
over the Nirbhaya case
did bring about a cer-
tain amount of change
– laws were amended to
recognise wider and
more nuanced defini-
tionsof violenceagainst
women, set penalties for
inefficient police action,
and create stricter pun-
ishments for perpetra-
tors – including, signifi-
cantly
, the death penalty
.
A decade later, dan-
gers for women in Delhi
continue to grow in var-
ious ways. The crime
rate against women has
increased by more than
50% in the past decade.

outrage a woman’s modesty.
z Mumbai and Bengaluru followed Delhi in
crimes against women in 2021.
OTHER PROMINENT CASES
More than 3,00,000 rape cases were reported
in India in the years 2011-2020, some of them
catching public attention due to the bestiality
and case atrocity involved.
n The incident
forced everyone

much violence
would women
suffer in India?

Issued by Directorate of Education
New Delhi (PTI): The Central Board of Second-
ary Education Thursday warned students and par-
ents against a fake website of the board and asked
them not to make any payments on the portal for
downloading admit cards for class 10 and 12 exams.
“It has come to the notice of the board that cer-
tain unscrupulous elements have created a website
resembling the official CBSE website www.cbse.
gov.in.
“This fake website has been created with the
address https://cbsegovt.com/ and is blatantly
duping unsuspecting students, schools and par-
ents by sending messages to deposit money for
creating and downloading the admit card for CBSE
class 10 and 12, 2023 examinations,” the board said
in an advisory
.
It asked the public and stakeholders to be “ex-
tremely careful and not respond to any such fake
messages and websites”.

Flipkart after it found that the acid was procured
from Flipkart. Flipkart said in a statement, “We

AIRPORT INFRA
TO END WOES OF
PASSENGERS
he frustration of be-
ing confined to their
homes because of
the travel restric-
tions due to the pan-
demic is being let out now with
people rushing to catch the first
flight to execute their travel
plans. Lack of infrastructure is
another reason for the over-
crowding. So heavy is the foot-
fall that Delhi international air-
port’s Terminal 3 has been wit-
nessing chaotic scenes for the
last few day. The seemingly un-
ending breakdown of arrange-
ments at the airport forced the
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotira-
ditya Scindia to personally visit
the airport to find out what the
bottlenecks were. Other major
airports also are witnessing
scenes which some flyers com-
pared with a ‘fish market’.
After the minister’s visit a
slew of measures were an-
nounced. It was found that more
counters of different airlines
were needed and the process of
security check at the entry point
and baggage clearance needed
to be expedited in view of long
queues of travellers. The plans
have not worked so far.
T
ow quickly eco-
nomic interests
take over national
sentiments is best
illustrated by In-
dia’s relations with China. In
a burst of justifiable anger
after the violent clashes in
Galwan in 2020, there were
callstoboycottChinesegoods.
The boycott call, strongly
backed by the Confederation
of All-India Traders (CAIT),
especially targeted decorative
lights, idols of Lord Ganesh
and goddess Lakshmi and
firecrackers which register
brisk sale during Diwali. The
CAIT expected a business loss
of about 75, 000 crore to Chi-
na. The response was signifi-
cant as Chinese goods disap-
peared during that year’s fes-
tive season.
The patriotic fervour of
2020 didn’t last long. Chinese
fancy lights were back to
swarm Indian markets. De-
spite the after-effects of pan-
demic and inflation, demand
was at its peak. China is un-
derstood to have exported
$710 million worth of LED
light related products, about
135% more than the corre-
sponding period in 2020.
Stronger national sentiments
are needed for decoupling
with China by replacing Chi-
nese products with those
made in India. Cost is one
factor which makes Indian
products uncompetitive in
comparison to those from
China. Besides import of
fancy lights, China remains
India’s 2nd biggest trading
partner after US. While India
exported $21.25 billion worth
of goods to China in 2021-22,
imports stood at $94.57 bil-
lion. These figures may wrongly
be interpreted to suggest that
China’sdesignsonIndia’sterrito-
rial integrity are being ignored.
With Indian economy now on a
brisk march, it will take some
time to reduce the country’s de-
pendence on Chinese products.

H
MISSION POK
(Bangladesh Victory Season 2.0)
ndia celebrates VIJAY DI-
WAS on 16 Dec to commemo-
rate 51 years of Victory in
Bangladesh. Last month,
Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Ra-
jnath Singh was on a day’s
visit to the India-China bor-
der in Eastern Ladakh. This
was his second visit during a
span of a few weeks. He made
a specific mention of the part
of the State of Jammu and
Kashmir under Pakistan’s il-
legal occupation and said
that India will take back POK
in accordance with a resolu-
tion passed unanimously in
Parliament in 1994. Is India
preparing for Bangladesh
War Season 2? Let’s have a
reality check.
POLITICAL WILL
India had gone to UN in 1948
with the Kashmir issue and
thereafter in various forums,
India has always reiterated
that sanctity of ‘Line of Con-
trol (LC)’ should be main-
tained. Pakistan leaves no
opportunity to keep the
Kashmir issue alive in inter-
national forum. LC is now
accepted as ipso facto border
between India and Pakistan.
Even during Kargil war the
sanctity of LC was honoured
by India. India had 4 golden
chances that Pakistan pre-
sented in the form of four
wars they lost, but we didn’t
do it that time. However, the
Hon’ble Raksha Mantri’s
statement on POK manifests
the changed political will of
New Bharat.
India is progressing well
as the fastest growing econo-
my in the world and today we
are a power to reckon. Any
misadventure will derail the
economic progress and take
the country back by more
than a decade or so. War is a
costly hobby and the price of
war in terms of economy and
human lives will have to be
clearly weighed by the deci-
sion makers, before we un-
dertake such bold action.
MILITARY CAPABILITY
India Armed Forces are
among the world’s largest de-
fence forces with experience
of four wars. However, to un-
dertake an offensive of the
magnitude of taking POK
back will need a detailed
thought. The following as-
pects merit consideration-
l India and Pakistan have
formidable defence system
along the ‘Line of Control
(LC)’ in JK. The pace of
operations will therefore
be slow in such obstacle
ridden rugged terrain.
l Any initiative of India in
the context could result in
a two front war with Chi-
na and Pakistan.
l China has heavily invested
in POK and won’t let it slip
out. It will provide all
help to Pakistan thereby
keeping India embroiled
in the conflict without any
tangible gains.
l Even if China doesn’t open
up the Eastern Borders of
India actively take part
with Pakistan, China will
certainly deploy it’s forces
on LAC with India and tie
down a large amount of
Indian forces, in the East-
ern theatre of war.
l India has three strike
corps, as offensive forces.
One is poised for China
Sector, the second for de-
serts of Western Sector
and only one strike corps
is left for offensive in Jk.
Therefore, taking entire
POK with one strike corps
may not be feasible and
committing more troops
in POK will unbalance the
entire western front.
l Support of local popula-
tion is essential for such
operations but it’s not
likely in the case in POK.
INTERNATIONAL
OPINION
India’s stand of principled
neutrality during Russia’s
aggression in Ukraine has
also not been taken kindly by
the west and the USA. The so-
called free world has framed
a negative impression of In-
dia. India has also made it
clear in the Ukraine conflict
that it does not favour war as
a means to resolve interna-
tional disputes. PM Modi is
on record to say-“This is not
an Era of war.”
China being member of
UNSC will take the lead to
declare India as an aggressor.
Large no of economic and
diplomatic sanctions will be
slapped on India. Presently,
India is a fragile economy
with large portion of war
equipment and oil being ex-
ported. After Ukraine war
and prolonged sanctions,
Russia will be too weak to
support India and veto such
resolutions, against the wish-
es of China. Therefore, India
will be throttled to stop war,
by the West and China.
CHAOS IN PAKISTAN
Pakistan is in utter chaos to-
day due to economic crisis
and political turmoil. Nature
has also not been kind and
ravaging floods have also add-
ed to its woos. Hardliners and
extremist organizations are
calling the shots over weak-
ened Govt and non assertive
Pak Army
. Pakistan society
today is almost on the brink
of a civil war. Further rise in
tempers will lead to more
violence and civil unrest.
The POK region has also
been linguistically and cul-
turally marginalized by Paki-
stan rulers, for nearly 75
years. People of POK are be-
ing deprived of all basic
rights by Pakistan and it
remains an underdeveloped
territory. China is making
inroads into this territory to
fulfill its ambitions. POK is
presently at the crossroads
of Conflicting Interests of
India, China and Pakistan.
CONCLUSION
Crystal gazing into future in-
dicates that there is consider-
able anti-China feeling
spreading in Pakistan. USA
is already alienated with
Pak. India is making new
friends in the Arab world and
Pakistan has been snubbed
many a times. It is possible
that Pakistan may be isolated
from its closest allies - USA,
China and the Arab world. In
the time-frame that this
change comes about, India
would be militarily powerful
to take back POK by force,
economically strong to with-
stand sanctions that will ac-
crue and politically strong to
justify the actions in the in-
ternational forum. Once that
is done, taking POK will be
a cakewalk. It’s a ‘feel good’
factor whose time has not yet
come but we can keep the pot
boiling.

Will Rahul Gandhi take command
in South and Priyanka in North?
Shamsher Singh
New Delhi: Rahul Gan-
dhi started his Bharat
Jodo Yatra from South
India. It was not a spon-
taneous decision, but it
was done after a lot of
thought. Priyanka Gan-
dhi Vadra also did not
participate in the yatra
anywhere in South In-
dia, but as soon as the
yatra left the south, she
joined the yatra in Mad-
hya Pradesh with her
husband and son, and
traveled with her hus-
band and daughter in
Rajasthan. In future
too, the states where
Congress will go on
Bharat Jodo Yatra, she
can join there. She cam-
paigned fiercely in the
hill state of Himachal
Pradesh and Uttar
Pradesh and also got
the party to victory in
the Himachal elections.
So, it looks like the Con-
gress is going to divide
the responsibility be-
tween Rahul Gandhi
and Priyanka Gandhi
Vadra in the next Lok
Sabha elections.
Rahul Gandhi will
contest the Lok Sabha
elections from the Way-
anad seat in Kerala and
will lead the party in
South India, while Pri-
yanka Gandhi Vadra
will contest from the
Rae Bareli seat and will
lead the party in North
India. However, this
does not mean that Ra-
hul will not campaign
in the states of North
India. He has emerged
as the supreme leader
of the party from the
Bharat Jodo Yatra and
the party will make full
use of his new image in
the campaign.

Jaipur (PTI): As the
‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ en-

,
Congress watchers feel
it has found some an-
swers the party had
been looking for on the
road to 2024 but ques-
tions remain whether it
will yield electoral divi-
dends going forward.
The Kanyakumari to
Kashmir foot march
has also courted many
controversies in the last
three months and led to
several fiery exchanges
between the Congress
and the BJP including
on Rahul Gandhi’s ever-
growing grey beard and
his Burberry T-shirt.
With over 2,800 km
under his belt, Gandhi
has managed to catch
the attention of his sup-
porters as well as de-
tractors and seen quite
a few celebrities includ-
ing from the tinsel town
and academia walking
alongside him from
time to time.However,
some political pundits
feel the party should
have had more tangible
political objectives for
the yatra and ques-
tioned the party for
skipping poll-bound
states of Gujarat and
Himachal Pradesh.
Amid questions over
the yatra translating
into any electoral divi-
dend, two recently- con-
cluded assembly elec-
tions turned out to be a
mixed bag for the Con-
gress as it was drubbed
in Gujarat to its lowest-
ever tally while won in
Himachal.
A clearer picture of
the impact on the par-
ty’s electoral fortunes
would emerge in the as-
sembly polls next year,
including in Karnata-
ka, Madhya Pradesh
and Rajasthan, which
were covered well by
the Yatra.

Patna: After Bihar’s hooch toll climbed, Chief Minister
Nitish Kumar on Thursday warned that if people drink
spurious liquor, they may well die, as the prohibition
policy of his government
came under attack from
various quarters. Political
strategist turned activist
Prashant Kishor described
the state's prohibition law
as a farce and demanded
scrapping of the prohibi-

spurious alcohol will die), thundered Bihar Chief

MPs led by Paras will meet Bi-

in the state due to consumption of spurious liquor and also
the “deteriorating” law-and-order situation. Rashtriya Lok
Janshakti Party spokesperson Shravan Kumar Agrawal
said party members, including its four MPs from the state,
will organise a protest in Patna on December 17 over the

cording to a filing posted
Wednesday night by the US
Securities and Exchange
Commission.
Musk has sold nearly $23
billion worth of Tesla stock
since April, with much of
the money likely going to
help fund his $44 billion ac-
quisition of Twitter.
The sale comes as shares
of the electric vehicle and
solar panel maker have col-
lapsed, losing over half
their value since Musk
first disclosed in April that
he was buying up Twitter
stock. The falling shares
have bumped Musk from
his status as the world’s
wealthiest person, with his
net worth falling to $174 bil-
lion, according to Forbes.
He was passed last week
by Bernard Arnault.
The takeover of Twitter
has not been smooth, and
some big companies have
halted advertising on the
social media platform.
Musk has said that Twit-
ter had “a massive drop in
revenue” due to the adver-
tiser losses.

Union home secy reviews crowding at airports
New Delhi (PTI): An
additional 1,400 CISF
personnel has been
sanctioned to secure the
expanding terminal ar-
eas of the Delhi Airport
and also to meet the
challenge of its growing
passenger traffic, offi-
cials said on Thursday
.
This was conveyed at
a high-level meeting
chaired by Union Home
Secretary Ajay Bhalla
along with the repre-
sentatives of the Civil
Aviation Ministry, the
Bureau of Civil Avia-
tion Security (BCAS),
Bureau of Immigration
among others.
The meeting was
called to review meas-
ures taken to ease the
recent congestion re-
ported at large airports,
particularly in Delhi,
Mumbai, and Bengalu-
ru. It was informed dur-
ing the meeting that an
additional force of 1,400
Central Industrial Secu-
rity Force personnel
would soon be deployed
at the Indira Gandhi In-
ternational Airport
where expansion is go-
ing on at three termi-
nals—1,2,and3—apart
from its cargo hold area.
The terminal 1 reno-
vation and expansion
was scheduled to be
completed by December
next year or January
2024butthegovernment
wants it to be expedited
and finished by Novem-
ber 2023, the start of the
holiday season.
More CISF personnel
will be required to se-
cure the expanding ar-
eas of the IGI and hence
the new manpower
sanction, they said.
The enhanced man-
power, over and above
the existing strength of
about 5,000 personnel,
has been recently ap-
proved after a four-
month-long joint sur-
vey undertaken by se-
curity agencies. The
proposal was finally
moved by the BCAS and
approved by the Civil
Aviation ministry
.
The joint review had
estimated the creation
of about 2,400 posts for
the CISF to meet the
upcoming needs at the
IGI but the manpower
was finally rational-
ised at 1,400 personnel
apart from filling up
the existing vacancies
in the sanctioned 5,000
personnel strength,
sources said.
The IGI will have a
total strength of about
6,500 men and women
personnel after the in-
duction of the fresh
manpower, they said.
The new CISF
strength will not only
be used to render the
core duty of the force
—of providing an anti-
terrorist and anti-hi-
jack cover at the hyper-
sensitive facility -- but
also to meet the chal-
lenge of the ever-grow-
ing passenger footfall,
both for domestic and
international travel,
sources said.

Don’t keep talking of what Indira,
Rajiv did: Rahul to Congress
First India Bureau
New Delhi: Congress
leader Rahul Gandhi,
whose Bharat Jodo
Yatra passed through
Rajasthan’s Dausa dis-
trict on Thursday, took
exception to a leader
comparing him to Ma-
hatma Gandhi.
“This is totally
wrong. We are not in
the same league and
there should be no com-
parison. He was a great
man. He devoted his life
to fighting for the coun-
try’s freedom, stayed in
jail for 10-12 years. No-
body can fill his shoes
and my name should
not be taken along with
his,” Rahul said.
“What Rajiv Gandhi
and Indira Gandhi did,
they became martyrs,
they did well. But the
Congress should not
dwell on it at every
meeting. Indira Gandhi,
Rajiv Gandhi, Sardar
Vallabh Bhai Patel,
Jawaharlal Nehru, Ma-
hatma Gandhi, they did
all they could. They
have done their share.
We should focus on
what we are going to do.
It is better to think
about what we are doing
for the people,” he told
party workers.
“For one, it has re-
vived the political brand
of Rahul Gandhi. The
BJPcannotridiculehim
anymore using their
‘fake news malicious
campaign’. Secondly,
the Congress has at last
connected directly with
the people through this
mass movement,” for-
mer party leader Sanjay
Jha said.

NEW DELHI, FRIDAY,
DECEMBER 16, 2022
ou might not be an
Ivy Leaguer, but
because we’re all
now enrolled at
Harvard and the
year is 1865, you
best have your
horse and carriage ready.
Even though it had a quite
different appearance at the
time, the varsity jacket was
initially created on the Har-
vard campus in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. The origi-
nal varsity was a thick knit
sweater that athletes wore
as a uniform rather than a
jacket. The “letterman jack-
et” was first made when the
Harvard Baseball team
made the decision to sew
enormous “H”s into the
middle of their jerseys.
The letter came with
some restrictions, too. If
you were a good enough
player, you could retain
your jersey and the letter,
but if you sat on the bench
the entire season and
didn’t play, you had to give
your jersey back at the end
of the year, which added to
the letters’ competitive ap-
peal. After a decade, Har-
vard’s football team start-
ed wearing lettered jer-
seys, and gradually but
surely, other colleges and
teams all around the coun-
try began donning their
own variations of the var-
sity sweater.
Of course, each team
handled things somewhat
differently, altering the let-
ter’s size or type, moving it
around, and eventually
gradually modifying the
style until, by the early
20th century, the letter had
found its final location on
the side of the sweater.
Athletes started looking
for something a little more
substantial as the fashion
gained popularity, and in
the 1930s the varsity jacket
was produced. The varsity
jacket, which had a wool
body and contrasting
leather sleeves as well as,
of course, a large and
proud letter on the side,
came to represent author-
ity at one’s particular in-
stitution. According to the
custom, a player would
need to first demonstrate
his skill on the field before
being granted a letter. The
athlete would then pur-
chase a varsity
jacket to attach on
so that everyone
could see how tal-
ented he was. The
fact that designers
may tinker with
fabrics and col-
ours to make a jacket for
just about everyone shows
that the varsity has always
offered a lot of customis-
ing options. The varsity is
gradually evolving into the
typical man’s autumn
wardrobe staple, from
Gant Rugger’s neo-classic,
vivid red Homerun Jacket
to Comme Des Garcons’
darker version for the
more avant-garde set.

  • 1. Acid attack: Victim is able to see, says family New Delhi: The family of the 17-year-old acid attack survivor on Thursday said that the girl’s eyesight has not been affected and her facial burn injuries, as per doctors, will also heal over time. She is still in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital, said the victim’s uncle. “Doctors at the hospi- tal said the facial burns will heal, but it will take time,” he told PTI. The girl had also suffered injuries to her eyes in the attack. “Her vision has not been affected. She is able to see and is talking,” the uncle said, adding that it was “shocking” for them to learn about a neigh- bour’s involvement . Prime accused Sachin Arora, 20, and his two friends have been arrested. Bones recovered from forest confirmed to be Shraddha’s: Police First India Bureau New Delhi: A jawbone recovered by the police from the Mehrauli jun- gle while probing the murder of Shraddha Walkar has been con- firmed to be hers, sources in Delhi Police said on Thursday. DNA from some of the 13 bones retrieved from the jungle — including the pelvis — and from blood samples found in Aaftab’s flat in Mehrau- li have matched with samples of Shraddha’s father, the sources said. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) and the Foren- sic Science Laboratory (FSL), Rohini, have sub- mitted two reports — DNA and Aftaab’s poly- graph — to the Delhi Police’s investigating team. “The two reports corroborate the police’s investigation and Aaft- ab’s statements,” the source said. Delhi Special Com- missioner of Police, Sa- gar Preet Hooda, told the media on Thursday that the CFSL and FSL Rohini reports had been helpful to the investiga- tion. The police still await Aaftab’s narco- analysis report from FSL Rohini. Once that is in, all three reports will be sent to court, on the basis of which the police will apply for fur- ther custody . According to police sources, the DNA evi- dence will prove to be a critical evidence in the case. “The DNA reports confirm that it was in- deed Shraddha Walkar who was killed. We col- lected samples from her father and brother after the incident came to light,” a source said. Meanwhile, Lt Gover- nor V K Saxena ap- proved a proposal of Delhi Police to appoint two special public pros- ecutors — Madhukar Pandey and Amit Pras- ad — in the case. Special public prose- cutors are usually ap- pointed to ensure fo- cused attention on the prosecution of accused and expeditious trial. They are appointed ei- ther by the state or by judicial orders, as hap- pened in the 2G and the coal scam cases. A 23-year-old woman named Jyoti Singh (known as Nirbhaya) was gang-raped on a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012. The young woman fought back but suffered internal injuries and was thrown out naked from the bus. She died within two weeks. The incident forced everyone to consider – how much violence would women continue to suffer in India? The massive protests over the Nirbhaya case did bring about a cer- tain amount of change – laws were amended to recognise wider and more nuanced defini- tionsof violenceagainst women, set penalties for inefficient police action, and create stricter pun- ishments for perpetra- tors – including, signifi- cantly , the death penalty . A decade later, dan- gers for women in Delhi continue to grow in var- ious ways. The crime rate against women has increased by more than 50% in the past decade. TOP TWEETS REVIEWING DELHI AIRPORT INFRA TO END WOES OF PASSENGERS he frustration of be- ing confined to their homes because of the travel restric- tions due to the pan- demic is being let out now with people rushing to catch the first flight to execute their travel plans. Lack of infrastructure is another reason for the over- crowding. So heavy is the foot- fall that Delhi international air- port’s Terminal 3 has been wit- nessing chaotic scenes for the last few day. The seemingly un- ending breakdown of arrange- ments at the airport forced the Civil Aviation Minister Jyotira- ditya Scindia to personally visit the airport to find out what the bottlenecks were. Other major airports also are witnessing scenes which some flyers com- pared with a ‘fish market’. After the minister’s visit a slew of measures were an- nounced. It was found that more counters of different airlines were needed and the process of security check at the entry point and baggage clearance needed to be expedited in view of long queues of travellers. The plans have not worked so far. T ow quickly eco- nomic interests take over national sentiments is best illustrated by In- dia’s relations with China. In a burst of justifiable anger after the violent clashes in Galwan in 2020, there were callstoboycottChinesegoods. The boycott call, strongly backed by the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT), especially targeted decorative lights, idols of Lord Ganesh and goddess Lakshmi and firecrackers which register brisk sale during Diwali. The CAIT expected a business loss of about 75, 000 crore to Chi- na. The response was signifi- cant as Chinese goods disap- peared during that year’s fes- tive season. The patriotic fervour of 2020 didn’t last long. Chinese fancy lights were back to swarm Indian markets. De- spite the after-effects of pan- demic and inflation, demand was at its peak. China is un- derstood to have exported $710 million worth of LED light related products, about 135% more than the corre- sponding period in 2020. Stronger national sentiments are needed for decoupling with China by replacing Chi- nese products with those made in India. Cost is one factor which makes Indian products uncompetitive in comparison to those from China. Besides import of fancy lights, China remains India’s 2nd biggest trading partner after US. While India exported $21.25 billion worth of goods to China in 2021-22, imports stood at $94.57 bil- lion. These figures may wrongly be interpreted to suggest that China’sdesignsonIndia’sterrito- rial integrity are being ignored. With Indian economy now on a brisk march, it will take some time to reduce the country’s de- pendence on Chinese products. THE DISSIPATION OF GALWAN ANGER Stronger national sentiments are needed for the decoupling with China by replacing Chinese products with those made in India. Cost is one factor which makes Indian products uncompetitive in comparison to those from China H MISSION POK (Bangladesh Victory Season 2.0) ndia celebrates VIJAY DI- WAS on 16 Dec to commemo- rate 51 years of Victory in Bangladesh. Last month, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Ra- jnath Singh was on a day’s visit to the India-China bor- der in Eastern Ladakh. This was his second visit during a span of a few weeks. He made a specific mention of the part of the State of Jammu and Kashmir under Pakistan’s il- legal occupation and said that India will take back POK in accordance with a resolu- tion passed unanimously in Parliament in 1994. Is India preparing for Bangladesh War Season 2? Let’s have a reality check. POLITICAL WILL India had gone to UN in 1948 with the Kashmir issue and thereafter in various forums, India has always reiterated that sanctity of ‘Line of Con- trol (LC)’ should be main- tained. Pakistan leaves no opportunity to keep the Kashmir issue alive in inter- national forum. LC is now accepted as ipso facto border between India and Pakistan. Even during Kargil war the sanctity of LC was honoured by India. India had 4 golden chances that Pakistan pre- sented in the form of four wars they lost, but we didn’t do it that time. However, the Hon’ble Raksha Mantri’s statement on POK manifests the changed political will of New Bharat. India is progressing well as the fastest growing econo- my in the world and today we are a power to reckon. Any misadventure will derail the economic progress and take the country back by more than a decade or so. War is a costly hobby and the price of war in terms of economy and human lives will have to be clearly weighed by the deci- sion makers, before we un- dertake such bold action. MILITARY CAPABILITY India Armed Forces are among the world’s largest de- fence forces with experience of four wars. However, to un- dertake an offensive of the magnitude of taking POK back will need a detailed thought. The following as- pects merit consideration- l India and Pakistan have formidable defence system along the ‘Line of Control (LC)’ in JK. The pace of operations will therefore be slow in such obstacle ridden rugged terrain. l Any initiative of India in the context could result in a two front war with Chi- na and Pakistan. l China has heavily invested in POK and won’t let it slip out. It will provide all help to Pakistan thereby keeping India embroiled in the conflict without any tangible gains. l Even if China doesn’t open up the Eastern Borders of India actively take part with Pakistan, China will certainly deploy it’s forces on LAC with India and tie down a large amount of Indian forces, in the East- ern theatre of war. l India has three strike corps, as offensive forces. One is poised for China Sector, the second for de- serts of Western Sector and only one strike corps is left for offensive in Jk. Therefore, taking entire POK with one strike corps may not be feasible and committing more troops in POK will unbalance the entire western front. l Support of local popula- tion is essential for such operations but it’s not likely in the case in POK. INTERNATIONAL OPINION India’s stand of principled neutrality during Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has also not been taken kindly by the west and the USA. The so- called free world has framed a negative impression of In- dia. India has also made it clear in the Ukraine conflict that it does not favour war as a means to resolve interna- tional disputes. PM Modi is on record to say-“This is not an Era of war.” China being member of UNSC will take the lead to declare India as an aggressor. Large no of economic and diplomatic sanctions will be slapped on India. Presently, India is a fragile economy with large portion of war equipment and oil being ex- ported. After Ukraine war and prolonged sanctions, Russia will be too weak to support India and veto such resolutions, against the wish- es of China. Therefore, India will be throttled to stop war, by the West and China. CHAOS IN PAKISTAN Pakistan is in utter chaos to- day due to economic crisis and political turmoil. Nature has also not been kind and ravaging floods have also add- ed to its woos. Hardliners and extremist organizations are calling the shots over weak- ened Govt and non assertive Pak Army . Pakistan society today is almost on the brink of a civil war. Further rise in tempers will lead to more violence and civil unrest. The POK region has also been linguistically and cul- turally marginalized by Paki- stan rulers, for nearly 75 years. People of POK are be- ing deprived of all basic rights by Pakistan and it remains an underdeveloped territory. China is making inroads into this territory to fulfill its ambitions. POK is presently at the crossroads of Conflicting Interests of India, China and Pakistan. CONCLUSION Crystal gazing into future in- dicates that there is consider- able anti-China feeling spreading in Pakistan. USA is already alienated with Pak. India is making new friends in the Arab world and Pakistan has been snubbed many a times. It is possible that Pakistan may be isolated from its closest allies - USA, China and the Arab world. In the time-frame that this change comes about, India would be militarily powerful to take back POK by force, economically strong to with- stand sanctions that will ac- crue and politically strong to justify the actions in the in- ternational forum. Once that is done, taking POK will be a cakewalk. It’s a ‘feel good’ factor whose time has not yet come but we can keep the pot boiling. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I India is progressing well as the fastest growing economy in the world and today we are a power to reckon. Any misadventure will derail the economic progress and take the country back by more than a decade or so. Shamsher Singh New Delhi: Rahul Gan- dhi started his Bharat Jodo Yatra from South India. It was not a spon- taneous decision, but it was done after a lot of thought. Priyanka Gan- dhi Vadra also did not participate in the yatra anywhere in South In- dia, but as soon as the yatra left the south, she joined the yatra in Mad- hya Pradesh with her husband and son, and traveled with her hus- band and daughter in Rajasthan. In future too, the states where Congress will go on Bharat Jodo Yatra, she can join there. She cam- paigned fiercely in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and also got the party to victory in the Himachal elections. So, it looks like the Con- gress is going to divide the responsibility be- tween Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the next Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Way- anad seat in Kerala and will lead the party in South India, while Pri- yanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from the Rae Bareli seat and will lead the party in North India. However, this does not mean that Ra- hul will not campaign in the states of North India. The Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march has also courted many controversies in the last three months and led to several fiery exchanges between the Congress and the BJP including on Rahul Gandhi’s ever- growing grey beard and his Burberry T-shirt. The falling shares have bumped Musk from his status as the world’s wealthiest person, with his net worth falling to $174 bil- lion, according to Forbes. He was passed last week by Bernard Arnault. The takeover of Twitter has not been smooth, and some big companies have halted advertising on the social media platform. Even though it had a quite different appearance at the time, the varsity jacket was initially created on the Har- vard campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The origi- nal varsity was a thick knit sweater that athletes wore as a uniform rather than a jacket. The “letterman jack- et” was first made when the Harvard Baseball team made the decision to sew enormous “H”s into the middle of their jerseys. The letter came with some restrictions, too. If you were a good enough player, you could retain your jersey and the letter, but if you sat on the bench the entire season and didn’t play, you had to give your jersey back at the end of the year, which added to the letters’ competitive ap- peal. After a decade, Har- vard’s football team start- ed wearing lettered jer- seys, and gradually but surely, other colleges and teams all around the coun- try began donning their own variations of the var- sity sweater. Of course, each team handled things somewhat differently, altering the let- ter’s size or type, moving it around, and eventually gradually modifying the style until, by the early 20th century, the letter had found its final location on the side of the sweater. Athletes started looking for something a little more substantial as the fashion gained popularity, and in the 1930s the varsity jacket was produced. The varsity jacket, which had a wool body and contrasting leather sleeves as well as, of course, a large and proud letter on the side, came to represent author- ity at one’s particular in- stitution. According to the custom, a player would need to first demonstrate his skill on the field before being granted a letter. The athlete would then pur- chase a varsity jacket to attach on so that everyone could see how tal- ented he was. The fact that designers may tinker with fabrics and col- ours to make a jacket for just about everyone shows that the varsity has always offered a lot of customis- ing options. The varsity is gradually evolving into the typical man’s autumn wardrobe staple, from Gant Rugger’s neo-classic, vivid red Homerun Jacket to Comme Des Garcons’ darker version for the more avant-garde set.
