‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’
UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 1
WHY PM MODI CHOSE TO WAIT IN THE
PARLIAMENT LOBBY FOR 20 MINUTES?
ere’s an account of the first
hand experiences of PM
Modi’s humility and commit-
ment towards parliamentary
procedures as narrated by
Cabinet Minister Arjun Ram
Meghwal. The Minister es-
corted PM Modi from Lok
Sabha to Rajya Sabha cham-
bers on the day of election of
Deputy Chairman of Rajya
Sabha. As part of Parliamen-
tary procedure, the PM was
not supposed to sit in Rajya
Sabha while the election pro-
ceedings were on. Yet being
the Prime Minister he could
have done that as an excep-
tion. But PM Modi still chose
to abide by the protocol and
preferred to wait in the lobby
for about half an hour.
There was a flurry of activ-
ity in the Parliament on the
day as the election for Deputy
Chairman was being held in
Rajya Sabha. Harivanshji had
been nominated by Janata Dal
(United) for the post although
he had been member of Rajya
Sabha for only a short time.
Now, according to Parlia-
mentary procedures, if the
Prime Minister is a member
of Rajya Sabha, he/she sits in
the House from the very be-
ginning of the proceedings,
and if the PM is member of
Lok Sabha instead, then he or
she joins the House after the
election proceedings are over
and is the first to speak a few
words about the newly elect-
ed Deputy Chairman.
It was around 3 pm on 9 Au-
gust, 2018 and I was fortunate
to have been given the duty of
escorting the PM from Lok
Sabha to the Upper House. As
I reached, PM Modi asked me
if the election proceedings
were over. I replied, “Sir, it will
take 5-10 minutes more”. The
PM then asked me to keep
trackof theproceedingsonTV
and to inform him as soon as
they were over. I entered the
PM’s chamber after a few min-
utesandinformedhimthatthe
proceedings would be over by
thetimewereachRajyaSabha.
My walk down to the Upper
House accompanying the PM
began and just as we were
about to cross the lobby, we
got the information that the
proceedings were still in pro-
gress. That’s when PM Modi
decided to halt in the lobby
and sat down on a chair, wait-
ing patiently for the right
time to go in. Immediately the
Marshal came and said “Sir,
you are the PM. You can go in.
You are allowed.”
PM Modi, hearing this,
posed a short and simple ques-
tion,“What’stheprotocol?”He
furthersaid,“IamaLokSabha
member.ALokSabhamember
can attend election proceed-
ings in Rajya Sabha but not as
Prime Minister.” The Marshal
then checked the Rule Book
and said “
As a member of Lok
Sabha,thePMdoesn’thavethe
righttositduringRajyaSabha
proceedingsbuthemayattend
if the Chair makes an excep-
tion for him.”
“Why should I make an ex-
ception for myself ? I don’t
wish to break any rules,” and
our Prime Minister contin-
ued to sit where he was.
This exchange that Naren-
dra Modi had with the Mar-
shal had a great impact on
me. For about 20 minutes, he
and I talked about diverse
topics while people kept barg-
ing in asking him to come and
sit in Rajya Sabha. But no one
could budge Modiji from his
resolve. He equated his situa-
tion with someone waiting at
the crossing for the red light
to turn green and said he
would stay where he was
while the light was still red.
Those 20 minutes taught
valuable lessons to all those
whocameintouchwiththePM
while he waited on the humble
chair outside the Rajya Sabha
with stoic and hermit-like pa-
tience. In the meanwhile, Hari-
vansh Singhji was elected Dep-
uty Chairman and everyone
congratulated him. The corri-
dors were abuzz with talks of
Narendra Modi’s forbearance
andallegiancetohisdutiesand
to parliamentary procedures.
This incident will remain
etched in the memories of all
those fortunate to be part of
the edifying experience in-
stilling in them the impor-
tance of adhering to Parlia-
mentary traditions and rules,
irrespective of one’s position.

MAN OF THE MOMENT
ssociated with the Sangh family of Guja-
rat, Alkaben Bakshi found a saviour in
PM Modi who was then serving as a
Sangh Pracharak, when she lost her hus-
band in 1982. Alkaben brings to us her
story about the gentle and compassionate
side of Narendra Modi that illumines the
fact that the daughters of the Sangh family always
have his back in adversity
.
“When I lost my husband in 1982 in a gruesome
accident, I was devastated. At the time I was living
at Maninagar in Ahmedabad while my parents were
in Vadodra. The Sangh office was located in Dhor
Bazaar and Narendra Bhai used to reside in the of-
fice premises. As soon as he received the news about
the accident, he rushed to Maninagar to console me
and my family in the hour of grief. Narendra Bhai
immediately took charge of the ornaments and cash
in the house, and my husband’s bike and had them
placed safely in the Sangh office. All these belong-
ings were handed over to me by Narendra Bhai after
about ten days when the last rites had been per-
formed. The words of compassion and wisdom he
spoke to me at that time still ring in my ears. He
asked me to keep all the ornaments safely to secure
my daughter’s future.
Even now when I am in luck and get to meet Modi-
ji, he inquires about my well-being and blesses me.
When I was in dire straits and was running pillar to
posttohavethemedicalandaccidentclaimprocessed,
he sent in a request to Harish Patelji, who was a sen-
ior lawyer at Gujarat High Court at the time. My case
was handled by Harishji and after his death, by his
son and after the judgement was pronounced, they
did not charge me a single penny for fighting my case.
It is an assurance that I can render based on my
personal experiences that under the umbrella care
of Narendra Bhai, the daughters of the Sangh fam-
ily have little to fear because their brother is always
there, looking after them.”

New Delhi (PTI): The
power ministry has di-
rected all imported
coal-based plants to
run on full capacity
amid the ongoing dry
fuel shortage at ther-
mal plants crippling
electricity generation.
In an office order is-
sued in this regard on
Thursday by the minis-
try
, it is noted that most
of the states have al-
lowed pass-through of
the higher cost of im-
ported coal to consum-
ers, which aided to
make operational
10,000 MW capacity out
of the total 17,600 MW
imported coal-based

country
.
However, the minis-
try said that “some im-
ported coal-based ca-
pacity is still not oper-
ating”.
The ministry issued
directions under Sec-
tion 11 of the Electric-
ity Act. It has directed
that all imported coal-
based power plants
shall operate and gen-
erate power to their
full capacity
.
In the case of im-
ported coal-based
plants under the insol-
vency proceeding, the
resolution profession-
als will take steps to
make them functional.
These plants will
supply power in the
first instance to the
PPA (power purchase
agreement) holders
(discoms). Any surplus
power left thereafter or
any power for which
there is no PPA will be
sold in the power ex-
changes, ministry said.

“The need for coal is

the increased demand
for electricity. There-
fore, we need to ramp
up our coal production
to meet this growing en-
ergy requirement,”
Joshi said at an inves-

He said the target of
the coal ministry is
to minimise the import
of thermal coal and
to make the country

sector.

New Delhi (PTI): The All India Power Engineers Federation has urged the
central government to compensate states for importing coal in the absence
of adequate dry fuel for thermal plants. “AIPEF has demanded that the Centre
compensate each and every state that is being forced to import coal in absence
of adequate domestic coal. In absence of this financial help, financial condition
of the utilities will deteriorate further,” an AIPEF statement said. The federation
has written a letter to Union Power Minister R K Singh in this regard.

He said that goods

He also asked project
exporters to diversify

.
The petition was filed
by a Pune-based activ-
ist, Hemant Patil and is
likely to be mentioned

Patil who also heads an

may cause unrest
among the party work-
ers leading to disrup-
tion of peace in the
state. He sought the reg-
istration of a case of
sedition against the
MNS chief.
Notably, Thackeray,
during his rally on May
1, had charged the NCP
chief of “dividing Ma-
harashtra in caste poli-
tics” and also added
that Pawar is an atheist.
Following his speech,
the Aurangabad police
registered an FIR
against the MNS chief
after seeing the viral
videos of his rally.
Meanwhile, Raj Thack-
eray had reiterated his
ultimatum to remove

We should move away from mediocrity: VP Naidu to academia
First India Bureau
Chandigarh: Vice
President M Venkaiah
Naidu on Friday em-
phasized the need for
Universities to accord
greater importance to
implementable patents
under Intellectual
Property rights to give
a fillip to economy and
industry. He termed it
necessary to strengthen
industry-institute link-
ages for better research
outcomes.
Addressing the 69th
Convocation ceremony
of Panjab University
in Chandigarh, Naidu
said that we should
move away from medi-
ocrity and not be satis-
fied with what we have
achieved. He also ex-
horted Panjab Univer-
sity to work towards
attaining ranks in top
ten universities glob-
ally. Naidu wanted the
universities to further
create an environment
of continuous profes-
sional development for
teachers, and asked
faculty members to fo-
cus on ground-break-
ing research.
Stressing that Uni-
versities must be at the
forefront of the knowl-
edge revolution,
through path breaking
innovations and cut-
ting edge research, the
Vice President wanted
closer interaction be-
tween Universities and
government so that
more robust policies

Calling for making

ident wanted such edu-
cation to lead to a posi-
tive transformation in

societal cohesion and
inclusive national de-

USE KNOWLEDGE TO CHANGE THE WORLD
First India Bureau
Jaipur: Rajasthan
Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot on Friday al-
leged that the BJP and
the government run by
it at the Centre are sup-
pressing the media,
which only shows de-
bates on religious po-
larisation while ignor-
ing real issues.
Gehlot said this ex-
pressing concern over
India’s ranking in the
Press Freedom Index, in
which country stood at
150th spot among 180 na-
tions.
“This indicates the
misery of the Indian
media,” Gehlot tweeted,
adding that the media
should not come under
the pressure of the cen-
tral government and
support people.
He said since Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi-led government
came into power at the
Centre in 2014, there has
been a “vicious cycle of
media suppression”.
The media is completely
running at the behest of
the central government,
BJP and RSS, he alleged.
“There is so much
fear in the media that
instead of showing the
truth with fairness and
logic, the coverage is
done in a way that that
they do not face their
displeasure,” Gehlot
said attacking the BJP.
“Today, there is huge
resentment among peo-
ple due to inflation and
unemployment but
there is no discussion in
the media on this. They
only show debates re-
lated to religious polari-
sation,” the CM said.
Gehlot said the public
will support the media
once it starts taking up
their issues. “Then the
central government will
not have the courage to
curb the media as it is
doing presently,” Gehlot
said. —With PTI inputs

SLAMS CENTRE
SC refers to 5-judge Bench
dispute over control of services
New Delhi (ANI): The
Supreme Court on Fri-
day referred the issue
regarding the control
over administrative ser-
vices in the national
capital to a five-judge
Constitution Bench for
adjudication.
A bench of Chief Jus-
tice of India NV Rama-
na, Justices Surya Kant
and Hima Kohli said
that it appears that the
five-judge Bench had de-
cided all issues of dis-
pute between Centre
and Delhi govt, except
the ‘services’ while re-
ferring the issue to the
Constitution Bench.
It listed for hearing
on May 11 before the
five-judge Bench for
hearing of arguments
from both the Centre
and Delhi government
on who should control
the ‘services’.
The Bench on April 28
had reserved the order
on whether to refer to
the Constitution Bench
on the issue of who
should control adminis-
trative services in Delhi.
The Central govt had
sought a hearing by a
five-judge Bench on the
matter pertaining to the
legal dispute between
the Delhi government
and the Central govern-
ment regarding the con-
trol over administrative
services in the national
capital. Aam Aadmi
Party-led Delhi govern-
ment had strongly op-
posed the plea of the
Central government.
The Central govern-
ment in its application
sought a referral to a
Constitution Bench for
a holistic interpretation
of Article 239AA.
Solicitor General
Tushar Mehta appeared
for the Centre while sen-
ior advocate Abhishek
Manu Singhvi repre-
sented the Delhi govt.
The Delhi govt had
filed petitions in the
apex court on control
over services and chal-
lenging the constitu-
tional validity of the
amended GNCTD Act,
2021 and the Transac-
tion of Business Rules,
which allegedly give
more powers to the
Lieutenant Governor
respectively, saying
they are “prima facie
correlated”.
During the hearing,
Solicitor General Tush-
ar Mehta had contended
that the case should be
heard by a Constitution
Bench and not a three-
judge one as it involved
several crucial constitu-
tional questions of law.
The Central govt had
contended that despite a
Constitutional Bench
comprehensively evalu-
atingaschemeof govern-
ance for the national
capital, the administra-
tion continued to suffer
on a daily basis due to a
lack of clarity in relation
totheexecutiveauthority
.
Solicitor General Me-
hta had said that the
matter needed to be sent
to a Constitution Bench
on grounds including
that the earlier judge-
ments of the five-judge
Bench did not give “any
roadmap” to decide as
to whether the Union or
the Delhi government
will have the compe-
tence to deal with the
subject under dispute.

RUBAL SHEKHAWAT, A
STUNNING DIVA FROM JAIPUR,
SPOKE CANDIDLY WITH CITY FIRST
ABOUT HER INSPIRING JOURNEY, FAMILY
BACKGROUND AND CAREER GOALS AS A MODEL.
SHE EVEN SPOKE ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS
TO STRIKE A PERFECT BALANCE IN LIFE.
RUBAL SHEKHAWAT: A RAVISHING
VERSION OF CHARM
Describe yourself and what ac-
cording to you are some vital
skills or characteristics that one
should have to make it to the
modelling world?
My name is Rubal Shekhawat
and I am from Jaipur. I have
done graduation and I am a mod-
el, actress and content creator by
profession. I have travelled
across the country because I hail
from a defense background. This
made me very much interested
in travelling to various places
so that I can discover new cul-
tures and participate in ad-
venturous activities. In
my opinion determina-
tion, a consistently
healthy lifestyle and
true dedication to the profes-
sion are essential for modelling.
If you could go in the future and
give yourself some advice about
your career what would it be?
Yes, I would give myself some
advice regarding the healthcare
regime. I would tell myself to
take better care of my health be-
cause initially, my hectic shoot-
ing schedules taxed my health.
What made you find a model in
you?
Modelling was my childhood
dream and I am delighted that
it came true. I used to look up
to Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya
Rai, Priyanka Chopra and
Manushi Chhillar. They all in-
spired me to become a good pro-
fessional. I think my spontane-
ity also made me discover the
model within me. My passion
and dedication to creating my
own identity made me find the
job I was made for.
What according to you was the
biggest mistake made by you
when you started?
The biggest mistake that I com-
mitted was when I took my
health for granted. I used to
be out for shoots from
early morning to late
night and was left bereft
of home-cooked meals. In
the beginning, I could not
manage it well and at times
even ate unhealthy food. Then
I worked on it and made a health
and skin regime which I reli-
giously follow now.
What has been the most memo-
rable or rewarding moment in
your career?
There are so many memorable
and rewarding moments in my
life. Starting with the most re-
cent, winning the title of Femina
Miss India Rajasthan 2022 made
me proud of myself. One of them
is when I did an advertisement
with Ranveer Singh. I have also
done a song with Emraan Hash-
mi and it made me so happy. I am
proud of all that I have done.

he last novel Ernest
Hemingway saw
published, ‘The Old
Man and the Sea’
had proved itself to
be one of the most
enduring works of American
fiction. Using the simple,
powerful language of a fable,
Hemingway takes the time-
less theme of courage- in the
face of defeat and personal
triumph won from loss and
transforms it into a magnifi-
cent 20th Century classic.
Written in 1952, this hugely
successful novel confirmed
Hemingway’s power and
presence in the literary
world. It got him the Pulitzer
Prize in 1953 and the Nobel
Prize for Literature in 1954.
Hemingway was known
for his larger-than-life per-
sonality- due to his passion
for war (he was injured
twice), bullfighting, fishing
and big- game hunting. He
survived two plane crashes!
He viewed the world of war
as complex, filled with moral
ambiguities and full of una-
voidable pain, hurt de-
struction. To survive in such
a world, and to emerge victo-
riously, one must conduct
oneself with honour, cour-
age, endurance and dignity- a
set of principles that came to
be known as ‘The Heming-
way Code’. This was the
theme established in ‘The
Old Man and the Sea’. It’s a
perfectly crafted story, a
unique and timeless vision
of the beauty and grief of
man’s challenge to the ele-
ments in which he lives. “The
old man knew he had one
good fight left in him- so did
Hemingway- they both won-
as we gain insight into what
it means to struggle- to fight
against long odds, succeed!
Only to be beaten at the last
moment…”
‘The Old Man and the Sea’
is the story of an epic strug-
gle between an old, seasoned,
Cuban fisherman and the
greatest catch of his life. For
84 days, Santiago had set out
to sea and returned empty-
handed. Terming him un-
lucky, the parents of his
young, devoted, apprentice
and friend- Manolin, forced
the boy to leave the old man
for more prosperous fishing
boats. Santiago is a mentor to
the boy, who cherishes the
old man and the life lessons
he imparts. “There are many
good fishermen and some
great ones. But there is only
one you.” He does his best to
help and support Santiago
with the boat, supplies, food,
bait etc.
With age and luck now
against him, Santiago knows
he must row out “beyond all
people”, away from land and
into the Gulf Stream, “where
one last drama would be
played out, in an empty arena
of sea and sky”. The old man
hooks a Marlin fish- which is
even bigger than his boat. All
alone, he is tested to the lim-
its as he works the line with
bleeding hands, to bring his
prized catch close enough to
kill with a harpoon. He strug-
gles with the fish for three
days, admiring its strength,
dignity and faithfulness to its
identity- empathizing with it.
He finally reels the Marlin in
and lashes it to the boat. As
he sets sail for home, the con-
tinuous attack by multiple
sharks begins. He fights off
and kills many, but cannot
save his precious Marlin. He
reaches the shore with only
the skeleton, head and tail of
the great fish. Through his
struggle, Santiago demon-
strates the ability of the hu-
man spirit to endure hard-
ship and suffering to win. It
is also his deep love and
knowledge of the sea, in its
impassive cruelty and benef-
icence, that allows him to
prevail. The essential physi-
cality of the story- the smells
of tar salt fish blood, the
cramp nausea and blind
exhaustion of the old man,
the terrifying death spasms
of thegreatfish-issetagainst
the ethereal qualities of daz-
zling light and water, isola-
tion, the swelling motion
of the sea. And through it all
the narrative is constantly
tugging, unreeling a little
more, and then pulling again,
all in tandem with the old
man’s struggle.
“The best story Heming-
way has written- no page of
this beautiful master-work
could have been done better
or differently”. It is unsur-
passed in Hemingway’s
oeuvre. Every word tells
there is not a word too many
.
It is a story that demands to
be read in a single sitting.

following, working in
different genres and
many others.
About his on-

schedule, the
actor said, “I
haven’t slept for the
past 48 hours because
the promotions of the
title track were very
important. But be-
cause it has gotten
such great reactions, I
feel very energetic
about everything. I am
very elated by the re-

Talking about his
image as the people’s
star, Kartik shared
that he can relate to
the fans because he
came from a similar
crowd. “I do not try to
form that connection;
it comes out very natu-
rally
. Whenever I meet
a fan, I see my past self
in them. Even yester-

me feel empowered. I
just look at them as an

mutual.”
About the
pressures of
delivering
good films,
the actor
revealed that although
choosing scripts re-
quires destiny and
strategy, he also ma-

they are loved by the
crowd. “Like if no one
likes a certain film of
mine, there is a pres-
sure of why did they
not like it and what
difference can I bring
out that fans would
love to see. There is an
appeal to mass enter-
tainers. I feel blessed
that I am getting the
chance to work on
such scripts and act in
such films and portray
such characters.”
The actor even
called portraying
Rooh in Bhool Bhulai- yaa 2 as playing an
easy game on his turf.
“The idea is that do
what you are good at
but also choose films
from other genres if
they come across you
and if you like the
story
. I am just explor-

The actor further
spoke about his love
life claiming that he is

“I am just happy about

that they like both, my

About comparing
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 to
its prequel, Kartik
said, “Since the trailer

Sutra, ‘Decoding the

. A book
that connects the ancient science

veiled by the Chief Guest, Dr
Karan Singh, and Guest of hon-
our, Dr Naresh Trehan. The book
is the first in a series of self-help
books by Vigyan Yoga, a plat-
form that focuses on science,
logic, and the ultimate truth. Co-
authored by Acharya Kaushal
Kumar, a globally acclaimed
voice on yoga and thought leader
and industrialist, Jai Singhania,
the book written in a free-flow-
ing style is an easy read interpre-
tation of the Yoga Sutras by Pa-
tanjali. Compiled in the early
century by Sage Patanjali, Yoga
Sutra was the most translated
scripture in the medieval era.
Yoga Sutra believes that our
thoughts are the reason that we
are entangled with the material
world which we believe is our
only source of happiness. But,
when we stop our thoughts with
practice, then that connection
with the material world is bro-
ken and we get established in
ourselves. CK Birla, Padmaja
Ruparel, Arvind Singhania, and
YK Modi amongst other leading
luminaries graced the event
with their presence. Also, Wil-
liam Bissell, MD, and chairman
of Fab India spoke on the occa-
sion. The authors also explain
the way to elevate your mind
from focus and concentration to
meditation. Concentration, med-
itation, and samadhi, together
are called Sanyama. “ In our in-
terpretation of the book, we have
called out the unrealistic nature
of these superpowers, which
many books have established as
fact”, concludes Jai, the seeker
of inner silence.

SKIN CARE HOLY GRAIL: SERUMS
Ditching heavy mois-

do the serums work the
magic this season?
Tells Nidhi Grover
MONICA PRABHAKAR
cityfirst@firstindia.co.in
What is your opinion on vitamin C and
how to incorporate it into a skin care
routine?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that works
to stimulate collagen production in your skin. It
also fights fine lines, brightens complexion
provides a host of other benefits. You can incor-
porate Vitamin C in your skin care in three
forms-
• 1. Cleanser: Choose a non-irritating, gentle
cleanser that is free of sulphates, and other
harsh ingredients.
• 2. Toner: Toners are a vital step in
the skin care routine as they help
tighten pores, remove dirt, oil, or
makeup, and restore the pH bal-
ance of the skin. They also aid in
moisture retention for a healthy
,
glowing complexion.
• 3. Serum: Using vitamin C
serum is the easiest and most ef-
ficient way to deliver nutrients to
your skin. Once or twice applica-
tion a week results in reduced free
radicals and regenerated skin cells.
Unlike cleansers and toners, a serum
offers quick and visible results with
just a few drops applied to the skin.
What are AHA/BHA prod-
ucts and how can they be used
for effective results?
Alpha Hydroxy Acids(AHAs) and
Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are both
chemical exfoliating agents that
help remove dead skin cells from
the top layer of your skin. They
also have anti-ageing effects like
smoothing fine lines improving
the texture of the skin. It’s advisable
to get a patch test done before incor-
porating AHA and BHA into your
skin care routine so It should be used
in prescribed quantities only fol-
lowed by a good amount of moistur-
iser( as prescribed by the doctor).
Along with topical serums and
creams, what supplements are
important for healthy skin?
Vitamins, minerals probiotics are
required to have good skin, hair and
nails. Achieving an optimum level
of healthcare along with great
skin, through diet alone on daily
bases is often not realistic today.
Supplements like A, B, C, D, E K
all are equally important and incor-
porate goodness in overall health.
Along with these vitamins addition-
al omega 3 fatty acids, glutathione,
zinc, minerals and probiotics should
be added as per requirement for
great results.
