This document contains excerpts from the Bible discussing different individuals who found hope or encouragement through faith. It references Samuel setting up the stone of Ebenezer to commemorate God's help, David encouraging himself through prayer when faced with difficulties, and Abraham and Sarah receiving God's promise that Sarah would bear a son in her old age despite it being seemingly impossible. The overarching message is to remember to hope again through encouraging oneself to pray and have faith in God despite one's circumstances.

Paul loved these people deeply, and because of that he wanted them to be the church that would give him the greatest joy, and the way they could do that is by
being the greatest examples of Christ-likeness in their relationship to one another. He is here motivating them toward that goal by getting them to focus on what they
already have in Christ. If they will count their blessings, it will motivate them to be united in their love for one another.
Was Joab a loyal General to David? In his heart, maybe he was being loyal. But in reality, he did things his own way and really didn't care what David wanted.

King Saul dies, and David finally becomes king over Judah, but not of all Israel. In his experience, we can see that "success" is enjoyable, but also provides us with a test! Will we loosen our morals? Will we try to "coast" with God? Will we set ourselves up for future catastrophes?

We have seen that one of the greatest weaknesses of God’s people is that they consistently feared giants. They feared entering the Promised Land because it was filled with giants. And in 1 Samuel we see that their descendants are paralyzed for 40 days and 40 nights as a giant named Goliath, taunted God’s people and extinguished their faith in God’s might, until a young man, the runt of his father’s litter, came with the heart of Joshua and Caleb. Where others saw a 9-foot colossus of a man, David saw an uncircumcised Philistine not deserving of having his name mentioned. David becomes Israel’s champion and slays Goliath. 1000 years later, David’s direct descendant, Jesus, came to slay the Goliath of our sin. Whereas David used the unlikely weapon of a sling and 5 smooth stones, Jesus wielded an even more unlikely weapon. He slayed our sin wielding a rugged cross upon which he died. But he became more than a martyr. He rose from the dead and became God’s champion who defeated both sin and death.

6. David
1Sa 30:1 And it happened when David and his men had come to Ziklag on the
third day, the Amalekites had invaded the south and Ziklag, and had struck
Ziklag, and burned it with fire.
30:2 And they had seized the women in it. They did not kill any, either small or
great, but carried them away and went on their way.
30:3 And David and his men came to the city, and behold, it was burned with
fire, and their wives and their sons and their daughters had been taken
captives.
30:4 And David and the people with him lifted up their voice and wept, until
they had no more power to weep.
30:5 And David's two wives had been seized, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail,
the former wife of Nabal of Carmel.
7. David
1Sa 30:6 And it greatly distressed David, for the people
spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people
was grieved, each one for his sons and for his daughters.
But David encouraged himself in Jehovah his God.
8. David
1Sa 30:18 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had
carried away. And David rescued his two wives.
1Sa 30:19 And nothing was lacking to them, from the small to
the great, even to sons and daughters, and from the spoil, even
to all that they had taken to themselves. David recovered all.
10. Abraham
Gen 18:9 And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he
said, Behold, in the tent. 18:10 And He said, I will certainly return
to you according to the time of life, and lo, Sarah your wife shall
have a son. And Sarah heard in the tent door which was behind
Him. 18:11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, far gone in days,
and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
18:12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After my
being old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? 18:13
And Jehovah said to Abraham, Why did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall
I, who am old, truly bear a child? 18:14 Is anything too hard for
Jehovah? At the time appointed I will return again, according to the
time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
