Mumbai: The state
government has an-
nounced that two let-
ters of the Marathi al-
phabet have “Hindi
influence” and will,
henceforth be written
in a certain way in the
Devanagari script, an
official said on Sun-
day.
Notably, while Hindi
and Marathi both use
the Devanagiri script,
Marathi has multiple
letters to indicate
slight variations in the
spoken form of certain
letters—unlike Hindi.
The changes will be
applicable in all gov-
ernment communica-
tion as well as text-
books recommended by
the state education
board, he said.
“The letters ‘La’ and
‘Sha’ are written cur-
rently in a style that
bears the influence of
Hindi. The state gov-

cided through an order
that they will be writ-
ten in the Devanagari

UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 18
‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’
PM MODI: AN INSPIRING,
MAGNETIC PERSONALITY
Meet the man who Brands India,
Educates India, Guides India - PM
minent Gujarati writer, Jay
Vasavada recalls how Modi-
ji’s unique vision and re-
sponses to seemingly obvi-
ous situations made him a
better marketer, educator
and a writer. Modiji’s in-
spiring thoughts, encourageme
nt and
out-of-the-bo
x examples in practical
life remain a guiding light for him.
What are Navratri? It is Modiji who
showed the world the grandeur and splen-
dour of Navratri. In one simple sentence
Modiji explained what Navratri are when
he described them as “the longest
running song and dance festival
of the world.” It is my observa-
tion that Modiji forms an in-
stant bond with people who
harbor love for erudition and
writing. His magnetic perso-
na attracts such people to
him and there is a natural
connect between Modiji
and men of letters.
Modiji initiated the
Vibrant Gujarat cam-
paign when he was
the Chief Minister
and I can recollect
vividly, he intro-
duced the con-
cept of “Five
Shaktis”. He
spoke about
Jan Shakti,
R a k s h a
Shakti and
for the cam-
paign he in-
vited a few se-
lect writers to his
bungalow.
I was
quite taken aback when I
found my name amongst those
who had been chosen by Modiji
for this endeavor. I reached his
residence and met him and Ad-
vaniji, who too was present
there. Much to my surprise,
Modiji knew all about me. I
mean, I would have been sur-
prised if it was someone from
the Information
Department
who was aware of my work
and had recommended
me to
Modiji. But it was Modiji
knew all about me. He re-
ferred to the books I had au-
thored, the last article I had
written, and spoke about
my passion for collecting
books. My library is the
greatest wealth I own
and I was completely
floored when Modiji
mentioned my library
to me. It was indeed a
pleasant feeling to have
my work acknowledged
by someone none other
than the CM.
One sentence spoken
by Modiji made me his
mureed. I was teaching
Marketing
Manage-
ment at that time and
when Modiji brought
up the brilliant idea of
marketing Navratri to
the world as the
“World’s longest run-
ning song and dance
festival”,
I was
stumped. He said that
we can google, at that
time the internet too
was in its nascent
stages, and know all
about the carnivals
in Brazil and Ire-
land but they run on for only two or three
days. But think of the Indian Navratri –
we celebrate this auspicious festival for 9
days and still the world knows very little
about it. Navratri are nothing without
Garba and are a celebration
of life. We
cannot think of Navratri without the raas
and dance. All Gujaratis understand what
Navratri are all about, but how to make
the world aware of this rich and wonder-
ful Indian carnival? It took only one sen-
tence for Modiji to brand Navratri in such
a powerful way that brought the Indian
9-day carnival so much fame!
When Vibrant Gujarat campaign came
to Gujarat, I was invited to speak at the
event at Mahatma Mandir. Modiji deliv-
ered a powerful speech as usual at the
event. In a personal conversation,
Modiji
said “We should let people read whatever
they wish to. It is not important where
people begin reading from. It is not of
consequence
whether people cultivate a
habit of reading by reading Swami Vive-
kanand or our own Manubhai Pancholi,
who goes by the pen name Darshak - no,
that is not the question.” To further elu-
cidate this point, Modiji cited the example
of a heavily loaded truck that is taking a
turn. It must move slowly, steadily and
take a nicely, calculated turn. If the truck
rushes on, it is bound to overturn. Thus
young children should not be forced to
read particular writers or books. They
must be allowed to explore the world of
books and reading and grow at their indi-
vidual pace. Now, this is how a perfect
teacher thinks and Modiji definitely is
one!
Modiji, at one point, showed me how to
think about branding and now he showed
me how to act like a teacher. During the
Vibrant Gujarat Campaign,
we do not
limit ourselves to inviting Indian lumi-
naries; we go ahead and showcase our
culture and heritage to the world by invit-
ing dignitaries from other countries. We
invite nations such as Israel, Korea and
Japan. We do not compete with other In-
dian states. As CM, Modiji would say,
“We’ve got a global campaign!”
So his vi-
sion and appeal at that time too was uni-
versal and all-inclusive.
I vividly recollect the Aug 15 celebra-
tions for which I had been invited. I was
carrying a copy of my latest book Life @
Kite but when I went ahead and presented
it to Modiji, his first question to me was
“Have you presented copy of your book to
the Governor?”
Now, let me tell you,
Modiji was the inspiration
behind the
concept of the book. He had told me that
I must project big and come up with qual-
ity work - be it my books, my words, my
campaign!
So when I went up to present the book
to him, he asked me if I had one more
copy and took the book to the Governor
himself. He said “Meet Jay Vasadeva, the
much loved youth writer from Gujarat
who will be honoured today in the event.
Here’s a copy of his latest book for you!”
Well, my father, out of much happiness
and excitement,
had moved a little to-
wards the front row. The guard stopped
him and my face was turned the other
way where I could not see what was hap-
pening. It was Modiji who noticed my
father and immediately
sent for someone
to escort him to the front row, from where
he could watch the proceedings.
And
then, Modiji did not just present the roll
of honour to me, but honoured my father
at the event as well. Thus, it is my good
fortune that I have known Modiji’s
thoughts, his vision and experienced
his
greatness closely

Bhaskar Halami’s life
is an example of what
one can achieve with
sheer hard work and
determination.
The researcher was
recently felicitated by
Additional Commis-
sioner of state Tribal
Development, Ravindra
Thakre, in Gadchiroli.
The department rolled
out its “A Tea with Trib-

ment section of Sir-
naomics Inc, a biophar-
maceutical company in
Maryland, USA.
Halami was the first
science graduate from
Chirchadiandfirstfrom
the village to earn a
Master’s degree and
PhD. The 44-year-old re-
called that in the initial
years of his childhood,
his family survived on
very little. “We had to
strugglesomuchtoeven
get one square meal. My
parents till recently
wondered how the fam-
ily survived that phase
when there was no food
or work,” said the
44-year-old scientist.
“My father under-
stood the value of edu-
cation and ensured
that my siblings and I
completed our stud-
ies,” he said.
After earning a
Bachelor of Science
degree from a college
in Gadchiroli, Halami
got his Masters in
chemistry degree from
the Institute of Sci-
ence in Nagpur.
In 2003, Halami was
appointed as an assis-
tant professor in the
prestigious Laxmi-
narayan Institute of
Technology (LIT) in
Nagpur.
While he cleared the
Maharashtra Public

(MPSC) examination,
Halami’s focus re-
mained on research and
he went on to pursue a
PhD from Michigan
Technological Univer-
sity in the United States
and chose DNA and
RNA for his research,
foreseeing a huge poten-
tial in it.
Halami credits his
success to his parents,
who worked hard and
contributed their mea-
gre earnings towards
his education.
During his trips to In-

schools,ashramschools,
colleges and even meets
students at his house to
counsel them about ca-

Nanded: The Congress
party’s state unit pres-

also alleged that the

“Why is CM Shinde

this government can col-
lapse. This regime came

He pointed out that CM

Kirtikar has recently

The Congress, along
with the Shiv Sena and

which fell in June.
“We will start a cam-

he is not fit as a leader.
There is a lot of dissatis-
faction among voters so
we are going to organize
a bike rally on Wednes-

party so he should also
leave his MP post too,”
said Nirupam.
“He is zero on the

The monument,

Mumbai: In an island
city with heavy traf-
fic like Mumbai water
taxi is a welcome op-
tion to travel. How-
ever, daily commuters
are finding it to be an
expensive mode of
transportation.
A water taxi service
started this year on Feb-
ruary 17 covering three
routes, all starting at
Belapur. The one-way
fare to the Mumbai Do-
mestic Cruise Terminal
(DCT) is Rs200, while
the round-trip fare to
Elephanta Caves is
Rs750. The third route
to Jawaharlal Nehru
Port Transport (JNPT)
in Navi Mumbai costs
Rs800 for a round trip.
Most of the residents
of Navi Mumbai say
that they will not be us-
ing the service often
since travelling in a wa-
ter taxi is not a pocket-
friendly option.
According to them,
although it’s a stress-
free experience when
compared to local
trains, one has to hire
cab/rickshaw for last
mile connectivity,
which ends up taking
the same time. So it
does not check both the
boxes of affordability
and saving time.
Another drawback of
the water taxis is their
fixed timings and
doesn’t suit those who
require flexible timings.
Thewatertaxiservice
fromDCTtoMandwa,in
Raigad district, was
started from November
01 and was operating
during morning, after-
noon and in the evening.
Due to less footfall, how-
ever, only two round
trips have been running
since November 10.
According to some
daily commuters, al-
though the water taxi
is built at par with in-
ternational standards
and promises safety
along with comfort,
there is already a jetty
connecting Gateway to
Mandwa, which is a
more affordable option
and takes almost the
same time.

Brakes on seatbelt action till Nov 15
First India Bureau
Mumbai: After facing
criticism for enforc-
ing penalties on mo-
torists, the Mumbai
traffic police has tem-
porarily discontinued
the “seatbelt” action.
On October 14, the
department announced
that they will begin pe-
nalizing motorists and
co-passengers who did
not wear seatbelts
when travelling within
city limits.
The order was to be
implemented from No-

However, according to
the sources the joint
commissioner of traffic
police, has told the staff
to go easy on motorists
and fine only those who
aren’t wearing seatbelts
despite having them in
their cars. Cab drivers
have also been given till
November-end to install
seat belts.
However, the taxi un-
ion has requested three
months to comply with
the orders.
Joint Commissioner
of Police (Traffic),
Mumbai, Rajvardhan
Sinha, on Saturday, is-
sued orders to discon-
tinue the action till
next week.
“During the first 10
days, we have made citi-
zens aware about the
seat belts. Now, the ac-
tion on passengers not
wearing it will start
from Tuesday, Novem-
ber 15,” said a senior
traffic official.
Meanwhile, police

UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI - PART 18
‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’
PM MODI: AN INSPIRING,
MAGNETIC PERSONALITY
Meet the man who Brands India,
Educates India, Guides India - PM
minent Gujarati writer, Jay
Vasavada recalls how Modi-
ji’s unique vision and re-
sponses to seemingly obvi-
ous situations made him a
better marketer, educator
and a writer. Modiji’s in-
spiring thoughts, encouragement and
out-of-the-box examples in practical
life remain a guiding light for him.
What are Navratri? It is Modiji who
showed the world the grandeur and splen-
dour of Navratri. In one simple sentence
Modiji explained what Navratri are when
he described them as “the longest
running song and dance festival
of the world.” It is my observa-
tion that Modiji forms an in-
stant bond with people who
harbor love for erudition and
writing. His magnetic perso-
na attracts such people to
him and there is a natural
connect between Modiji
and men of letters.
Modiji initiated the
Vibrant Gujarat cam-
paign when he was
the Chief Minister
and I can recollect
vividly, he intro-
duced the con-
cept of “Five
Shaktis”. He
spoke about
Jan Shakti,
R a k s h a
Shakti and
for the cam-
paign he in-
vited a few se-
lect writers to his
bungalow. I was
quite taken aback when I
found my name amongst those
who had been chosen by Modiji
for this endeavor. I reached his
residence and met him and Ad-
vaniji, who too was present
there. Much to my surprise,
Modiji knew all about me. I
mean, I would have been sur-
prised if it was someone from
the Information Department
who was aware of my work
and had recommended me to
Modiji. But it was Modiji
knew all about me. He re-
ferred to the books I had au-
thored, the last article I had
written, and spoke about
my passion for collecting
books. My library is the
greatest wealth I own
and I was completely
floored when Modiji
mentioned my library
to me. It was indeed a
pleasant feeling to have
my work acknowledged
by someone none other
than the CM.
One sentence spoken
by Modiji made me his
mureed. I was teaching
Marketing Manage-
ment at that time and
when Modiji brought
up the brilliant idea of
marketing Navratri to
the world as the
“World’s longest run-
ning song and dance
festival”, I was
stumped. He said that
we can google, at that
time the internet too
was in its nascent
stages, and know all
about the carnivals
in Brazil and Ire-
land but they run on for only two or three
days. But think of the Indian Navratri –
we celebrate this auspicious festival for 9
days and still the world knows very little
about it. Navratri are nothing without
Garba and are a celebration of life. We
cannot think of Navratri without the raas
and dance. All Gujaratis understand what
Navratri are all about, but how to make
the world aware of this rich and wonder-
ful Indian carnival? It took only one sen-
tence for Modiji to brand Navratri in such
a powerful way that brought the Indian
9-day carnival so much fame!
When Vibrant Gujarat campaign came
to Gujarat, I was invited to speak at the
event at Mahatma Mandir. Modiji deliv-
ered a powerful speech as usual at the
event. In a personal conversation, Modiji
said “We should let people read whatever
they wish to. It is not important where
people begin reading from. It is not of
consequence whether people cultivate a
habit of reading by reading Swami Vive-
kanand or our own Manubhai Pancholi,
who goes by the pen name Darshak - no,
that is not the question.” To further elu-
cidate this point, Modiji cited the example
of a heavily loaded truck that is taking a
turn. It must move slowly, steadily and
take a nicely, calculated turn. If the truck
rushes on, it is bound to overturn. Thus
young children should not be forced to
read particular writers or books. They
must be allowed to explore the world of
books and reading and grow at their indi-
vidual pace. Now, this is how a perfect
teacher thinks and Modiji definitely is
one!
Modiji, at one point, showed me how to
think about branding and now he showed
me how to act like a teacher. During the
Vibrant Gujarat Campaign, we do not
limit ourselves to inviting Indian lumi-
naries; we go ahead and showcase our
culture and heritage to the world by invit-
ing dignitaries from other countries. We
invite nations such as Israel, Korea and
Japan. We do not compete with other In-
dian states. As CM, Modiji would say,
“We’ve got a global campaign!” So his vi-
sion and appeal at that time too was uni-
versal and all-inclusive.
I vividly recollect the Aug 15 celebra-
tions for which I had been invited. I was
carrying a copy of my latest book Life @
Kite but when I went ahead and presented
it to Modiji, his first question to me was
“Have you presented copy of your book to
the Governor?” Now, let me tell you,
Modiji was the inspiration behind the
concept of the book.
Well, my father, out of much happiness
and excitement, had moved a little to-
wards the front row. The guard stopped
him and my face was turned the other
way where I could not see what was hap-
pening. It was Modiji who noticed my
father and immediately sent for someone
to escort him to the front row, from where
he could watch the proceedings. And
then, Modiji did not just present the roll
of honour to me, but honoured my father
at the event as well. Thus, it is my good
fortune that I have known Modiji’s
thoughts, his vision and experienced his
greatness closely

New Delhi: Bihar
Chief Minister Nitish
Kumar has got his first
ally outside Bihar.
Ever since he broke
ties with the BJP and
formed an alliance
with the Rashtriya Ja-
nata Dal and formed a
new government
in Bihar, he has
been trying to
forge a role in
national poli-
tics. For this,
he visited
Delhi twice
in the past
and met
o p p o s i -
t i o n
leaders. He is also in
touch with socialist
leaders from across the
country, with whom he
did politics in the
eighties and nineties.
Despite this, he has not
yet received open sup-
port from any Sama-
jwadi Party.
Meanwhile, Badrud-
din Ajmal, leader and
MP of Assam’s All In-
dia United Democratic
Front (AIUDF) has an-
nounced to accept Nit-
ish as a leader. Ajmal
has said that if Nitish
Kumar leads the oppo-
sition alliance, he (Aj-
mal) would be ready to
join it. Keep in mind
that Ajmal’s party has
been in coalition with
the Congress in Assam.
But right now both the
parties are doing differ-
ent politics. With Ajmal
siding with Nitish, the
Janata Dal-U can get
some advantage in the
politics of the North-
east. The JDU has been
influential in the north-
eastern states of Ma-
nipur, Nagaland,
Meghalaya and
Arunachal Pradesh.
There are elections in
two of these states next
year. If Nitish’s party
repeats the previous
performance, then JDU
will come closer to be-
coming a national par-
ty
. However, it is not yet
clear whether Nitish
will benefit from Aj-
mal’s support in the
rest of the country or
some parties will dis-
tance himself from him
due to the compulsion
of Hindutva politics.
Will all parties accept Nitish as nat’l leader?

Inflation now at a manageable level: Puri
New Delhi (PTI): The in-
flation is still high com-
pared to the past, but it has
come down to a ‘managea-
ble level’, Pidilite Indus-
tries Managing Director
Bharat Puri has said.
He also expects better
margins in the second half
of this fiscal.
The current quarter will
have some lag due to the
carry forward of some of
the high-priced inventory,
but the fourth quarter
would witness better mar-
gins, Puri said.
He is optimistic about
India and the home im-
provement sector, and Pi-
dilite is ready for the next
phase of growth with its
ongoing capex pro-
gramme.
Puri expects the rural
markets to bounce back
with positive volume
growth, helped by a good
monsoon in next 6 months.
According to Puri, it
will take a little bit of time
but will come back. The
demand is most impacted
in rural and semi-urban
India. “As inflation moder-
ates and more money
comes into the hands of
the consumer because of
the good monsoon, we do
think that over the next six
months, hopefully, demand
should improve from there
also,” Puri told PTI.
On Pidilite Industries,
he said right now, the big-
gest concern over the last
12-18 months was unprec-
edented inflation in the
input cost.
The cost of some princi-
pal raw materials such as
vinyl acetate monomer
(VAM) went up from USD
1,000 per tonne to an all-
time high of USD 2,500 in
the first half of this fiscal,
Puri noted.
However, “the good news
is we can see change hap-
pening” as prices of some
of the raw materials are
softening. The current
price of VAM is down to
$1,200 to 1,400/tonne.
“You will see some im-
pact of this in Q3 but we
would be carrying lots of
inventories... We will actu-
ally have a larger impact in
Q4 when low-priced VAM
is consumed,” he said. Ac-
cording to Puri, the second
half would be “much bet-
ter” than H1 in terms of
margins perspective.

New Delhi (PTI): Inflation
data, global trends and for-
eign fund trading activity
are the major factors that
would drive the domestic
equity market this week,
said analysts.
The last batch of the on-
going quarterly earnings
would also influence trad-
ing, they added. Unabated
foreign fund inflows and a
rally in global equities
drove the equity bench-
marks higher on Friday
.
The 30-share BSE bench-
mark Sensex on Friday
zoomed 1,181.34 points or
1.95% to settle at 61,795.04.
“The sentiment will con-
tinue to be driven by the
movement of the world
markets. The market will
be keeping an eye on our
domestic inflation statis-
tics,” said Pravesh Gour,
Senior Technical Analyst,
Swastika Investmart Ltd.
Ajit Mishra, VP - Re-
search, Religare Broking
Ltd, said, participants will
be eyeing crucial macroe-
conomic data -- CPI and
WPI inflation for cues.
Besides, the perfor-
mance of global indices
and foreign flow trends will
also remain on their radar,
Mishra noted. Investors
would also keep a track on
trend in rupee and move-
ment of Brent crude oil.
Cryptocurrency ‘crash’
caused by Nishad Singh
New Delhi (Agencies):
Indian-origin Nishad Sin-
gh is being scrutinised for
financial practices that
caused the collapse of FTX,
one of the largest crypto-
currency exchanges. Singh
was in the inner circle of
FTX’s 30-year-old founder,
Sam Bankman-Fried.
“Gary Wang (Chief Tech-
nology Officer), Nishad
and Sam control the code,
the exchange’s matching
engine, and funds,” said a
person familiar with the
matter.
Beleaguered crypto ex-
change FTX recently ad-
mitted that “unauthorised
transactions” have drained
hundreds of millions of
dollars from its wallets,
saying the company has
moved many digital assets
to a new “cold wallet custo-
dian”.
FTX, which last week
filed for bankruptcy in the
US, did not reveal how
much it lost in unauthor-
ised transactions but re-
ports claimed the amount
could be as high as $600
million.
Singh’s LinkedIn profile
indicates that he graduat-
ed from the University of

RIL, Nayara to gain
from European
energy crisis
Mumbai (PTI): The ongo-
ing energy crisis in Europe
is expected to benefit Reli-
ance Industries and Na-
yara Energy as these are
among the Asian refiners
that produce winter-speci-
fication diesel for the EU,
according to a report.
State-owned oil compa-
nies are not into exports
and that gives an advan-
tage to Reliance -- the larg-
est importer of Russian
crude and also the largest
exporter of diesel from the
country -- and Russia’s Ros-
neft-owned Nayara.
The energy crisis will
only get further aggravated
going forward as from next
month Opec’s 2-million
barrel per day production
cut comes into force.
Rising interest rates to mute bond

bond issuance is likely to
remain muted witnessing
4-5% growth this fiscal to
touch `41.42 lakh crore on
rising coupon rates, de-
spite the drawdown more
than doubling in the sec-

Bond sales more than
doubled to `2.1 lakh crore
in the second quarter from
the first quarter, when it
was at a multi-year quar-

traditionally largest play-
ers in the market, issuing
securities worth `1.1 lakh
crore in Q2, according to an
analysis by Icra Ratings on
Sunday
.
Non-banking lenders
have remained the largest
issuers of bonds with a
share of 47% in the first
half, followed by corpo-
rates and banks at 33 and
20%, respectively, down
from 50, 40 and 10%, respec-
tively from H1FY22, ac-
cording to the report.
Thanks to bumper sales
in Q2, the overall bond issu-
ances rose to `3.3 lakh
crore in the first half, and
the agency expects `3.7-4.2
lakh crore sales in H2 FY23,
marginally higher than the
year-ago period, taking the
volume of outstanding
bonds to `41-42 lakh crore
by March 2023.

distorting history

Nationalist Congress

maintained that the
movie distorted the his-
tory of Chhatrapati

This has not only de-
famed the Maratha king
but also tarnished the
state’s image and it will
not be tolerated, he said.
“Presenting history

The NCP leader fur-
ther added that the cen-

verify the historical
facts presented in it.
By dubbing the mov-
ie in different languag-

Awhad claimed.

you’re imagining any
one of the city’s icon-

80% of south Mum-
bai’s prime A, B, C, D
wards—including
Cuffe Parade, Colaba,
Nariman Point,
Churchgate and

water by 2050.
While this is terrible
news for the country’s
commercial capital,
experts say that if
Mumbai goes down, its
impact will be felt on
the rest of Maharash-
tra, too.
The average annual
sea level increase, re-
corded at 1.9mm in 1971-
2006 has now nearly
doubled to 3.7mm (2006-
2018), according to the
Intergover nmental
Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC)’s 6th As-
sessment Report (AR6)
released in 2021.
This, in addition to
high sea surface tem-
peratures, extreme
rainfall events, rapid
urbanization could trig-
ger heat waves and
droughts in eastern
Maharashtra. Chan-
drapur has already re-
corded temperatures of
up to 48C last year.

unseasonal rains losses
in 35 districts since

not available.
The maximum ill-ef-
fects are due to extreme
rains/floods (39%), un-

droughts/hailstorms
(12%) affecting almost
all districts, and
drought occurrences
shot up from 11% (1970)
to 17% (1990), and to
79% till 2020, taking a
huge toll on the state.
Sea-level damages in
the city are expected to

almost triple by 2070,

casts that the costs only
to Mumbai at a stagger-

Sindhudurg district in
Maharashtra.
The bird is in good
health and it would be
released in the desert
area of Rajasthan or

said officials.
Local Range Forest

said, “A farmer at

an exotic-looking bird
with a ring on its leg on
Thursday evening and
alerted forest officials.
We went there and took
it in our custody
.”
The bird is currently
being kept in a facility
at Kankavali in the dis-
trict and is in fine
health, he added.
Sujit Narawade, As-
sistant Director and Co-

tutes in the UAE breed
these birds in captivity
and release them in
large numbers as part
of conservation efforts.
“The houbara bus-

our band which provid-
ed information about
its origin. When we
contacted the National
Avian Resource Centre
in Abu Dhabi, they con-
firmed that the bird was
from a flock released by
them,” he said.
They also advised
that it should be re-
leased in the desert re-

WHO’S TO BLAME?
REMEDIES
z IPCC AR6 has pointed the finger at the upcom-
ing Coastal Road Project (CRP), rising sea-levels
and flood damage, among other things.
z The prime culprits for the greenhouse gas emis-
sions in Maharashtra are: energy and power sector
(48%), industries (31%), transportation (14%),
domestic fuel (3%), agriculture (2%) and other
causes (2%), Dr Prakash said.
To adapt to cyclones coupled with sea-level going
up, storm surges, stormy weather and soaring sea
surface temperatures, Mumbai and other coastal
megacities would need a mix of strengthening
green infrastructure—urban greening, biodiversity
protection, improving the city’s mangroves and
terrestrial green cover—and blue infrastructure—
protecting and enriching waterbodies, cascading
lake systems, river, streams in the city.

Modiji’s in- spiring thoughts, encourageme nt and out-of-the-bo x examples in practical life remain a guiding light for him. What are Navratri? It is Modiji who showed the world the grandeur and splen- dour of Navratri. In one simple sentence Modiji explained what Navratri are when he described them as “the longest running song and dance festival of the world.” It is my observa- tion that Modiji forms an in- stant bond with people who harbor love for erudition and writing. His magnetic perso- na attracts such people to him and there is a natural connect between Modiji and men of letters. Modiji initiated the Vibrant Gujarat cam- paign when he was the Chief Minister and I can recollect vividly, he intro- duced the con- cept of “Five Shaktis”. He spoke about Jan Shakti, R a k s h a Shakti and for the cam- paign he in- vited a few se- lect writers to his bungalow. I was quite taken aback when I found my name amongst those who had been chosen by Modiji for this endeavor. I reached his residence and met him and Ad- vaniji, who too was present there. Much to my surprise, Modiji knew all about me. I mean, I would have been sur- prised if it was someone from the Information Department who was aware of my work and had recommended me to Modiji. But it was Modiji knew all about me. He re- ferred to the books I had au- thored, the last article I had written, and spoke about my passion for collecting books. My library is the greatest wealth I own and I was completely floored when Modiji mentioned my library to me. It was indeed a pleasant feeling to have my work acknowledged by someone none other than the CM. One sentence spoken by Modiji made me his mureed. I was teaching Marketing Manage- ment at that time and when Modiji brought up the brilliant idea of marketing Navratri to the world as the “World’s longest run- ning song and dance festival”, I was stumped. He said that we can google, at that time the internet too was in its nascent stages, and know all about the carnivals in Brazil and Ire- land but they run on for only two or three days. But think of the Indian Navratri – we celebrate this auspicious festival for 9 days and still the world knows very little about it. Navratri are nothing without Garba and are a celebration of life. We cannot think of Navratri without the raas and dance. All Gujaratis understand what Navratri are all about, but how to make the world aware of this rich and wonder- ful Indian carnival? It took only one sen- tence for Modiji to brand Navratri in such a powerful way that brought the Indian 9-day carnival so much fame! When Vibrant Gujarat campaign came to Gujarat, I was invited to speak at the event at Mahatma Mandir. Modiji deliv- ered a powerful speech as usual at the event. In a personal conversation, Modiji said “We should let people read whatever they wish to. It is not important where people begin reading from. It is not of consequence whether people cultivate a habit of reading by reading Swami Vive- kanand or our own Manubhai Pancholi, who goes by the pen name Darshak - no, that is not the question.” To further elu- cidate this point, Modiji cited the example of a heavily loaded truck that is taking a turn. It must move slowly, steadily and take a nicely, calculated turn. If the truck rushes on, it is bound to overturn. Thus young children should not be forced to read particular writers or books. They must be allowed to explore the world of books and reading and grow at their indi- vidual pace. Now, this is how a perfect teacher thinks and Modiji definitely is one! Modiji, at one point, showed me how to think about branding and now he showed me how to act like a teacher. During the Vibrant Gujarat Campaign, we do not limit ourselves to inviting Indian lumi- naries; we go ahead and showcase our culture and heritage to the world by invit- ing dignitaries from other countries. We invite nations such as Israel, Korea and Japan. We do not compete with other In- dian states. As CM, Modiji would say, “We’ve got a global campaign!” So his vi- sion and appeal at that time too was uni- versal and all-inclusive. I vividly recollect the Aug 15 celebra- tions for which I had been invited. I was carrying a copy of my latest book Life @ Kite but when I went ahead and presented it to Modiji, his first question to me was “Have you presented copy of your book to the Governor?” Now, let me tell you, Modiji was the inspiration behind the concept of the book. He had told me that I must project big and come up with qual- ity work - be it my books, my words, my campaign! So when I went up to present the book to him, he asked me if I had one more copy and took the book to the Governor himself. He said “Meet Jay Vasadeva, the much loved youth writer from Gujarat who will be honoured today in the event. Here’s a copy of his latest book for you!” Well, my father, out of much happiness and excitement, had moved a little to- wards the front row. The guard stopped him and my face was turned the other way where I could not see what was hap- pening. It was Modiji who noticed my father and immediately sent for someone to escort him to the front row, from where he could watch the proceedings. And then, Modiji did not just present the roll of honour to me, but honoured my father at the event as well. Thus, it is my good fortune that I have known Modiji’s thoughts, his vision and experienced his greatness closely . TO BE CONTINUED ... One of the popular monuments in Aurang- abad, the tomb receives heavy tourist footfall. The monument, which resembles Agra’s Taj Mahal, was built for Dilras Banu Begum, the first wife of Emperor Aurangzeb, near the Kham river. She was given the ti- tle of “Rabia-ud-Durra- ni” posthumously . “The key mausoleum of Rabia-ud-Durrani, which is also known as the Taj of the Deccan, will sport a new look in the new year,” a senior ASI official said. How- ever, daily commuters are finding it to be an expensive mode of transportation. A water taxi service started this year on Feb- ruary 17 covering three routes, all starting at Belapur. The one-way fare to the Mumbai Do- mestic Cruise Terminal (DCT) is Rs200, while the round-trip fare to Elephanta Caves is Rs750. The third route to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Transport (JNPT) in Navi Mumbai costs Rs800 for a round trip. Most of the residents of Navi Mumbai say that they will not be us- ing the service often since travelling in a wa- ter taxi is not a pocket- friendly option. According to them, although it’s a stress- free experience when compared to local trains, one has to hire cab/rickshaw for last mile connectivity, which ends up taking the same time. So it does not check both the boxes of affordability and saving time. Another drawback of the water taxis is their fixed timings and doesn’t suit those who require flexible timings. Thewatertaxiservice fromDCTtoMandwa,in Raigad district, was started from November 01 and was operating during morning, after- noon and in the evening. Due to less footfall, how- ever, only two round trips have been running since November 10. According to some daily commuters, al- though the water taxi is built at par with in- ternational standards and promises safety along with comfort, there is already a jetty connecting Gateway to Mandwa, which is a more affordable option and takes almost the same time. On October 14, the department announced that they will begin pe- nalizing motorists and co-passengers who did not wear seatbelts when travelling within city limits. The order was to be implemented from No- vember 01 onwards. However, according to the sources the joint commissioner of traffic police, has told the staff to go easy on motorists and fine only those who aren’t wearing seatbelts despite having them in their cars. Cab drivers have also been given till November-end to install seat belts. However, the taxi un- ion has requested three months to comply with the orders. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Mumbai, Rajvardhan Sinha, on Saturday, is- sued orders to discon- tinue the action till next week. “During the first 10 days, we have made citi- zens aware about the seat belts. Now, the ac- tion on passengers not wearing it will start from Tuesday, Novem- ber 15,” said a senior traffic official. Modiji’s in- spiring thoughts, encouragement and out-of-the-box examples in practical life remain a guiding light for him. TO BE CONTINUED... Ever since he broke ties with the BJP and formed an alliance with the Rashtriya Ja- nata Dal and formed a new government in Bihar, he has been trying to forge a role in national poli- tics. For this, he visited Delhi twice in the past and met o p p o s i - t i o n leaders. He is also in touch with socialist leaders from across the country, with whom he did politics in the eighties and nineties. Despite this, he has not yet received open sup- port from any Sama- jwadi Party. Meanwhile, Badrud- din Ajmal, leader and MP of Assam’s All In- dia United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has an- nounced to accept Nit- ish as a leader. Ajmal has said that if Nitish Kumar leads the oppo- sition alliance, he (Aj- mal) would be ready to join it. Keep in mind that Ajmal’s party has been in coalition with the Congress in Assam. But right now both the parties are doing differ- ent politics. With Ajmal siding with Nitish, the Janata Dal-U can get some advantage in the politics of the North- east. The JDU has been influential in the north- eastern states of Ma- nipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. There are elections in two of these states next year. If Nitish’s party repeats the previous performance, then JDU will come closer to be- coming a national par- ty . However, it is not yet clear whether Nitish will benefit from Aj- mal’s support in the rest of the country or some parties will dis- tance himself from him due to the compulsion of Hindutva politics. Will all parties accept Nitish as nat’l leader? Inflation now at a manageable level: Puri New Delhi (PTI): The in- flation is still high com- pared to the past, but it has come down to a ‘managea- ble level’, Pidilite Indus- tries Managing Director Bharat Puri has said. He also expects better margins in the second half of this fiscal. The current quarter will have some lag due to the carry forward of some of the high-priced inventory, but the fourth quarter would witness better mar- gins, Puri said. He is optimistic about India and the home im- provement sector, and Pi- dilite is ready for the next phase of growth with its ongoing capex pro- gramme. Puri expects the rural markets to bounce back with positive volume growth, helped by a good monsoon in next 6 months. According to Puri, it will take a little bit of time but will come back. The demand is most impacted in rural and semi-urban India. “As inflation moder- ates and more money comes into the hands of the consumer because of the good monsoon, we do think that over the next six months, hopefully, demand should improve from there also,” Puri told PTI. On Pidilite Industries, he said right now, the big- gest concern over the last 12-18 months was unprec- edented inflation in the input cost. The cost of some princi- pal raw materials such as vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) went up from USD 1,000 per tonne to an all- time high of USD 2,500 in the first half of this fiscal, Puri noted. However, “the good news is we can see change hap- pening” as prices of some of the raw materials are softening. The current price of VAM is down to $1,200 to 1,400/tonne. “You will see some im- pact of this in Q3 but we would be carrying lots of inventories... We will actu- ally have a larger impact in Q4 when low-priced VAM is consumed,” he said. Ac- cording to Puri, the second half would be “much bet- ter” than H1 in terms of margins perspective. While this is terrible news for the country’s commercial capital, experts say that if Mumbai goes down, its impact will be felt on the rest of Maharash- tra, too. The average annual sea level increase, re- corded at 1.9mm in 1971- 2006 has now nearly doubled to 3.7mm (2006- 2018), according to the Intergover nmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s 6th As- sessment Report (AR6) released in 2021. This, in addition to high sea surface tem- peratures, extreme rainfall events, rapid urbanization could trig- ger heat waves and droughts in eastern Maharashtra.
