Today’s leading associations could easily be mistaken for multi-million dollar corporations. Organizations that actively focus on efficiency and scalable processes show greater growth and member retention than those that are using outdated routines, systems, and tools. So how do you know what practices need revisiting, and how do you inspire change?

Fab Care and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Pieter van der HijdenPieter van der Hijden
Fab17 panel: "Working Group FabCare "; Jimbaran Hub, Bali, Indonesia, October 18th, 2022
The UN SDGs are a globally accepted reference framework for socio-economic issues including health and care, they set common goals for all countries for the year 2030 and they are provided with indicators and a system of monitoring to track progress.
We indicate the role health and care play within the SDGs and which fablabs have SDG profiles that show they are interested in this or want to contribute.
Based on current data on the state of “care” within various countries, we can see where the existing fablabs could have the most impact with regard to care. And which themes are preferable to tackle.
A Mind Shift in Mind Mapping; Pieter van der Hijden; Sofos Consultancy, Amste...Pieter van der Hijden
Mindmapping via a “hand tool” is great. With data becoming more and more important it is time to automate it. We developed a simple command language and interpreter (Corel/Mindmanager Macro) to do so.
For more than 20 years mindmapping has been my personal productivity booster. It helps to organize my thoughts, to play on different fields, to plan, to develop and to write. With data becoming more and more important, it is time for a next round.
Spending time with mindmapping software as part of a creative process, planning or writing is a pleasure. But spending time to visualize information is becoming more and more a load. It certainly is possible, but it takes often too much time and energy. As an example, look at the Figure 1. It is very simple in structure; it has a central topic, 13 main topics (picture only) and an additional main topic with some statistics.
Figure 1 - Simple mindmap, nevertheless a lot of work
In this example the creative part of the process to produce the map is rather limited. Maybe you need two minutes to set-up the main idea. But be honest, how many minutes will it take to produce the complete map? and even worse: this map is about UN Sustainable Development Goal #09. There are 17 such goals, so producing such a map for each of these goals will cost you 17 times that amount of time. All this time you can not spend to creative and more engaging processes!
Mindmapping software is like a Swiss Army Knife, a fantastic tool in all kinds of situations. However, this tool needs the hands of a human all the time. So there is an upper limit to the fun you can have with it. In complex applications (eg a map with 100 nodes, decorated with images, markers, hyperlinks etc.), using the tool is too laborious. In series production (eg a series of 17 maps), the repetition becomes boring.
We have to distinguish creative work from creating graphics. The latter should become more and more data driven and automated.

I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. Good morning. My name is Pieter van der Hijden. I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Most of the time, I am working in developing countries, especially in Suriname. In the Fab Lab community, I have been active for a couple of years in setting-up and running the International Fab Lab Association. Now, I am back on the floor and setting up a Fab Lab in Suriname.
In my three minutes time, I want to address three issues.Where on earth is Paramaribo Suriname? What makes Fab Lab Paramaribo special? What can we do together?
A few days ago, Beno Juarez from FabLat presented a map of South America. The small grey spot in the upper right corner is an area covered by three countries, one of them is Suriname.Suriname belongs to South America; it is also oriented at the Caribbean. Paramaribo is its capital.
Suriname is a country of about 400 x 400 kms. About 90% of its surface is covered with tropical rainforest, full of minerals (gold), petroleum etc. The country has half a million inhabitants, most of them live in het coastal area, especially in the capital city of Paramaribo.
In my update 2012, I mentioned three Fab Lab initiatives in Suriname. 1. A commercial initiative to set-up a creative campus including a Fab Lab. 2. A government interest in setting-up an innovation center. 3. My small informal mini Fab Lab to practice and keep the idea life. The first one has been suspended, the second one has been executed. The Cabinet of the Vice President of the Republic of Suriname materialized its initiative and established the Fab Lab Paramaribo.
Here you see an overview of the machines we have got so far. The Fab Lab Paramaribo wants to be a Fab Lab like all others. There are, however, also some differences. They have to do with the context in which the Fab Lab operates, our systems view and the actual situation (scorecard).
Special for Suriname is that it is still a developing country. The economy is growing for about ten years on a row and the country is even classified as a mid income country now. Nevertheless, especially in the interior, there are villages without electricity, without schools, teachers and doctors.Special is also that the Fab Lab is an explicit instrument of government policy and has to fulfill the corresponding expectations.Further, the Fab Lab is part of the government organization and located in the government building.
Fab Lab Paramaribo applies a systems dynamics view to people and knowledge. Regarding its visitors, the Fab Lab offers them the usual functions like introducing, empowering and incubating. However we explicitly are connecting them into a flow. We try to attract, say, 100 visitors to have a tour or seminar, to "convert" 10 of them into regular users to tinker and learn and to "convert" 1 of these 10 into an inventor / entrepreneur. Our systems dynamics view also relates to knowledge management. The Fab Lab practices the regular way of recording user experiences as Fab Moments. However, we want to embed that into a knowledge management flow of acquiring, processing, archiving and disseminating knowledge.
Our actual scorecard of vision, material base, expertise and services offered, illustrates that we made real progress so far. Building up internal expertise has the highest priority now.
Fab Lab Paramaribo offers the international community a plethora of interesting challenges in all domains of science, technology and innovation, often directly related with the social economic development of the country. Lines to the government are short. And of course, all our experiences and brainware are accessible for the Fab Lab community as well.
We welcome incoming Fab nomads and would like to find some online helpdesk to get support. We will ask support for organizing bootcamps and certainly want to participate in the 2014 Fab Academy. And, thank you Beno, for placing Suriname on the FabLat map now .
To conclude: We welcome you to SwitiSranan. You all know now where on earth it is, what makes us special and how we can cooperate in the near future. And of course, I hope that next year, people from Suriname will attend the Fab10 international conference in Barcelona and give their annual update themselves.Thank you very much!
