CHRISTIANS ARE CALLED. Every man and woman who has accepted Jesus Christ as savior has been called by God.Moses – was called BY GOD at the burning bushQueen Esther – was called BY GOD “for such a time as this”Paul – was called BY GOD on the Damascus RoadGod has called us out of a life of sin and selfishness, and He has called us to a new life – following His example. 1 Peter 1:14-16 (ESV) 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Corinthians 1:9 (NIV) 9 God, who has called youinto fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. And that calling should matter. That’s why Paul compelled the church in Galatians 1:6-7 (ESV) 6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. ~ He equips those He calls.
(Luke 9:1)How many of us realize we have no power in and of ourselves? How many of us realize we have no authority in and of ourselves? Wedding – “and now, but the authority vested in me as a minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ…”You and I need his power. You and I need hisauthority. That’s why I like this next point.
CHRISTIANS ARE AUTHORIZEDJesusgave the Twelve two assignments on the mission to which He sent them. They were to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. They were able to carry out that mission because Jesus gave them power (dynamin, “spiritual ability”) and authority(“the right to exercise the power”). The Bible Knowledge Commentary.God is OMNIOPOTENT, and when you have Jesus Christ at work in your life, that power is at work in you, too. Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV) 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.And since ALL authority has been given to Him, He has the right to authorize those he calls into His mission.
Ephesians 6:12 (KJV) 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:13 (KJV) 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
We’ve been CALLED. We’ve been AUTHORIZED. Now what?***CHRISTIANS ARE LAUNCHED. As we read verse 2, get in your head the idea of Kennedy Space Station. The launch pad has been prepared. It’s go time.Look at verse 2
(Luke 9:2)This word “sent” in the Greek is /au-po-st’ell-o/; APOSTLE. One who is SENT. Sent to do what?Proclaim - to herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth (the gospel) :- preach (-er), proclaim, publish. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.Heal – wholeness; healthThat’s why I like the idea that Christians are LAUNCHED. I think of NASA. NASA doesn’t send up the space shuttle just for a joy ride. There is a MISSION TO CARRY OUT. And our mission is to PROCLAIM THE KINGDOM OF GOD and to HEAL.
4. CHRISTIANS ARE LIMITED.
(Luke 9:3) The account in Mark 6 records Jesus saying to take a Staff. Why were the Twelve not to take supplies or money with them? BREVITY OF THE MISSION. The mission was not to be long—they came back to report to Jesus (v. 10). THIS WOULD BE A GOOD CHANCE TO SEE HOW THE PEOPLE RESPOND TO JESUS’ CLAIM TO BE THE MESSIAHIf they were to take a staff (as Mark records) the staff was a sign of authority. Moses’ staff was used to show that he was called by God – he was God’s messenger. * The Jews have a tradition that the staff of Moses was passed down – to Aaron to Joshua all the way to David. And it wasn’t until the fall of Jerusalem that the staff was lost. If they were NOT to take the staff (as Luke records),They were to trust God. They were rely on God. no staff – to protect from attacks and falls?nor bag – for what you collect along the way? The “bag” would have been used for begging. (Bible Background Commentary)nor bread – for tomorrow’s meal? nor money – for tomorrow’s expenses?and do not have two tunics – to pretend you’re somethingBut, probably, no more is designed than simply to state that they must not wait to make any provision for the journey, but go off just as they were, leaving the provision necessary in the present case to the care of Divine Providence. Adam Clarke's Commentary. How many times does the planning get in the way of the DOING?
They are limited in what to Pack, where to Park, and what to Put Up With.(Read Luke 9:4-5)JFB: They were to live frugally, reside in one location, and avoid being identified with certain less reputable wandering preachers. (Douglas, J.D. and Philip W. Comfort, 1990)This was because of the brevity of their mission and also because people’s reactions to them would indicate whether or not the nation was accepting Jesus’ claim as the Messiah. People who believed the message and the messianic healings would be glad to share with the Twelve. People who did not believe would be judged (vv. 4-5). If a town rejected the Twelve the latter were to shake the town’s dust off their feet. When Jews returned home from a Gentile country, they would shake the dust off their feet to signify their breaking ties with the Gentiles. In this way the Twelve signified that certain Jewish townspeople were like Gentiles who would not listen or believe. Jesus was thus giving the entire area opportunity to believe His message and mission. The Bible Knowledge Commentary:WITH ALL THESE DIRECTIONS, what happens next?
5. CHRISTIANS ARE TO EXECUTE THE MISSION
So those were the instructions of Christ. Let’s take a look and see what happened.(Read verse 6)Preaching - to announce good news (“evangelize”) especially the gospel :- declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel). (Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary)
Look back at the verse above. He sent them and they went. They did EXACTLY what he had called them to do.Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV) 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Jeff Carpenter. Blinking his eyes. Asked for pen and paper (difficult to read). Pointing to letters. Told the nurse “Jesus loves you.”Everyone blink. Everyone point. Everyone say “Jesus loves you.” Can you do that? The Call of Jesus Is A Call to ObedienceObeying Jesus Christ Will Always Get Attention. Look at verses 7-9.
7 Now Herod the tetrarch (the governor of a fourth part of a region - NASB) heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen. 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?”
Herod sought to see him, but did not, till as a prisoner He was sent to him by Pilate just before His death, as we learn from Lk 23:8. A Commentary: Critical, Experimental, and Practical on the Old and New Testaments. Why was Herod seeing Jesus?
CHRISTIANS ARE ON DANGEROUS GROUND.
John 12:9-11 (ESV) 9 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. Remove Lazarus, remove the reminder of what this man, Jesus, “did.” Silence the Christians, silence the name of this “Jesus.”We see the uprising in the middle east and the persecution of Christians there. Jesus Christ was killed. He is our example. It is Him that we follow. Why should we expect anything less?
