What HGVs?
There are HGVās regularly ignoring weight limit signs and driving
through South Marston. However, since Christmas the details of
only one HGV has been received by PC Marc Jackson, our local
Police Officer.
Please take a note of the number plate and company name
of any HGV you see and email PC Jackson directly on

When PC Jackson receives sufficient vehicle information he con-
tacts the Haulage Company responsible. Please donāt assume
that other people are reporting the problem. The Police cannot
act unless they know who is responsible.

Dear Friends
Have you ever seen a childās frustration and disappointment when the toy
he ās been playing with wonāt work properly or even stops altogether. The
light in his face goes out as the batteries run down and there is no power.
And what about you, have you gone to your mobile āphone and found it
dead because you forgot to plug it in?
We can do that in our lives tooānot notice that the batteries are running
down and need recharging. There is so much more stress in our busy
lives than there used to be. We see breakdown and ill health amongst our
friends and colleagues.
Taking time to connect with our inner
selves and with God is to recharge
our batteries. Taking our prayers to
God for help is to ask God for more
power to continue when the going gets
tough. To pray for others is to ask God
to give them a fresh resource of
strength and comfort.
On Ascension Day, 9th May, we cele-
brate Jesusā ascension into heaven
where he intercedes for us and at Pen-
tecost, 19th May we celebrate Godās
outpouring of his power into our lives
through giving us His Spirit. This is a
battery that lasts for eternity but we need to connect and stay connected.
On Ascension day we are launching āOasisā which will be a programme of
opportunities, differing in style and content for people to get connected to
this eternal source of power. Ascension will be a whole day of prayer split
into short times of different prayer activitiesāincluding just silence. You
will find the programme for May in the magazine.
Will you take the opportunity to recharge your batteries or pray for oth-
ers?
God Bless,
Vicky Fleming
Priest in Charge

School News
This June, South Marston C of E
Primary school turns 140 years old.
We are holding a week of celebra-
tions beginning on
Monday 17th
June
with children dressing up to repre-
sent the different decades, and cu-
mulating with a school picnic on the
Friday. The children will be produc-
ing an archive of memories which
will be on permanent display in
school. We are also planning on
holding a special 140 years church
service.
We would love to hear about any memories of the school, from
people in the community, and also any photographs that could be
lent to us.
If you would be happy to talk to some children about your memo-
ries, we would be delighted to see you in school during this week.
Please could you give us a ring on 01793 823379 or pop in to
school to make yourself known.
It would be great if we could find 8 people to represent the decades
going all the way back to the 1930s. Perhaps your parents passed
on their memories to you?
Looking forward to meeting you all.

mammals are very hard to see.
So hereās a word search where you can find 18 mammals that live in

Words can be found forwards, backwards, up, down and diagonally.

South Marston Parish Council
Meet Barry Thunder ā Councillor ,
South Marston Parish Council
When working on the initial clearance of the
conservation site, some three years ago, I was
working alongside two parish councillors who
told me about the work of the Parish Council
(PC). To be honest I had no idea what the PC
did!
But having lived in South Marston for 25 years, I
decided it was time to become more involved in
village matters, so I duly sent in my election pa-
pers and waited for more details, I fully ex-
pected to have to tell more people than my im-
mediate neighbours to vote for me! But nine peo-
ple applied for nine vacancies, so suddenly I was
a parish councillor.
After my first meeting, I found myself as the liaison for the allotments and
part of the finance working group. After 3 years this has extended to in-
clude planning applications and the village development working group.
As membership of these groups is purely voluntary, maybe I should take
more care in what I agree to become involved in.
But having said that, I have found that I enjoy the tasks (well, most of
them!!) and that learning new skills has given me a range of interests that
has become most enjoyable.
And yes, I am still working with the conservation group, who are looking
to gain more volunteers. Why not come along to a Parish Council meet-
ing and see what we do?

lished on the village website and on the village notice boards, prior to the

South Marston Enterprise (SME) Group
We are a business group that holds regular monthly meetings on the first
Thursday of the month. It is for people who live in the village and either
run or have an interest in running small businesses.
At the April meeting we had a
demonstration of Equine Reiki.
Jane, our guest, talked about her
experience in working with horses at
a sanctuary and how they benefited
from their sessions with her. She
explained what was involved and
then demonstrated it on 3 lucky
horses!
The evening was rounded off over
wine and snacks and a more social
chat over the types of training that
Jane offered for horse owners as
part of her business. We also discussed future topics we would like cov-
ered in the SME meetings.
The next meeting will be all about swapping useful contact details or nug-
gets of business sense that have really helped us in our business. If you
would like to join us please contact Hazel Andrews at

Whatās happening at
South Marston Hotel & Spaā¦.
Our Sunday carvery lunch
is still going from strength
to strength, so remember
to book early. For the real
ale drinkers I am pleased
to announce that, follow-
ing a few requests from
villagers, we have added
Our Bath Ales as a suppli-
er and weāre serving quin-
tessentially English beer
brewed in the West Coun-
try. We have a choice of premium amber ales and a distinc-
tive dark bitter. Come al,ong and try them, then give us your
feedback. As you know all of your comments are gratefully
received.
Senior Citizens Lunches have again been well supported
last month and we of course want to continue with its
success. So remember, every Thursday from 12.00 noon
-2.00pm, a two course lunch is served for only Ā£4.99 per
person.
Just a reminder that Fatherās Day is fast approaching and
that we are now taking bookings for Fatherās Day carvery
lunch which will be served from 12.30pm-4.00pm priced at
Ā£17.95 per person for a three courses and a special gift for
Fatherās Dayā¦.

Our next village coffee morning will be on Monday 13th May
2013 from 10.30am- 12 noon. Coffee and biscuits are pro-
vided by the hotel and as you know donations are shared
between the Village Hall and Church Funds. This is our way
of giving back to the local community so we hope youāll join
us. Any budding cake makers in the village that want to
bring along cakes to sell at the coffee morning in additional
support will be welcome.
