2. A number line can be defined as a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals or
segments along its length. A number line can be extended infinitely in any direction and is
usually represented horizontally where 0 is the origin.

3. Absolute value is the distance of a number from zero.
The absolute value of a number is denoted by two bars “ | | “.
Distance is always positive.
Example:
Given that each interval of the number line is 1cm away from each other.
1. How far is – 5 from zero?
2. How far is 2 from zero?
3. How far is – 4 from zero?
4. How far is 4 from zero?

4. KEEP IN MIND!
o To find the absolute value of a positive number, just write the number itself.
o To find the absolute value of a negative number, just disregard the negative
sign or symbol and write the number.
o Opposite numbers have the same absolute value.
o When a negative sign is outside the absolute value symbol then the answer
will be negative.

9.  To add integers with like signs or the same signs, add their absolute values and copy the
common signs.
 To add integers with unlike signs or different signs, subtract their absolute values and copy
the sign with the greater value.
