Kanal Plus built a digital community radio service using affordable open source software and hardware. They assembled a multiplex of neighboring community stations to share a single DAB+ transmitter, replacing over 40 FM transmitters at a total cost of 20,000 euros. This provided more than double the airtime of the original FM stations. Kanal Plus sees a future where local digital radio blocks are allocated for community radio to complement existing plans, using affordable non-single frequency network transmitters.

Kingston Interactive Television (KIT) provides broadband TV and other services over ADSL networks. KIT was one of the first to offer full broadband TV service delivered over a single copper telephone line. Recent subscriber research found that the main benefit subscribers hoped to gain was greater choice of TV viewing. While two-thirds had used the interactive features, local and community content was also very popular.
How can we encourage more private broadcasters to embrace DAB?
At the EBU’s Digital Radio Summit in February, this was the question Patrick Hannon posed to the audience – “how do we get more private broadcasters to embrace the benefits and opportunities of DAB?”
The first thing to recognise is that many commercial broadcasters have already embraced digital radio - launching new services, building brands and reaching audiences that simply would not have been possible on capacity-constrained FM.
But it’s also true that some remain sceptical, believing that DAB is a platform with limited prospects (and IP holds the answers for radio’s long term future), or worrying about the perceived threat of new competition or the increased costs of dual transmission.

Internet television also grew through streaming video and sites like YouTube, though traditional TV viewing is still dominant.
Digital Radio Switchover

1) RNE currently uses several digital radio platforms like DAB, DRM, internet and is evaluating strategies to operate digital radio.
2) DAB was the first digital system adopted in Spain but saw slow growth and stagnation due to outdated technology and lack of receivers/audience. More efficient systems like DVB-H and DMB later emerged.
3) DAB+ was developed in 2007 to improve on original DAB, tripling capacity through more efficient codecs while DRM replaced analog MW and SW bands worldwide, gaining ITU endorsement. RNE already broadcasts digitally using DAB+ and DRM.

During 2015, Ofcom UK licensed and co-ordinated a trial of small scale DAB . The report concludes that the trials were generally highly successful and achieved their three objectives.

This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
