Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions The Lord’s Prayer 2nd Petition-Thy Kingdom Come Memorization Verses: Thy kingdom come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God's kingdom come? God's kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.
Matthew 6:24 Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man that sowed good seed in his field: 25but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares also among the wheat, and went away. 26But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27And the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it tares? 28And he said unto them, An enemy hath done this. And the servants say unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29But he saith, Nay; lest haply while ye gather up the tares, ye root up the wheat with them. 30Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn. 31Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: 32which indeed is less than all seeds; but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the heaven come and lodge in the branches thereof. 33Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened.
Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.    Matthew 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Thy Kingdom Come” 1/4 As we prayed in the First Petition concerning the honor and name of God that He would prevent the world from adorning its lies and wickedness with it, but cause it to be esteemed sublime and holy both in doctrine and life, so that He may be praised and magnified in us, so here we pray that His kingdom also may come. But just as the name of God is in itself holy, and we pray nevertheless that it be holy among us, so also His kingdom comes of itself, without our prayer, yet we pray nevertheless that it may come to us, that is, prevail among us and with us, so that we may be a part of those among whom His name is hallowed and His kingdom prospers. But what is the kingdom of God? Answer: Nothing else than what we learned in the Creed, that God sent His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, into the world to redeem and deliver us from the power of the devil, and to bring us to Himself, and to govern us as a King of righteousness, life and salvation against sin death, and an evil conscience, for which end He has also bestowed His Holy Ghost, who is to bring these things home to us by His holy Word, and to illumine and strengthen us in the faith by His power.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Thy Kingdom Come” 2/4 Therefore we pray here in the first place that this may become effective with us, and that His name be so praised through the holy Word of God and a Christian life that both we who have accepted it may abide and daily grow therein, and that it may gain approbation and adherence among other people and proceed with power throughout the world, that many may find entrance into the Kingdom of Grace, be made partakers of redemption, being led thereto by the Holy Ghost, in order that thus we may all together remain forever in the one kingdom now begun. For the coming of God's Kingdom to us occurs in two ways; first, here in time through the Word and faith; and secondly, in eternity forever through revelation. Now we pray for both these things, that it may come to those who are not yet in it, and, by daily increase, to us who have received the same, and hereafter in eternal life. All this is nothing else than saying: (Pray) Dear Father, we pray, give us first Thy Word, that the Gospel be preached properly throughout the world; and secondly, that it be received in faith, and work and live in us, so that through the Word and the power of the Holy Ghost Thy kingdom may prevail among us, and the kingdom of the devil be put down, that he may have no right or power over us, until at last it shall be utterly destroyed, and sin, death, and hell shall be exterminated, that we may live forever in perfect righteousness and blessedness.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Thy Kingdom Come” 3/4 From this you perceive that we pray here not for a crust of bread or a temporal, perishable good, but for an eternal inestimable treasure and everything that God Himself possesses; which is far too great for any human heart to think of desiring if He had not Himself commanded us to pray for the same. But because He is God, He also claims the honor of giving much more and more abundantly than any one can comprehend, — like an eternal, unfailing fountain, which, the more it pours forth and overflows, the more it continues to give, — and He desires nothing more earnestly of us than that we ask much and great things of Him, and again is angry if we do not ask and pray confidently. For just as when the richest and most mighty emperor would bid a poor beggar ask whatever he might desire, and were ready to give great imperial presents, and the fool would beg only for a dish of gruel, he would be rightly considered a rogue and a scoundrel who treated the command of his imperial majesty as a jest and sport, and was not worthy of coming into his presence: so also it is a great reproach and dishonor to God if we, to whom He offers and pledges so many unspeakable treasures, despise the same, or have not the confidence to receive them, but scarcely venture to pray for a piece of bread.
From Luther’s Large Cat.: “Thy Kingdom Come” 4/4 All this is the fault of the shameful unbelief which does not look to God for as much good as will satisfy the stomach, much less expects without doubt such eternal treasures of God. Therefore we must strengthen ourselves against it, and let this be our first prayer; then, indeed, we shall have all else in abundance, as Christ teaches [Matt.6, 33]: Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. For how could He allow us to suffer want and to be straitened in temporal things when He promises that which is eternal and imperishable?

Prayer Journal Using your notes from this week, spend some time writing to God, prayer journal-style. A prayer journal is page/notebook that contains your: prayer requests Bible study notes verses that apply to a situation you are going through daily confessions goals revelations Reflection ideas….. (tell Jesus what you’ve found /thought about this week): As you meditate on these verses, what jumps out at you? How are the verses you read related? Do you see a consistent theme in the verses you read? Why do you think those specific words were chosen? What is God teaching you through these verses? What are you learning about God's character and nature? What are you learning about who you are in Christ? What are you learning about what God's plan for you?
Prayer Prep Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” God’s kingdom on earth is wherever people have submitted their lives to Him and allowed Him to rule. Asking Him to send His kingdom is asking Him to bring all people to give the rulership of their lives over to Him. This is intercession. It is praying for the needs of others. Read Ezekiel 22:29-31. Explain this Scripture using the circuit illustration. What is the problem that is described here? Between what two parties is the gap? What does God want to prevent? What needs to happen for God to have what He wants? The wires were not connected either to God or to the people of the land. If someone was listening to God (was connected with Him) and prayed (flipped the switch), what would have been different for the people? Will you stand in the gap? You will change the history of an individual or a nation.
Prayer Prep Read Genesis 18:16-33. What does this passage reveal about the significance God places on a righteous person’s prayers of intercession – standing in the gap for others? Think of a situation you encountered recently that was not the way God would want it. If this situation were written up in the Bible accounts of Jesus, what would the record show that Jesus did when He encountered it? Your kingdom come means whatever happens when Jesus comes near and rules. Pray what you believe Jesus would want to do in that situation. To participate in the kingdom coming near to people, ask, “What would Jesus do here?” or “Jesus, what do you want to do here and what do you want me to do about it?” Then do it. Remember, if Jesus rules your life, then wherever you are, the kingdom of God has come near people. Read Matthew 9:35-38. Make this passage into a prayer of intercession. Ask God to help you to be a laborer and show you someone He wants to “harvest” through you.
PRAYERThy Kingdom Come. O dear Lord, God and Father, convert them and defend us… so that they with us and we with them may serve You and Your Kingdom in true faith and unfeigned love and that from Your Kingdom which has begun, we may enter into Your eternal Kingdom. LP. Kingdom Come: Discussion Quote In what spirit are we to maintain this “campaign of sabotage”? How does this look in our lives? “Christianity…does not think this is a war between independent powers… it is a civil war, a rebellion, and that we are in a part of the universe occupied by the rebel. Enemy occupied territory – that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful king has landed, you might say landed in disguise, and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage.”
The Lord’s Prayer:2nd Petition: Thy kingdom come • What is the kingdom of God? • For what do we pray in the Second Petition? • How can we be certain that the kingdom of God comes? ______________________________ SS: Thy Kingdom Come. LP. Kingdom Come: Exegesis TavoMalkuhtekha Elqetw h basileia sou God’s Kingdom (Basilia) is one that declaritively and inevitably encroaches upon the earth and onto hearts, minds and lips. Prefaces the sovreign statement “your will be done” with authority (why is His will done? He is the Basilus!) Also establishes the Gospel-centered quality of His will and decree (kindgoms=peace)
SS: Thy kingdom come What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God's kingdom come? God's kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.
LP. Kingdom Come: God’s Sovereignty A contradiction of sorts: The kingdom is now, fulfilled in your midst, and in your hearts The kingdom is not of this world, and is something we are called to pray to come. Resolution: God enters humanity in the form of a servant. His strength is perfected in weakness. His choice is absolute. He invades the earth in the manner of His choosing. The kingdom is fulfilled in Christ, and is affirmed within us until the consummation of time.
M kingdom of God What is the kingdom of God? The kingdom of God is His ruling as king over the whole universe (kingdom of power), the church on earth (kingdom of grace), and the church and angels in heaven (kingdom of glory). Ps. 103:19 The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all. (Kingdom of power) John 3:5 Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit." (Kingdom of grace)  2 Tim. 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. (Kingdom of glory) • Pray: Eternal God, Everlasting Father! You are a God and lover of peace. From You all true unity comes. We pray, graciously protect Your Christendom on earth against all its enemies, so that we may be kept in peace, and ever serve You gladly in faithful doctrine and pure conduct. Grant us grace, so that all estates and rulers of Christendom may live peacefully and harmoniously in perfect piety and godliness, so that discipline and order prevail, churches and schools are not destroyed, and the country is not devastated nor grievously oppressed. Bless the country and the cities in which Your holy Word dwells. Prosperity must dwell within their palaces! O merciful God, incline the hearts of all men to a Christian peace and concord, to which You have called us through Your Word and Gospel. Amen. (Johann Habermann, 1516-90).
T Power, Believe, Bring For what do we pray in the Second Petition? We do not pray that God's kingdom of power would come, because that is already present everywhere, but we ask God to  A. give us His Holy Spirit so that we believe His Word and lead godly lives as members of His kingdom of grace;  Mark 1:15 "The time has come," He said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"  Rom. 14:17 The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.  Col. 1:13-14 He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.  B. bring many others into His kingdom of grace;  Matt. 9:38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.  2 Thess. 3:1 Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. • Pray: Gracious and blessed God, You have taught and commanded us above all things first to seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Grant us grace, that Your holy Word may be preached in all the world in all its truth and purity. May we submit our reason to the obedience of faith and live holy lives, as is proper for the children of God, to Your pleasing. Then Your kingdom may come to use, and increase, and many people, who do not yet believe in the Word, may be won through Christian conduct. Help us, dear God, who are delivered from the power of darkness and are translated into the kingdom of Your dear Son, Jesus Christ. In Him we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sin. May we remain in His kingdom, faithfully continue in the wholesome doctrine, and live worthily as children of light in all piety and godliness. Amen. (Johann Habermann, 1516-90).
LP. Kingdom Come: God’s Mercy Imagine a King who takes up the sword and fights alongside his men against impending evil. Who feeds the sick and dying from His own treasury and nurses them back to health, who weeps over betrayals and rightly punishes those who seek to destroy from within. Christ sabotages the powerful, the wealthy, the pharisaical, the wicked Imparts new life to whom He will, and gives freely to His children (especially the poor, downtrodden, widowed, and maimed).
W Kindom of Grace and Glory For what do we pray in the Second Petition? We do not pray that God's kingdom of power would come, because that is already present everywhere, but we ask God to C. use us to extend His kingdom of grace;  Acts 4:29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable Your servants to speak Your word with great boldness.  1 Peter 2:12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.  D. hasten the coming of His kingdom of glory.  Phil. 3:20 Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Rev. 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. • Pray: O dear God, You are my Father. I can boldly ask all things of You, for You cannot withhold anything from me. My heart assures me that what I ask shall be granted. I now pray that Your name and Word shall be hallowed by us. At the same time I pray that You will destroy the kingdom of the devil with all its wickedness and all that is contrary to Your Word and will. Amen. (Luther).
LP. Kingdom Come: Trinity and Kingdom The Father: Christ declares that the Kingdom belongs to the Father. He reigns as the head, by whom all things eminate The Son: The threefold office All is inherited by Christ who bridges the moat for us with the drawbridge of the cross. The Spirit: Who declares to us our citizenship in God’s kingdom, which starts here and continues to eternity.
LP. Kingdom Come: Trinity and Kingdom All three are declared in our baptism, The vehicle by which God enters our human experience with Water and word, The spirit connects us to Christ’s baptism which finishes at the empty tomb He brings us into a heavenly kingdom that has REAL senses, starts now, and is a source of never ending comfort.
ThMeans of Grace How can we be certain that the kingdom of God comes?  The Lord guarantees that His means of grace establish and sustain His kingdom.  Is. 55:11 My word ... will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.  Bible narrative: The parable of the growing seed (Mark 4:26-29). • Pray: O Lord, our God, how blessed are we! Not only have You given us Your Word, which offers and imparts to us all the fruits of the redemption that we may know Your grace and in firm confidence receive it. Through the world, the Law, our heart, and our conscience condemn us, what do we care? Your Word declares us free of all guilt. O keep us in such faith unto our end and grant that all the members of our congregation may appreciate the great treasure which they possess. Help them and us to triumph over all attacks of the devil, the world, and our flesh and finally to depart this life in peace and to be received into Your eternal kingdom. Hear us for the sake of our risen and victorious Champion, Jesus Christ. Amen. (C.F.W. Walther, 1811-1887).
Sing it! Happiness is to know the Savior,Living a life within His favor,Having a change in my behavior,Happiness is the Lord. Happiness is a new creation,Jesus and me in close relation,Having a part in His salvation,Happiness is the Lord. Real joy is mine, no matter if teardrops start;I've found the secret, it's Jesus in my heart! Happiness is to be forgiven,Living a life that's worth the living,Taking a trip that leads to Heaven,Happiness is the Lord,Happiness is the Lord,Happiness is the Lord!

11.09.02 the lord's prayer 2nd petition-thy kingdom come

Amen. (Luther).

  • 26. LP. • 27.
