Course Description and Objectives: This course will challenge 10th grade art students on formal,
technical and conceptual levels. Students will continue to develop their technical skills in 2D and 3D
media including focused exploration in drawing, painting and printmaking. Students will further examine
the elements of art and principles of design and apply their knowledge to their artwork. Students will
learn to manage class time and become self-aware of their individual process and habits in the studio.
Students will learn and practice using a comprehensive visual vocabulary demonstrating this in class
discussions and self-evaluations. Students will engage in discussions of their work as well as art historical
works so they can become effective communicators who participate in meaningful dialogue about art.
Students will benefit from visiting artists and visual art-focused outings, including Oakland and SF
galleries and museums.

Grades will be assessed as follows:
Class Participation = 15%
● working on task in a focused manner and using class-time well
● being engaged and involved in group projects, discussions and critiques
● using materials and equipment responsibly, including set-up and cleanup
● Be On Time For Class
● Please note that you must have your art materials to be prepared!
In – Class Assignments: = 45% In-class assignments will be graded on the following criteria:
● following instructions and fulfilling requirements
● craftsmanship and presentation
● effort *strength of concept and visual impact
● In-class assignments should be executed at school, with the instructor -not at home
Sketchbook/Homework = 25% Students will work in their sketchbook for at least 45 minutes each day
outside of school. This daily exercise is meant to build drawing skills as well as generate ideas.
Sketchbooks are graded daily.
“Quizzes”, Critiques and Self-Assessments: = 15% Quizzes might cover visual art vocabulary,
techniques learned in class. Art history or possibly a follow-up to a visiting artist. Most often the quizzes
will have a visual component or demonstration of skill. Critiques and self-assessments may be oral or in
writing.
Course / Studio Policies
All OSA policies as outlined in the Student Handbook will be respected.
Attendance in class is critical and expected. Unexcused absences, tardiness and leaving class early will
affect the final grade.
Participation in class discussion and critiques is essential. It is very important that an artist can have a
meaningful dialogue about their own work and the artwork of others.
Daily Homework and Sketchbook practice are necessary for passing this course. Your sketchbook will
be checked weekly.
Handle all supplies and materials with respect. All students are responsible for setting up and cleaning
up materials and tools every day. Waste and misuse will not be tolerated. Keeping our classroom clean
and organized will factor into your grade.
Electronic Devices are not allowed in class unless the teacher gives special permission
Tardy Policy: Be in class and ready before the class bell rings. Multiple tardies will result in losing
participation points. These points can only be made up in lunch detention.
Questionable subject matter will be addressed and resolved. Art that students present or submit as part
of their course work should be aligned with the values of inclusion (as laid out in the OSA Statement on
Diversity). We reserve the right to disallow the presentation of work that does not meet these values.
Late Work Policy: Turning in work late will affect your grade Late work (homework and in-class
assignments): will be accepted for one week after the due date. The grade will be lowered.
Shows and Eligibility Eligibility is based on a 2.5 Cumulative GPA requirementfor showing
work/performances. In addition, students will be held to an attendance standard. Poor
behavior/performance will result in a meeting with VA Chair, parent/guardian, and student, which could
lead to ineligibility. Ineligible students may not be able to attend field trips as well.
