Teachers in India use eclectic approaches to teaching English, drawing on methods like narratives, chalk and talk, and following textbook units. However, they feel constrained by large class sizes, limited resources, and an emphasis on frequent testing. While teachers recognize the value of interactive and communicative activities, tests push them to prioritize content coverage over developing skills. The study suggests separating methods from activities and lessening test-focused washback to give teachers more freedom in their approaches.
