This document describes a study searching for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses below 107 solar masses by looking for signs of low-level nuclear activity in nearby galaxies that are not known to be active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The study uses Chandra X-ray Observatory data to select for X-ray emission, a signature of AGNs, focusing on late-type spiral and dwarf galaxies most likely to host low-mass SMBHs. Preliminary results applying this technique to six nearby spiral galaxies find nuclear X-ray sources in all six, with NGC 3169 and NGC 4102 likely confirmed as AGNs and NGC 3184 and NGC 5457 possibly hosting AGNs.

This study compares the structural evolution of galaxies from observations in the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) to cosmological simulations with and without radiative pressure (RP) feedback. Axis ratio distributions are obtained from simulated galaxies of different stellar masses, sizes, and redshifts and compared to observed distributions from CANDELS. Preliminary results show axis ratios decrease towards higher redshifts for simulated galaxies viewed face-on, similarly to CANDELS observations, and simulations with RP feedback generally have lower axis ratios than without at z > 1.5. More analysis is needed to determine how RP feedback affects galaxy structure and morphology over cosmic time.

Absolute dating by the use of radioactive decay provides a natural “clock” that starts when certain types of rocks are formed. Radioactive decay is the spontaneous nuclear disintegration of isotopes of certain chemical elements into their stable daughter isotopes. As disintegration occurs, energy is released and can be detected by a Geiger counter or similar device.
THE DECAY CONSTANT
The rate of for isotopes is stated in terms of half-life: the amount of time it takes for a given amount of a radioactive parent isotope to be converted to its non-radioactive daughter. By comparing the amount of a radioactive parent isotope in a particular rock with its daughter product, the geologist can determine how much time has elapsed since the rock formed.
The half-life gives an impression of the rate of change of a parent into its daughter, but to utilize the decay characteristics in a calculation of age, the decay rate () must be determined.

THE DECAY EQUATION
Although the decay rate is unique for every parent-daughter pair, every radioactive decay follows the same decay curve known as the exponential decay curve. It is expressed by the following equation:

P = number of parent atoms measured in the rock today
P0 = number of parent atoms at time t (when the rock formed)
exp = natural log of e (don’t worry about this for now)
= decay constant for the parent atom
The problem with this approach is that it is not possible to determine P0 without first knowing t. But, we can determine the number of daughter atoms present today. And if we assume that every daughter atom in the rock was created by the decay of a parent atom then the sum of the current number of parent atoms and daughter atoms will represent the number of parent atoms at time t, or P0 = P + D. The equation below reflects this relationship:

But we have to other problems. First, we cannot assume that every daughter in the rock was created by the decay of a parent in the rock. It is very possible that some daughter isotopes were incorporated in the rock during formation and were not formed by decay after the rock formed. Second, it is very difficult to measure the actual number of daughter (and parent) atoms directly. It is much easier to measure the ratio of the parent isotope to an isotope of the daughter element but one NOT created through radioactive decay of the parent.

However, coordinate singularities arise in the numerical computation of the string so motion beyond ρ = 0 becomes computationally inac- cessible. Physically the string should still move beyond this point in empty AdS3 spacetime. This singularity is an artefact because coordinate systems in general are not physical. The behaviour of the string in the vicinity of a black hole background in AdS3 spacetime is well defined a fair bit away from the horizon. It moves in the same manner as in the AdS3 spacetime in the absence of the background. Un- fortunately, when the string approaches the horizon part of the string overshoots into the horizon. The solutions become divergent and the numerical solution fails before we can observe anything interesting.

The parabolic shapes brilliantly demonstrate the relative time that it takes for the ball to travel throughout the various points of the image. At the very top of the parabola, the tennis ball images appear very close together, therefore indicating that the ball moved at a slower velocity. Conversely, near the bottom of the parabolas, the distances between the images of the ball grow larger, therefore indicating that the ball moved more space per time interval as it descended toward the racket.
