HTTP Adaptive Streaming of video content is becoming an integral part of the Internet and accounts for the majority of today’s traffic. Although Internet bandwidth is constantly increasing, video compression technology plays an important role and the major challenge is to select and set up multiple video codecs, each with hundreds of transcoding parameters. Additionally, the transcoding speed depends directly on the selected transcoding parameters and the infrastructure used. Predicting transcoding time for multiple transcoding parameters with different codecs and processing units is a challenging task, as it depends on many factors. This paper provides a novel and considerably fast method for transcoding time prediction using video content classification and neural network prediction. Our artificial neural network (ANN) model predicts the transcoding times of video segments for state-of-the-art video codecs based on transcoding parameters and content complexity. We evaluated our method for two video codecs/implementations (AVC/x264 and HEVC/x265) as part of large-scale HTTP Adaptive Streaming services. The ANN model of our method is able to predict the transcoding time by minimizing the mean absolute error (MAE) to 1.37 and 2.67 for x264 and x265 codecs, respectively. CADLAD: Device-aware Bitrate Ladder Construction for HTTP Adaptive Streaming
Considering network conditions, video content, and viewer device type/screen resolution to construct a bitrate ladder is necessary to deliver the best Quality of Experience (QoE). A large-screen device like a TV needs a high bitrate with high resolution to provide good visual quality, whereas a small one like a phone requires a low bitrate with low resolution. In addition, encoding high-quality levels at the server side while the network is unable to deliver them causes unnecessary cost for the content provider. Recently, the Common Media Client Data (CMCD) standard has been proposed, which defines the data that is collected at the client and sent to the server with its HTTP requests. This data is useful in log analysis, quality of service/experience monitoring and delivery improvements.
In this paper, we introduce a CMCD-Aware per-Device bitrate LADder construction (CADLAD) that leverages CMCD to address the above issues. CADLAD comprises components at both client and server sides. The client calculates the top bitrate (tb) — a CMCD parameter to indicate the highest bitrate that can be rendered at the client — and sends it to the server together with its device type and screen resolution. The server decides on a suitable bitrate ladder, whose maximum bitrate and resolution are based on CMCD parameters, to the client device with the purpose of providing maximum QoE while minimizing delivered data. CADLAD has two versions to work in Video on
Demand (VoD) and live streaming scenarios. Our CADLAD is client agnostic; hence, it can work with any players and ABR algorithms at the client. The experimental results show that CADLAD is able to increase the QoE by 2.6x while saving 71% of delivered data, compared to an existing bitrate ladder of an available video dataset. We implement our idea within CAdViSE — an open-source testbed for reproducibility.
LwTE-Live: Light-weight Transcoding at the Edge for Live Streaming
Live video streaming is widely embraced in video services, and its applications have attracted much attention in recent years. The increased number of users demanding high quality (e.g., 4K resolution) live videos increase the bandwidth utilization in the backhaul network. To decrease bandwidth utilization in HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS), in on-the-fly transcoding approaches, only the highest bitrate representation is delivered to the edge, and other representations are generated by transcoding at the edge. However, this approach is inefficient due to the high transcoding cost. In this paper, we propose a light-weight transcoding at the edge method for live applications, LwTE-Live, to decrease the band-width utilization and the overall live streaming cost. During the encoding processes at the origin server, the optimal encoding decisions are saved as metadata, and the metadata replaces the corresponding representation in the bitrate ladder. The significantly reduced size of the metadata compared to its corresponding representation decreases the bandwidth utilization. The extracted metadata is then utilized at the edge to decrease the transcoding time. We formulate the problem as a Mixed-Binary Linear Programming (MBLP) model to optimize the live streaming cost, including the bandwidth and computation costs. We compare the proposed model with state-of-the-art approaches and the experimental results show that our proposed method saves the cost and backhaul bandwidth utilization up to 34% and 45%, respectively.
Communication Performance Over A Gigabit Ethernet Network
A present computing imposes heavy demands on the optical communication network. Gigabit Ethernet technology can provide the required bandwidth to meet these demands. However, it has also involve the communication Impediment to progress from network media to TCP(Transfer control protocol) processing. In this paper, present an overview of Gigabit per second Ethernet technology and study the end-to-end Gigabit Ethernet communication bandwidth and retrieval time. Performance graphs are collected using NetPipe in this clearly show the performance characteristics of TCP/IP over Gigabit Ethernet. These indicate the impact of a number of factors such as processor speeds, network adaptors, versions of the Linux Kernel or opnet softwar and device drivers, and TCP/IP(Internet protocol) tuning on the performance of Gigabit Ethernet between two Pentium II/350 PCs. Among the important conclusions are the marked superiority of the 2.1.121 and later development kernels and 2.2.x production kernels of Linux or opnet softwar used and that the ability to increase the MTU(maximum transmission unit) Further than the Ethernet standard of 1500 could significantly enhance the throughput reachable.
LinuxCon2009: 10Gbit/s Bi-Directional Routing on standard hardware running Linux
This talk my 2009 updates on the progress of doing 10Gbit/s routing on standard hardware running Linux. The results are good, BUT to achieve these results, a lot of tuning is required of hardware queues, MSI interrupts and SMP affinity, together with some (now) submitted patches. I\'ll explain the concept of network hardware queues and why interrupt and SMP tuning is essential. I\'ll present results from different hardware both 10GbE netcards and CPUs (current CPUs under test is AMD phenom and Core i7). Many future challenges still exists, especially in the area of more easy tuning. A high knowledge level about the Linux kernel is required to follow all the details.

ZEN AND THE ART OF SOFTWARE DOCUMENTATION
(Translated from the P'-u-t'ung hua dialect by W.C.Carlson)
Editor's Note: The following are excerpts from the only known
treatise on Zen Software Documentation. Called "H'ring-chu-tsu", which
literally translates to "Ink of Several Insignificant Matters", this
treatise was written in 12th Century Japan by the scholarly monk
E'm-ie-T'. That it discusses Software documentation -- predating the
advent of software by 850 years -- is but another of the mysteries of
those who walk the true path.)
This article should be read twice.
On Preparing to Write of Software
To prepare for the writing of Software, the writer must first
become one with it, sometimes two. Software is untasteable, opalescent,
transparent; the user sees not the software, so the writer must see
through it. Spend long, quiet mornings in meditation. Do not sharpen
the mind, but rather blunt it by doing Zen crosswords.
(Ed. note: Zen crosswords are done by consulting only the "Down" clues;
and always in the mind, never on paper.)
The mind should be rooted but flexible, as a long stemmed flower
faces the Sun yet bends with the Wind. Think not of compound adjectives
because they tend to wire the mind in two directions. Rather, consider
the snowflake, which radiates in beauty in any and all directions.
Partake of strong drink.
Do not study the Software; let it study you. Allow the Software
admission to your mind, but keep in the cheap seats. Let it flow around
you at its own pace. Do not disturb or dismay it, but keep it from your
private parts because it tends to coalesce there.
When the Software is with you, you will know it. It will lead your
mind where it should be, and prepare you for the narcolepsy that is cert
ain to follow. You will know when the Software is with you, and so will
others. You will smile with an inner smile. Typewriters will frighten
you. You will fall down a lot.
The first exercise in writing Software documentation is the Haiku.
Haiku are 17 syllable poem forms in which many ideas of a single concept
are reduced -- nay, distilled -- into a short, impressionistic poem.
For example, the Haiku for preparing to write of Software goes:
Emptiness on paper;
Fleeting thought.
Red Sox play at Fenway's
Green Park.
By concentrating on the Softwares form and function in a concise,
subliminal, truly meaningless Haiku verse, you have transcended the
Software, and you can then write the true manual.
The following Haiku is from a Zen manual on Data Transmission:
How swiftly whirls the disk;
Data leaps to the floating head
And is known.
And this is on Hardware Maintenance:
The smell of hot P.C. card,
Blank screen, no bell,
New parts will be needed.
And another Haiku, this one on Debugging:
All the lights are frozen;

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

[10 marks] Ernest, a CST student at BCIT is designing an autonomous drone for delivery of uncompressed 4K video (4096 x 2160 pixels, 10 bits for each of red, green and blue components, 30fps, 60 mins), from the BCIT Burnaby campus to the Downtown campus. Assume that the distance between the two campuses is 15km. Determine the minimum speed the drone must travel at such that the drone, loaded with a single SATA II 2 TB hard disk drive, can deliver the video faster than gigabit Ethernet (GbE). Recall that latency is made of four components: propagation time, transmission time, queuing time and processing delay. Assume that both the queuing time and processing delay are negligible and that there is no data transmission time at the receiver. The propagation speed of electromagnetic signals in guided media is 2108m/s.
