Genesis 1

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and
the lesser light to rule the night and the star.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon
the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light
from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving
creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the
open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moved,
which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every
winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the
waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his
kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind:
and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after
their kind, and every thing that crawled upon the earth after his kind:
and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and
let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of
the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that crawled upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created
he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and
multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion
over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every
living thing that moved upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed,
which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is
the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to
every thing that crawled upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have
given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very
good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

What is my role:
To gather and process information
that are already available from the
word of God and from science
and bring it to it’s (logical)
conclusion.

Young earth creationism
is a belief that the universe, the earth and life
on earth were created in a literal
6 days / 24 hour day
In this presentation we don’t hold that view.
Old earth creationism
is the belief that God used billions of years to
create – it is totally biblical as long as the
order things were created is according to
Genesis 1 - this model line up better with
modern science. This is our clear view.

The biblical creation story
and

has more in common than most
people realise…

are in fact very close

Let’s have some “fun”:
Let’s take a look at
what the great reformer
Martin Luther
wrote in his book –
Commentary to Genesis 1
in the year of the Lord 1545

• On the forth day the heavens were adored by
the creation of the sun, moon and the stars
• The first great movable object; the sun,
performs his revolutions from east to west
• … a firmament in which the sun with all the
planets have their motion round the earth

• Astronomers say that the stars are lighted as if
it were by the sun – so they could shine.
• If you could compere the sun to the stars and
collect all the stars into “one body”, you would
have a body mass perhaps greater than the
sun

John Calvin also wrote a
commentary on Genesis in 1563.
Among many things he writes:
“For astronomy is not only pleasure
but also very useful to be known:
it can not be denied that this art
unfolds the admirable
wisdom of God”

Let us start
“before the beginning”

Before creation – before time -
before there was anything (time)
God was…(God the father, Son and Holy Spirit)

“The Perichoresis”
God’s circle dance – for eternity before creation..

“We speak of God's secret wisdom, a
wisdom that has been hidden and that
God destined for our glory before time
began.” (1 Corinthians 2:7)
“This grace was given us in Christ Jesus
before the beginning of time” (2 Timothy 1:9)
“The hope of eternal life, which God...
promised before the beginning of time”
(Titus 1:2)

God “was” before time – he was and is “light”…

Genesis is totally clear on the order of creation.
The order is organised in days – 1th day to the 6th day.
Strong’s dictionary (h3117) tells us
another word for “day” is a division of time,
a period of time or a time period.
“For God 1000 years is like a day – and a day like 1000 years”
(2 Peter 3:8) - It is obvious: God has all the time in the world –
He does not hurry anything!
The biblical “order of creation” and “old earth” theology,
lines up remarkable well with modern science.
The theology of a “literal 6 day creation”
or “young earth” is therefore *#@$?!! (sorry…)

1. Day
(the first time period)
Approx. 9.2 billion years

In the beginning God created the heaven (KJV)
(or the heavens - NAS and NIV)
and the earth Gen 1:1

“In the beginning God created
the heavens…”
Since the word is in plural,
there must be more than one heaven
Heavens (plural) is the Hebrew word: Shamayim.
Strong’s dictionary (h8064) gives this word
three meanings:
1. Heaven (the abode of the God)
2. Heaven – the universe (the abode of the stars)
3. Heaven – (the sky above us)

God first created
1) his own abode – his own “home”
(unless he has always been there) and then
2) the universe – the empty space – the home
of the (soon to come) stars.
1 Kings 8:49 - Heaven is God’s dwelling place
2 Cron. 20:6 – are you not God in heaven
Matt 6:9 – Our Father in heaven
Mark 16:9 – Jesus was taken up into heaven
The way I see it:

Heaven was first created – the “city of light”
(where God himself is the light)

The City of God – The New Jerusalem

As a part of creating heaven – his
abode, God created the angels
“The angels were worshipping God
as he was creating the world:
They shouted for joy” (Job. 38:4-7)
As we can see from this text:
The angels existed before the earth

“In the beginning God created
the Earth…”
Earth is the Hebrew word: Erets
Strong’s dictionary (h776) gives the word several meanings:
1. Earth – the planet (where man lives)
2. Space (the universe)
And Genesis 1:1 continues,

And the earth (meaning the universe) was
formless and void… Gen 1:2

…and the Spirit of God was hovering over the universe

And God said: Let there be light… Gen 1:3

God’s creation of light – a big “explosion” took place - at first a bright hot light
that lasted for just a few thousands years. Then a period of darkness set in (the dark ages)
before new light – stars – started forming. This whole process is included in
God’s command: Let there be light

“Let there be light” – and colours

As you can see - God is keeping an eye on things…

Somewhere in there - in the center – is heaven

How stars are made:
(a quick lesson in astrophysics – by NASA)
• Stars are born within the clouds of space dust
• Turbulent winds give rise to mass gatherings
• This mass eventually collapses and the material at
the center heats up
• This becomes the core of a star
• A star the size of our Sun takes 50 million years to
mature into adulthood
• It will “live” for +/- 10 billion years before it burns
out

• Our Sun is approx. half way into its lifespan
• Stars comes in different sizes
• Dwarfs are only 10% of the size of the Sun
• Hyper giant stars can be 100 times larger then the
Sun
• Their heat (energy) is up to 100 times more then
the energy of the dwarfs
• They burn faster and “only” last a few million
years

into a star (a 50 million year process)

The first stars (lights) were created approx. 400 mill . years after “the beginning”
when God said: let there be “light” (13.7 bill ion years ago)

The milky-way (our galaxy) alone has more then 300 billion “lights”
of different sizes. Some bigger galaxies have 100 trillion stars.
And there could be as many as 300 billion galaxies.
Total: 1.000.000.000.000.000.000.000 “lights” or
100 million - trillion stars
“God is big…”

2. Day
(the second time period)

Genesis 1:6-8 (NKJV)
Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it
divide the waters from the waters.” God divided the waters which were under
the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.
And God called the firmament heaven (sky)

It looks like the “planet Earth” was created in the second time period (Day 2) according to
Genesis. Science claim it was made later – at the same time as the Sun and the moon.

Important: The Sun (our light star) was not yet created.
The earth is still in darkness just illuminated with a little light from the other stars.
(until the forth day – Gen 1:16)

What Moses describes in Genesis 1:6-8 could possibly look something
like this – but one thing we know: this “sky” or earth atmosphere
made it possible for “life on earth”

• Some will say the second creation day was not as
impressive as the first
• God creates the sky.
• The sky forms a barrier between water upon the
surface and the moisture in the air.
• At this point earth would have an atmosphere.
• This creative work occurs in one day.
• But it was an important creation day – it prepared
the earth for life – unlike the other planets
• I think we can assume that this “second time period”
was shorter then the first

3. Day
(the third time period)

And God said: Let the water under the sky be
gathered to one place… Gen 1:9

…and let dry ground appear… Gen 1:9

Then God said: Let the land produce vegetation Gen 1:11

Notice: The vegetation – mostly evergreens –
was created before the sun
(and must have grown from the light of the stars)

4. Day
(the forth time period)

Then God said: Let there be lights (sun and moon)
in the sky to separate the day from night (Gen 1:14)

The Moon and the Sun are both about the same age –
4.517 million and 4.760 million years old.
Science say the Earth is slightly older then the moon – 4.540 million

Gen 1:16 (Amp. + literal translation)
And God made two great lights, the
greater light (the sun) to rule the
day and the smaller light (the moon)
-literal translation: to rule the night
and the star, and God set them
firmament of the heaven…

Most bible translations say:
“God made two great lights, the greater light
to rule the day, and the lesser light to govern
the night. He made the stars also.”
(Or he also made the stars.)

The words “he made” does not exist in the
Hebrew text
The translators make it look like the stars was
made in verse 16 – on the forth day.
But the first stars (the lights) was made years
earlier in verse 3 – on day one.

Genesis 1:16 could therefor read:
“God made two great lights – the larger
(the Sun) to govern the day, and the lessor
(the moon) to govern the night and the star
(the Sun)”
The moon governs the night and the sun by
reflecting it’s light to earth
In the same way as: the Sun governs the day
by shining it’s light directly on the earth

Notice: “He made” is in brackets – which means added text by the translators.
They also say stars in plural which is incorrect.
Hakkowkabim (h3556 ) Kokab, meaning: a star (singular)
The star – singular – is the Sun.

The sun is “only” 4.5 billion years old – about 1/3 as old as the universe.
It is expected to burn out in another 4.5 billion years.
In other words: It is half way through it’s life span.
(the universe has a beginning but no end – it will go on forever…)

The scientists say the moon also is 4.5 bill years old – jut like the sun.
The Bible says they were made “on the same day” . How accurate is that…

5. Day
(the fifth time period)

Then God said: Let the waters teem with swarms
of living creatures Gen 1:20

This one is slightly younger…

“…So God created every winged bird after it’s kind” Gen 1:21

Continental drifting
has always been taking place –
and will always take place…
At the same time something else is also happening:

6. Day
(the sixth time period)

Then God said: Let the land produce living creatures Gen 1:24

These “living creatures” as the Bible calls them, ruled the earth for 180 million years
(that is 30.000 times longer then the time period from Adam until today)

How long is
the dinosaur period
180 million years

“mans” 6000 years?

42.500 years x 42.500 years = 180.000.000 years

78 years x 78 years = 6000 years

When Did the Dinosaurs Live?
Dinosaurs lived throughout the Mesozoic Era, which began 245 million years ago and
lasted for 180 million years. It is sometimes called the Age of the Reptiles. The era is
divided into three periods.
245 to 208 million years ago
During the Triassic period, all land on Earth existed as one enormous mass. It was called
Pangaea. The supercontinent slowly began to break up during the Triassic Period.
Some reptiles, frogs, turtles and crocodiles existed earlier, but dinosaurs didn’t appear
until late in the Triassic period.
The period marked the rise of small, lightly built dinosaurs.
Most of the plants that existed were evergreens.
The period ended with a mass extinction that wiped out most animals and reptiles. An
entire order of plants or animals dies out in a mass extinction. The dinosaurs that
survived flourished in the next period, the Jurassic.

JURASSIC period
The supercontinent continued to break apart
Dinosaurs ruled the land and flourished during the period
Herbivores and carnivores increased in size; some of the largest dinosaurs
emerged during the Jurassic period
Birdlike dinosaurs first appeared
Flowering plants began to appear late in the period
The Jurassic period also ended with an extinction, but it was not as extensive
as the one in the Triassic period. Only a few types of dinosaurs died out

Pangaea ( the earth’s land mass) continued to separate into smaller continents
A wide variety of dinosaurs roamed the land
Birds flourished and spread all over the globe
Flowering plants developed
Mammals flourished
Dinosaurs became extinct by the end of the period. The extinction, the second largest of
all time, marked the end of the Age of Reptiles and the beginning of the Age of
Mammals.
Tyrannosaurus rex (“tyrant lizard”; found in North America and Asia): T. rex, king of the
dinosaurs, dominated the period.

Thy got breathing problems… and died!

There are more then 170 large meteor crater sights in the world
The largest created is 66 mill years old

Then God said: Let us make livestock
and wild animals Gen 1:24

Then God said: Let us make man in our image Gen 1:26

7. Day
(the seventh time period)

Moses tells us in Gen. 2:1-2 “the heavens and earth
were completed – and God rested on the seventh day”

Up till now the Bible and science have
matched up “quite good”.
Now it seems they take a little different
direction.
The Bible (Moses) tells us that the creation is
completed. (Gen. 2:1-2)
Science believe the creation of planets and
stars and the expansion of the universe
goes on…

But wait a minute – also consider this:
John 5:16-17 (NKJV)
For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and
sought to kill Him,[a] because He had done these
things on the Sabbath.
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been
working until now, and I have been working”
Aha: God has been working all along…

And not only has God been creation “until
now”: How about this one:
Isaiah 65:17-18 (NKJV)
“For behold, I create new heavens and a
new earth; And the former shall not be
remembered or come to mind”

I believe we can sum it up like this:
“God created the heavens and the earth – he
has not stopped working – and he creates a
new heaven and a new earth – this is an
everlasting creation process”
(This new heaven is what science calls the
always expanding universe, and the new
earth is the constant reshaping of the earth
through continental drift)
(it is not that the earth is replaced but
reshaped)

Suddenly God and science is
“in tune” again…

Let’s look a little closer at the earth
history and the scientific predictions
for the future of the earth and the
universe…

“Let there be light” - 1 billion years – the first stars and planets
Timeline from “the beginning” until today – 13.7 billion years
2 billion years
3 billion years
13 billion years
4 billion years

First day - 7 billion years
Second day - 8 billion years – The earth

Think about it – think really hard:
If the continents have been moving across the face of the earth:
Have they now (suddenly) stopped moving?

Earth quakes make the continents move
… a few inches or feet at the time
Where will they end up?

If we assume that plant and animal life will continue on earth…
What will “life on earth” look like 100 mill years from now?

“The history of the earth”

Supercontinents are “short-lived” unions.
Stirred by hot currents below, these great continental collages are
destined to break up and once again go their separate ways.
Earth's supercontinent boom-and-bust cycles last 400-500 million years
(give or take…)
PS. Can you see “the four corners of the earth”
described in Is. 11:17, Ez. 7:2 and Rev. 7:1

The supercontinent cycle describes the quasi-
periodic aggregation and dispersal of Earth's
continental crust.
It is agreed that the Earth's crust is constantly
being reconfigured.
Continental collision makes fewer and larger
continents while rifting makes more and
smaller continents.
It is agreed that the most recent super
continent, Pangaea, formed about 300 million
years ago. But there are two different views on
the history of earlier supercontinents. The first
proposes a series of supercontinents: Vaalbara
(~3.6 to ~2.8 billion years ago); Ur (~3 billion
years ago); Kenorland (~2.7 to ~2.1 billion
years ago); Columbia (~1.8 to ~1.5 billion years
ago); Rodinia (~1.25 billion to ~750 million
years ago); and Pannotia (~600 million years
ago), whose dispersal produced the fragments
that ultimately collided to form Pangaea.[1][2]

made!

Greenhouse and icehouse Earth
There are two types of global earth climates: icehouse and greenhouse.
Icehouse is characterized by frequent continental glaciations and severe desert
environments. Greenhouse is characterized by warm climates.
Both reflect the supercontinent cycle.
We are now in a little greenhouse phase of an icehouse world.

Yes – we need to look after God’s creation – and keep it nice and clean!
