Benefits of Operating an On-Premises InfrastructureRebekah Rodriguez
Despite the rapid evolution and growth of public cloud usage, enterprises are finding value in on-premises IT infrastructure. As a result, some organizations are moving their workloads back, partially or entirely, to their own data centers. In fact, according to a survey conducted by IDC, over ½ of the IT spent on servers and storage is still driven by on-prem deployments, and over 70% of those surveyed said they plan to repatriate workloads back from public cloud to an On-Prem Infrastructure.

Diagnose and Cure Application Performance Issues Before Your Users NoticeMatt Zanderigo
Riverbed Technology experts discuss revolutionary network monitoring and optimization capabilities in a single integrated platform that make it possible - for the first time - to fully analyze the wealth of data that passes over the wire in real time and actively optimize the delivery of applications anywhere and everywhere.
You’ll see real customer examples and:
How you can gain control, improve customer satisfaction and proactively manage your increasingly complex network environment with a new level of application visibility, and active optimization
Why a holistic view of the application delivery path is critical to making informed decisions about accelerating and prioritizing the performance of your business-critical applications
The importance of a single integrated platform to diagnose and cure application performance issues before customers notice
Today we’re going to talk about application performance:
how application performance is a critical enabler of business performance,
how application performance is changing with the evolution of IT – changing across every variable, from where applications are hosted … to how they’re delivered … to whom and to where they’re delivered …
And we’ll talk about how the challenges of application performance are changing, as visibility, optimization and control become more and more difficult to achieve in the age of hybrid infrastructures that span SaaS and on-premises apps as well as public and private networks.
This is Jay Haines, head of operations and integration at Shell, the #2 company on the Fortune 500 (after WalMart). Jay is speaking at our customer conference, Riverbed FORCE, in November last year. He talked about the challenges of application performance at Shell, a company with:
WAN connectivity at 1,150 sites, in over 70 countries
210 terabytes of traffic per month
155,500 Office Communicator users
57,600 mobile users
Jay said: “What we call a ‘situation’—a disruption to [IT] service—costs between $100,000 and $250,000.” In other words, an application slowdown, disconnect, or failure costs the company as much as a quarter of a million dollars because employees can’t do their jobs and perform their roles in the business as expected.
And then Jay went on to say that: “With Riverbed, we’re preventing 2 to 3 situations per week, and probably more.” That saves Shell tens of millions of dollars per year in avoided service disruptions.
Clearly, application performance equals business performance. We depend on applications for everything today, whether you’re at a local retail store or a multinational corporation.
If applications don’t work, employees can’t work. Collaboration doesn’t happen. Products don’t get shipped on time. Customers can’t be served. Transactions can’t complete. Business is lost. Application performance directly impacts business performance in every way.
App performance problems impact more than just the company internally – more than just employees.
They can impact thousands, even millions of people who depend on those services, and they can do so very publicly.
When thousands of people are delayed at airports, or when millions of stock trades can’t go through, or when an important government website doesn’t work – that generates headlines and substantial damage to a company’s brand.
In this world of pervasive applications, which are the enablers of practically every business activity and function, application performance can be a significant competitive advantage.
Companies that master the complexities to deliver superior application performance have huge advantages in employee productivity, business agility, cost efficiency and customer service.
So…how can you as an enterprise achieve superior app performance today? What are the considerations?
To achieve superior app performance, you need superior app infrastructure. But infrastructure is changing dramatically as it moves to the cloud.
We’ve been hearing about the cloud for over a decade and now it’s finally crossing the chasm into the mainstream enterprise. In a recent report, the Harvard Business Review found that 70% of respondents have adopted some form of cloud computing.
71% said that they expect cloud to reduce complexity in the business.
And 74% say cloud has provided competitive advantage.
Source: https://hbr.org/resources/pdfs/tools/Verizon_Report_June2014.pdf
This mass evolution from on-premises computing to the cloud has led to a transitional state for most companies which we call the hybrid enterprise.
If 70% of companies have adopted some form of cloud, that means that 30% haven’t – they’ve kept their infrastructure on-premises.
And some organizations, including the U.S. Federal Government, have opted to go 100% cloud.
But most organizations are somewhere in the middle. They’re putting some infrastructure into the cloud, but keeping business-critical apps and data in their own private data centers, and delivering them over a mix of private and public networks to balance cost and speed. This is the basic definition of a “hybrid enterprise” and this is where most organizations find themselves today.
Apps are going hybrid: 2014 was the first year that the majority of workloads – 51% -- ran in the cloud.
Networks are going hybrid: In 2014, more than half of companies – 55% -- used an Internet connection in place of a traditional WAN link. That’s up from 30% just two years before, in 2012.
And devices are also going hybrid: In 2014, 84% of companies let employees use personal devices in the office.
The days when we ran workloads in our own data centers … and delivered them over our own networks … to company-owned PCs are gone, and they’re gone forever.
Hybrid is the new norm.
While cloud and hybrid models provide many benefits, there’s no question that delivering applications with great performance is becoming more and more challenging across the complexity and scale of the hybrid enterprise environment.
Today, users are everywhere. In fact, the vast majority (62%) of employees work in multiple locations, according to Forrester.
Data is everywhere, too, created and consumed using a growing range of devices. Today, the majority of companies (52%) say over 50% of their corporate data is outside the data center. And the average data center supports 55 branch offices, all generating business data that is at risk of loss because it is not centralized, secure, and well-managed.
As a result of all this, the majority of companies (51%) say that application complexity is their primary obstacle to mastering application performance.
So … how can you eliminate application complexity as one of the primary challenges to business performance?
You need 3 main capabilities to address the complexity of the hybrid enterprise…
1st, you need end-to-end visibility. Which means metrics that matter for optimal efficiency.
Visibility is the ability both to see and to know. The ability to see all applications and data moving across your enterprise, regardless if on-premises or in the cloud. And the ability to know what it all means, through analytics that give business unit leaders across the company insight into metrics that matter for optimal efficiency, productivity, and growth.
The quote you see here is from David Giambruno, CIO at Tribune Media. Visibility is about the ability to solve application problems anywhere in the enterprise, and that’s huge – but visibility goes far beyond that too, with the ability create a frictionless enterprise that save money and resources.” That’s optimal efficiency.
The 2nd capability you need to address the complexities of the hybrid enterprise is optimization. Which means superior performance for maximum productivity.
Riverbed is known for optimization and has been since our founding 13 years ago. We launched the WAN Optimization market with the launch of SteelHead in 2004, which continues to lead the market with a majority share of customers.
But IT has evolved tremendously, and Riverbed has evolved with it. It’s not enough just to optimize apps, you also have to optimize networks and the end-user experience.
At Riverbed, we’ve expanded WAN optimization to the cloud, SaaS apps, and multi-network delivery with new levels of visibility, optimization, and control. And we intend to continue to drive exciting innovations into this market to provide new and expanded value for our customers for many years to come.
The quote here is from Edward Wagoner, CIO at JLL, a global leader in commercial real estate. As you can see, optimization today is not just about cheating the speed of light by eliminating latency and reducing bandwidth needs. Optimization today is the ability to control application delivery across different networks and respond to, and ultimately proactively eliminate, any impediments to superior application performance.
The 3rd capability you need to address the complexities of the hybrid enterprise is control. This means simplified orchestration for true agility.
For many companies that are taking steps to the cloud, what keeps the CIO up at night is the loss of control. Control is complicated by multiple service providers, both internal and external, with multiple SLAs. It’s complicated by having data in many places – data centers, branches, and in the cloud. It’s complicated by the need to deliver some workloads over the Internet for cost savings and some over private networks for speed.
Control is the ability to simplify and manage all this complexity so that your infrastructure can support the speed of your business.
The quote here is from Tim Waver, CIO at Del Monte Foods Inc.
You can see from the quote that Riverbed is an enabler for the cloud, providing both visibility and control; you can’t control what you can’t see. But if you can see everything that’s going on with your applications, across your networks, and in the eyes of your end users, then you can control the delivery of apps. But not only that – you can also control the evolution of your infrastructure to an increasingly efficient model, and you can control costs as they evolve from hardware investments to service agreements.
You need 3 main capabilities to address the complexity of the hybrid enterprise:
Visibility
Optimization
Control
These 3 capabilities are what Riverbed brings to the table.
This is Peter Coffee, VP for Strategic Research at Salesforce. An excerpt from a longer quote. You can see the entire video on YouTube, but I’ll just read you a bit of the longer quote here.
“At Salesforce, we know what we do,” Peter says. “We do exactly one thing. We deliver the leverage, the economic benefits, and the agility of a pure SaaS model to companies of every size.”
Salesforce controls their own apps and services, but they don’t control the entire environment. So Peter continues: “But,” he says, “as soon as you get to companies of medium or large size, they also want to merge that value effectively into existing hybrid portfolios of IT assets. So, SteelHead and SteelCentral are vital tools for them to have the confidence that they’re going to do that on their terms, and that they’re the ones who will always be driving their IT roadmap.”
And then Peter when on to talk about what he’s hearing from Riverbed customers: “When I hear the things that are said by Riverbed customers about things like SteelHead SaaS, what I’m hearing from them is, ‘Now I know that I’m not putting my destiny completely in your hands at Salesforce. I know that I’m also retaining the power to see, understand, optimize, control, and assure the kind of performance that’s going to make me a leader in my industry.’ It’s a very important part of the mixture that’s out there in the SaaS marketplace.”
Riverbed is an important part of the SaaS world, as Salesforce says, and I’ll bet many of you didn’t know that.
As I noted earlier, Riverbed has been known for optimization since our first SteelHead shipped in 2004, but we’ve come a long way since then. So let me just give you a quick snapshot of the company today.
Today, the new Riverbed has over 26,000 customers, including 98% of the Forbes Global 100 and 91% of the Forbes Global 500

And our solutions are ground-breaking, world-class, award-winning, market-leading, long-term, rock-solid answers to some of the major challenges that face the hybrid enterprise.
We’ve talked about the importance of application performance in driving business performance, and the challenges of ensuring superior performance is an increasingly hybrid world of IT.
We’ve talked about the 3 key capabilities you need to address those challenges.
And we’ve introduced the new Riverbed with a quick snapshot.
Now let’s dive deeper into the challenges of the hybrid enterprise, and the solutions we offer.
Based on the evolving challenges and changing needs of our customers, we reshaped our vision, then developed a strategy to execute on it:
Our vision is to enable hybrid enterprises to transform application performance into a competitive advantage by maximizing employee productivity and leveraging IT to create new forms of operational agility.
Our strategy is to offer the most complete platform to ensure applications perform as expected, data is always available when needed, and performance issues can be proactively detected and resolved before impacting business performance.
Our platform is a set of capabilities – solutions for the specific challenges of the hybrid enterprise. Let’s start with the branch.
Why is the branch in need of a solution? What’s the challenge?
Every data center serves, on average, 55 branches. Only 13% of companies are fully consolidated in the data center – and only 8% in the branch. This increases companies’ risk exposure due to outages, obsolescence, and data loss. It also increases costs: organizations spend over $4 billion every year on remote office IT.
The right solution would ensure that branches enjoy peak performance while all data stays securely in a well-managed data center. The right solution would ensure zero IT in the branch – no servers, no storage, and no backup required at the branch. Branches can be instantly provisioned, without needing IT talent at the branch. And they can be instantly recovered.
The Riverbed Application Performance Platform includes SteelFusion, the only zero IT solution for the branch of the future.
Hybrid networks are another challenge the hybrid enterprise must manage.
Many organizations want to continue to use private networks for mission-critical traffic, while using the lower-cost Internet for high-volume traffic like video conferencing or data backups, and in some cases making local Internet access available for cloud services and web apps.
To do this you need application identification via deep packet inspection (DPI) so that the system knows what the application is, out of thousands potentially. You need intelligent Path Selection to choose the right network. And you need both of those combined with integrated quality of service (QoS) so that you make network selections based on matching service levels with business requirements.
This way the infrastructure can understand usage and performance down to the specific application type and dynamically reroute application flows in case of performance degradation.
SteelHead combines these capabilities to ensure the right path and service level for each application with no impact to end-user experience.
Then there’s the challenge of visibility and optimization across the hybrid enterprise. That means across all apps, all networks, and all users.
To do this, you need a truly end-to-end operational view of application performance, for any type of application, from the end-user, through the network and infrastructure over which it runs, and deep into the actual application components and code.
You need comprehensive performance monitoring across applications, networks, and end-user experiences.
You need Deep Packet Inspection for intelligent path selection.
You need deep-dive analytics for instant troubleshooting anywhere on the globe.
And you need to be able to resolve any performance issue before end users notice.
SteelHead and SteelCentral together deliver application intelligence via DPI….seeing exactly what users are doing.
Customers can right-click and deep-dive into troubleshooting using SteelCentral’s unique combination of application, network, and end-user monitoring and management.
And use SteelHead’s extraordinary QoS/Path Selection capabilities to take action and address performance issues.
Then there’s the challenge of managing the transition to a hybrid model … so you can realize the benefits of the cloud faster while also keeping your mission-critical infrastructure running.
How can you ensure great end-user experience for cloud-based apps when you’re not running the infrastructure?
How can you improve performance of SaaS apps when you’re no longer in control of where they’re hosted or how they’re delivered?
How can you manage service providers if you can’t independently monitor delivery on their SLAs?
And, overall, how can you integrate your private data centers and MPLS networks with cloud services and public networks for the competitive advantages of greater capabilities for lower costs and less time?
We’ve talked about the capabilities the Riverbed Application Performance Platform provides. Now let’s look at the specific solutions:
SteelCentral, at the top of the platform, is the industry-leading performance management solution combining user experience, application & network performance management for true end-to-end visibility.
Riverbed is Gartner’s best-ranked vendor in performance management – “Leader” in the Magic Quadrant for Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics (2015) and “Visionary” in the Magic Quadrant for Application Performance Monitoring (2014).
SteelHead, at the lower left, is the industry-leading WAN optimization solution. It guarantees application service levels across hybrid cloud architectures.
SteelHead has been named a “Leader” in Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization for eight consecutive years; won InfoWorld Technology of the Year eight years in a row; and leads WAN Op market with more than 50% market share.
SteelFusion, lower right, is the industry’s first storage optimization solution for the branch that delivers local performance, data centralization, instant recovery & lower TCO.
SteelFusion has won InfoWorld Technology of the Year honors two years straight.
SteelScript, the middle layer, is a set of open APIs and developer tools that enable you to customize and automate the platform.
We have a wide range of open APIs for our solutions, including RESTful APIs, that allow software developers to write applications that communicate with other systems and services. These are the foundation for Riverbed’s developer tools, including SteelScript for Python and the SteelScript Application Framework, which give customers and partners the ability to extend the value of Riverbed infrastructure with customization,
I explained earlier that our strategy is to offer the most complete platform to ensure applications perform as expected, data is always available when needed, and performance issues can be proactively detected and resolved before impacting business performance.
