1 Corinthians 11
Bible’s Toughest Chapter?
• Many Bible teachers consider this the toughest
chapter in the Bible;
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:4 Every man who has
something on his head while praying or
prophesying disgraces his head.
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:7 For a man ought not
to have his head covered…
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:14 …if a man has long
hair, it is a dishonor to him…
1 Corinthians 11
Let’s read1 Corinthians 11:1-22
1 Corinthians 11:3
Headship (roles) Not Ontology (nature of being)
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:3 But I want you to
understand that Christ is the head of every man,
and the man is the head of a woman, and God is
the head of Christ.
• Trinity= equal Divine nature, yet different roles,
Humans= equal nature, different roles
• NAU Galatians 3:27 …if you belong to Christ… 28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither
slave nor free man, there is neither male nor
female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
1 Corinthians 11:7, Why do religious
male Jews cover their heads?
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:7 For a man ought not
to have his head covered, since he is the image
and glory of God; but the woman is the glory
of man.
1 Corinthians 11:7, Head coverings, Why do
religious male Jews cover their heads?
• Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg wrote, “Religious
male Jews cover their heads with platter-
shaped cap (yarmalkah), usually made of cloth
to distinguish between them and their Creator.
• The custom of wearing such “yarmalka” (also
known as “kippah”) is itself not rooted in the
Hebrew Bible as is the case with tzitzit – tassels,
hanging from the corners of male clothes (Num.
15:38).
1 Corinthians 11:7, Head coverings, Why do
religious male Jews cover their heads?
• The covering of the head in Biblical times was something
mandatory only for the highpriest. The idea of all males
covering their heads was an invention of emerging
rabbinical Judaism (around 3rd century CE) that sought to
reconstitute Israel under their leadership after the
destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, symbolically projecting
priestly duties on every male Jew.
• But what does “yarmalkah” mean in Hebrew? The answer
is nothing. The word is in Judeo-German language called
Yiddish. It is compound word made up of two Aramaic
words – Yar (fear) – Malkah (the King)…”
1 Corinthians 11:7, Tassels, Shawl
9
1 Corinthians 11:7, Tassels, Shawl
• NAU Matthew 23:5 "But they do all their deeds
to be noticed by men; for they broaden their
phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their
garments.
• Jerusalem Photo Trivia, Rebecca Kowalsky's
photograph of a man in prayer amidst the fields
and sky, contemplating the Almighty.
• A Talit, or prayer shawl, is a garment with fringes
which is wrapped around a supplicant during
prayer, as a constant reminder to fulfill God’s
commandments. 10
1 Corinthians 11:7-9, The Bible
Knowledge Commentary
• 11:7–9. “The man, on the other hand, was not
to have his head covered because he was the
image and glory of God. Paul based this
conclusion on Genesis 1:26–27. A woman’s (a
wife’s) glory and image was derived from (1
Cor. 11:8) and complementary to (v. 9) that of
the man (her husband). Man, then, was God’s
authoritative representative who found in

• woman a divinely made ally in fulfilling this
role (Gen. 2:18–24). In this sense she as a wife
is the glory of man, her husband. If a married
woman abandoned this complementary role,
she also abandoned her glory, and for Paul an
uncovered woman’s head gave symbolic
expression to that spirit.”

1 Corinthians 11:10,
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have
a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
• NAS NKJ NET ESV NAU …a symbol of…
• GNV KJV …power on her head…
• YLT …a token of…

1 Corinthians 11:10, OT Covered Heads
Indicated Weeping And Mourning
• NAU 2 Samuel 15:30 And David went up the
ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he
went, and his head was covered and he walked
barefoot. Then all the people who were with
him each covered his head and went up
weeping as they went.
• NAU Esther 6:12 Then Mordecai returned to
the king's gate. But Haman hurried home,
mourning, with his head covered.
14
1 Corinthians 11:10, The Bible
Knowledge Commentary
• 11:10. “Paul offered a third reason (the first reason
was the divine order—God, Christ, man, woman,
vv. 3–6; the second reason was Creation, vv. 7–9)
why womanly insubordination in the church should
not exist. Angels were spectators of the church (4:9;
Eph. 3:10; 1 Tim. 5:21; cf. Ps. 103:20–21). For a
woman to exercise her freedom to participate in
the church without the head covering, the sign of
her authority (exousia, a liberating term; cf. 1 Cor.
7:37; 8:9; 9:4–6, 12, 18), would be to

• bring the wisdom of God (Eph. 3:10) into disrepute.
• Other (but less acceptable) explanations have been
suggested for the words because of the “angels”: (a)
evil angels lusted after the women in the Corinthian
congregation; (b) angels are messengers, that is,
pastors; (c) good angels learn from women; (d) good
angels are an example of subordination; (e) good
angels would be tempted by a woman’s
insubordination.”

1 Corinthians 11:14, Long Hair
• I am sure that you’ve heard about the father
who insisted his teenage son get a haircut
because the New Testament does not allow
long hair. He based it on;
• KJV Matthew 24:17 …top not come down…
• KJV Matthew 24:17 Let him which is on the
housetop not come down to take any thing
out of his house:

Looks Likepopularmechanics.com
• Nancy Peterman wrote, “This article from
Popular Mechanics is quite interesting.
Obviously we will not know what Jesus looks
like until we get to see Him Face to face, but
points out some obvious things that Western
art usually misses! Just some fun, with some
science behind it, but I know it's not
definitive.”

The Real Face Of Jesus
Advances in forensic science reveal the most famous face in
history. By Mike Fillon, Jan 23, 2015, popularmechanics.com
• “From the first time Christian children settle into Sunday school classrooms, an image of Jesus Christ is etched into their
minds. In North America he is most often depicted as being taller than his disciples, lean, with long, flowing, light brown
hair, fair skin and light-colored eyes. Familiar though this image may be, it is inherently flawed. A person with these
features and physical bearing would have looked very different from everyone else in the region where Jesus lived and
ministered. Surely the authors of the Bible would have mentioned so stark a contrast.
• On the contrary, according to the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane before the
Crucifixion, Judas Iscariot had to indicate to the soldiers whom Jesus was because they could not tell him apart from his
disciples. Further clouding the question of what Jesus looked like is the simple fact that nowhere in the New Testament
is Jesus described, nor have any drawings of him ever been uncovered.
• There is the additional problem of having neither a skeleton nor other bodily remains to probe for DNA. In the absence
of evidence, our images of Jesus have been left to the imagination of artists. The influences of the artists' cultures and
traditions can be profound, observes Carlos F. Cardoza-Orlandi, associate professor of world Christianity at Columbia
Theological Seminary in Atlanta. "While Western imagery is dominant, in other parts of the world he is often shown as
black, Arab or Hispanic." And so the fundamental question remains: What did Jesus look like?
• An answer has emerged from an exciting new field of science: forensic anthropology. Using methods similar to those
police have developed to solve crimes, British scientists, assisted by Israeli archeologists, have re-created what they
believe is the most accurate image of the most famous face in human history.
• THE BODY AS EVIDENCE
• An outgrowth of physical anthropology, forensic anthropology uses cultural and archeological data as well as the
physical and biological sciences to study different groups of people, explains A. Midori Albert, a professor who teaches
forensic anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Experts in this highly specialized field require a
working knowledge of genetics, and human growth and development. In their research they also draw from the fields of
primatology, paleoanthropology (the study of primate and human evolution) and human osteology (the study of the
skeleton). Even seemingly distant fields like nutrition, dentistry and climate adaptation play a role in this type of
investigation.

“long hair is a disgrace” popularmechanics.com
• “…It was the Bible, however, that resolved the
question of the length of Jesus's hair. While most
religious artists have put long hair on Christ, most
biblical scholars believe that it was probably short
with tight curls. This assumption, however,
contradicted what many believe to be the most
authentic depiction: the face seen in the image on
the famous—some say infamous—Shroud of Turin.
The shroud is believed by many to be the cloth in
which Jesus's body was wrapped after his death.
Although there is a difference of opinion as to

• whether the shroud is genuine, it clearly depicts a
figure with long hair. Those who criticize the shroud's
legitimacy point to 1 Corinthians, one of the many New
Testament books the apostle Paul is credited with
writing. In one chapter he mentions having seen
Jesus—then later describes long hair on a man as
disgraceful. Would Paul have written "If a man has long
hair, it is a disgrace to him" if Jesus Christ had had long
hair? For Neave and his team this settled the issue.
Jesus, as drawings from the first century depict, would
have had short hair, appropriate to men of the time.…”

Covered Heads?
• There is not one use of any word like “hat,
helmet, turban, scarf, veil, or shawl”, no
mention of anything man-made
• There is use of the words; “head
covered/uncovered, shaved, hair, long hair
(authority/independent, dishonor/glory)
• NAU Deuteronomy 22:12 "You shall make
yourself tassels on the four corners of your
garment with which you cover yourself.
• So, what is a “head covering”? 22
1 Corinthians 11:1-16, Covered Heads?
• What is a “head covered, or covering? A kippah, shawl, burka,
huge bonnet, a barrette, a ribbon, bobby pins? If important, I
think Paul would have specified.

Heads Covered With Hair
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:14 Does not even nature
itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is
a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long
hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to
her for a covering.
• NAU Romans 14:1 Now accept the one who is
weak in faith… 4 Who are you to judge the
servant of another?… 5 …Each person must be
fully convinced in his own mind… 23…whatever
is not from faith is sin.
1 Corinthians 11:15
“Long” is a relative term
• Ask a Marine drill sergeant what “long” is?
• All of us do not have long luxurious hair;
• Shelley Toren tells that, “One evening while my
daughters were taking a bath together, 4-year-
old Andrea began pouring water over her 10-
month-old sister's bald little head. Exasperated,
I asked Andrea what she was doing. Without a
moment's hesitation, she replied,
• "I'm watering Rachel's head so her hair will
grow!”
1 Cor. 11:14-15, Long Hair On Men?
• gracethrufaith.com Q. Re: What Did Jesus Look Like? …
• A. 1 Cor. 11:14-15 is a relative statement. In Paul’s time
women let their hair grow long enough to come down almost
to their waist. But men didn’t let their hair grow below their
shoulders. Today we think a man with shoulder length hair
has very long hair, but in Paul’s day it was the norm. What
was dishonoring was for a man to let his hair grow so long it
resembled a woman’s hair. This is similar to the prohibition
against women dressing like men and men dressing like
women (Deut. 22:5). It was not meant to prevent women
from wearing pants to church. Neither sex wore pants in
Biblical times. It was a prohibition against “cross dressing”,
where women dress to present themselves as men and men
dress to present themselves as women.”

Alex, was looking at a picture of himself when he
was one week old. Upon seeing his umbilical cord
still attached in the picture, he asked, "What is that
black thing on my belly button?"
• His eight-year-old sister, Maria, quickly replied,
"That's your extension cord!" 27
1 Corinthians 11:16, Feminism?
• 1 Corinthians 11:16 But if one is inclined to be
contentious, we have no other practice, nor
have the churches of God.
• The MacArthur Study Bible, Page 1700, says,
“Neither the Lord, the apostles, nor the
churches would allow female rebellion. Women
were to maintain their distinctively feminine
hairdos; and when custom dictated, they should
wear a covering.”
1 Corinthians 11:18, Divisions
• NAU 1 Corinthians 11:18 For, in the first place, when
you come together as a church, I hear that divisions

• NAU 1 Cor 1:10 …no divisions among you, but that
you be made complete in the same mind and in the
same judgment.
• NAU Jude 1:3 …contend earnestly for the faith… 19

1 Corinthians 11:7, Who is your covering?

• Who is your covering?, By Jim Allen
“…About five years ago I learned about a new
teaching circulating in our church that was
introduced with a question, "Who is your
covering?" Having no clue, I soon learned the
church leaders had announced they were adopting
the teaching on pastoral authority. The central
theme for the teaching is God guarantees
protection for believers who submit to thepastor,
which is to do as told. On the flipside of the theme,
failure to submit to the pastor results in the
removal of God's protective hand on your life. After

and was pure heresy….”
1 Corinthians 11:7, Who is your covering?
By Jim Allen, http://www.blogos.org/keepwatch/spiritual-covering.php
• Who is your covering?
• By Jim Allen
As the underground Chinese pastor once told his congregation after having visited America and her churches. "It is amazing to see what American believers can accomplish without God." [1]
This pastor's perception of American believers is profound and, as I am learning, not unique to the foreign faithful. For some of us it may be a revelation to learn how the world is looking upon American believers as less
than Christian. An American pastor once said during a European conference, "The Gospel came to the Greeks and the Greeks turned it into a philosophy…the Romans turned it into a system…Europeans turned it into a
culture…and the Americans turned it into a business." [2] Many American institutions have turned Christianity into a business, becoming major media portals to the world that televises despicable heresies (2 Peter 2:1).
Is it possible that American believers have fallen so far from the truth they are now blind to their downward plight? Have they become lukewarm believers (Revelation 3:14–21)? "The Laodiceans understood the analogy
because their city drinking water came from a spring six miles to the south over an aqueduct, and it arrived disgustingly lukewarm. It was not hot like the nearby hot springs that people bathed in, nor was it refreshingly
cold for drinking. It was lukewarm, good for nothing. In fact, it was nauseating, and that was the Lord's response to the Laodiceans—they sickened Him." [3] Have they apostatized from the faith?
Apostasy is the act of turning away from or abandoning the true gospel of Jesus Christ for another gospel. People who profess faith in Christ without possessing a solid, foundational view of the true gospel will be
vulnerable to illusory snares set by false religious leaders. One way to think about an illusory snare, and its captivating power, is the monkey snare.
In Burma, villagers hunt for monkeys by removing the contents of a coconut and filling it with fruit or peanuts much desired by the primate. The villager attaches a rope to the coconut and ties it to a tree. When a monkey
finds the coconut and reaches inside to remove the fruit, its closed fist becomes the trap. The villager made the opening big enough for the monkey to slip its hand through but not big enough for the primate to withdraw
its clenched fist. The monkey's unwillingness to let go of the content seals its fate when the villager approaches to take its life.
Today, wayward ministers are setting the same kind of illusory snare for unwary souls who give blind allegiance and devotion to a church or religious group without vetting its doctrine. To vet means to examine carefully.
About five years ago I learned about a new teaching circulating in our church that was introduced with a question, "Who is your covering?" Having no clue, I soon learned the church leaders had announced they were
adopting the teaching on pastoral authority. The central theme for the teaching is God guarantees protection for believers who submit to thepastor, which is to do as told. On the flipside of the theme, failure to submit to
the pastor results in the removal of God's protective hand on your life. After researching the teaching, I found it had no basis and was pure heresy.
Did the leaders in my former church understand they were setting a monkey trap? No, they had no clue, and when told about the deception they rejected those of us who went forward with the warning. They did not
possess a solid, foundational view of the true gospel and were vulnerable to this particular illusory snare gaining a foothold within the evangelical church.
Apparently, my former church was eager to bring the assembly of American believers under its control. "To disobey the pastor, even when the pastor is wrong, is to disobey God because the pastor is always in authority
and God the ultimate authority. In other words, the pastor stands in authority between Jesus and the body of believers, becoming the spiritual covering over his or her church. In fact, this teaching refers to lowly believers
as sheep, not too bright, often confused, and in need of a shepherd to lead them." [4]
In closing, my former church had big plans to build schools and retirement centers. They had become an institution focused on turning Christianity into a business using the name of Jesus. They needed money and a gullible
laity to finance their agenda over God's. They saw pastoral authority as one way to gain control of the flock. They left the true gospel and fell prey to the monkey trap. They had clenched their fists tightly around the lie.
They were trapped, unaware of their captor who had them now. They, like the underground Chinese pastor observed, are doing amazing things without God.
These Nicolatians are alive and well in the church. They are bold and defiant, placing themselves between you and Jesus who is our true Shepherd. 1 Timothy 2:3 says, "For there is one God and one Mediator between God
and men, the Man Christ Jesus."

1 Cor. 11:14-15 Long Hair On Men
• Q. Re: What Did Jesus Look Like? I was reading your response about what
Jesus looked like, and it reminded me of something I’d read elsewhere
about Jesus and long hair. The person cited 1 Cor. 11:14-15. “Does not
even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to
him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given
to her for a covering.” If men wore their hair long in the 1st century (as I’ve
always believed), then why would Paul say that long hair is dishonorable to
a man?
• A. 1 Cor. 11:14-15 is a relative statement. In Paul’s time women let their
hair grow long enough to come down almost to their waist. But men didn’t
let their hair grow below their shoulders. Today we think a man with
shoulder length hair has very long hair, but in Paul’s day it was the norm.
What was dishonoring was for a man to let his hair grow so long it
resembled a woman’s hair. This is similar to the prohibition against women
dressing like men and men dressing like women (Deut. 22:5). It was not
meant to prevent women from wearing pants to church. Neither sex wore
pants in Biblical times. It was a prohibition against “cross dressing”, where
women dress to present themselves as men and men dress to present
themselves as women.

1 Corinthians 11:30, Sickness Can Be Good
• Today is August 7, 2014
•
Verse of the Day -- Psalm 119:71
•
It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes.
•
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
• Sickness can be a good thing.
•
MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY
• In the fast-paced world in which we live, many times God allows us to get sick to slow us down so
we can reprioritize. Sometimes just lying there in agony gives us time to think about what is really
important—God's eternal Word.
• God is perfect in everything, including the times we get sick. It's usually not when we would have
planned it, but God always knows best.
• . . . God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called
. . . —Romans 8:28. . . Thy judgments are righteous,
and that in faithfulness Thou hast afflicted me. —Psalm 119:75
• And if we get really, really sick, we can exercise our faith through our church elders:
• Is anyone sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray. —James 5:14

Division Because Of Him
• NAU John 7:43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him.
• Pope Says the Division Between Evangelicals and Catholics Is A Work of the Devil
• "Division is the work of the 'Father of Lies,' 'the Father of Discord,' who does everything
possible to keep us divided," the Pope said in his message to a group sponsored by the
John 17 Movement. He said the devil "knows that Christians are disciples of Christ, that
they are one, that they are brothers! He doesn't care whether they are Evangelicals,
Orthodox, Lutherans or Catholics. They are Christians." Read more.
• Mike's Comment: The pope has blasphemed the Holy Spirit by attributing the work of
Christ to the work of the devil. It is the Lord Jesus who divides believers from unbelievers
by the truth of His Word (Luke 12:51-53). Born-again Christians and Catholics will always
be divided on the essentials of the Gospel, how one is born again, how one is justified,
how one is purified of sin, who can mediate between God and man, and the efficacy,
sufficiency and necessity of Jesus Christ for salvation. Pope Francis is the one who is
doing the work of the devil by rebuilding the religious tower of Babel as he seeks to unite
all Christians under the papacy. Tragically, some evangelicals are jumping on his
ecumenical bandwagon by denying the exclusivity of God's Gospel. Read more of Mike's
response in an interview with the Christian News Network.

• Francis IIROME — In a recorded video statement released on Saturday, the Roman Catholic Pontiff known as Francis
asserted that evangelicals and Catholics are one, and that it is the devil who has divided the two groups.
• “Division is the work of the ‘Father of Lies,’ ‘the Father of Discord,’ who does everything possible to keep us divided,” he
said.
• The eight-minute video was for the “Celebration of Christian Unity” event organized by John 17 Ministries out of
Pheonix, Ariz., which seeks to unite Christians and Catholics.
• “I feel like saying something that may sound controversial, or even heretical, perhaps,” Francis stated. “But there is
someone who ‘knows’ that despite our differences we are one.”
• “The devil knows that Christians are disciples of Christ, that they are one, that they are brothers! He doesn’t care if they
are Evangelicals or Orthodox, Lutherans, Catholics or Apostolic … He doesn’t care! They are Christians,” he said.
• The pontiff asserted that the devil is persecuting both evangelicals and Roman Catholics alike because they are all
Christian.
• “It is he who is persecuting us. It is he who is persecuting Christians today, he who is anointing us with (the blood of)
martyrdom,” he said. “Dear brothers and sisters, we are living in an ‘ecumenism of blood.'”
• Connect with Christian News
• Francis said that he unity must be achieved by each individual as he doesn’t believe it will occur at the hands of Bible
scholars.
• “I am convinced it won’t be theologians who bring about unity among us,” he stated. “Theologians help us, … but if we
hope that theologians will agree with one another, we will reach unity the day after Judgement Day.”
• However, some disagree with the pontiff’s ecumenical assertions, stating that unity should not be sought at the expense

1 Corinthians 11:30, Sin And Sickness
• 1 Corinthians 11:30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep.
• Oh, how horrible our sins look when they are committed by someone else. Charles Swindoll
• sickness unto death, sin unto death
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY
• Dear Compass,
• I have heard several Bible teachers refer to sin causing people to be sick. Are sin and sickness actually tied together?
•
ANSWER:
• Jesus did tie health directly to sin when He said to the Jews under Law:
• . . . do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse may befall you —John 5:14 For those living in the Church Age, the Bible warns us about unrepentant sin,
that we risk being in a "sickness unto death." (John 11:4, 1 John 5:16). There are also consequences of sin, but sickness is just one of many possibilities.
For instance: Homosexuality/promiscuity may result in AIDS. and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and
burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. —
Romans 1:27
• Committing adultery may cause marriage problems.
• Stealing may cause you to end up in jail.
• You were born with a sin nature. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. —1 Corinthians 15:22 That's why you won't live forever
on this earth. And your sin nature causes you to have sickness and disease unrelated to any physical actions or sin on your part. Therefore, you can't
say that just because someone is sick, they are in sin. And never forget that even though we have a sin nature ("If we say that we have no sin, we are
deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. —1 John 1:8), we are clean before God. As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us. —Psalm 103:12having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which
was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. —Colossians2:14
• Our sins have been paid for on the Cross (See Colossians 2:14 above).
• Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account. —Romans 4:8

1 Corinthians 11:32, Whole World, all the world,
TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT, THE LOS LUNAS
ROCK
• TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT, THE LOS LUNAS ROCK
• "'You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have crossed over, that you may enter the
land which the LORD your God is giving you…'"
• Did someone engrave the Ten Commandments, in ancient Hebrew, on a New Mexico rock 2,000 years
ago?
• The Los Lunas RockIn 1871, Indians showed New Mexico rancher Franz Huning a basalt boulder on his
land. The boulder had strange writing on it. The Indians told him that the rock, with its writing, had been
there long before their tribes ever came to the area. Scholars were brought in to look at the rock. They
identified the writing as paleo Hebrew script of the style in use between 500 and 100 B.C. What did the
engraving say on what has come to be known as the Los Lunas Rock? It was an engraving of the Ten
Commandments. But who could have made it?
• There are additional finds that are even more astonishing and seem to make the answer obvious. Above
the rock is a flat mountain top. On the mountain top are ancient ruins of stone structures that seem to
be designed for defense. Its design has been compared to the ruins of Lachish, in southern Judea.
Another Hebrew inscription on the mountaintop names the God of Israel as "our Mighty One." An
astronomical petroglyph indicates a partial solar eclipse that is known to have taken place in 107 B.C.
This coincides with an archaeologist's dating of the engravings to about 2,000 years ago.
• Did travelers from southern Judea settle in what is now New Mexico some 2,000 years ago? Exciting
evidence supports that possibility and challenges modern stereotypes about the abilities and
accomplishments of the humans of 2,000 years ago.”

1 corinthians 11, jesus’ looks; headship roles; drunk wine; head coverings, talit, prayer shawl; sickness sin unto death; examine; hair, hats; yarmalka, kippah

  • 1. 1 Corinthians 11 What Jesus Looked Like; Headship/roles; Drinking Wine; Head Coverings, Talit, Or Prayer Shawl; Sin, Sickness, And Sin Unto Death; Examine Yourselves; Long Hair; “yarmalka, kippah”
  • 2. BIBLE IN FIVE Pastor Dave Kooyers Valley Bible Fellowship Box 433 Boonville CA 95415 http://www.slideshare.net/dkooyers www.ValleyBibleFellowship.org (707) 895-2325 God bless you as you examine His Word, Your servant in Christ, 2Cor. 4:5 These Microsoft PowerPoint presentations are provided "for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12-15). To help Christians to "to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." So that "we are no longer...tossed here and there...by every wind of doctrine." They may be downloaded and modified free of charge. Matthew 10:8 …Freely you received, freely give.
  • 3. 1 Corinthians 11 Bible’s Toughest Chapter? • Many Bible teachers consider this the toughest chapter in the Bible; • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:4 Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:7 For a man ought not to have his head covered… • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:14 …if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him…
  • 4. 1 Corinthians 11 Let’s read1 Corinthians 11:1-22
  • 5. 1 Corinthians 11:3 Headship (roles) Not Ontology (nature of being) • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. • Trinity= equal Divine nature, yet different roles, Humans= equal nature, different roles • NAU Galatians 3:27 …if you belong to Christ… 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
  • 6. 1 Corinthians 11:7, Why do religious male Jews cover their heads? • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
  • 7. 1 Corinthians 11:7, Head coverings, Why do religious male Jews cover their heads? • Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg wrote, “Religious male Jews cover their heads with platter- shaped cap (yarmalkah), usually made of cloth to distinguish between them and their Creator. • The custom of wearing such “yarmalka” (also known as “kippah”) is itself not rooted in the Hebrew Bible as is the case with tzitzit – tassels, hanging from the corners of male clothes (Num. 15:38).
  • 8. 1 Corinthians 11:7, Head coverings, Why do religious male Jews cover their heads? • The covering of the head in Biblical times was something mandatory only for the highpriest. The idea of all males covering their heads was an invention of emerging rabbinical Judaism (around 3rd century CE) that sought to reconstitute Israel under their leadership after the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, symbolically projecting priestly duties on every male Jew. • But what does “yarmalkah” mean in Hebrew? The answer is nothing. The word is in Judeo-German language called Yiddish. It is compound word made up of two Aramaic words – Yar (fear) – Malkah (the King)…”
  • 9. 1 Corinthians 11:7, Tassels, Shawl 9
  • 10. 1 Corinthians 11:7, Tassels, Shawl • NAU Matthew 23:5 "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. • Jerusalem Photo Trivia, Rebecca Kowalsky's photograph of a man in prayer amidst the fields and sky, contemplating the Almighty. • A Talit, or prayer shawl, is a garment with fringes which is wrapped around a supplicant during prayer, as a constant reminder to fulfill God’s commandments. 10
  • 11. 1 Corinthians 11:7-9, The Bible Knowledge Commentary • 11:7–9. “The man, on the other hand, was not to have his head covered because he was the image and glory of God. Paul based this conclusion on Genesis 1:26–27. A woman’s (a wife’s) glory and image was derived from (1 Cor. 11:8) and complementary to (v. 9) that of the man (her husband). Man, then, was God’s authoritative representative who found in 11
  • 12. 1 Corinthians 11:7-9, The Bible Knowledge Commentary • woman a divinely made ally in fulfilling this role (Gen. 2:18–24). In this sense she as a wife is the glory of man, her husband. If a married woman abandoned this complementary role, she also abandoned her glory, and for Paul an uncovered woman’s head gave symbolic expression to that spirit.” • Lowery, D.K., 1985. 1 Corinthians. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck, eds. The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures. Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, p. 529 12
  • 13. 1 Corinthians 11:10, • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. • NAS NKJ NET ESV NAU …a symbol of… • GNV KJV …power on her head… • YLT …a token of… • NIVO …a sign of… • NJB …this is why it is right for a woman to wear on her head a sign of the authority over her… • MIT …a symbol visible on her head that she is under authority… • BGT …ὀφείλει ἡ γυνὴ ἐξουσίαν ἔχειν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς… 13
  • 14. 1 Corinthians 11:10, OT Covered Heads Indicated Weeping And Mourning • NAU 2 Samuel 15:30 And David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went, and his head was covered and he walked barefoot. Then all the people who were with him each covered his head and went up weeping as they went. • NAU Esther 6:12 Then Mordecai returned to the king's gate. But Haman hurried home, mourning, with his head covered. 14
  • 15. 1 Corinthians 11:10, The Bible Knowledge Commentary • 11:10. “Paul offered a third reason (the first reason was the divine order—God, Christ, man, woman, vv. 3–6; the second reason was Creation, vv. 7–9) why womanly insubordination in the church should not exist. Angels were spectators of the church (4:9; Eph. 3:10; 1 Tim. 5:21; cf. Ps. 103:20–21). For a woman to exercise her freedom to participate in the church without the head covering, the sign of her authority (exousia, a liberating term; cf. 1 Cor. 7:37; 8:9; 9:4–6, 12, 18), would be to 15
  • 16. 1 Corinthians 11:10, The Bible Knowledge Commentary • bring the wisdom of God (Eph. 3:10) into disrepute. • Other (but less acceptable) explanations have been suggested for the words because of the “angels”: (a) evil angels lusted after the women in the Corinthian congregation; (b) angels are messengers, that is, pastors; (c) good angels learn from women; (d) good angels are an example of subordination; (e) good angels would be tempted by a woman’s insubordination.” • Lowery, D.K., 1985. 1 Corinthians. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck, eds. The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures. Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, p. 529 16
  • 17. 1 Corinthians 11:14, Long Hair • I am sure that you’ve heard about the father who insisted his teenage son get a haircut because the New Testament does not allow long hair. He based it on; • KJV Matthew 24:17 …top not come down… • KJV Matthew 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 1 7
  • 18. 1 Corinthians 11:14, What Jesus Looks Likepopularmechanics.com • Nancy Peterman wrote, “This article from Popular Mechanics is quite interesting. Obviously we will not know what Jesus looks like until we get to see Him Face to face, but points out some obvious things that Western art usually misses! Just some fun, with some science behind it, but I know it's not definitive.” 1 8
  • 19. The Real Face Of Jesus Advances in forensic science reveal the most famous face in history. By Mike Fillon, Jan 23, 2015, popularmechanics.com • “From the first time Christian children settle into Sunday school classrooms, an image of Jesus Christ is etched into their minds. In North America he is most often depicted as being taller than his disciples, lean, with long, flowing, light brown hair, fair skin and light-colored eyes. Familiar though this image may be, it is inherently flawed. A person with these features and physical bearing would have looked very different from everyone else in the region where Jesus lived and ministered. Surely the authors of the Bible would have mentioned so stark a contrast. • On the contrary, according to the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane before the Crucifixion, Judas Iscariot had to indicate to the soldiers whom Jesus was because they could not tell him apart from his disciples. Further clouding the question of what Jesus looked like is the simple fact that nowhere in the New Testament is Jesus described, nor have any drawings of him ever been uncovered. • There is the additional problem of having neither a skeleton nor other bodily remains to probe for DNA. In the absence of evidence, our images of Jesus have been left to the imagination of artists. The influences of the artists' cultures and traditions can be profound, observes Carlos F. Cardoza-Orlandi, associate professor of world Christianity at Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta. "While Western imagery is dominant, in other parts of the world he is often shown as black, Arab or Hispanic." And so the fundamental question remains: What did Jesus look like? • An answer has emerged from an exciting new field of science: forensic anthropology. Using methods similar to those police have developed to solve crimes, British scientists, assisted by Israeli archeologists, have re-created what they believe is the most accurate image of the most famous face in human history. • THE BODY AS EVIDENCE • An outgrowth of physical anthropology, forensic anthropology uses cultural and archeological data as well as the physical and biological sciences to study different groups of people, explains A. Midori Albert, a professor who teaches forensic anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Experts in this highly specialized field require a working knowledge of genetics, and human growth and development. In their research they also draw from the fields of primatology, paleoanthropology (the study of primate and human evolution) and human osteology (the study of the skeleton). Even seemingly distant fields like nutrition, dentistry and climate adaptation play a role in this type of investigation. 1 9 Don't squint! The complete article follows after the THE END slide.
  • 20. 1 Corinthians 11:14 “long hair is a disgrace” popularmechanics.com • “…It was the Bible, however, that resolved the question of the length of Jesus's hair. While most religious artists have put long hair on Christ, most biblical scholars believe that it was probably short with tight curls. This assumption, however, contradicted what many believe to be the most authentic depiction: the face seen in the image on the famous—some say infamous—Shroud of Turin. The shroud is believed by many to be the cloth in which Jesus's body was wrapped after his death. Although there is a difference of opinion as to 2 0
  • 21. 1 Corinthians 11:14 “long hair is a disgrace” popularmechanics.com • whether the shroud is genuine, it clearly depicts a figure with long hair. Those who criticize the shroud's legitimacy point to 1 Corinthians, one of the many New Testament books the apostle Paul is credited with writing. In one chapter he mentions having seen Jesus—then later describes long hair on a man as disgraceful. Would Paul have written "If a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him" if Jesus Christ had had long hair? For Neave and his team this settled the issue. Jesus, as drawings from the first century depict, would have had short hair, appropriate to men of the time.…” 2 1
  • 22. 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 Covered Heads? • There is not one use of any word like “hat, helmet, turban, scarf, veil, or shawl”, no mention of anything man-made • There is use of the words; “head covered/uncovered, shaved, hair, long hair (authority/independent, dishonor/glory) • NAU Deuteronomy 22:12 "You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of your garment with which you cover yourself. • So, what is a “head covering”? 22
  • 23. 1 Corinthians 11:1-16, Covered Heads? • What is a “head covered, or covering? A kippah, shawl, burka, huge bonnet, a barrette, a ribbon, bobby pins? If important, I think Paul would have specified. 23 I searched “lesbian hats” and got these 4 photos
  • 24. 1 Corinthians 11:14-15 Heads Covered With Hair • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering. • NAU Romans 14:1 Now accept the one who is weak in faith… 4 Who are you to judge the servant of another?… 5 …Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind… 23…whatever is not from faith is sin.
  • 25. 1 Corinthians 11:15 “Long” is a relative term • Ask a Marine drill sergeant what “long” is? • All of us do not have long luxurious hair; • Shelley Toren tells that, “One evening while my daughters were taking a bath together, 4-year- old Andrea began pouring water over her 10- month-old sister's bald little head. Exasperated, I asked Andrea what she was doing. Without a moment's hesitation, she replied, • "I'm watering Rachel's head so her hair will grow!”
  • 26. 1 Cor. 11:14-15, Long Hair On Men? • gracethrufaith.com Q. Re: What Did Jesus Look Like? … • A. 1 Cor. 11:14-15 is a relative statement. In Paul’s time women let their hair grow long enough to come down almost to their waist. But men didn’t let their hair grow below their shoulders. Today we think a man with shoulder length hair has very long hair, but in Paul’s day it was the norm. What was dishonoring was for a man to let his hair grow so long it resembled a woman’s hair. This is similar to the prohibition against women dressing like men and men dressing like women (Deut. 22:5). It was not meant to prevent women from wearing pants to church. Neither sex wore pants in Biblical times. It was a prohibition against “cross dressing”, where women dress to present themselves as men and men dress to present themselves as women.” • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/long-hair- men/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFait h%29 26
  • 27. 1 Corinthians 11:12 God Ordains Different Roles For Us • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:12 For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. • Mary Ellen Deters wrote, “Our six-year-old son, Alex, was looking at a picture of himself when he was one week old. Upon seeing his umbilical cord still attached in the picture, he asked, "What is that black thing on my belly button?" • His eight-year-old sister, Maria, quickly replied, "That's your extension cord!" 27
  • 28. 1 Corinthians 11:16, Feminism? • 1 Corinthians 11:16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. • The MacArthur Study Bible, Page 1700, says, “Neither the Lord, the apostles, nor the churches would allow female rebellion. Women were to maintain their distinctively feminine hairdos; and when custom dictated, they should wear a covering.”
  • 29. 1 Corinthians 11:18, Divisions • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. • NAU 1 Cor 1:10 …no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. • NAU Jude 1:3 …contend earnestly for the faith… 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly- minded, devoid of the Spirit. • NAU John 10:19 A division occurred again among the Jews because of these[Jesus’] words. 29

Deuteronomy 14:24 Don't Get Drunk Drinking Wine • NAU Deuteronomy 14:24 "And if the distance is so great for you that you are not able to bring the tithe… 25 then you shall exchange it for money… 26 "And you may spend the money for whatever your heart desires, for oxen, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatever your heart desires; and there you shall eat in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household. • NAU Psalm 104:14 He [the LORD] causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation… So that he may bring forth food from the earth, 15 And wine which makes man's heart glad, So that he may make his face glisten with oil, And food which sustains man's heart. 3 2
  • 33. 1 Corinthians 11:21, Do Not Get Drunk • Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
  • 34. 1 Corinthians 11:25 The Blood Of The Covenant • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” • Exodus 24:8 So Moses…said, "Behold the blood of the covenant… • Zechariah 9:11 …the blood of My covenant… • Matthew 26:28 …for forgiveness of sins. • Jeremiah 31:31 …I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and …Judah • Mark 14:24, Hebrews 9:20,10:29,12:24,13:20
  • 35. 1 Corinthians 11:27 Guilt Bad Or Good? • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. • NAU Hosea 5:15 I will go away and return to My place Until they acknowledge their guilt and seek My face; In their affliction they will earnestly seek Me. • John MacArthur says, “Spiritual life without guilt would be like physical life without pain. Guilt is a defense mechanism; it’s like an alarm that goes off to lead you to confession when you sin.” 35
  • 36. 1 Corinthians 11:28 Examine Yourselves • NAU 1 Corinthians 11:28 But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. • 2 Corinthians 13:5 …examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-- unless indeed you fail the test? • Galatians 6:4 But each one must examine his own work… • 1 Thessalonians 5:21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil.
  • 37. 1 Corinthians 11:28, Examine Me, Examine Our Ways, Test Yourselves • NAU Lamentations 3:40 Let us examine and probe our ways… • 1 Corinthians 4:3 …the one who examines me is the Lord. • NAU Galatians 6:4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. • “Oh, how horrible our sins look when they are committed by someone else.” Charles Swindoll

  • 49. 1 Corinthians 11:7, Who is your covering? By Jim Allen, http://www.blogos.org/keepwatch/spiritual-covering.php • Who is your covering? • By Jim Allen As the underground Chinese pastor once told his congregation after having visited America and her churches. "It is amazing to see what American believers can accomplish without God." [1] This pastor's perception of American believers is profound and, as I am learning, not unique to the foreign faithful. For some of us it may be a revelation to learn how the world is looking upon American believers as less than Christian. An American pastor once said during a European conference, "The Gospel came to the Greeks and the Greeks turned it into a philosophy…the Romans turned it into a system…Europeans turned it into a culture…and the Americans turned it into a business." [2] Many American institutions have turned Christianity into a business, becoming major media portals to the world that televises despicable heresies (2 Peter 2:1). Is it possible that American believers have fallen so far from the truth they are now blind to their downward plight? Have they become lukewarm believers (Revelation 3:14–21)? "The Laodiceans understood the analogy because their city drinking water came from a spring six miles to the south over an aqueduct, and it arrived disgustingly lukewarm. It was not hot like the nearby hot springs that people bathed in, nor was it refreshingly cold for drinking. People who profess faith in Christ without possessing a solid, foundational view of the true gospel will be vulnerable to illusory snares set by false religious leaders. One way to think about an illusory snare, and its captivating power, is the monkey snare. In Burma, villagers hunt for monkeys by removing the contents of a coconut and filling it with fruit or peanuts much desired by the primate. The villager attaches a rope to the coconut and ties it to a tree. When a monkey finds the coconut and reaches inside to remove the fruit, its closed fist becomes the trap. The villager made the opening big enough for the monkey to slip its hand through but not big enough for the primate to withdraw its clenched fist. About five years ago I learned about a new teaching circulating in our church that was introduced with a question, "Who is your covering?" Having no clue, I soon learned the church leaders had announced they were adopting the teaching on pastoral authority. The central theme for the teaching is God guarantees protection for believers who submit to thepastor, which is to do as told. On the flipside of the theme, failure to submit to the pastor results in the removal of God's protective hand on your life. After researching the teaching, I found it had no basis and was pure heresy. Did the leaders in my former church understand they were setting a monkey trap? No, they had no clue, and when told about the deception they rejected those of us who went forward with the warning. They did not possess a solid, foundational view of the true gospel and were vulnerable to this particular illusory snare gaining a foothold within the evangelical church. Apparently, my former church was eager to bring the assembly of American believers under its control. "To disobey the pastor, even when the pastor is wrong, is to disobey God because the pastor is always in authority and God the ultimate authority. In other words, the pastor stands in authority between Jesus and the body of believers, becoming the spiritual covering over his or her church. In fact, this teaching refers to lowly believers as sheep, not too bright, often confused, and in need of a shepherd to lead them." [4] In closing, my former church had big plans to build schools and retirement centers. They had become an institution focused on turning Christianity into a business using the name of Jesus. They needed money and a gullible laity to finance their agenda over God's. 1 Timothy 2:3 says, "For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus." 1. • 50. 5 0
  • 51. 1 Cor. 11:14-15 Long Hair On Men • Q. Re: What Did Jesus Look Like? I was reading your response about what Jesus looked like, and it reminded me of something I’d read elsewhere about Jesus and long hair. The person cited 1 Cor. 11:14-15. “Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.” If men wore their hair long in the 1st century (as I’ve always believed), then why would Paul say that long hair is dishonorable to a man? • A. It was a prohibition against “cross dressing”, where women dress to present themselves as men and men dress to present themselves as women. • http://gracethrufaith.com/ask-a-bible-teacher/long-hair- men/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Gracethrufaith+%28GraceThruFaith%29 51

They are Christians." Read more. [http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/news/2015/05/25/the-devil-knows-christians-are-one-says-pope-francis/] • Mike's Comment: The pope has blasphemed the Holy Spirit by attributing the work of Christ to the work of the devil. It is the Lord Jesus who divides believers from unbelievers by the truth of His Word (Luke 12:51-53). Born-again Christians and Catholics will always be divided on the essentials of the Gospel, how one is born again, how one is justified, how one is purified of sin, who can mediate between God and man, and the efficacy, sufficiency and necessity of Jesus Christ for salvation. Pope Francis is the one who is doing the work of the devil by rebuilding the religious tower of Babel as he seeks to unite all Christians under the papacy. Tragically, some evangelicals are jumping on his ecumenical bandwagon by denying the exclusivity of God's Gospel. Read more of Mike's response in an interview with the Christian News Network. 54

  • 56. 1 Corinthians 11:30, Sin And Sickness • 1 Corinthians 11:30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. • Oh, how horrible our sins look when they are committed by someone else. Charles Swindoll • sickness unto death, sin unto death • QUESTION FOR THE DAY • Dear Compass, • I have heard several Bible teachers refer to sin causing people to be sick. Are sin and sickness actually tied together? • ANSWER: • Jesus did tie health directly to sin when He said to the Jews under Law: • . . . do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse may befall you —John 5:14 For those living in the Church Age, the Bible warns us about unrepentant sin, that we risk being in a "sickness unto death." (John 11:4, 1 John 5:16). There are also consequences of sin, but sickness is just one of many possibilities. For instance: Homosexuality/promiscuity may result in AIDS. and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error. — Romans 1:27 • Committing adultery may cause marriage problems. • Stealing may cause you to end up in jail. • You were born with a sin nature. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. —1 Corinthians 15:22 That's why you won't live forever on this earth. And your sin nature causes you to have sickness and disease unrelated to any physical actions or sin on your part. Therefore, you can't say that just because someone is sick, they are in sin. And never forget that even though we have a sin nature ("If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. —1 John 1:8), we are clean before God. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. —Psalm 103:12having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. —Colossians2:14 • Our sins have been paid for on the Cross (See Colossians 2:14 above). • Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account. —Romans 4:8 •

  • 58. 1 Corinthians 11:32, Whole World, all the world, TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT, THE LOS LUNAS ROCK • TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT, THE LOS LUNAS ROCK • "'You shall write on them all the words of this law, when you have crossed over, that you may enter the land which the LORD your God is giving you…'" • Did someone engrave the Ten Commandments, in ancient Hebrew, on a New Mexico rock 2,000 years ago? • The Los Lunas RockIn 1871, Indians showed New Mexico rancher Franz Huning a basalt boulder on his land. The boulder had strange writing on it. The Indians told him that the rock, with its writing, had been there long before their tribes ever came to the area. Scholars were brought in to look at the rock. They identified the writing as paleo Hebrew script of the style in use between 500 and 100 B.C. What did the engraving say on what has come to be known as the Los Lunas Rock? It was an engraving of the Ten Commandments. But who could have made it? • There are additional finds that are even more astonishing and seem to make the answer obvious. Above the rock is a flat mountain top. On the mountain top are ancient ruins of stone structures that seem to be designed for defense. Its design has been compared to the ruins of Lachish, in southern Judea. Another Hebrew inscription on the mountaintop names the God of Israel as "our Mighty One." An astronomical petroglyph indicates a partial solar eclipse that is known to have taken place in 107 B.C. This coincides with an archaeologist's dating of the engravings to about 2,000 years ago. • Did travelers from southern Judea settle in what is now New Mexico some 2,000 years ago? Exciting evidence supports that possibility and challenges modern stereotypes about the abilities and accomplishments of the humans of 2,000 years ago.” • Notes: Creation Science Fellowship Newsletter, Aug. 1992. p. 4. 5 8

The Science Of How Trains Turn Without Falling Off The Tracks, By Mike Fillon, Jan 23, 2015 “From the first time Christian children settle into Sunday school classrooms, an image of Jesus Christ is etched into their minds. On the contrary, according to the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane before the Crucifixion, Judas Iscariot had to indicate to the soldiers whom Jesus was because they could not tell him apart from his disciples. Further clouding the question of what Jesus looked like is the simple fact that nowhere in the New Testament is Jesus described, nor have any drawings of him ever been uncovered. There is the additional problem of having neither a skeleton nor other bodily remains to probe for DNA. An answer has emerged from an exciting new field of science: forensic anthropology. Using methods similar to those police have developed to solve crimes, British scientists, assisted by Israeli archeologists, have re-created what they believe is the most accurate image of the most famous face in human history. THE BODY AS EVIDENCE An outgrowth of physical anthropology, forensic anthropology uses cultural and archeological data as well as the physical and biological sciences to study different groups of people, explains A. While forensic anthropology is usually used to solve crimes, Richard Neave, a medical artist retired from The University of Manchester in England, realized it also could shed light on the appearance of Jesus. The co-author of Making Faces: Using Forensic And Archaeological Evidence, Neave had ventured in controversial areas before. Over the past two decades, he had reconstructed dozens of famous faces, including Philip II of Macedonia, the father of Alexander the Great, and King Midas of Phrygia. If anyone could create an accurate portrait of Jesus, it would be Neave. RECONSTRUCTING JESUS Matthew's description of the events in Gethsemane offers an obvious clue to the face of Jesus. It is clear that his features were typical of Galilean Semites of his era. And so the first step for Neave and his research team was to acquire skulls from near Jerusalem, the region where Jesus lived and preached. Semite skulls of this type had previously been found by Israeli archeology experts, who shared them with Neave. With three well-preserved specimens from the time of Jesus in hand, Neave used computerized tomography to create X-ray "slices" of the skulls, thus revealing minute details about each one's structure. Special computer programs then evaluated reams of information about known measurements of the thickness of soft tissue at key areas on human faces. This made it possible to re-create the muscles and skin overlying a representative Semite skull. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below The entire process was accomplished using software that verified the results with anthropological data. From this data, the researchers built a digital 3D reconstruction of the face. Next, they created a cast of the skull. Layers of clay matching the thickness of facial tissues specified by the computer program were then applied, along with simulated skin. The nose, lips and eyelids were then modeled to follow the shape determined by the underlying muscles. A MATTER OF STYLE Two key factors could not be determined from the skull—Jesus's hair and coloration. To fill in these parts of the picture, Neave's team turned to drawings found at various archeological sites, dated to the first century. Drawn before the Bible was compiled, they held crucial clues that enabled the researchers to determine that Jesus had dark rather than light-colored eyes. They also pointed out that in keeping with Jewish tradition, he was bearded as well. It was the Bible, however, that resolved the question of the length of Jesus's hair. Although there is a difference of opinion as to whether the shroud is genuine, it clearly depicts a figure with long hair. Jesus, as drawings from the first century depict, would have had short hair, appropriate to men of the time. The historic record also resolved the issue of Jesus's height. From an analysis of skeletal remains, archeologists had firmly established that the average build of a Semite male at the time of Jesus was 5 ft. 1 in., with an average weight of about 110 pounds. Since Jesus worked outdoors as a carpenter until he was about 30 years old, it is reasonable to assume he was more muscular and physically fit than westernized portraits suggest. His face was probably weather-beaten, which would have made him appear older, as well. "The fact that he probably looked a great deal more like a darker-skinned Semite than westerners are used to seeing him pictured is a reminder of his universality," says Charles D. Hackett, director of Episcopal studies at the Candler School of Theology in Atlanta. "And [it is] a reminder of our tendency to sinfully appropriate him in the service of our cultural values." Neave emphasizes that his re-creation is simply that of an adult man who lived in the same place and at the same time as Jesus. As might well be expected, not everyone agrees. Forensic depictions are not an exact science, cautions Alison Galloway, professor of anthropology at the University of California in Santa Cruz. The details in a face follow the soft tissue above the muscle, and it is here where forensic artists differ widely in technique. Galloway points out that some artists pay more attention to the subtle differences in such details as the distance between the bottom of the nose and the mouth. And the most recognizable features of the face—the folds of the eyes, structure of the nose and shape of the mouth—are left to the artist. "In some cases the resemblance between the reconstruction and the actual individual can be uncanny," says Galloway. "But in others there may be more resemblance with the other work of the same artist." Despite this reservation, she reaches one conclusion that is inescapable to almost everyone who has ever seen Neave's Jesus. "This is probably a lot closer to the truth than the work of many great masters."”

The Los Lunas RockIn 1871, Indians showed New Mexico rancher Franz Huning a basalt boulder on his land. There are additional finds that are even more astonishing and seem to make the answer obvious. Did travelers from southern Judea settle in what is now New Mexico some 2,000 years ago? Exciting evidence supports that possibility and challenges modern stereotypes about the abilities and accomplishments of the humans of 2,000 years ago.” Notes: Creation Science Fellowship Newsletter, Aug. 1992. p. 4.
