3. CELEBRITY CONTRIBUTIONS
Many celebrities have not only supported the Run for the Cure and the Breast Cancer
Foundation, but have survived the fight of breast cancer themselves
Olivia Newton John fought breast cancer in 1992, and Melissa Etheridge suffered through
the same fight in 2004
Melissa Etheridge is one of the main supporters of the Run for the Cure – she even wrote
a song titled ‘I Run for Life’ which references her own fight with breast cancer and her
determination to overcome it, as well as encourages other breast cancer survivors and
their families (www.wikipedia.com)
Many companies hold fundraisers which raise money for the Run for the Cure including
Holt Renfrew who held an event in Vancouver last year which many stars, such as
Elizabeth Hurley, attended dressed in pink

The Run for the Cure was created in 1992 by a small group of volunteers who were set on making a
difference. The first Run took place in Toronto where 1,500 people gathered raising an impressive
$85,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. In 1997, CIBC joined as the title sponsor for the run
alongside other well known names such as M&M, The Running Room, McCain, and many more. As
the years went by more and more people became dedicated to raising awareness for the Run and in
2007, 53 communities and 170,000 Canadians participated in the Run. They raised an outstanding
$27 million which demonstrated the dedication and awareness the Run had produced over the
years.(https://www.cibcrunforthecure.com/html/en/ab_history.asp)
In 2008, 55 communities and 170,000 Canadians participated in the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure. Together, we raised $28.5 million for breast cancer research,
education, and awareness programs

9. Breast cancer is a disease that affects Canadians and people all over the world on a
regular basis. The Run for the Cure is a very inspiring experience that brings people together of all
ages, backgrounds, and stories with 1 common purpose in mind – a world free of breast cancer. It
is an event that has been taking place for 17 years and has raised an unbelievable amount of
funding towards breast cancer research, awareness, and education. Each year volunteers, friends
and family gather to fundraise then participate in the 5k or 1k run. People congregate into a sea of
baby pink – the representing colour of the Breast Cancer Foundation, and head out walking,
running, skipping or hand in hand with the person next to them. It truly is an event that represents
the strength, courage, and hardships that people go through during the fight through breast
cancer. (www.cibcrunforthecure.com)
There are so many ways to participate in this event. Even if you couldn’t partake or
volunteer at the physical run, you could join the virtual run on the Canadian Breast Cancer website.
It is as simple as registering and fundraising online before you are one of the many people who
make a difference. There are also many t-shirts, posters, and the classic pink ribbon that are
available for purchase which contribute to the fundraising for this event. Not only does this
occasion focus on fundraising for breast cancer but it also on brings many families and friends
together. There is the opportunity to make teams in which you can fundraise and run with. The
teams can register their team name online at the Canadian Breast Cancer website and have the
chance to win many prizes in reward to their fundraising efforts. (www.cibcrunforthecure.com)
