Dr. John Oakes taught a class on the commonly-held doctrine known as “Once Saved, Always Saved”, also known as Perseverance of the Saints. The class was taught in San Diego Nov. 6, 2014 at the Mission Center of Hope. The outline of the class was: I. Where did this doctrine come from? II. What proof-texts will the believer in this doctrine use? and III. What does the Bible teach on perseverance/falling away?

This is Part 4 of the message series EXPLORE GOD. This series is designed to help answer the 7 biggest questions of life. The fourth question is this: "IS CHRISTIANITY TOO NARROW?" In this message, Pastor Chuck Bernal discusses the narrowness and exclusivity of the Christian faith and why the claims of Christ declare that He is the ONLY way to know God. This message was delivered on October 4, 2015 at LifePointe Church in Crowley, TX.
According to Romans 8:29-30, God predetermined that certain individuals would be conformed to the likeness of His Son, be called, justified, and glorified. Essentially, God predetermines that certain individuals will be saved. Numerous scriptures refer to believers in Christ being chosen (Matthew 24:22, 31; Mark 13:20, 27; Romans 8:33, 9:11, 11:5-7, 28; Ephesians 1:11; Colossians 3:12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4; 1 Timothy 5:21; 2 Timothy 2:10; Titus 1:1; 1 Peter 1:1-2, 2:9; 2 Peter 1:10). Predestination is the biblical doctrine that God in His sovereignty chooses certain individuals to be saved, but this does not mean that all those who are saved were chosen in advance, just a select few for His purposes.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
3. Moses offered two paths to Israel: one leading to
life, and another one leading to death.
Do we have the same options today? Is there a
third or fourth option? Is it important to make a
decision, or can we just go with the flow?
The message in Deuteronomy is very clear. The
most important piece of advice for us was given by
God through Moses, “Therefore choose life.”
(Dt. 30:19)
4. There are many different types of living beings on Earth, but only
humans can make moral decisions.
God didn’t give animals the ability to choose which food they could
eat (Gn. 1:30). However, He forbade humans from eating a specific
fruit, and told them about the consequences of disobeying.
Nevertheless, God intervened to avoid
leaving the fate of humanity to the
consequence of that decision. He conceived
a plan to give us access to the tree of life
through Jesus (Rev. 2:7; 22:2).
Adam and Eve chose death. They disobeyed and lost
access to the tree of life (Gn. 3:22).
5. Is there middle ground? Can we be part of life and death at the
same time? Can we just be neutral? Can we avoid making a stand,
and therefore make no decision at all?
“He who has the Son has life; he who does not have
the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:12)
The Bible presents only two options, we can only choose
between life and death.
John was very clear about this. Those who
accept Jesus as their Savior have life. Those who
doesn’t are dead (i.e. will suffer eternal death).
Making no decision or postponing it is like
choosing death. There are no more options.
“THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE” (Dt. 30:19)
6. “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil,” (Deuteronomy 30:15)
The difference between life and death is determined
by good (life) and evil (death). God’s offer is quite
simple, He offers us one option: good and therefore
life.
He explained what good is, “that I command you today
to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to
keep His commandments, His statutes, and His
judgments, that you may live.” (Dt. 30:16)
Loving God gives us life. Death is the
natural consequence of living apart from
Him. Lucifer was the first being to choose
death. We are all struggling between these
two options since then.
“THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE” (Dt. 30:19)
7. He also guaranteed them that He would always be
willing to forgive them and give them a second
chance if they ever disobeyed (Dt. 30:1-3).
AN EASY CHOICE
In order to make conscious decisions, we should understand the
consequences of each option. Therefore, God explained the consequences of
obeying Him or disobeying Him to Israel (Dt. 28).
On the other hand, making this decision is easy. God has loved us so
much that it’s easy to love Him back, and to do what He likes in
response (Jn. 3:16).
It’s also easy to know what God likes. It’s no mystery, as it’s been
clearly written in the Bible.
“THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE” (Dt. 30:19)
8. “Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and
follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify
against you this day that you shall surely perish.” (Deuteronomy 8:19)
Worship is key in the Great Controversy. God is “a jealous God,” (Dt. 5:9)
so He does not accept sharing our worship with anyone or anything else.
When we worship someone or something instead of God, we’re choosing
evil and death. Worship is more than bowing before an image. Accepting
the authority of people above God’s is also a matter of worship.
This will happen in the End Time, when “the
image of the beast” will impose an
authoritative mark against the Law of God.
However, this decision is not reserved to that moment. We must make the
decision between worshipping God or leaving Him aside every day.
“THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE” (Dt. 30:19)
9. “Every soul has a heaven to win, and a hell to
shun […] When the cases of all are judged […]
not one will have an excuse, not one will
need to have perished. It was left to their
own choice who should be their prince,
Christ or Satan. All the help Christ received,
every man may receive in the great trial. The
cross stands as a pledge that not one need be
lost, that abundant help is provided for
every soul.”
E. G. W. (Selected Messages, book 1, cp. 10, p. 96)
10. “The power of choice God has given to
men; it is theirs to exercise. You
cannot change your heart, you cannot
of yourself give to God its affections;
but you can choose to serve Him. You
can give Him your will; He will then
work in you to will and to do according
to His good pleasure.”
E. G. W. (Steps to Christ, cp. 5, p. 47)
