This document provides instructions for proper place setting etiquette, including which utensils and dishes should be placed where at the table. It explains the placement of forks from left to right, as well as the placement of knives, spoons, plates, glasses and other items. Proper etiquette is outlined for using and positioning each part of the place setting.

7. It can either be
placed in the place
setting’s center or
left of the last fork.
It should be placed
in your lap
immediately upon
taking your seat.

on the left side.
The salad fork
can be used for
salads
or small
appetizer plates.

the plate is for
the main entrée.

the right side,
and directly next
to the plate. If
and when you
may need a
steak knife, the
dinner knife will
be replaced at
the time the food
is served.

is on the far right
of the place
setting next to

dinner knife.

wine glass is
used along with
a water goblet.

determine which
glass/drink is
yours.

plate is placed
above the forks,
above and to the
left of the
service plate.
The butter knife
is laid on the
bread-and-butter
plate.

(or dessert knife)
is laid on the table
above the
dinner plate in a
horizontal position,
handle facing right.
It can be used for
coffee or tea as
well and is usually
smaller than the
soup spoon.
