Thomas was one of Jesus' twelve disciples. He was known as the "doubting disciple" because he did not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead until he saw Jesus' wounds for himself. Thomas established the first Christian church in India, where he was later martyred by being stabbed with a spear during a missionary trip. Matthew was another disciple who was originally a tax collector before being called by Jesus. He authored the Gospel of Matthew and suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia after being killed by a sword.
