- Identify the primary and secondary patterns of organization.Primary Patterns:Look for the thesis statement or central thought. Examine it closely to see which pattern it signals.Look for transitions that signal the primary pattern. Examine the supporting details if you cannot determine the primary pattern from the thesis. Identify the overall purpose of the essay and refer to Table 12-1 to determine the primary pattern.In an essay, check the conclusion paragraph. The summary often includes key points and the author’s organizational pattern.Secondary Patterns:Keep the length of the reading in mind. The longer the reading, the more likely it is to have multiple patterns.Examine topic sentences in essays. They may point to secondary patterns.Look for transitions that signal secondary patterns. Annotate and make notes about the patterns.Watch for single sentences that use secondary patterns. Definitions, examples, and descriptions can be within a single sentence.Activities:Exercise 12-1 (Identifying Primary Patterns of Organization) on pages 368-369.Exercise 12-2 (Secondary Patterns of Organization) on pages 370-371.
- The assignment: Analyze the assignment to determine if there is a primary pattern of organization. Look for key words and phrases that provide clues.The purpose: What are you trying to accomplish? What do you want readers to understand after they have read the essay?The audience: How much do the readers know about the topic? What can I assume about the readers’ experience and background? Who is most likely to read what I have written?Complexity of topic: For less complicated topics, you can use patterns that are less complicated such as description or example. For more complicated topics, you may want to utilize a pattern that allows greater analysis like cause and effect, classification, or compare and contrast.Course for which you are writing: Refer to the chart on page 376, which describes patterns of organization in terms of academic thought patterns.
- Examples help tie concepts and ideas to the real world.Many writings require readers to have basic understanding of concepts, so definition is common.Many types of writing require heavy levels of descriptions
- Narrow the topic and select primary and secondary organizational patterns.Write a thesis statement that reflects your primary pattern.Draft your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Include topic sentences that reflect your secondary patterns.Use transitions to help readers follow your thought patterns.Make sure your conclusion revisits your thesis statement and primary pattern.
