INRAP is one of the biggest European institutions in charge of unmovable archaeological heritage. Although centralised, INRAP is so big that a lot of diversity in terms of standards and tools existed. Therefore, ARIADNE was very helpful for Kai, Amala and their co-workers to apply some of the ARIADNE’s tools and approaches to INRAP. One of the top achievements of INRAP due to ARIADNE was ‘changing the culture of sharing’.

Archaeological Research
• A public institution established by a
national law in 2002 (under the Malta
convention)
• Missions that covers a national
territory :
– Realization of preventive
archaeological operations
– Exploitation of scientific data
– Education, cultural diffusion and
valorization
• 1 headquarter in Paris and 50

4. • Each archaeological operation:
– Administrative documentation
– Archaeological material / objects documentation
– Raw fields data (data recording, pictures, field minutes..)
– Spatial Data
– Data and documentation come from raw data studies
– Fields database
– Archaeological operation report
– And more and more often: 3D, photogrammetry, drone …
• And also:
– Dissemination documentation
– Database from research projects
– Others digital documentation from research projects

INRAP DIGITAL DATA PRODUCTION
5. • Several information systems developed:
– DOLIA (2009): Inrap documentary resources catalog with circa.
33 000 excavation reports notices & circa. 16 000 full text reports -
collaboration with Frantiq (use of PACTOLS thesaurus)
– EDArc (2014) : field recording system to produce harmonized and
interoperable data
– CAVIAR (2014): information system that gathers Inrap GIS data
Each archaeological centre managed its digital data.
The only mandatory digital document that was centralized : the
excavation report

INRAP BEFORE ARIADNE
6. • User needs survey and definition (French archaeological
community)
• Encourage collaboration between Frantiq & ARIADNE
• Dissemination to scientific community and ministries
• Participation of Inrap colleagues to summer & winter school
• DOLIA excavation reports notices referenced in ARIADNE
(circa. 28 000)
• Mapping field recording system EDArc with CIDOC CRM
• Mapping of Pactols thesaurus with AAT
• ARIADNE infrastructure testing (French archaeological

7. ARIADNE project stimulated the development of a real reflection
on data management and FAIR principles at Inrap
• Participation to national research groups:
– Couperin: national & multidisciplinary consortium on digital publication
– MASA: national consortium on archaeological digital data
• Conference on open access in archaeology organized by Inrap
• Data management reflection and implementation:
– Implementation of long-term preservation archiving (with CINES –
public institution)
– Organisation and harmonisation of data storage: NAS structuration and
development of an archive deposit procedure
– Development of a data managment plan (into MASA consortium):
testing phase

10. • Referenced more datasets in ARIADNE :
Using European project to push forward data structuration and data
opening
– Absolute dating database
– Excavation reports
– Research databases …
• Developed French user community:
– Inrap
– French archaeological community
– Wider community (heritage manager, ministries…)
• Promotion of FAIR principles
• In charge of coordinating and developing pilots to test the
infrastructure:
– Using this opportunity to develop pilots fully integrated to Inrap
research project and operational activities (NPL, 3D…)
