brief history of the company
Kubwa business unit is next after the headquarters at zone
4, Wuse,Abuja. It was established in June 2006 located at
plot 146, GadoNasko road, kubwa, Abuja, with great focus
on effective distribution of electricity to consumers,
maintenance, repair and operation of distribution network
and collection of payment for electricity bills
The basic organizational structure of Kubwa business unit is
 listed below:
 Administrative department
 Marketing department
 Finance and account department
 Technical department
Area of participation/work done
During my SIWES period I worked under:
 Services centre
 Injection substation
 Protection, control and metering
 Planning and construction
I participated in the mentioned activities below:
 Installation of transformer
 Mounting of concrete and wooden poles
 General maintenance on 33kv and 11kv lines
 Installation of single phase meter
 Opening and closing of feeder
 Pre-commissioning and confirmatory test on transformer
 Calculation of capacity test of a new transformer
 Involved in system load shedding and local load shedding
 Amending burnt up-riser and jumper cut
 Involved in calculating rated load of a j and p fuse
 Preparation of sanction list
Observations
 I observed that three disc insulator are used on 33kv line
while one disc insulator is used on 11kv line
 While in PC&M, I observed the value of earth test ranges
from (0-5)ohms
 I also observed that 11kv lightning arrestor is different
from 33kv lightning arrestor
 I observed in the switch yard at injection substation,
gang isolator are in between the power transformer and
circuit breaker
 I also observed that a voltage transformer is used in
metering the voltage coming into the injection substation
from the transmission station

 I used to help them in patrolling the feeder lines
 I partook in local load shedding on 3 different substation
 I did in reconnection of disconnected service cables
 I was involve separating twisted wire on low tension
lines
 I was also involve in testing of transformer at field work
 I partook in digging of earth pit and designing of earth
mat
 I was involve in recording of incoming voltage at hour
interval
 I was involve in Installation of a new transformer
 I partook in opening and restoring of feeders

Relevance of training to course of
study
The experience acquired during industrial
training has contributed tremendously to my
life by upgrading my technical skills. However, it
is of no doubt that the training I received is very
relevant to my course which is
physics/electronics. The theory that I learnt
from school would have been a waste of time
without the knowledge obtained from the
industrial training
Future career
The experience acquired during industrial
training has empowered me in self
entrepreneur in the establishment of power
monitoring and correction station in injection
substation.
recommendations
ITF should make monthly allowance available
for student, so as to put an end to financial
difficulties that may arise as a result of
transport challenges.
Institution and ITF should help student to get
a place of attachment so that the program
may commence as planned
Student should take the SIWES period
importantly and try as much as possible to
learn practical and not just theoretical
conclusion
I acquired skills in power system mostly in
transformer installation, testing of
transformer etc. and have had the
opportunity to experience the application
of theoretical knowledge acquired in the
classroom to solve real life problems, this
SIWES has been a success, because I
have gained knowledge that ordinarily
wouldn’t been obtained in the lecture hall
