Place-specific computing is proposed as a new approach that focuses on shaping interactions mediated by digital artifacts situated within and tailored to particular physical locations. It aims to utilize place-specific resources to enhance users' experiences of those places. The document outlines this concept and discusses pilot studies in four countries that suggest it represents a new design genre focused on how context influences usability and can become the subject of interactions. It expresses an alternative to ubiquitous technology that is not grounded in particular places.
