- The reality is that there are 16 manufacturers of professional machines in Europe, 7 in China, 5 in the US, and 2 in Japan – not to mention the more than 100 companies and teams making personal 3d printers, with several generating revenues of $1 million or more wihtin a year of launch. (Wohlers, 2013)
- The VI is an alliance of regions that want to impact the European innovation and industrial policies for new growth. It is composed of 21 partner regions at this moment, that all share the ambition to use smart specialisation strategies for supporting entrepreuneurship and innovation driven clusters to develop new industrial activities in the regions across Europe.
- The Industrial Policy Communication of the Commission of January, announced the development of thematic Smart Specialisation Platforms to link regional smart specialisation strategies with the six European priority domains of industrial policy (Markets for advanced manufacturing and technologies for clean production; Markets for key enabling technologies; Bio-based product market; Sustainable industrial policy, construction and raw materials; Clean vehicles and vessels; Smart grids and digital infrastructure) The Vanguard Initiative proposed the EC to start a pilot SSP for Advanced Manufacturing, based on the commitment of its partners to engage in interregional collaboration around European priorities, for exploring the opportunities of demonstrating and piloting activities using complementarities in their smart specialisation strategies. The first step was to develop a methodology based on mapping and matching these complementarities for common objectives, involving experts from industry-led platforms and clusters. This is applied to three more specific themes. Flanders and South-Netherlands, supported by Norte, proposed to work on a European network for 3D-prining solutions to show-case the role of regions, clusters and smart specialisation in advancing the deployment of the emergent industry of 3D-printing and co-develop the necessary support mechanisms to accelerate the go-to-market. Networked demonstrators can create spillovers that enhance the quick upscaling of local niches to European-wide industries and markets. In order to prepare a design for such a network a questionnaire is used to assemble expert knowledge about the potential and needs of the regions and prepare contacts to explore cooperation.
