– We have “confidence of entrance” into the holy places
 παρρηςία historically referred to the “boldness of speech”
that was the right exercised in the Greek polis by the free citizen

freedom from fear of consequence
 Indicates immunity as “boundary-crossers” / “priests in

 The author of Hebrews is careful not to say explicitly that we
function “as priests” (cf. 10:11 – λειτουργία) but employs
terminology to indicate that all in which we now engage may
be rightly considered spiritual service (λατρεύω – 9:14)

13. As this climactic exhortation opens in 10:19-25, the author
supplies an unmistakable echo of the exhortation in 4:14-16
that precede his “long and difficult word.” He thus creates a
major inclusio around the central expository section.

– This is used “to urge some one to unite with the speaker
in a course of action upon which he has already decided”

• All in middle voice
– The subject performs or experiences the action expressed
by the verb in such a way that emphasizes the subject’s
participation. It may be said that the subject acts “with a
vested interest.” … The active voice emphasizes the action
of the verb; the middle emphasizes the actor [subject] of
the verb (Wallace)

15. He gives 3 exhortations:
• Let us draw near (cf. Exo 20:21)
• Together, we ought to be taking advantage of our
privilege
– With a true heart (sincere, genuine, “guileless”)
– In full assurance of faith (the certainty derived from…)
– With our hearts sprinkled clean
– With our bodies washed with pure water
Perhaps the twofold thought is just as the Old Testament priest entered the
divine presence by the sprinkling of blood and by virtue of bathing his flesh
with water, so the Christian believer may confidently exercise his approach to
God on the basis of a heart purified judicially by the blood of Christ and with a
life that is cleansed from defilement by the Word of God (Eph 5:25-26).

– Negatively: forsaking assembly (habitually/evidently-v. 39)
– Positively: encouraging one another (repeatedly)
– Emphatically: reach more for the goal the closer it gets
