BRICK — It is safe to say
that Point Boro controlled
the ice at the Ocean Ice
Palace last Friday night, de-
feating the Manasquan War-
riors 6-2.
The first period was all
Panthers as four different
players netted goals for
Point Boro. Early in the first,
Chris miller of Point Boro
scored with assists from
Kyle Johnson and Ryan Carr.
Boro’s Owen Herrington
went on to score nine min-
utes later, putting the Pan-
thers up 2-0.
With a little over a minute
left in the first, Carr, who
helped earlier with an assist,
found the back of the net
with another assist from
Johnson.
It looked like the first pe-
riod would end with the
Panthers up three, but
Matthew Transue had other
things in mind. Ten seconds
after Carr’s goal, Transue
put one in himself, giving
Point Boro a 4-0 lead for the
start of the second period.
The second period was
relatively quiet for both
teams and it seemed as
though Manasquan figured
out a way to keep Point
Boro at bay. It did not last
long, though, as John Callen-
der of Point Boro managed
to score a shorthanded goal
and further increase their
lead.
The final period opened
well for the Warriors as they
found the net early. Conor

POINT PLEASANT BEACH — The
home crowd was cheering
loudly as the Garnet Gulls
beat the visiting Keyport Red
Raiders by a score of 36-29
Tuesday evening.
The game had everyone on
the edge of their seats from
start to finish as the girls
nabbed their second win this
season.
“It felt great,” Point Beach
coach Kristen Haycook said
after the game. “These girls
work really hard to come in
game after game and lose by
20 points. They finally got
what it feels like to play in a
close game and to fight for
the game.”

POINT PLEASANT BORO — The
Panthers put on a show at
home Wednesday as they
toppled the Jackson Liberty
Lions 63-19.
Point Boro senior Lindsey
Havens had a game-high 27
points and passed the 1,000
point mark with a three-
pointer in the third quarter.
The gymnasium was
packed with parents, teachers
and students all there to sup-
port Havens on her trek to
one thousand.
Every shot she put up was
matched with a pause from
the crowd and the tension
grew as she got closer and
closer to her mark.
Struggling a bit in the first
half, Havens didn’t make a
three-pointer, but she man-
aged 16 points by halftime.
Point Boro coach David
Drew seemed to be the only
person not worried about
Havens hitting her milestone.
“She was forcing it a little
bit,” said Drew about Havens’
first half performance. “For-
tunately, I’ve had a couple
players get to the thousand
point mark when I was
coaching.”
Not worried one bit about
Havens, coach Drew made
sure to keep the rest of the
team calm as well. He told
them not to worry and to just
play their own game.
After Havens made the
shot that took her over the
mark, there was an official
timeout for celebration.
Amidst cheers from fans,
family and teammates,
Havens had nothing but a
huge smile on her face.
“I don’t think I’ve ever
been so nervous,” said
Havens after the game. “At
halftime I tried to calm my-
self down, I only had five
points to go. I just cleared
myself out and said play my
own game.”
Havens was not the only
big performer in the game as
11 different players scored for
the Panthers.
Megan Hughes of Point
Boro finished with 10 points,
three rebounds, two steals
and an assist. Emily Henn led
the team with nine rebounds
and chipped in three blocks,
two steals and two assists.
Havens also added 5 re-
bounds, an assist and a block
to her totals.
POINT BORO VS MANCHESTER
The Panthers lost a heart-
breaker last Friday when they
traveled to face Manchester
Township. Falling just shy of
a comeback, Point Boro lost
63-61 against the Hawks.
The first two quarters were
tight as the Panthers put up 31
and the Hawks put up 34.
Coming out of the half
Manchester maintained their
play, scoring another 17
points in the third quarter
while the Panthers only man-
aged 10.
With one last quarter to
play and trailing by 10, Point
Boro rallied, scoring a total of

BRICK — The Panthers trav-
eled to Brick Township high
school last Friday to compete
in the Shore Conference
Tournament. The preliminar-
ies, pre-quarterfinals and
quarterfinals were all moved
to Friday due the heavy
snowfall during the previous
week.
For the preliminary round,
Point Boro matched up
against the Manalapan
Braves, defeating them 44-30.
They then went on to face
Brick Township in the pre
quarters round and lost 42-21.
POINT BORO VS. MANALAPAN
The match began in the
120-pound weight class,
where Point Boro’s Dylan
Davies pinned his opponent
in the third period.
126-pounder Dan Nobbs
followed suit, pinning his op-
ponent in 47 seconds and giv-
ing the Panthers a 12-0 lead.
Point Boro then won the
132- and 138-pound bouts,
both by major decision.
In the 132-pound bout, Jack
Ehrhardt of Point Boro led
his opponent through three
periods. He won by a score of
13-5.
Panther Courtland Hackel
claimed victory in the 138-
pound weight class, beating
his matchup 9-1.
Joe Santomarco of the
Manalapan Braves responded
in the 145-pound weight class,
pinning his opponent after a
minute and a half on the mat.
The Braves then won the 152-
and 160-pound weight class-
es.
Jake Kaminsky won the 152-
pound weight class by techni-
cal fall, awarding the Braves 5
points, while teammate Ron-
ny Ghaida won the 160-
pound bout by decision.
With seven bouts down
and seven bouts to go, the
Panthers led 20-14.
In the 170-pound weight
class, Panther Gene Frances-
chini wasted no time pinning
his opponent in the second
period, increasing the Pan-
thers’ lead to 26-14.
But the Braves were there
to compete, so they were not
going down easy.
In the 182 and 195-pound
bouts, Manalapan claimed
victory by pin. Jake Staklinks-
ki pinned his opponent in a
little over a minute and Joe
Marano won with a pin early
in the third, giving Manala-
pan 12 team points and
evening out the match at 26.
In an intense matchup on
the mat during the 220-pound
weight class, Point Boro’s
Josh Vitale lost by major de-
cision, giving the Braves their
first lead of the match 30-26.

KENILWORTH — The Garnet
Gulls made easy work of the
Brearley Bears on the road on
Saturday.
With a final score of 48-21,
Point Beach jumped out to an
early lead and never let it go.
The match started with the
145-pound weight class,
where Zack Schaller set the
tone for the Gulls by pinning
his opponent in the second
period.
Point Beach then won the
152- and 160-pound bouts,
both by decision. Jimmy
Sherlock defeated his oppo-
nent 7-3 in the 152-pound
weight class and Kent
Napoliello beat his matchup
7-5 in the 160-pound weight
class.
Scoring the first points for
the Bears was Eoghan
Savona, who won the 170-
pound weight class by deci-
sion.
With the score 12-3 in favor
of the Gulls, Jack Baker won
the 182-pound bout and Vin-
cent Storino won the 195-
pound bout for Point Beach,
both by pins in the first peri-
od.
Trailing 24-3, Saverio Sal-
cfas, of Brearley, claimed vic-
tory in the 220-pound weight
class, pinning Point Beach’s
Forrest Gardner one minute
into the match. Unfortunately
for Brearley, they had no one
to put on the match for the
heavyweight bout, forfeiting
that weight class and losing
30-9.
The Bears showed heart
though as Rebecca Pizuto
pinned Garnet Gull Will
Jarvis in the second period of
the 106-pound weight class.
The Bears again had to forfeit
the next weight class, not
able to put someone on the
mat for the 113-pound weight
class.
In an exciting matchup on
the mat, Beach’s Jared Hoeler
defeated Brearley’s Paul Al-
fano in a sudden victory, 4-2,
during the 120-pound bout.
Beach then won the 126-
pound bout as Roddy Rupp
pinned his opponent, giving
the Gulls a commanding 45-15
lead.
Point Beach then forfeited
the 132-pound weight class
before Gull Giancarlo Crivel-
li won the 138-pound bout by
decision, closing out the
match 48-21.
POINT BEACH KEEPS WINNING
Point Beach went on to
claim its 19th divisional title
on Tuesday, defeating Key-
port High School 51-15. The
Gulls recorded four pins dur-
ing the match and won three
bouts by decision, two by for-
feit, and one by injury de-
fault.
Point Beach then beat
Monmouth Regional
Wednesday night at home in
similar fashion.
The Gulls totaled 42 team
points, while Monmouth only
managed 16. Point Beach won
by pin four times, by decision
three times, by major deci-
sion once and by technical
fall once.
Point Beach hopes to keep
their winning momentum go-
ing as they head into a much-
anticipated match against
cross-town rivals Point Boro.
The exciting matchup is
scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in
the Point Pleasant Memorial
Middle School gym.

The tension was notice-
able in the home gymnasi-
um of Point Boro High
School as all eyes were on
senior Panther Lindsey
Havens.
The crowd held their
breath with every shot
Havens put up and were au-
dibly disappointed when
her shots didn’t make it
through the net.
Against Jackson Liberty
Wednesday night, Havens
needed 21 points in order to
hit the 1,000 point mark for
her career at Point Boro.
In the first half she strug-
gled, not making a single
three-pointer, but still man-
aging 16 points from the
field — only five points
away from glory.
But as the strong basket-
ball player Havens is, she
never let her misses get to
her head.
More than four minutes
into the third quarter, two
points away from 1,000,
Havens received a pass a
foot off the three-point line.
She collected herself and
took the shot, drilling it to
the loud cheers of everyone
in the gym.
As her teammates gath-
ered her into a group hug,
chants of “Lindsey Havens”
echoed through the build-
ing and every person was
on their feet clapping for
her accomplishment.
“I’m proud of myself,” ad-
mitted Havens after the
game. “I’m happy and proud
that all my hard work and
dedication has finally paid
off.”
Hitting a milestone such
as 1,000 points is not an
easy task.
Through hard work and
dedication to her craft, and
support from coaches, fami-
ly and friends, Havens joins
10 other female Panthers in
the 1,000 point club.
“Congratulations to her.
Lindsey is the epitome of a
team player, and to see a
team player get an individ-
ual reward ... it’s very re-
warding as a coach to see
that happen for her,” said
coach David Drew after the
game.
Surrounded by family
and friends after the game,
it is easy to see the impact
Havens makes, both on and
off the court.

POINT BEACH BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Point Beach’s Gulls still undefeated in Class B CentralBY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
DUNELLEN — Point Beach
could not secure the win on
the road Friday, losing by two
points to Dunellen High
School 61-59.
It was a close game to start
as the Garnet Gulls found
themselves only down a
score at the end of the first.
Playing hard through the
second quarter, the Dunellen
Destroyers closed out the
half with the lead 26-22.
Both teams held tough in
the third quarter with the
Gulls adding 16 to their total
and the Destroyers adding 18.
Entering the final quarter
Dunellen was leading Point
Beach 44-38.
The Garnet Gulls picked
up the momentum in the
fourth quarter slowly closing
the gap. With a little over one
minute left in the game, Jesse
Hill, of Point Beach, drained a
3-pointer from the top of the
arc to tie up the game at 59.
Then, with only 31 seconds
left in the game, Dan Russo-
mano, of Dunellen, made two
free throws to take a two-
point lead.
The Gulls had two oppor-
tunities to tie or take the lead
but unfortunately missed
both shots. With two seconds
left to go in the game,
Dunellen came down with a
crucial rebound that sealed
the deal.
GULLS’ STREAK STILL ALIVE
The Garnet Gulls continue
their dominance in the Class
B Central division as they
rolled over the Panthers of
Ranney School last Friday on
the road.
Coming off the loss to
Dunellen, Point Beach made
a statement, winning 72-44
over Ranney.
Hill and Mike Rice, of
Point Beach, performed well
in the win over the Panthers.
Hill put up 17 points and Rice
added 13. Freshman Danny
Frauenheim finished the
game with 11 points for the
Gulls.
For Ranney School, Corey
Natofski and James Geraghty
each finished with 11 points.
Point Beach went on to
play another Class B Central
division matchup as they
faced Keyport high school on
the road Tuesday.
Without any trouble, the
Gulls defeated the Red
Raiders 58-35.
Hill scored a game-high 21
points with 10 of those points
from the free throw line.
Trevor Covey chipped in
with 11 points and Mike
Frauenheim added nine
more.
For the Red Raiders, Zack
Ochs finished with 12 points
and teammate Travis Alvarez
helped out with nine points
of his own.
The win keeps Point Beach
undefeated in the Class B
Central and extends their di-
visional win streak to 38
games.
Point Beach played against
Keansburg high school at
home last night, but the game
occurred too late for this is-
sue of The Ocean Star. For
full coverage be sure to check
out next week’s edition.
The Garnet Gulls will host
St. Rose tomorrow with tipoff
set at 2 p.m.

POINT BORO BOYS BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Panthers snag another win on the roadBY DOMINICK POLLIO
THE OCEAN STAR
POINT PLEASANT BORO —
Point Boro lost at home to
Manchester Township last
Friday by a score of 49-30.
The Panthers were only
able to put up nine points in
the first half, trailing 18-9 by
halftime.
Point Boro came back
strong out of the half, scoring
13 points by the end of the
third quarter. The Hawks of
Manchester Township never
let up though, adding 12 more
points to their total.
With the score 30-22 in fa-
vor of the Hawks, the Pan-
thers still had a chance in the
fourth quarter.
But for every shot the Pan-
thers managed to make, the
Hawks would make one, too.
This kept them out ahead, se-
curing the win 49-30 by the
final whistle.
POINT BORO VS JACKSON LIBERTY
In a Class B South
matchup, Point Boro defeated
Jackson Liberty 47-34 Tues-
day night on the road. The
Panthers move to 4-10 on the
season.
The Panthers played well,
securing a lead and never let-
ting it go. At the half Point
Boro was up 19-11.
Jackson Liberty came out
strong in the third quarter
putting up 11 points, but the
Panthers scored 13 of their
own, maintaining their lead
at 32-22.
With a comfortable lead,
the Panthers dropped 15 more
points in the fourth quarter,
putting away Jackson Liberty
47-34 by the end of regula-
tion.
Point Boro went on to play
Barnegat High School last
night in a game that occurred
too late for this edition of
The Ocean Star. For full cov-
erage, make sure to read next
week’s issue.
The Panthers next game is
on the road against Donavan
Catholic on Monday. Tipoff is
scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
next three matchups if they
were going to make it to the
next round of the tourna-
ment.
Stepping up for Point Boro
was heavyweight Dominic In-
fante, who won the 285-pound
weight class by pinning Man-
alapan’s Peter Williams in the
first period.
Even though Point Boro
was losing prior to his match,
Infante never let it get to his
head.
“I just knew I needed to get
as many points as I could to
keep us going and give every-
one else an opportunity to do
their job,” he said. “It wasn’t
my first time pumping up so I
knew what to expect. I knew
what I had to do.”
The calm demeanor
showed on the mat as Infante
stuck to his game plan and
quickly got a feel for his op-
ponent.
“I knew I just had to stay in
his head, wear him out a little
bit and he’d give in,” ex-
plained Infante.
As planned, his opponent
gave in and Infante pinned
him on the mat amidst cheers
from parents and coaches.
With the Panthers up 32-30,
the 160-pound bout was un-
der way. Ben Sabo of Point
Boro pinned his opponent in
the first period, putting the
match out of reach for the
Manalapan Braves.
In the final bout of the
match, Panther Blake Dale
pinned his opponent 16 sec-
onds into the first period. The
Panthers won by a score of
44-30.
POINT BORO VS. BRICK
Immediately following the
preliminary round, Point
Boro went on to face the
Brick Township Dragons in
the pre-quarterfinals round,
losing 42-21.
The match began well for
the Panthers as 126-pounder
Nobbs won his bout by deci-
sion and Ehrhardt won the
132-pound weight class by de-
cision.
Brick Township put their
first points on the board in
the 138-pound bout, where
Jack McLafferty won by tech-
nical fall, leaving the Dragons
down 6-5.
Boro’s Pete Gencarelli
claimed victory by pin in the
145-pound weight class, giving
the Panthers a 12-5 lead before
Brick Township won the next
six bouts.
Dragon Nick Wojtaszek
won the 152-pound bout by
decision, while teammates
Will Scott and Kyle Wojtaszek
won the 160- and 170-pound
bouts by technical fall. This
gave Brick Township an 18-12
lead.
Point Boro then forfeited
the 182- and 195-pound bouts
before losing the 220-pound
weight class with a pin by An-
thony Rusignuolo of Brick
Township.
With Point Boro down 36-
12 and four bouts left in the
match, the Panthers needed a
pin in every matchup in order
to tie the Dragons after 14
bouts.
Answering the call once
again, Infante won the heavy-
weight bout for Boro by pin-
ning his opponent in the sec-
ond period.
Unfortunately for Boro,
Sabo could not win again, los-
ing the 106-pound matchup
by decision in a hard-fought
bout for the Panthers.
This put the match out of
reach for Point Boro as the
Dragons claimed victory by
decision in the 113- and 120-
pound weight classes, win-
ning the match 42-21.
Brick Township went on to
lose to Toms River South in
the tournament quarterfinals
by a score of 33-27. Brick Me-
morial High School won the
Shore Conference Tourna-
ment, defeating Jackson Me-
morial 33-24 in the finals.
Coming up next is a most
anticipated match for the
Boro, as they face the Garnet
Gulls of Point Beach in the
Point Pleasant Memorial
Middle School gymnasium.
Weigh ins begin at 5 p.m. and
the match is set to begin at 7
p.m. tonight. For a full pre-
view, see page 35.

The first quarter really set
the tone for the next three.
Both Point Beach and Key-
port played aggressive de-
fense out of the gate and by
the end of the first, the two
teams were tied at 4.
The second quarter was a
bit slower for the Gulls as
they added six to their total
while the Red Raiders added
11. Going into the half Point
Beach was trailing 15-10.
The third quarter was the
most nerve-racking one of
the game with multiple lead
changes throughout. Point
Beach came out hot with a 6-
0 run to claim the lead 16-15.
Keyport then hit one of
two shots from the free
throw line to even out the
score at 16.
In a great defensive effort,
Cameron Barnes stole the
ball from the Red Raiders and
with quick and accurate ball
movement, the Gulls turned
it into two points with a
layup from Casey Sloan.
Trailing 18-16, the Red
Raiders had another opportu-
nity at the foul line. Sinking
the first shot, all they needed
to do was make the second to
tie. They missed, but Key-
port’s Caitlin Harrigan
snagged the offensive re-
bound and put up a shot to
reclaim a one-point lead.
The Garnet Gulls then tied
it up again with a free throw
and it looked as though the
fourth quarter would start
with the teams tied up.
But with seconds left in the
third quarter, Harrigan man-
aged to score from the paint
as the buzzer sounded giving
the Red Raiders a two-point
lead.
Coach Haycook provided
her players with encourage-
ment hoping to keep spirits
up as they were trailing late
in the game.
“I told them to keep fight-
ing, that we’re still in the
game, that you can never
hang your heads and you just
have to keep working hard
and be aggressive — and they
did that,” explained Haycook.
Even though Point Beach
had just finished three quar-
ters, the team looked re-
freshed and ready to claim a
victory in the final quarter.
Scoring first for the Gulls
was Barnes, taking the ball
along the baseline and finish-
ing with an uncontested
layup to even out the score.
Then in another great
show of defense, Shannon
Lane of Point Beach stole the
ball and took it the length of
the court for an easy layup
and the lead at 23-21.
Keyport responded, mak-
ing two foul shots to tie the
score once more.
With the home crowd
yelling support for Point
Beach, the Gulls answered
big with a nothing-but-net 3-
pointer from senior captain
Sam Trabbatoni.
The Red Raiders kept play-
ing hard, though, coming
within one point on two oc-
casions.
With the score 28-27 in fa-
vor of Point Beach, the
Raiders were frustrated and
one of their players was given
a technical foul, awarding the
Gulls two shots at the free-
throw line and an opportuni-
ty to extend their lead.
Unfortunately, Point
Beach’s Molly Laterza missed
both shots from the line but
as any great basketball player
does, she never let it inter-
rupt her outstanding play.
On the following offensive
play for the Gulls, Laterza
dribbled around defenders
along the baseline and put up
a smooth reverse layup. The
Raiders fouled her in an ef-
fort to stop the shot but it
dropped in the net and gave
Laterza a chance at a 3-point
play. Laterza sunk the free
throw giving the Gulls a 31-27
lead with two minutes left in
the game.
Keyport never let up but
again it was Laterza who
drilled a jumper from the
field to increase the Gulls’
lead to six, much to the de-
light of the home crowd.
With Keyport in foul trou-
ble there was not much they
could do with only a minute
left in regulation time. Trying
to stop the clock by fouling
the Point Beach players did-
n’t work in their favor as the
Gulls made the majority of
their foul shots in the last
minute of the game. The
Raiders managed two more
points before the final whis-
tle blew as the Garnet Gulls
claimed victory on their
home court 36-29.
OUTSTANDING PLAY
It was truly a team effort
from Point Beach as seven
different players scored in
the win over Keyport. Stand-
ing out above the rest was
Laterza, who never seemed
to run out of gas. She put in a
strong effort and seemed to
always be the one chasing
down loose balls and not giv-
ing up on plays, turning them
into opportunities for the
Gulls.
A true team player, Laterza
credits her team with the
win, saying, “It felt good to
win a game and help the oth-
er girls. We really came to-
gether as a team.”
Laterza did a great job of
focusing on giving her all and
not sweating the small stuff.
“I’ve been playing basket-
ball a long time, I just play
the game,” she explained.
“Bad plays, good plays, you
play the game 100 percent.”
Laterza finished the game
with eight points, three steals
and one assist. Errine Regan
added six points, all of them
from beyond the arc. Barnes
and Trabbatoni both had five
points, with Barnes leading
the team in assists with five
and Trabbatoni leading the
team in rebounds with six.
Also scoring for the Gulls
were Sydney Schifano, Sloan
and Lane with four points
apiece.
KEYS TO VICTORY
Three things stood out in
the win over Keyport: relent-
less defense, great ball move-
ment and keeping playmak-
ers in check.
Point Beach had a total of
12 steals during Tuesday’s
game. They played strong de-
fense throughout and never
seemed to lose the energy
they started out with.
“We played all four quar-
ters,” Laterza said after the
game. “We played great de-
fense and offense. We saw
our weaknesses and we
worked on them.”
On the offensive side, the
girls did a great job of moving
the ball around and getting it
into different players hands.
With seven different players
scoring for the Gulls, it made
it difficult for Keyport to con-
centrate on any one player.
This was a huge advantage
for Point Beach as the game
continued.
The Garnet Gulls also did a
good job of shutting down
Harrigan, a sizeable threat
below the basket.
“Last time we played Key-
port, she [Harrigan] killed us.
She scored 15 points,” said
Haycook. “We did a really
good job on her this time.”
While Harrigan managed
10 points in the game, the
Gulls completely shut her
down in the fourth quarter
where she didn’t score a sin-
gle point.
According to Haycook, the
big difference was switching
to a matchup zone defense
this game instead of man-to-
man.
Point Beach’s offensive and
defensive play secured the
victory for them Tuesday as
they hope to continue capi-
talizing and improving on
their strengths.
POINT BEACH VS. RANNEY
Prior to their win at home,
the Gulls hosted Ranney
School last Friday, losing 42-
18.
Point Beach was only able
to score nine points in the
first half. They also scored
nine points in the second
half, all of those coming in
the fourth quarter.
Regan and Trabbatoni led
the team with four points
apiece. Trabbatoni also fin-
ished with six rebounds, an
assist and a steal. Regan
added two rebounds to her
total. Lane added three points
to the total, along with six re-
bounds, three assists and a
steal.
Point Beach went on to
play Keansburg last night on
the road, which occurred too
late for this edition of The
Ocean Star. For full coverage,
see next week’s issue.
The Garnet Gulls will face
St. Rose on the road tomor-
row with tipoff set for 11:30
a.m.

The Department of
Environmental Protection
has announced “Fisherman’s
Walkway, a popular and func-
tional surf fishing access
point at Island Beach State
Park that was completely
destroyed by Superstorm
Sandy, has been fully
restored and is now
reopened, Department of
Environmental Protection
Commissioner Bob Martin
said. Approximately 1,000
feet of wooden walkway,
measuring about eight feet in
width, has been constructed
starting from Parking Area 7,
providing fishing access for
persons with disabilities and
other anglers on foot who
prefer more mobility in
transporting their fishing
equipment from the parking
area to the ocean. “The
restoration of Fisherman’s
Walkway will help make non-
motor vehicle fishing access
much easier for all of our vis-
itors,” Commissioner Martin
said. “We have seen incredi-
ble progress at Island Beach
State Park since Superstorm
Sandy and the completion of
this boardwalk is an impor-
tant milestone in the park’s
recovery.”
Fisherman’s Walkway has
been a popular destination
for people with disabilities,
anglers and other pedestri-
ans since it was first con-
structed in 1995 with funds
through the Americans With
Disabilities Act. Its location
within the park is south of
lifeguarded swimming areas
and north of mobile sport
fishing access roads.
“Fishermen’s Walkway is one
of the most popular assets
within the park,” said Island
Beach State Park manager
Ray Bukowski. “Obviously, it
is utilized heavily by fisher-
men and it affords a tremen-
dous access point for all park
visitors. It is also enjoyed,
especially this time of year,
by birders and other visi-
tors.”

The New Jersey Division
of Fish and Wildlife has
announced “Some 570,000
healthy and robust rainbow
trout will be stocked in
waters across New Jersey for
the spring trout season. As
many as 180,000 of these
feisty fish will be stocked by
the time the season kicks off
April 4.
In the coming months, the
Division will be stocking
only rainbow trout, a hearty
species that is resistant to
furunculosis, a disease that
has impacted brown and
brook trout reared at the
Division’s Pequest Trout
Hatchery in Warren County.
“The trout going out from
the Pequest Hatchery this
spring will be completely
healthy and big,” said
Division Director David
Chanda “The only difference
is that we will be stocking
solely rainbow trout, a much
heartier, disease-resistant
species which has not been
exposed to the bacteria that
causes furunculosis. I want
to thank all anglers who pur-
chase fishing licenses and
trout stamps. By purchasing
a license, anglers provide
funding for much more than
simply raising and releasing
trout. These purchases pro-
vide funding for critical
research and conservation
efforts.”

Fisherman’s Walkway is rebuilt
TIP OF THE WEEK
FROM JIM FREDA
When winter trout fishing,
don’t spend too much time
fishing any one hole, but
rather move quickly from
hole to hole to find a hun-
gry trout. Fishing a night-

power bait nugget is a
good way to get a bite.

SPORTS The Ocean Star FRIDAY,FEBRUARY 6, 2015 PAGE 33 WRESTLING 34 ATHLETE OF THE WEEK 34 BOYS BASKETBALL 36 FISHING TIPS 38 BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR BRICK — It is safe to say that Point Boro controlled the ice at the Ocean Ice Palace last Friday night, de- feating the Manasquan War- riors 6-2. The first period was all Panthers as four different players netted goals for Point Boro. Early in the first, Chris miller of Point Boro scored with assists from Kyle Johnson and Ryan Carr. Boro’s Owen Herrington went on to score nine min- utes later, putting the Pan- thers up 2-0. With a little over a minute left in the first, Carr, who helped earlier with an assist, found the back of the net with another assist from Johnson. It looked like the first pe- riod would end with the Panthers up three, but Matthew Transue had other things in mind. Ten seconds after Carr’s goal, Transue put one in himself, giving Point Boro a 4-0 lead for the start of the second period. The second period was relatively quiet for both teams and it seemed as though Manasquan figured out a way to keep Point Boro at bay. It did not last long, though, as John Callen- der of Point Boro managed to score a shorthanded goal and further increase their lead. The final period opened well for the Warriors as they found the net early. BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT PLEASANT BEACH — The home crowd was cheering loudly as the Garnet Gulls beat the visiting Keyport Red Raiders by a score of 36-29 Tuesday evening. The game had everyone on the edge of their seats from start to finish as the girls nabbed their second win this season. “It felt great,” Point Beach coach Kristen Haycook said after the game. “These girls work really hard to come in game after game and lose by 20 points. They finally got what it feels like to play in a close game and to fight for the game.” POINT BEACH 36 GIRLS BASKETBALL KEYPORT 29 Garnet Gulls steal the win Seven Gulls score in Point Beach’s second win this season BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT PLEASANT BORO — The Panthers put on a show at home Wednesday as they toppled the Jackson Liberty Lions 63-19. Point Boro senior Lindsey Havens had a game-high 27 points and passed the 1,000 point mark with a three- pointer in the third quarter. The gymnasium was packed with parents, teachers and students all there to sup- port Havens on her trek to one thousand. Every shot she put up was matched with a pause from the crowd and the tension grew as she got closer and closer to her mark. Struggling a bit in the first half, Havens didn’t make a three-pointer, but she man- aged 16 points by halftime. Point Boro coach David Drew seemed to be the only person not worried about Havens hitting her milestone. “She was forcing it a little bit,” said Drew about Havens’ first half performance. “For- tunately, I’ve had a couple players get to the thousand point mark when I was coaching.” Not worried one bit about Havens, coach Drew made sure to keep the rest of the team calm as well. He told them not to worry and to just play their own game. After Havens made the shot that took her over the mark, there was an official timeout for celebration. Amidst cheers from fans, family and teammates, Havens had nothing but a huge smile on her face. “I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous,” said Havens after the game. “At halftime I tried to calm my- self down, I only had five points to go. I just cleared myself out and said play my own game.” Havens was not the only big performer in the game as 11 different players scored for the Panthers. Megan Hughes of Point Boro finished with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Emily Henn led the team with nine rebounds and chipped in three blocks, two steals and two assists. Havens also added 5 re- bounds, an assist and a block to her totals. POINT BORO VS MANCHESTER The Panthers lost a heart- breaker last Friday when they traveled to face Manchester Township. Falling just shy of a comeback, Point Boro lost 63-61 against the Hawks. The first two quarters were tight as the Panthers put up 31 and the Hawks put up 34. POINT BORO WRESTLING NOTEBOOK Panthers win one in Shore Conference Tournament BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR BRICK — The Panthers trav- eled to Brick Township high school last Friday to compete in the Shore Conference Tournament. The preliminar- ies, pre-quarterfinals and quarterfinals were all moved to Friday due the heavy snowfall during the previous week. For the preliminary round, Point Boro matched up against the Manalapan Braves, defeating them 44-30. They then went on to face Brick Township in the pre quarters round and lost 42-21. POINT BORO VS. MANALAPAN The match began in the 120-pound weight class, where Point Boro’s Dylan Davies pinned his opponent in the third period. 126-pounder Dan Nobbs followed suit, pinning his op- ponent in 47 seconds and giv- ing the Panthers a 12-0 lead. Point Boro then won the 132- and 138-pound bouts, both by major decision. In the 132-pound bout, Jack Ehrhardt of Point Boro led his opponent through three periods. He won by a score of 13-5. Panther Courtland Hackel claimed victory in the 138- pound weight class, beating his matchup 9-1. Joe Santomarco of the Manalapan Braves responded in the 145-pound weight class, pinning his opponent after a minute and a half on the mat. The Braves then won the 152- and 160-pound weight class- es. Jake Kaminsky won the 152- pound weight class by techni- cal fall, awarding the Braves 5 points, while teammate Ron- ny Ghaida won the 160- pound bout by decision. With seven bouts down and seven bouts to go, the Panthers led 20-14. In the 170-pound weight class, Panther Gene Frances- chini wasted no time pinning his opponent in the second period, increasing the Pan- thers’ lead to 26-14. But the Braves were there to compete, so they were not going down easy. In the 182 and 195-pound bouts, Manalapan claimed victory by pin. Jake Staklinks- ki pinned his opponent in a little over a minute and Joe Marano won with a pin early in the third, giving Manala- pan 12 team points and evening out the match at 26. In an intense matchup on the mat during the 220-pound weight class, Point Boro’s Josh Vitale lost by major de- cision, giving the Braves their first lead of the match 30-26. Boro needed to win big in the POINT BEACH WRESTLING NOTEBOOK Point Beach wins three BY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR KENILWORTH — The Garnet Gulls made easy work of the Brearley Bears on the road on Saturday. With a final score of 48-21, Point Beach jumped out to an early lead and never let it go. The match started with the 145-pound weight class, where Zack Schaller set the tone for the Gulls by pinning his opponent in the second period. Point Beach then won the 152- and 160-pound bouts, both by decision. Jimmy Sherlock defeated his oppo- nent 7-3 in the 152-pound weight class and Kent Napoliello beat his matchup 7-5 in the 160-pound weight class. Scoring the first points for the Bears was Eoghan Savona, who won the 170- pound weight class by deci- sion. With the score 12-3 in favor of the Gulls, Jack Baker won the 182-pound bout and Vin- cent Storino won the 195- pound bout for Point Beach, both by pins in the first peri- od. Trailing 24-3, Saverio Sal- cfas, of Brearley, claimed vic- tory in the 220-pound weight class, pinning Point Beach’s Forrest Gardner one minute into the match. Unfortunately for Brearley, they had no one to put on the match for the heavyweight bout, forfeiting that weight class and losing 30-9. The Bears showed heart though as Rebecca Pizuto pinned Garnet Gull Will Jarvis in the second period of the 106-pound weight class. The Bears again had to forfeit the next weight class, not able to put someone on the mat for the 113-pound weight class. In an exciting matchup on the mat, Beach’s Jared Hoeler defeated Brearley’s Paul Al- fano in a sudden victory, 4-2, during the 120-pound bout. Beach then won the 126- pound bout as Roddy Rupp pinned his opponent, giving the Gulls a commanding 45-15 lead. Point Beach then forfeited the 132-pound weight class before Gull Giancarlo Crivel- li won the 138-pound bout by decision, closing out the match 48-21. POINT BEACH KEEPS WINNING Point Beach went on to claim its 19th divisional title on Tuesday, defeating Key- port High School 51-15. The Gulls recorded four pins dur- ing the match and won three bouts by decision, two by for- feit, and one by injury de- fault. Point Beach then beat Monmouth Regional Wednesday night at home in similar fashion. The Gulls totaled 42 team points, while Monmouth only managed 16. Point Beach won by pin four times, by decision three times, by major deci- sion once and by technical fall once. Point Beach hopes to keep their winning momentum go- ing as they head into a much- anticipated match against cross-town rivals Point Boro. The exciting matchup is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the Point Pleasant Memorial Middle School gym. For a preview of projected lineups, see page 35. Gulls gather momentum heading into tonight’s match against Point Boro Panthers SEE SCT PAGE 36 The tension was notice- able in the home gymnasi- um of Point Boro High School as all eyes were on senior Panther Lindsey Havens. The crowd held their breath with every shot Havens put up and were au- dibly disappointed when her shots didn’t make it through the net. Against Jackson Liberty Wednesday night, Havens needed 21 points in order to hit the 1,000 point mark for her career at Point Boro. In the first half she strug- gled, not making a single three-pointer, but still man- aging 16 points from the field — only five points away from glory. But as the strong basket- ball player Havens is, she never let her misses get to her head. More than four minutes into the third quarter, two points away from 1,000, Havens received a pass a foot off the three-point line. She collected herself and took the shot, drilling it to the loud cheers of everyone in the gym. As her teammates gath- ered her into a group hug, chants of “Lindsey Havens” echoed through the build- ing and every person was on their feet clapping for her accomplishment. “I’m proud of myself,” ad- mitted Havens after the game. “I’m happy and proud that all my hard work and dedication has finally paid off.” Hitting a milestone such as 1,000 points is not an easy task. Through hard work and dedication to her craft, and support from coaches, fami- ly and friends, Havens joins 10 other female Panthers in the 1,000 point club. “Congratulations to her. Lindsey is the epitome of a team player, and to see a team player get an individ- ual reward ... it’s very re- warding as a coach to see that happen for her,” said coach David Drew after the game. EILEEN A. FARRELL, RMC Municipal Clerk ($47.52) (144) (2/6) The Ocean Star POINT BEACH BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK Point Beach’s Gulls still undefeated in Class B CentralBY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR DUNELLEN — Point Beach could not secure the win on the road Friday, losing by two points to Dunellen High School 61-59. It was a close game to start as the Garnet Gulls found themselves only down a score at the end of the first. Playing hard through the second quarter, the Dunellen Destroyers closed out the half with the lead 26-22. Both teams held tough in the third quarter with the Gulls adding 16 to their total and the Destroyers adding 18. Entering the final quarter Dunellen was leading Point Beach 44-38. The Garnet Gulls picked up the momentum in the fourth quarter slowly closing the gap. With a little over one minute left in the game, Jesse Hill, of Point Beach, drained a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to tie up the game at 59. Then, with only 31 seconds left in the game, Dan Russo- mano, of Dunellen, made two free throws to take a two- point lead. The Gulls had two oppor- tunities to tie or take the lead but unfortunately missed both shots. With two seconds left to go in the game, Dunellen came down with a crucial rebound that sealed the deal. GULLS’ STREAK STILL ALIVE The Garnet Gulls continue their dominance in the Class B Central division as they rolled over the Panthers of Ranney School last Friday on the road. Coming off the loss to Dunellen, Point Beach made a statement, winning 72-44 over Ranney. Hill and Mike Rice, of Point Beach, performed well in the win over the Panthers. Hill put up 17 points and Rice added 13. Freshman Danny Frauenheim finished the game with 11 points for the Gulls. For Ranney School, Corey Natofski and James Geraghty each finished with 11 points. Point Beach went on to play another Class B Central division matchup as they faced Keyport high school on the road Tuesday. Without any trouble, the Gulls defeated the Red Raiders 58-35. Hill scored a game-high 21 points with 10 of those points from the free throw line. Trevor Covey chipped in with 11 points and Mike Frauenheim added nine more. For the Red Raiders, Zack Ochs finished with 12 points and teammate Travis Alvarez helped out with nine points of his own. The win keeps Point Beach undefeated in the Class B Central and extends their di- visional win streak to 38 games. Point Beach played against Keansburg high school at home last night, but the game occurred too late for this is- sue of The Ocean Star. For full coverage be sure to check out next week’s edition. The Garnet Gulls will host St. Rose tomorrow with tipoff set at 2 p.m. Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. He can be reached at dpol- lio@theoceanstar.com or 732-899- 7606 Ext 15. POINT BORO BOYS BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK Panthers snag another win on the roadBY DOMINICK POLLIO THE OCEAN STAR POINT PLEASANT BORO — Point Boro lost at home to Manchester Township last Friday by a score of 49-30. The Panthers were only able to put up nine points in the first half, trailing 18-9 by halftime. Point Boro came back strong out of the half, scoring 13 points by the end of the third quarter. The Hawks of Manchester Township never let up though, adding 12 more points to their total. With the score 30-22 in fa- vor of the Hawks, the Pan- thers still had a chance in the fourth quarter. But for every shot the Pan- thers managed to make, the Hawks would make one, too. This kept them out ahead, se- curing the win 49-30 by the final whistle. POINT BORO VS JACKSON LIBERTY In a Class B South matchup, Point Boro defeated Jackson Liberty 47-34 Tues- day night on the road. The Panthers move to 4-10 on the season. The Panthers played well, securing a lead and never let- ting it go. At the half Point Boro was up 19-11. Jackson Liberty came out strong in the third quarter putting up 11 points, but the Panthers scored 13 of their own, maintaining their lead at 32-22. With a comfortable lead, the Panthers dropped 15 more points in the fourth quarter, putting away Jackson Liberty 47-34 by the end of regula- tion. Point Boro went on to play Barnegat High School last night in a game that occurred too late for this edition of The Ocean Star. For full cov- erage, make sure to read next week’s issue. The Panthers next game is on the road against Donavan Catholic on Monday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. next three matchups if they were going to make it to the next round of the tourna- ment. Stepping up for Point Boro was heavyweight Dominic In- fante, who won the 285-pound weight class by pinning Man- alapan’s Peter Williams in the first period. Even though Point Boro was losing prior to his match, Infante never let it get to his head. “I just knew I needed to get as many points as I could to keep us going and give every- one else an opportunity to do their job,” he said. “It wasn’t my first time pumping up so I knew what to expect. I knew what I had to do.” The calm demeanor showed on the mat as Infante stuck to his game plan and quickly got a feel for his op- ponent. “I knew I just had to stay in his head, wear him out a little bit and he’d give in,” ex- plained Infante. As planned, his opponent gave in and Infante pinned him on the mat amidst cheers from parents and coaches. With the Panthers up 32-30, the 160-pound bout was un- der way. Ben Sabo of Point Boro pinned his opponent in the first period, putting the match out of reach for the Manalapan Braves. In the final bout of the match, Panther Blake Dale pinned his opponent 16 sec- onds into the first period. The Panthers won by a score of 44-30. POINT BORO VS. BRICK Immediately following the preliminary round, Point Boro went on to face the Brick Township Dragons in the pre-quarterfinals round, losing 42-21. The match began well for the Panthers as 126-pounder Nobbs won his bout by deci- sion and Ehrhardt won the 132-pound weight class by de- cision. Brick Township put their first points on the board in the 138-pound bout, where Jack McLafferty won by tech- nical fall, leaving the Dragons down 6-5. Boro’s Pete Gencarelli claimed victory by pin in the 145-pound weight class, giving the Panthers a 12-5 lead before Brick Township won the next six bouts. Dragon Nick Wojtaszek won the 152-pound bout by decision, while teammates Will Scott and Kyle Wojtaszek won the 160- and 170-pound bouts by technical fall. This gave Brick Township an 18-12 lead. Point Boro then forfeited the 182- and 195-pound bouts before losing the 220-pound weight class with a pin by An- thony Rusignuolo of Brick Township. With Point Boro down 36- 12 and four bouts left in the match, the Panthers needed a pin in every matchup in order to tie the Dragons after 14 bouts. Answering the call once again, Infante won the heavy- weight bout for Boro by pin- ning his opponent in the sec- ond period. Unfortunately for Boro, Sabo could not win again, los- ing the 106-pound matchup by decision in a hard-fought bout for the Panthers. This put the match out of reach for Point Boro as the Dragons claimed victory by decision in the 113- and 120- pound weight classes, win- ning the match 42-21. Brick Township went on to lose to Toms River South in the tournament quarterfinals by a score of 33-27. Brick Me- morial High School won the Shore Conference Tourna- ment, defeating Jackson Me- morial 33-24 in the finals. Coming up next is a most anticipated match for the Boro, as they face the Garnet Gulls of Point Beach in the Point Pleasant Memorial Middle School gymnasium. Weigh ins begin at 5 p.m. and the match is set to begin at 7 p.m. tonight. For a full pre- view, see page 35. SCT FROM PAGE 34

Both Point Beach and Key- port played aggressive de- fense out of the gate and by the end of the first, the two teams were tied at 4. The second quarter was a bit slower for the Gulls as they added six to their total while the Red Raiders added 11. Going into the half Point Beach was trailing 15-10. The third quarter was the most nerve-racking one of the game with multiple lead changes throughout. Point Beach came out hot with a 6- 0 run to claim the lead 16-15. Keyport then hit one of two shots from the free throw line to even out the score at 16. In a great defensive effort, Cameron Barnes stole the ball from the Red Raiders and with quick and accurate ball movement, the Gulls turned it into two points with a layup from Casey Sloan. Trailing 18-16, the Red Raiders had another opportu- nity at the foul line. Sinking the first shot, all they needed to do was make the second to tie. They missed, but Key- port’s Caitlin Harrigan snagged the offensive re- bound and put up a shot to reclaim a one-point lead. The Garnet Gulls then tied it up again with a free throw and it looked as though the fourth quarter would start with the teams tied up. But with seconds left in the third quarter, Harrigan man- aged to score from the paint as the buzzer sounded giving the Red Raiders a two-point lead. Coach Haycook provided her players with encourage- ment hoping to keep spirits up as they were trailing late in the game. “I told them to keep fight- ing, that we’re still in the game, that you can never hang your heads and you just have to keep working hard and be aggressive — and they did that,” explained Haycook. Even though Point Beach had just finished three quar- ters, the team looked re- freshed and ready to claim a victory in the final quarter. Scoring first for the Gulls was Barnes, taking the ball along the baseline and finish- ing with an uncontested layup to even out the score. Then in another great show of defense, Shannon Lane of Point Beach stole the ball and took it the length of the court for an easy layup and the lead at 23-21. Keyport responded, mak- ing two foul shots to tie the score once more. With the home crowd yelling support for Point Beach, the Gulls answered big with a nothing-but-net 3- pointer from senior captain Sam Trabbatoni. The Red Raiders kept play- ing hard, though, coming within one point on two oc- casions. With the score 28-27 in fa- vor of Point Beach, the Raiders were frustrated and one of their players was given a technical foul, awarding the Gulls two shots at the free- throw line and an opportuni- ty to extend their lead. Unfortunately, Point Beach’s Molly Laterza missed both shots from the line but as any great basketball player does, she never let it inter- rupt her outstanding play. On the following offensive play for the Gulls, Laterza dribbled around defenders along the baseline and put up a smooth reverse layup. The Raiders fouled her in an ef- fort to stop the shot but it dropped in the net and gave Laterza a chance at a 3-point play. Laterza sunk the free throw giving the Gulls a 31-27 lead with two minutes left in the game. Keyport never let up but again it was Laterza who drilled a jumper from the field to increase the Gulls’ lead to six, much to the de- light of the home crowd. With Keyport in foul trou- ble there was not much they could do with only a minute left in regulation time. Trying to stop the clock by fouling the Point Beach players did- n’t work in their favor as the Gulls made the majority of their foul shots in the last minute of the game. The Raiders managed two more points before the final whis- tle blew as the Garnet Gulls claimed victory on their home court 36-29. OUTSTANDING PLAY It was truly a team effort from Point Beach as seven different players scored in the win over Keyport. Stand- ing out above the rest was Laterza, who never seemed to run out of gas. She put in a strong effort and seemed to always be the one chasing down loose balls and not giv- ing up on plays, turning them into opportunities for the Gulls. A true team player, Laterza credits her team with the win, saying, “It felt good to win a game and help the oth- er girls. We really came to- gether as a team.” Laterza did a great job of focusing on giving her all and not sweating the small stuff. “I’ve been playing basket- ball a long time, I just play the game,” she explained. “Bad plays, good plays, you play the game 100 percent.” Laterza finished the game with eight points, three steals and one assist. Errine Regan added six points, all of them from beyond the arc. Barnes and Trabbatoni both had five points, with Barnes leading the team in assists with five and Trabbatoni leading the team in rebounds with six. Also scoring for the Gulls were Sydney Schifano, Sloan and Lane with four points apiece. KEYS TO VICTORY Three things stood out in the win over Keyport: relent- less defense, great ball move- ment and keeping playmak- ers in check. Point Beach had a total of 12 steals during Tuesday’s game. They played strong de- fense throughout and never seemed to lose the energy they started out with. “We played all four quar- ters,” Laterza said after the game. “We played great de- fense and offense. We saw our weaknesses and we worked on them.” On the offensive side, the girls did a great job of moving the ball around and getting it into different players hands. With seven different players scoring for the Gulls, it made it difficult for Keyport to con- centrate on any one player. This was a huge advantage for Point Beach as the game continued. The Garnet Gulls also did a good job of shutting down Harrigan, a sizeable threat below the basket. “Last time we played Key- port, she [Harrigan] killed us. She scored 15 points,” said Haycook. “We did a really good job on her this time.” While Harrigan managed 10 points in the game, the Gulls completely shut her down in the fourth quarter where she didn’t score a sin- gle point. According to Haycook, the big difference was switching to a matchup zone defense this game instead of man-to- man. Point Beach’s offensive and defensive play secured the victory for them Tuesday as they hope to continue capi- talizing and improving on their strengths. POINT BEACH VS. RANNEY Prior to their win at home, the Gulls hosted Ranney School last Friday, losing 42- 18. Point Beach was only able to score nine points in the first half. They also scored nine points in the second half, all of those coming in the fourth quarter. Regan and Trabbatoni led the team with four points apiece. Trabbatoni also fin- ished with six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Regan added two rebounds to her total. Lane added three points to the total, along with six re- bounds, three assists and a steal. Point Beach went on to play Keansburg last night on the road, which occurred too late for this edition of The Ocean Star. For full coverage, see next week’s issue. The Garnet Gulls will face St. Rose on the road tomor- row with tipoff set for 11:30 a.m. Dominick Pollio covers sports for The Ocean Star. WWW.STARNEWSGROUP.COMPAGE 38 THEOCEAN STAR FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2015 SPORTS The Department of Environmental Protection has announced “Fisherman’s Walkway, a popular and func- tional surf fishing access point at Island Beach State Park that was completely destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, has been fully restored and is now reopened, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin said. Approximately 1,000 feet of wooden walkway, measuring about eight feet in width, has been constructed starting from Parking Area 7, providing fishing access for persons with disabilities and other anglers on foot who prefer more mobility in transporting their fishing equipment from the parking area to the ocean. “The restoration of Fisherman’s Walkway will help make non- motor vehicle fishing access much easier for all of our vis- itors,” Commissioner Martin said. “We have seen incredi- ble progress at Island Beach State Park since Superstorm Sandy and the completion of this boardwalk is an impor- tant milestone in the park’s recovery.” Fisherman’s Walkway has been a popular destination for people with disabilities, anglers and other pedestri- ans since it was first con- structed in 1995 with funds through the Americans With Disabilities Act. Its location within the park is south of lifeguarded swimming areas and north of mobile sport fishing access roads. “Fishermen’s Walkway is one of the most popular assets within the park,” said Island Beach State Park manager Ray Bukowski. “Obviously, it is utilized heavily by fisher- men and it affords a tremen- dous access point for all park visitors. It is also enjoyed, especially this time of year, by birders and other visi- tors.” The Progressive Insurance Atlantic City Boat Show is now taking place and will run through Sunday at the Atlantic City Convention Center. Beyond the fun of seeing hundreds of new boats at the Show, attendees can take advantage of incred- ible educational opportuni- ties like the all-new Progressive Boat School, meet fishing stars like Wicked Tuna Captain TJ Ott, and support “Let Us Eat Please,” a local nonprofit organization that helps deliv- er meals to kids in need. Whiting every Friday at 6 a.m.” The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced “Some 570,000 healthy and robust rainbow trout will be stocked in waters across New Jersey for the spring trout season. As many as 180,000 of these feisty fish will be stocked by the time the season kicks off April 4. In the coming months, the Division will be stocking only rainbow trout, a hearty species that is resistant to furunculosis, a disease that has impacted brown and brook trout reared at the Division’s Pequest Trout Hatchery in Warren County. “The trout going out from the Pequest Hatchery this spring will be completely healthy and big,” said Division Director David Chanda “The only difference is that we will be stocking solely rainbow trout, a much heartier, disease-resistant species which has not been exposed to the bacteria that causes furunculosis. I want to thank all anglers who pur- chase fishing licenses and trout stamps. By purchasing a license, anglers provide funding for much more than simply raising and releasing trout. These purchases pro- vide funding for critical research and conservation efforts.” Jim Freda covers fishing for Star News Group. He can be emailed at jimfre- da@optonline.net.
