3. What is Dowsing
• Dousing is to throw water on something, such
as dousing a fire.
• Dowsing is the action of a person called
the dowser using a rod, stick or other device
called a dowsing rod, dowsing stick,
doodlebug (when used to locate oil)
or divining rod to locate such things as
underground water, hidden metal, buried
treasure, oil, lost persons or golf balls, etc.
Since dowsing is not based upon any known
scientific or empirical laws or forces of
nature, it should be considered a type of
divination.
3
4. History of Dowsing
• The Ancient art of dowsing has been practiced throughout millennia,
although the names used to identify it may have changed in
different cultures and eras, the techniques have not.
• In this vein, in 1949, a party of French explorers (while searching for
evidence of lost civilizations in the Atlas Mts. of North Africa)
stumbled upon a massive system of caverns known as the Tassili
Caves, wherein many of the walls were covered with marvellous
pre-historic paintings.
• During several research journeys to Egypt and the Middle East, I
have photographed etchings on 4000 year old temple walls of
pharaohs holding devices in their hands resembling dowsing
tools. Cairo Museum is holding ceramic pendulums which have
been removed from thousand-year old tombs.
• In China, there is an etching of Chinese Emperor Yu who ruled China
2500 years ago, and in his hands he holds a rather bulky turn-
pronged device that resembles a dowsing device.
• The Jews learned the ancient art from their captors and in the Old
Testament Prophet Hozea wrote: "They now consult their pieces of
wood then the wand makes pronouncements from them!"
• The historical records of Greece refer to dowsing and the art was
widely practiced on the Island of Crete, as early as 400 BC.
4
5. Other types of Dowsing
• The method of dowsing used by Barthelemey Bléton to
illustrate his ability to the priests. The stick revolved rapidly
in his fingers when over water. This was not his usual way,
for he needed no device. He merely sensed the presence of
water.
• Map dowsing with a pendulum, or "information dowsing."
This ancient method of question-and-answer dowsing is also
the tool of the medical dowser.
• A late eighteenth century French dowser. The bent twig
twisted in his hands when over water.
• Dowsing with a "wand." The arrows indicate two precise
movements. The stick generally a freshly cut green "whip,"
waves up and down while dowsing. The action becomes
violent over water. As it moves in the vertical pattern it also
bends to the right or left to guide the dowser to the water
find.

6. What is Pendulum Dowsing
• Pendulum dowsing has also been called "divining" for its
ability to provide information and predict the future.
• The term "pendulum dowsing" is often used to refer to the
search for specific targets, while the term "pendulum
divining" is most often used in reference to seeking precise
information.
• A pendulum of crystal, metal or other materials suspended
on a chain is sometimes used in divination and dowsing.
• A pendulum is a symmetrical, weighted object that is hung
from a single chain or cord. It’s never made of a magnetic
substance, but is often a crystal. It’s also possible to use
objects such as a favourite trinket, a bead, a metal ball or
even a key.
• The pendulum is a very simple tool and one that lets the
user tune in to their intuitive powers. The pendulum acts as
a receiver and transmitter of information, and moves in
different ways in response to questions.
• In the practice of radiesthesia, a pendulum is used for
medical diagnosis.
6
7. Using Pendulum Dowsing
• In one approach the user first determines
which direction (left-right, up-down) will
indicate "yes" and which "no" before
proceeding to ask the pendulum specific
questions, or else another person may pose
questions to the person holding the
pendulum.
• The pendulum may also be used over a pad
or cloth with "yes" and "no" written on it and
perhaps other words written in a circle.
• The person holding the pendulum aims to
hold it as steadily as possible over the centre
and its movements are held to indicate
answers to the questions.
7
8. What Is Pendulum Dowsing Used For?
• In its most simple form, you can use it to
answer questions or aid in decision making.
• Healing purposes and identifying allergies.
• To cleanse and dispel negativity in a room.
• To help you find lost objects or pets.
• To find water or ley lines (dowsing rods are
often used for this too, which work in a similar
way to a pendulum).
8
9. How Does Pendulum Dowsing Work?
• A pendulum works by tapping into your intuition and sixth
sense.
• The pendulum acts as a form of receiver and transmitter, from
your higher guidance, guardian angels and spiritual teachers.
• As the pendulum moves, you gain answers in response to
questions – it is best suited to use to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’
questions.
Some people describe the way a pendulum works as being like
bringing together the rational and intuitive sides of you (the
left and right sides of your brain).
• When these two elements are brought together, you’re able to
make decisions using all the sources, rather than just one of
them.
9
10. Where Do The Answers Come From?
• Many people wonder where the answers come from and
debate whether it’s really working, or just the pendulum
responding to the movement of the user’s hand.
• Whilst the pendulum can certainly be made to move with your
hand movements, this isn’t the case always and after practice
you’ll get to see why.
• As with any form of divination, using a pendulum involves a
certain degree of faith, belief and a decidedly open mind, as
the answers come from your intuition and from higher
spiritual guides
10
11. What Sort of Pendulum Do I Need?
• There are a variety of pendulums available for dowsing, but you certainly
don’t have to buy a posh, expensive pendulum to get good results. In fact,
the type of pendulum you choose depends in part on what feels right for
you.
• Many people choose to use a crystal pendulum. Clear quartz, for example,
is a popular choice, as the crystal is associated with clarity and connecting
to a higher purpose. Amethyst, which has a strong connection with the
spiritual, is often popular too, as is a pendulum with the calming properties
of a rose quartz crystal.
• Ultimately, whatever your favourite crystal, or the one you feel more drawn
to, can be used on a pendulum, as long as it is rounded or pointed at one
end. In fact, you could even have more than one pendulum if you wish,
with different crystals on them, to use on different occasions.
• When you are starting out for the first time, you can practice the basic
concepts by using a do-it-yourself or handmade pendulum if you wish. For
example you could use a rounded glass bead, a metal ball or even a key
suspended on the end of a simple piece of cord. When you know you want
to try more work with a pendulum, you can then upgrade to a better,
professionally made pendulum.
11
12. Before You Start Using a Pendulum
• Before you embark on having a go at using a pendulum, it’s advisable to
cleanse it first and charge it with your own energy.
• The easiest way to cleanse your pendulum for dowsing is to put it on a
windowsill in direct sunlight for a day, so it catches the rays of the sun.
• To charge it with your energy, hold the pendulum in your hands, closing
your hands around it. Then spend a short time (5 to 15 minutes will be
fine) sitting quietly, with your eyes closed, focusing your energy on your
pendulum.
• If you’d like to, you can say a pray or ask your spirit guides or guardian
angels for their support and guidance when using the pendulum.
• Once your pendulum is cleansed and charged, it’s a good idea to keep it
somewhere safe.
• Many people like to wrap their pendulums in silk or pop them in a small
velvet bag for safekeeping.

14. How To Use A Pendulum
• Once you select your pendulum you are ready to begin.
• Sit down and get comfortable. Your mind and body should feel
relaxed with no stress.
• You can rest your elbow on a table in front of you allow the
pendulum to swing free, or you can hold your arm in a
horizontal position, again allowing your pendulum to swing
freely.
• You do not have to be psychic to use a pendulum.
• It will guide itself. It is moved by either your thoughts or
someone in spirit who works through you, generally your spirit
guide.
• The first step is to get the feel of the pendulum and how it will
move for you.
14
15. Pendulums movements
• - straight line - side to side or front and back
- circles - clockwise or counter clockwise
- elliptical motion
- some pendulums bob up and down to
indicate strong action, usually affirmative
15
16. Programing your Pendulum
• Most questions asked when using a pendulum have Yes or No answers. You
must determine the direction your pendulum will take for Yes and for No.
• Hold the pendulum in your hand. With the other hand - touch the
point/bobber to steady its motion.
• Keep your eyes on the point.
• Now address the pendulum and say, "Show me 'Yes'." It will soon swing in
one direction, which could be side to side, back and forth, or circles.
• Now say, "Show me No." It should swing in the opposite direction.
• Be certain the pendulum is not being guided by the movement of your
hand or fingers.
• Once you have determine the pattern for Yes and No - you are ready to
begin.
• There are times that the answer is unknown - or the spirit needs more
information. At that time - the pendulum will generally swing diagonally or
not at all.
• The faster the movement - the stronger the energies.
16
17. Programing your Pendulum
• Sometimes a pendulum will appear to bob or dance up and down. This is
usually an affirmative response. the point is sometimes called a bobber.
• There are generally no rituals involve with pendulum use, though some
people hold their pendulum in the palm of their hand before they begin, to
'charge' it.
• When you ask your questions you may want to record the answers.
• Now you are ready to begin to ask your questions.
• Start with something simple such as, "Is it sunny today?" "Is it Monday?"
"Are you here to answer my questions?"
• Once you get the 'swing' of it - you can move on to personal questions.
• Remember to only ask a question ONCE. If you want more information -
you might want to use a chart. At this time the pendulum should be about
two inches above the chart - or as is comfortable.
• If the motion of your pendulum increases - or the circles get large - the
energy is increasing and you can expect change linked to the question you
were asking. Pursue further questions to get additional information.
17
18. Pendulum Charts
• You can create your own chart or print one from below.
• Charts can say anything - including the words Yes and No.
• They can have pictures, maps, symbols, or the alphabet, used to spell out
words much like a ouija board.
• You can even use your pendulum over a ouija board as it has letters and
often numbers on it.
• Always remember - no matter how you use this tool - is the information
you receive becomes negative - you must STOP!
18
24. Pendulum and chakras
• Stand in front of, or directly behind, the person you are working
with.
• Place the pendulum directly over their crown chakra [top of
head]. It will either swing back and forth or side to side - or in
circles.
• Next place the pendulum in front of the third eye [forehead]. If
the chakra is balanced the pendulum will swing in the opposite
direction of the crown chakra, or the circles will be reversed.
• Continue with each chakra moving downward in order: throat,
solar plexus, spleen, and root.
• If a chakra is balanced the pendulum will continue to reverse
polarities. If it is out of balance the pendulum will swing in the
wrong direction - or not at all
• You can also use the pendulum by placing it slowly a few inches
away from a person's body. The point should remain still and
move when it locates a problem. 24
