3. INTRODUCTION
• Welding is a fabrication process whereby
two or more parts are fused together by
means of heat, pressure or both forms a
joint as the parts cooled.
• There different types of welding processes
based on fusion process mentioned below:
Shielded Metal Arc Welding
Gas Welding
MIG Welding
TIG Welding
Submerged Arc Welding
• The welding is widely used for the fabrication of pressure vessels, bridges,
building structures, aircraft and space crafts, railway coaches, and general
applications besides shipbuilding, automobile, electrical, electronic and defense
industries, laying of pipelines and railway tracks, and nuclear installations.
4. Objectives of the project:
• The main objective of this project is to investigate the influence of
groove angle on reinforcement height, hardness, angular distortion and
impact strength of the weldment obtained by joining low carbon steel
plates using a shielded metal arc welding process.
• Here we observed how the properties are varied when the groove angle
is increased. Due to thermal expansion and contraction during welding
cycle will result in distortion so, this angular distortion is observed by
varying the groove angle.
• Here we observed how reinforcement height varies by increasing the
groove angle.
• The optimum value of the groove angle is to achieve the desired
hardness values to achieve a sound welded joint can be prepared.
5. Shielded Metal Arc Welding:
• SMAW is a manual arc welding process that uses a consumable electrode
covered with a flux to lay the weld.
• An electric current, in the form of either alternating current or direct current
from a welding power supply, is used to form an electric arc between the
electrode and the metals to be joined. The workpiece and the electrode melts
forming a pool of molten metal (weld pool) that cools to form a joint.
• The process is used primarily to weld iron
and steels (including stainless steel) but
Aluminium, nickel and copper alloys can
also be welded with this method.
DEFINITIONS
6. Hardness:
A material's hardness refers to the ability of a material to resist
penetration by a harder material.
Reinforcement height:
The weld height reinforcement is the maximum distance between the
base metal level and the top point of the deposited metal. The measurement of
weld reinforcement height is essential because it affects not only microstructural
properties but also the mechanical behaviour of the welded joint.
7. Angular Distortion:
Angular distortion is the
angular change in relative positions
of members extending from a weld
area. Due to thermal expansion and
contraction during welding cycle
will result in distortion.
Impact Strength:
The impact strength of a material is defined as its capability to resist a
sudden applied load or force. It is normally conveyed as the amount of
mechanical energy absorbed in the process of deformation under the applied
impact loading.
Groove angle:
The included angle between the
groove faces of a weld groove.
8. Methodology of the Project:
• Materials selection.
• Selection of welding process.
• Preparation of specimens with required dimensions and
making different groove angles.
• Fabrication of butt welds.
• Testing of mechanical properties.`
9. MATERIAL AND METHOD USED:
• In this experimental work, ASTM A36 Mild/Low Carbon Steel is used. The
ASTM A36 steel plates are utilized as the base material and is easy to weld
using any type of welding methods, and the welds and joints so formed are
of excellent quality.
• ASTM A36 steel is used in bolted, riveted or welded construction of bridges,
buildings and oil rigs. It is used in forming tanks, bins, bearing plates,
fixtures, rings, templates, jigs, sprockets, cams, gears, base plates, forgings,
ornamental works, stakes, brackets, automotive and agricultural equipment,
frames, machinery parts.
• The method used in this experimental work is Shielded Metal Arc Welding.
10. CONCLUSION:
• The results which are obtained from this project shows that how groove
angle influence the hardness, reinforcement height, angular distortion
and impact strength of welded joint.
• If the groove angle increases then reinforcement will height decreases.
• Hardness and impact strength increases with increasing the groove
angle.
• Initially angular distortion increased with increase in groove angle and
later decreased.
