The Cultural Factors Of Depression
We used to minimize or totally ignore the cultural factors in the science of depression. With the
prevalence of establishing the universal understanding in the knowledge of depression, it is crucial
to understanding the relationship between culture and depression in order to effectively assessing
and treating this disorder in all populations. In recent years, It has been established knowledge that,
aside from biological and biographical factors, socio–cultural patterns have a major impact in
prevalence and phenomenology of depressive disorders. This paper mainly discusses the role of
cultural factors that are particularly relevant in the depressive disorders.
1.introduction
Recent reviews of the depression literature have demonstrated that depression may be differently
construed across cultures. An increasing amount of evidence has supported the position that
depression is a multi–level phenomenon involving a core group of symptoms–––dysphoria, negative
cognitions, psychomotor retardation, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and loss of energy. @10 To clarify
the relationship between culture and depression, firstly we need to genuinely understand the
meanings of the two.
Actually, people always misunderstand the term "culture". It`s not a thing. It is a process by which
ordinary activities acquire emotional and moral meaning for participants. @1 Cultural processes is
flexible, including the embodiment of meaning in habitus and physiological reactions, the

Essay On Clinical Depression
Millions of Americans suffer from clinical depression each year. According to the World Health
Organization (WHO) (2017), 322 million people are affected by depression around the world.
Concerning industrialized Western world countries, it remains as the number one psychological
disorder affecting its population (WHO, 2017). Most clinicians begin primarily with prescribing
either pharmacologic or psychotherapy interventions. With billions of dollars spent in revue on
treating depression (Chisholm, Sweeny, and Sheehan, 2016), exercise used as treatment in reaction
to mental illness is often overlooked by mainstream health care professionals. However, it has been
proved by recent research exercise acts as both a preventive and reactive...show more content...
Those in the intervention group reported a higher satisfaction in their quality of life than those in the

quality of life, physical fitness level, and improve mental state. HeladГіttГr, Hallgren, Ekblom,
Forsell (2016) sought to find an optimal dosage of exercise to elicit positive responses in those
diagnosed with depression using three varying intensities. With frequency and duration kept
consistent, 620 participants, including ages 18 to 67, were randomly assigned different treatment
groups. These included (1) continuing their usual treatment, (2) light exercise like yoga, (3)
moderate aerobic exercise, and (4) vigorous aerobic exercise. The training program lasted for 12
weeks, requiring subjects to exercise 55 minutes 3 times a week. The researchers measured
depression severity at baseline and post–treatment while monitoring heart rate during every session
using a monitor. Following the conclusion of the study, the results indicated that depression severity
decreased in al exercise groups. However, the optimal dosage for exercise prescription remains
uncertain. These findings suggest that light exercise, such as yoga, were more beneficial than the
other intensities

Compare And Contrast Anxiety And Depression
There are many similarities between mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Often times, many
symptoms of one disorder stem off of having the other. For example, symptoms of anxiety can be
brought on by depressive thoughts, such as thoughts about suicide, and visa versa. The differences,
however, are far more prominent than the ways they are the same. Anxiety is a disorder characterized
by fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. People with anxiety tend to have less noticeable
symptoms than people with depression, as symptoms of anxiety are things such as physical
sensations of strong emotions of fear. Depression symptoms are more physical and noticeable from
the outside, such as lack of eating or sleep, or lack of interest in doing things. People with
depression may become...show more content...
Anxiety can also run in families, or be caused by outside conditions such as excessive stress,
drastic changes in living conditions, or abuse. Depression on the other hand, is caused by
changes in brain chemistry. However, like anxiety, depression can be caused by genetics and
medical conditions that create an imbalance of the brain's chemicals. Depressive episodes often
last for days, leaving a person mopey and sluggish, or, on the other side of the spectrum,
frighteningly up, or manic. This is when a person seems to have boundless energy and doesn't
sleep for days. Episodes of anxiety last much shorter periods of time, flaring up and disappearing
within the same day. Symptoms of an episode can include increased heart rate, sweating, and
trembling. These can be combatted with controlled breathing, while generally, depressive episodes
have to run their course. Anxiety and depression are two very different, though just as harmful
disorders. When you have one, you generally have the other It's a vicious cycle, but luckily, there
are proven ways to break it. Help is an

Argumentative Essay On Depression
"Depression is the inability to construct a future." When a person is struggling through a dark
time in their life they are unable to look positively towards the future. This may affect anyone
close to them and anyone who is planning a future with them. The theme is evident by the history
of depression, the signs, symptoms and the treatments available and the struggles depression
creates in the individual's daily life. The earliest discovery of Depression came in the second
millennium B.C. They first called this illness melancholia and it first appeared in the writings of
Mesopotamian. Depression in this time was that people were possessed with demons and a priest
had to attend to them to try and rid of the demons causing this illness. They believed depression
was a spiritual illness not a physical one. Many different doctors had ways they treated people
with this mental illness. Roman and Greek doctors believed this was a psychological and a
biological illness. They treated depression with gymnastics, massage, special diets, music and
baths one kind of bath was a mix of poppy extract and donkeys milk to alleviate symptoms. The
Greek physicians were called Hippocrates and they said that if you had melancholia you had to
much black bile in your spleen. They used bloodletting which removed blood from the body,
bathing, exercise, and dieting to treat melancholia. As the years went on people believed that the
mental illness was inherited and the people with these mental illnesses ended up homeless or in
an institute. The theories that were established from the past were very helpful to study which
treatments would work best for people today. Depression is a complex disorder which involves
many systems of the body. It disrupts sleep, changes your appetite and causes weight loss or
weight gain. Everyone experiences a sad time in their lives and has no positive outlook at the
future. This does not portray personal weakness but it also can not be something that can be wished
away. Studies have shown that the best way for people with depression to get help is cognitive
behavioral therapy which studies problematic thought patterns without the use of medicine.

Teen Depression Essay
Depression is the most widespread mental illness in today's society. Studies have found that, 1 out
of 8 teens are affected with this disease. It also predominantly affects young ladies than it does
males. (www.kidshealth.org). Teens are at a position in their lives when they must face significant
transition and peer pressures. They are trying to identify with themselves and trying to figure out
where there puzzle piece fits in society, all of which can show the way to behavioral and emotional
changes. This is also a stage when families suffer from poor communication: teenagers often tend to
keep their feelings and concerns to themselves away from their parents and other authority figures.

In teens signs of depression are much more irritable and in adults they feel a sense of sadness,
body pains such as headaches or stomachaches, Unable to take criticism and withdrawal from some
of their peers or even change their circle of friends and family members. In adults they seem to
withdrawal themselves from the world.
Dysthymia is another form of depression, but it's not as severe. This disorder can be a chronic
illness that is long lasting. Dysthymia occurs every day for one year or less in teens. Some of the
symptoms are fatigue, appetite deprivation and low self– esteem. The Primary Care Journal states
that dysthymia only affects 3 percent of the population and it is associated with functional
impairment. (www.en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/dysthymia). Individuals who are diagnosed with
dysthymia usually don't notice that they are experiencing depression. They are able to carry out their
daily lives.
Gender differences do have an effect on depression. Girls are more affected with depression than
boys because girls develop maturity earlier than boys. When young adolescence girls reach puberty
they grow to become more self –conscious of their self– imagine than boys. Boys are more
acceptable to their body change such as gaining weight or regaining muscles. In adolescence girls
they seem to always compare themselves to others and their never satisfied with their appearance.
This can lead to severe eating disorders

Depression Teresa Collick HCA/250 April 24, 2016
Depression has always been a major health issue going back for many years. Initially being called
"melancholia" it appeared in the texts of the Mesopotamians in the second millennium. It was then
thought of a demonic presence that required a priest to be in attendance. The understanding was that
depression wasn't considered a physical issue but a spiritual or mental illness. The Babylonian,
Chinese and Egyptian civilizations also believed this. Their treatment for depression was to beat,
restrain and starve the sufferer in hopes the demon would leave their body. On the other hand
Romans and Greek physicians saw depression as...show more content...
Drug therapy can control anxiety feelings that sufferers may have. Physical exercising can also be
used to combat this disorder. If one is being treated by a mental health disorder, he or she may advise
that the patient needs to change their environment. For example rather than sitting in the house all
day, one may need to force themselves to get up and go for a walk. A person that has depression may
need to surround themselves with positive people that will add support and encouragement while
they are getting treatments. Negative surroundings will only add to depression and cause one to
seclude themselves. Counseling from a psychologist is another method of treatment that shows a
good turnaround from this illness. (Psychology Today, 1995–2016). Diagnosis and treatment of the
illness today is very different from the past. Today depression is considered a mental disorder that
can be treated easily with medication and counseling. In the past, one was thought of to be
possessed by demons and was subject to beating and ill treatments. Similarities that are still carried
down even today from different civilizations are relaxation techniques like baths, massage and
exercise. Relaxation therapy can ease the stress that depressive symptoms cause. Depression is a
serious illness that should not be taken lightly. It is considered a mental and mood health disorder
that disrupts the lives of many making them feel as though they can't get through daily

Postpartum Depression Essay examples
Introduction When a woman gives birth to a child, it can be one of the most joyous and exciting
moments in her life, yet it can also be difficult and stressful. There are a range of emotional,
behavioral, and physical changes that occur shortly after a woman gives birth. These changes are
common; however, many women who experience these emotions may have postpartum depression,
with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Many women require medical treatment. Although all
causes of postpartum depression are unknown, there are many factors that can put a woman at risk.
This essay provides an overview of postpartum depression, the impact it has on the individual client,
the newborn, and the family, the physical and mental assessment...show more content...
The impact of postpartum depression causes a mother to frequently feel exhausted, emotionally
empty, and guilty because she cannot show love to her baby. The mother feels overwhelmed by
feelings of harming her baby and may lack the emotional energy to relate to her newborn, which
prevents her from perceiving the baby's attempts to communicate. Depressed mothers are less likely
to play with, read to, or even breastfeed their baby and tend to be inconsistent in their care causing a
disruption in the bonding process. Many mothers are embarrassed to get help out of shame.
Postpartum depression also has an extremely high impact on the newborn. Katja Gaschler (2008)
states, "three–month–old infants of depressed mothers look at their mothers less often and show
fewer signs of positive emotion than do babies of mentally healthy mothers" (p. 65). Postpartum
depression during the first few months of life may also cause negative effects on a child's
development including: social problems (difficulty establishing relationships, social withdrawal, and
acting out destructively); behavioral problems (temper tantrums, sleep problems, hyperactivity, and
aggression); cognitive problems (walking and talking late and learning difficulties); and emotional
problems (low self–esteem and anxiety). The family as a whole is also greatly impacted by

Depression is a very big topic to discuss. The most commonly asked questions are: What is
depression, and what disorders are related to depression? How common is depression? Is it serious?
What treatment is used? And, What kind of symptoms should a person be looking for?
Depression is more than the everyday ups and downs. You know when a person is depressed when
their sad feelings interfere with their everyday life. Depression doesn't only affect feelings, but can
change behavior, physical health and appearance, academic performance, social activities, and the
ability to make decisions that are face every day. The causes of depression are still unknown, but

People who don't think that teens could suffer from depression are wrong, depression can affect
people of any age, race, ethnic or economic group. One out of every twenty–five teens suffers from
depression. Depression can be very serious. It has been noted that depression can be linked to poor
school performance, alcohol and drug abuse, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and
hopelessness. Over the past twenty–five years, researchers have found that the rate of suicide among
teenagers and young adults has increased dramatically. Suicide is often linked to depression. Some
say that talking about depression only makes it worse. The truth is that talking to someone about
your feelings can help you realize that professional help is needed. By showing concern and
support, you can encourage someone to talk to a trusted person. Depression is treatable. Between
eighty and ninety percent of people with depression can be helped. For the more serious cases of
depression antidepressant medications and psychotherapies can be used. For the milder, less serious
cases, psychotherapy may be enough by itself. Antidepressants are used for symptom relief and
psychotherapy is used to learn more effective ways to deal with everyday problems through talking.
In most cases psychotherapy is done in ten to twenty week sessions. Therapists focus on the patients'
disturbed personal relationships. In cases where the patients' symptoms don't progress with in

Depression : Depression And Depression
DepressionMental Illness As a kid I would often get overwhelmed and say I'm depressed but not
truly knowing the meaning of the word Depression. Now that I am older I know not to use that
term so loosely because depression is a disorder that is very serious. According to the Mayo Clinic
Depression, also known as major depressive disorder is a mood disorder that causes a feeling of
sadness and a loss of interest. Depression can cause physical problems because it affects how you
think along with how you act. For example, you may not want to do activities that you normally
would, due to this disorder. Depression does not have a specific age or gender, it can happen to
anyone. According to do something.org 1 and 4 adults suffer from depression episodes before
the age of 24. Also, women are two times as likely to suffer from depression than men. In
addition, more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Phill Hickey makes a
claim that "Depression Is Not An Illness: It is an Adaptive Mechanism" in his article and I beg to
differ. In this paper, I plan to explain why I disagree with Hickey; and define depression/mental
illness. According to NAMI Mental Illness is a condition that impacts a person's thinking, feelings,
and moods. Mental Illness can also affect the way you function each and every day. There are many
different mental disorders such as Alcohol Abuse, Claustrophobia, Depressive, Panic disorder, and
Manic disorder. In addition, NAMI states that

Depression Leading to Suicide Essay
One who suffers from depression may think about and or attempt suicide because of the extreme
emotional pain and hopelessness they feel. It is during this time that one believes the only relief is
in by putting an end to their lives. The risk factors that are identified in the assessment by Dr. Niolon
state "the first thing to remember is these three things: consult– this allows for another opinion and
better care as well as to protect you and document everything you do every question you ask the
client and everyone you speak too and evaluate the client's risks" (Niolon, R. PhD., 1999). Factors
that influence suicide risk are mental diagnosis, particularly depression and substance abuse, or

However, there are those who are unable to do this and find their selves confused and lost with no
will to live. When these feelings continue to develop to the point it interfere with activities of daily
living, they then become symptom of clinical depression, a more serious illness (Lane, 2012).
Factors that influence suicide risk are mental diagnosis, particularly depression and substance abuse,
which increases risk. Age– Individuals over the age of forty–five (45) are at a higher rate. Gender
has an influence on the percentages as well being that woman tend to be more emotional,
(women try more frequently while men try more fatal means). As, well as social settings such as
marital status; (never married, divorced, newly separated are the highest rate while unmarried are
lowest risk). Weather or not there has been a history of suicide in their family, or a recent job
loss, a of these factors can and do contribute to the issue. Caucasians are at a higher risk of suicide,
than ethnic minorities. (Niolon,R. Ph.D.,1999). The role of depression in suicide with regards to
age may vary. The strongest factors in adults are life changing events such as divorce, loss of a
loved one or the anniversary of a deceased loved one (PsyWeb.com, 2013).
The role of depression in age is the risk of severe depression as one ages for example the capability
to function becomes limited. When thinking of the roles depression plays in socioeconomic status it

Depression and Antidepressants
Specifically the serotonergic hypothesis and the action of Prozac
The cause of Clinical depression has long been a mystery to physicians and researchers. Many
different theories have been proposed, but no conclusive evidence has been put forth. However, most
of what we know about depression stems from the results of certain drugs which have been
successful in treating the clinically depressed. These anti––depressants have led to the assumption
that depression is most likely due to a chemical imbalance (of neurotransmitters) which somehow
leads to the symptoms of depression. To try and write a paper on all the theories of depression would
be endless, as would be a study on all the different types of...show more content...
The pertinent findings will be explained, and their implications on future anti–depressants will be

Many clinical studies have been used to suggest a role for serotonin in the propensity for depression
or suicidal tendencies. Most of these studies measured the level of serotonin in the CSF in certain
individuals. Results established a link between reduced serotonin neurotransmission and aggression,
impulsivity, depression, and suicidal tendencies. Other data, using markers in presynaptic and
postsynaptic serotonergic neurons have shown that reduction in serotonin neurotransmission is a
biochemical "risk factor" for suicide (1).
Other clinical studies have implicated fluoxetine's effects on serotonin neurotransmitters, based on
the fact that serotonin is synthesized from the essential amino acid tryptophan. Patients taking
fluoxetine who were in remission from major depression were given a special diet which was
tryptophan–free. This rapidly decreased plasma serotonin levels, and after a short period of time (as
little as 30 minutes) many of the patients began to have signs of specific depressive symptoms.
Later, the reappearance of more general depressive symptoms were observed in a majority of the
patients. Thus it was shown that fluoxetine has a profound effect on the neurotransmitter serotonin,
and decreased

What causes depression? The main cause of depression is stress. Some teens stress over trying to
achieve academic success, while others might stress about their family and home life. Bullying can
also be a major cause of depression. Being bullied or teased will cause their self–esteem to lower and
inflict a feeling of being inferior to others. Other causes or depression could be problems in their
personal life such as break ups or fights with friends. The maximum amount of mental, physical,
and emotional distress one can experiences to become depressed can vary from person to person.
How does it affect their school performance? Two of the more common symptoms of depression
are lack of focus, and an inability to concentrate for extended periods of time (Martin). This can
cause a drop in ones grades and decrease participation in group projects or presentations. For
some, their depression could be bad enough to where it is hard for them to get out of bed to go to
school, causing more absences. Some may get themselves in to trouble more often. Depression can
also make them isolate themselves from other students and teachers. As a teen said in an interview,
"I used to be an excellent student, always got 100's. I got depression, and they all went down. I was
so distracted. I was so confused. I wanted to rebel. I felt horrible."

I chose this topic because it occurs much too often. I witness it myself. Of my friends, whom I

from unstable families. I definitely think that this factor may influence depression because I
know for a fact that they feel abandoned by one or both parents. It is horrible to think, but
depression is a popular problem. Another reason as to why I chose this topic is because as often
as it occurs, it needs more attention. Teachers, parents, family, and friends need to be aware of
the warning signs so that the problem can be dealt with before it progresses. I chose East

How Depression Affects Adolescents
Conclusion
Depression is a serious mental illness that severely affects adolescents and can be linked strongly to
Higgins, Self–discrepancy theory and the inconsistencies that occur from internal and external
environments. In order to truly understand the extent to which depression affects adolescents and the
community further studies need to be undertaken. Areas involving adolescents are significantly
lacking and therefore tools to resolve discrepancies are limited. Furthermore, there is little research in
depression amongst gender differences (males and females) however, we know that women are more
likely to have the mental illness. Currents studies present the idea that discrepancies causing

Depression is a very important topic in psychology because there have been many negative outcomes
because of it. "Each year, depression affects 5–8 percent of adults in the United States. This means
that about 25 million Americans will have an episode of major depression this year alone.
Depression occurs 70 percent more frequently in women than in men for reasons that are not fully
understood. Without treatment, the frequency and severity of these symptoms tend to increase over
time" (Depression). If left untreated, depression can escalate and lead to serious interruptions in a
person's daily functioning. It is a statistical fact that every forty seconds, someone commits suicide.
Over the years, the stigma of depression has somewhat decreases but, is still a greatly induced
issue. Because mental illness has a lot of stigmas on depression and other disorders, there is a huge
issue on people getting the help that they need. In the olden days, the term depression was never
really used. People didn't really understand what it was all about and continued there every day lives
in a negative mental state. Now that people are coming out with this disease, unless they are talking
to a mental health professional or someone who is going through the same situation, depression is

Depression Essay Conclusion

  • 1. The Cultural Factors Of Depression We used to minimize or totally ignore the cultural factors in the science of depression. With the prevalence of establishing the universal understanding in the knowledge of depression, it is crucial to understanding the relationship between culture and depression in order to effectively assessing and treating this disorder in all populations. In recent years, It has been established knowledge that, aside from biological and biographical factors, socio–cultural patterns have a major impact in prevalence and phenomenology of depressive disorders. This paper mainly discusses the role of cultural factors that are particularly relevant in the depressive disorders. 1.introduction Recent reviews of the depression literature have demonstrated that depression may be differently construed across cultures. An increasing amount of evidence has supported the position that depression is a multi–level phenomenon involving a core group of symptoms–––dysphoria, negative cognitions, psychomotor retardation, sleep disturbance, fatigue, and loss of energy. @10 To clarify the relationship between culture and depression, firstly we need to genuinely understand the meanings of the two. Actually, people always misunderstand the term "culture". It`s not a thing. It is a process by which ordinary activities acquire emotional and moral meaning for participants. @1 Cultural processes is flexible, including the embodiment of meaning in habitus and physiological reactions, the understanding of what is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay On Clinical Depression Millions of Americans suffer from clinical depression each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2017), 322 million people are affected by depression around the world. Concerning industrialized Western world countries, it remains as the number one psychological disorder affecting its population (WHO, 2017). Most clinicians begin primarily with prescribing either pharmacologic or psychotherapy interventions. With billions of dollars spent in revue on treating depression (Chisholm, Sweeny, and Sheehan, 2016), exercise used as treatment in reaction to mental illness is often overlooked by mainstream health care professionals. However, it has been proved by recent research exercise acts as both a preventive and reactive...show more content... Physical health benefits such as an increase of VO2max and minutes engaged in physical activity. Overall, the results suggest that exercise can potentially be used to increase the quality of life, physical fitness level, and improve mental state. HeladĐ“Ń–ttĐ“r, Hallgren, Ekblom, Forsell (2016) sought to find an optimal dosage of exercise to elicit positive responses in those diagnosed with depression using three varying intensities. With frequency and duration kept consistent, 620 participants, including ages 18 to 67, were randomly assigned different treatment groups. These included (1) continuing their usual treatment, (2) light exercise like yoga, (3) moderate aerobic exercise, and (4) vigorous aerobic exercise. The training program lasted for 12 weeks, requiring subjects to exercise 55 minutes 3 times a week. The researchers measured depression severity at baseline and post–treatment while monitoring heart rate during every session using a monitor. Following the conclusion of the study, the results indicated that depression severity decreased in al exercise groups. However, the optimal dosage for exercise prescription remains uncertain. These findings suggest that light exercise, such as yoga, were more beneficial than the other intensities Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Compare And Contrast Anxiety And Depression There are many similarities between mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Often times, many symptoms of one disorder stem off of having the other. For example, symptoms of anxiety can be brought on by depressive thoughts, such as thoughts about suicide, and visa versa. The differences, however, are far more prominent than the ways they are the same. Anxiety is a disorder characterized by fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. People with anxiety tend to have less noticeable symptoms than people with depression, as symptoms of anxiety are things such as physical sensations of strong emotions of fear. Depression symptoms are more physical and noticeable from the outside, such as lack of eating or sleep, or lack of interest in doing things. People with depression may become...show more content... Anxiety can also run in families, or be caused by outside conditions such as excessive stress, drastic changes in living conditions, or abuse. Depression on the other hand, is caused by changes in brain chemistry. However, like anxiety, depression can be caused by genetics and medical conditions that create an imbalance of the brain's chemicals. Depressive episodes often last for days, leaving a person mopey and sluggish, or, on the other side of the spectrum, frighteningly up, or manic. This is when a person seems to have boundless energy and doesn't sleep for days. Episodes of anxiety last much shorter periods of time, flaring up and disappearing within the same day. Symptoms of an episode can include increased heart rate, sweating, and trembling. These can be combatted with controlled breathing, while generally, depressive episodes have to run their course. Anxiety and depression are two very different, though just as harmful disorders. When you have one, you generally have the other It's a vicious cycle, but luckily, there are proven ways to break it. • 4. Argumentative Essay On Depression "Depression is the inability to construct a future." When a person is struggling through a dark time in their life they are unable to look positively towards the future. This may affect anyone close to them and anyone who is planning a future with them. The theme is evident by the history of depression, the signs, symptoms and the treatments available and the struggles depression creates in the individual's daily life. The earliest discovery of Depression came in the second millennium B.C. They first called this illness melancholia and it first appeared in the writings of Mesopotamian. Depression in this time was that people were possessed with demons and a priest had to attend to them to try and rid of the demons causing this illness. They believed depression was a spiritual illness not a physical one. Many different doctors had ways they treated people with this mental illness. Roman and Greek doctors believed this was a psychological and a biological illness. They treated depression with gymnastics, massage, special diets, music and baths one kind of bath was a mix of poppy extract and donkeys milk to alleviate symptoms. The Greek physicians were called Hippocrates and they said that if you had melancholia you had to much black bile in your spleen. They used bloodletting which removed blood from the body, bathing, exercise, and dieting to treat melancholia. As the years went on people believed that the mental illness was inherited and the people with these mental illnesses ended up homeless or in an institute. The theories that were established from the past were very helpful to study which treatments would work best for people today. Depression is a complex disorder which involves many systems of the body. It disrupts sleep, changes your appetite and causes weight loss or weight gain. Everyone experiences a sad time in their lives and has no positive outlook at the future. This does not portray personal weakness but it also can not be something that can be wished away. Studies have shown that the best way for people with depression to get help is cognitive behavioral therapy which studies problematic thought patterns without the use of medicine. They are trying to identify with themselves and trying to figure out where there puzzle piece fits in society, all of which can show the way to behavioral and emotional changes. Dysthymia occurs every day for one year or less in teens. Some of the symptoms are fatigue, appetite deprivation and low self– esteem. The Primary Care Journal states that dysthymia only affects 3 percent of the population and it is associated with functional impairment. (www.en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/dysthymia). • 6. Depression Depression Teresa Collick HCA/250 April 24, 2016 Depression has always been a major health issue going back for many years. Initially being called "melancholia" it appeared in the texts of the Mesopotamians in the second millennium. It was then thought of a demonic presence that required a priest to be in attendance. The understanding was that depression wasn't considered a physical issue but a spiritual or mental illness. The Babylonian, Chinese and Egyptian civilizations also believed this. Their treatment for depression was to beat, restrain and starve the sufferer in hopes the demon would leave their body. On the other hand Romans and Greek physicians saw depression as...show more content... Drug therapy can control anxiety feelings that sufferers may have. Physical exercising can also be used to combat this disorder. If one is being treated by a mental health disorder, he or she may advise that the patient needs to change their environment. For example rather than sitting in the house all day, one may need to force themselves to get up and go for a walk. A person that has depression may need to surround themselves with positive people that will add support and encouragement while they are getting treatments. Negative surroundings will only add to depression and cause one to seclude themselves. Counseling from a psychologist is another method of treatment that shows a good turnaround from this illness. (Psychology Today, 1995–2016). Diagnosis and treatment of the illness today is very different from the past. Today depression is considered a mental disorder that can be treated easily with medication and counseling. In the past, one was thought of to be possessed by demons and was subject to beating and ill treatments. Similarities that are still carried down even today from different civilizations are relaxation techniques like baths, massage and exercise. Relaxation therapy can ease the stress that depressive symptoms cause. Depression is a serious illness that should not be taken lightly. It is considered a mental and mood health disorder that disrupts the lives of many making them feel as though they can't get through daily Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Postpartum Depression Essay examples Introduction When a woman gives birth to a child, it can be one of the most joyous and exciting moments in her life, yet it can also be difficult and stressful. There are a range of emotional, behavioral, and physical changes that occur shortly after a woman gives birth. These changes are common; however, many women who experience these emotions may have postpartum depression, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Many women require medical treatment. Although all causes of postpartum depression are unknown, there are many factors that can put a woman at risk. This essay provides an overview of postpartum depression, the impact it has on the individual client, the newborn, and the family, the physical and mental assessment...show more content... The impact of postpartum depression causes a mother to frequently feel exhausted, emotionally empty, and guilty because she cannot show love to her baby. The mother feels overwhelmed by feelings of harming her baby and may lack the emotional energy to relate to her newborn, which prevents her from perceiving the baby's attempts to communicate. Depressed mothers are less likely to play with, read to, or even breastfeed their baby and tend to be inconsistent in their care causing a disruption in the bonding process. Many mothers are embarrassed to get help out of shame. Postpartum depression also has an extremely high impact on the newborn. Katja Gaschler (2008) states, "three–month–old infants of depressed mothers look at their mothers less often and show fewer signs of positive emotion than do babies of mentally healthy mothers" (p. 65). Postpartum depression during the first few months of life may also cause negative effects on a child's development including: social problems (difficulty establishing relationships, social withdrawal, and acting out destructively); behavioral problems (temper tantrums, sleep problems, hyperactivity, and aggression); cognitive problems (walking and talking late and learning difficulties); and emotional problems (low self–esteem and anxiety). Is it serious? What treatment is used? And, What kind of symptoms should a person be looking for? Depression is more than the everyday ups and downs. You know when a person is depressed when their sad feelings interfere with their everyday life. People who don't think that teens could suffer from depression are wrong, depression can affect people of any age, race, ethnic or economic group. One out of every twenty–five teens suffers from depression. Depression can be very serious. It has been noted that depression can be linked to poor school performance, alcohol and drug abuse, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. Over the past twenty–five years, researchers have found that the rate of suicide among teenagers and young adults has increased dramatically. Suicide is often linked to depression. Some say that talking about depression only makes it worse. The truth is that talking to someone about your feelings can help you realize that professional help is needed. By showing concern and support, you can encourage someone to talk to a trusted person. Depression is treatable. Between eighty and ninety percent of people with depression can be helped. For the more serious cases of depression antidepressant medications and psychotherapies can be used. For the milder, less serious cases, psychotherapy may be enough by itself. Antidepressants are used for symptom relief and psychotherapy is used to learn more effective ways to deal with everyday problems through talking. In most cases psychotherapy is done in ten to twenty week sessions. Therapists focus on the patients' disturbed personal relationships. • 9. Depression : Depression And Depression DepressionMental Illness As a kid I would often get overwhelmed and say I'm depressed but not truly knowing the meaning of the word Depression. Now that I am older I know not to use that term so loosely because depression is a disorder that is very serious. According to the Mayo Clinic Depression, also known as major depressive disorder is a mood disorder that causes a feeling of sadness and a loss of interest. Depression can cause physical problems because it affects how you think along with how you act. For example, you may not want to do activities that you normally would, due to this disorder. Depression does not have a specific age or gender, it can happen to anyone. According to do something.org 1 and 4 adults suffer from depression episodes before the age of 24. Also, women are two times as likely to suffer from depression than men. In addition, more than 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression. Phill Hickey makes a claim that "Depression Is Not An Illness: It is an Adaptive Mechanism" in his article and I beg to differ. In this paper, I plan to explain why I disagree with Hickey; and define depression/mental illness. According to NAMI Mental Illness is a condition that impacts a person's thinking, feelings, and moods. Mental Illness can also affect the way you function each and every day. There are many different mental disorders such as Alcohol Abuse, Claustrophobia, Depressive, Panic disorder, and Manic disorder. In addition, NAMI states that Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It is during this time that one believes the only relief is in by putting an end to their lives. The risk factors that are identified in the assessment by Dr. Niolon state "the first thing to remember is these three things: consult– this allows for another opinion and better care as well as to protect you and document everything you do every question you ask the client and everyone you speak too and evaluate the client's risks" (Niolon, R. PhD., 1999). Factors that influence suicide risk are mental diagnosis, particularly depression and substance abuse, or Borderline Personality Disorder which increases...show more content... However, there are those who are unable to do this and find their selves confused and lost with no will to live. When these feelings continue to develop to the point it interfere with activities of daily living, they then become symptom of clinical depression, a more serious illness (Lane, 2012). Factors that influence suicide risk are mental diagnosis, particularly depression and substance abuse, which increases risk. Age– Individuals over the age of forty–five (45) are at a higher rate. Gender has an influence on the percentages as well being that woman tend to be more emotional, (women try more frequently while men try more fatal means). As, well as social settings such as marital status; (never married, divorced, newly separated are the highest rate while unmarried are lowest risk). Weather or not there has been a history of suicide in their family, or a recent job loss, a of these factors can and do contribute to the issue. Caucasians are at a higher risk of suicide, than ethnic minorities. (Niolon,R. Ph.D.,1999). The role of depression in suicide with regards to age may vary. The strongest factors in adults are life changing events such as divorce, loss of a loved one or the anniversary of a deceased loved one (PsyWeb.com, 2013). The role of depression in age is the risk of severe depression as one ages for example the capability to function becomes limited. • 11. Depression and Antidepressants Essay Depression and Antidepressants Specifically the serotonergic hypothesis and the action of Prozac The cause of Clinical depression has long been a mystery to physicians and researchers. Many different theories have been proposed, but no conclusive evidence has been put forth. However, most of what we know about depression stems from the results of certain drugs which have been successful in treating the clinically depressed. These anti––depressants have led to the assumption that depression is most likely due to a chemical imbalance (of neurotransmitters) which somehow leads to the symptoms of depression. To try and write a paper on all the theories of depression would be endless, as would be a study on all the different types of...show more content... The pertinent findings will be explained, and their implications on future anti–depressants will be addressed. Many clinical studies have been used to suggest a role for serotonin in the propensity for depression or suicidal tendencies. Most of these studies measured the level of serotonin in the CSF in certain individuals. Results established a link between reduced serotonin neurotransmission and aggression, impulsivity, depression, and suicidal tendencies. Other data, using markers in presynaptic and postsynaptic serotonergic neurons have shown that reduction in serotonin neurotransmission is a biochemical "risk factor" for suicide (1). Other clinical studies have implicated fluoxetine's effects on serotonin neurotransmitters, based on the fact that serotonin is synthesized from the essential amino acid tryptophan. Patients taking fluoxetine who were in remission from major depression were given a special diet which was tryptophan–free. This rapidly decreased plasma serotonin levels, and after a short period of time (as little as 30 minutes) many of the patients began to have signs of specific depressive symptoms.
