For students of Faith Lutheran College, Tanunda. Prepared by Faculty Head: History, Michelle Schwarz to introduce our Local Area Study. Please feel free to download and use for your own purposes.
2. The History
The Local Area Study began as
a one off competition
sponsored by the Friends of
the Barossa Library over ten
years ago.
3. The success of the competition
led to it becoming and integral
part of the Year 9 History
course and now H and E.
4. The Focus
The focus of the Local Area Study is for
you to learn about an aspect of your
Local Area through ‘original
research’. This means we look for
evidence that you have used primary
sources as well as secondary sources
in your assignment.
5. Presentation
There are many ways that you can present
your project. These include:
A model
An essay
An historical fiction
A photographic study
An historical survey
A scrap book
6. Presentation continued…
Short film or documentary
A painting
Photo story
An ap
You may have other ideas. Check with your
teacher before you begin…just in case
you are on the wrong track.
7. The Written Statement
All students, regardless of whether they
do a model or written assignment must
complete a written statement.
The written statement should be a
minimum of 300 words and should outline
(1) What you chose to research and why.
(2) The process you went through.
(3) What you learnt.
8. Sources Analysis
Just as you did with the Historical Fiction
piece, you will be required to identify
sources for your LAS.
You will complete an analysis of 5
sources using the template provided.
You can of course use more than 5
sources, just analyse 5!
9. The sources analysis will be submitted
with your final task and will make up part
of your grade.
10. The ‘actual’ project
Written projects should be between 800
and 1000 words.
Models should have a base no larger than
an A3 piece of paper.
Films and other visual forms presentation
should be between 5 and 6 minutes.
Check with Mrs Schwarz or your teacher if
you are unsure about the size or length of
your project.
11. Where should you start?
What are you interested in?
What are you good at?
What interesting historical features exist
where you live?
Ask your parents, grandparents and
friends for ideas.
Talk to your VCG teachers and Year 10
students for ideas.
12. Where should I start?
Visit your local library.
Visit local museums and tourism offices.
Talk to our library staff.
Browse through the Local Area section of
our library.
Look at some of the past projects.
13. Marking
Your mark for the Local Area Study
contributes to your semester grade for H
and E.
Your teacher will mark your project
against the National Curriculum criteria.
The year 9 teachers will discuss the
projects and marking to ensure equity
across the classes.
14. Task Booklet
You will save a Local Area Study booklet
to your ipad.
This has all the information you will need
to get started.
There are also teacher checks and self
checks along the way.
You need to submit a written proposal to
your Discussion Teacher on Monday,
Week 11.
