…but South Africa wasn’t what Gandhi expected.
Although apartheid had not yet officially begun at this
point, racial segregation and discrimination was
already prominent in South Africa.

When Gandhi arrived, he experienced first-hand how
badly Indians and black Africans were treated in
South Africa.

Gandhi decided to stay and do all he could to change
things for the better. He spent the next twenty-one
years of his life fighting discrimination in South
Africa by means of nonviolent protests.

Gandhi finally returned to India and continued his
non-violent protests in the name of civil rights. He
spent more time in jail for his resistance. Gandhi
often fasted in protest of practices he did not
believe were fair.
Gandhi fought for his beliefs for many years, and
ultimately he was successful. India did gain
independence. Gandhi became known as the father
of India because of his efforts.
7. Gandhi’s ideas of nonviolent protests have since
been adopted by important leaders in our country
and elsewhere in the world.
