The Wagner (2021) Phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics are key components of language acquisition. The goal of language acquisition is a develop respect and understanding of diverse students language. Students communication skills are important for reading, writing and math. Without communication, educational goals cannot be reached.
There are different milestones in language acquisition that is used to make sure children are on the right track when it comes down to communication. Some milestone that service providers can check when a student is age of five and six are : Has a sentence length of 5-6 words, Has a vocabulary of around 2000 words, Defines objects by their use (you eat with a fork) and can tell what objects are made of, Knows spatial relations like “on top”, “behind”, “far” and “near”, Knows her address, Identifies a penny, nickel and dime, Knows common opposites like “big/little” , Understands “same” and “different” and Counts ten objects, Asks questions for information Distinguished left and right hand in herself (LD Online, 2022).
Uses all types of sentences, for example “let’s go to the store after we eat”
These are some characteristics that educator may notice in their students. These characteristics can be mistaken for other disabilities, so its is important that the student receive an evaluation for a Speech Language Pathologist (At Home HealthCare, 2017).
Language development is supported through speech therapy, early intervention and family. All these factors give support to students that have language and speech devloment issues. Speech therapy will give a student tools to development their speech. By family reading to their children and reinforcing those tools that is given, it can help devlop students.
Speech therapy is an important part of students intervention when they have a language disorder. The process starts with identifying what area the student has a disability in. There are tools that are used tosse ss and diagnose these disorder.
In regular education and special education you want the student to feel included as much as possible. There are different strategies and tools that can be used to support students with language disorders in a classroom setting.
