Examples Of Insanity In The Black Cat
The Black Cat, a short horror story by Edgar Allen Poe, told in a first–person perspective, follows the narrator through his mental decline triggered by
alcoholism. It narrates about how his degraded rational state causes him to torture animals and kill his wife. Insanity, as demonstrated by the narrator of
The Black Cat, does not always manifest itself as permanent characteristics that consistently show. Sometimes it shows as periods of irrationality and
irritability, an inability to distinguish right from wrong, or as mad fits of uncontrollable rage. Alcohol can prompt these outbursts of rage. Because of
the events and contemplations of the narrator, we as readers can conclude that he is definitely not sane during these outbursts. The narrator is insane
because he can't have power over his own actions and is therefore not guilty of killing his wife. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does not understand the severity of his actions in the heat of the moment and only regrets them when he has calmed down and sobered up. "The
cat... exasperated me to madness. Uplifting an axe, and forgetting, in my wrath, the childish dread that had hitherto stayed my hand, I aimed my blow
at the animal..." The narrator admits, in a semi–sane position while writing, that he couldn't control himself and became disoriented in the moment. He
dreads the idea of killing his second cat after the outcome of his last cat's murder, but forgets about it due to his madness. The madness overtakes him
and makes him almost do the thing for temporary relief. His lack of control over his body is evidence that he is insane and not guilty of

Black Cat Suspense
Have you ever wonder why "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" are both scary stories? "Well the reason is that they both have the
cause–and–effect relationships of mental illness, hatred, murder, and guilt. What are the cause– and–effect relationships that "The Tell–Tale Heart" and
"The Black Cat" have that cause intense suspense for the reading audience? In "The Black Cat" the main character tells us his story in prison. In "The
Tell– Tale Heart" the main character told us this while in prison: "It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it
haunted me day and night." (Poe 1) The main characters from both stories are unknown but we know this fact about the two, they ... Show more content

So what the main character in "The Black Cat" means by "Phantasm" is that he was having hallucinations by means of guilt. In "The Tell–Tale Heart",
the main character said in a shouting, psychotic voice: "It is the beating of his hideous Heart!" (Poe 2) The main character said that because his mind
was playing tricks on him. It is the same reason why the main characters in both stories had hallucinations, they both had guilty consciences. This is the
fourth important factor in the cause–and–effect relationships that causes intense suspense for the reading audience. What did we learn from these
paragraphs? Well we've learned that the four topics in "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" are mental illness, hatred, murder, and guilt. How
important are the cause–and–effect relationships and those four topics? These four topics and the cause–and–effect relationships are important factors
to understanding why these two stories cause intense suspense for the reading audience. These are the reasons why the "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The

What Is The Purpose Of The Black Cat
THE BLACK CAT is an original sci–fi, time–travel, action–thriller. There is also a compelling and "timeless" romance story that is skillfully
interwoven throughout the script.
The script offers a thoughtful visionary and cautionary world that explores solid moral questions about changing our past, present, and future. At the
core of the plot is a fascinating and complex hero, Danny. Aptly known as the BlackCat, who can see in the darkness, he drives this story.
The plot centers on the battle and struggle over control of our destiny. Stones hold the key to changing the past and future. Danny is clearly the rouge
hero, who battles a worthy adversary in Rose, who wants to control everyone's destiny. They are compelling opponents battling ... Show more content

It should be noted that on page 61, when the story transitions to 1949, there's a jarring sense like one is watching a different film. Eventually, this
feeling fades. For the most part, the plot and series of sequences feel easy to follow until the midpoint and then around page 75. This is when stronger
confusion emerges.
One thinks the story is back to the point before Danny found the stones. The narrative description says: heading to the chateau, about to find the stones.
However, then Danny is suddenly back in the Ford with the Twins. This makes the audience feel lost. Try to clarify this.
Also, in the climax battle, when Danny is supposedly dead, the story feels dominated by Gabrielle and Frank, rather than our hero.
What does work nicely is the scene in which it appears that Danny is trying to save Rose, but he slips the ring off her finger. It's a smart and very
satisfying payoff.
On the other hand, Rose claiming she loves Danny and that he loves her, doesn't feel credible or authentic. Rose definitely is seductive, but the
dialogue doesn't fully ring true.
The ending is sweet and gratifying, although it might be challenging to convince the audience that just after Gabrielle tells him about the death of
Frank that he proposes. The issue or concern might be that the audience isn't clear on the timeline and when his death

Comparing The Black Cat And The Tell-Tale Heart
Both "The Black Cat" and "The Tell–Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe has a dark side that arises from each narrator. Both short stories start with the
reassurance of the narrator's sanity. This is especially ironic because both turn out to be completely mad. In the short stories both narrators have some
sort of trigger that sets them off and exposes there mad man tendencies. In "The Tell–Tale Heart" Poe's narrator has an obsession with the old man's
vulture of an eye. He speaks of it like a person itself while it is only just an eye upon the man's face. In the short story "The Black Cat" the narrator
portrays himself as an average man with a wife and pets living in a house. As the story plunges further there is conflict between him and his

The Black Cat Syllabus
What is one thing on the syllabus you had never read before that you're glad you had the chance to read?– In school you are exposed to a lot of Edgar
Allen Poe stories. With such a great assortment of choices I was surprised that I did not read "The Black Cat" prior to this class. I enjoyed the story
immensely. The portrayal of an alcoholic's decline turning into a deranged person was powerful. The way the animals are talked about in the story
makes the almost life like. I like the comparison of Pluto's hanging to the family house being burned down on the same night. The explanation and
cover up of the large giant cat with a rope on its neck was interesting but the new cat showing up looking like Pluto was mind–blowing. The new cat

I do not discount that reading as it clearly depicts slavery and racism. But, I think to Kill a Mockingbird would have been an excellent choice to
follow that reading assignment. I love the quote "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until
you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." I think this quote still holds true today. We all remember that in the book To Kill a Mockingbird
is about a young girl who is growing up. She has the typical life of playing, having fun, and creating friendships with people. But what is most
impactful was her introduction and having to learn about things such as life's unfairness, weak people, and people with a different skin color. To
Kill a Mockingbird" is the perfect example of racism and gender inequality. The reoccurring theme of racism depicts just how much of an impact
racism has on the daily life of individuals. The lesson we learned is that people can have kindness, sympathy and support it does not depend on your
color of skin, your social status, or public opinion. It all depends on a man's soul. I think everyone can use or hear this message no matter how old in

The Black Cat Analysis
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the many poets known for using dark imagery to further the visual content of his text. In doing so, Poe uses his narrator
in "The Black Cat" to communicate to his readers "a series of household events" in which he uses details that horrify and haunt the readers. Opening
with mystery, the readers are able to quickly infer that Poe's narrator lacks common sense and rationality and that is what causes him become
impulsive in his actions towards his loved ones. In this story, Poe writes through the eyes of an unnamed deceptive narrator who maltreats his wife
and cat and relates how alcoholism and his oblivious views led him to their murder. By writing through the eyes of his narrator, Poe breaks the
fictional barrier and creates a realism in the story which arouses his readers with the details about the murder of his wife and beloved cat. Poe's use of
dark imagery contributes to the overall mood of the story by utilizing characterization, diction, and anxiety through his narrator.
Poe develops the dark personality of his narrator throughout the story and allows the story to be told from a first person point of view which makes the
story seem realistic. The narrator includes detailed descriptions of the torturous and murderous acts that were committed in this story and by doing this,
the narrator holds the reader's attention. Poe characterizes the black cat in the story by naming the cat "Pluto" which, according to Moreland and
Rodriguez, is "...an obvious reference to the ruler of Hades" (Moreland, Rodriguez 209). The name of the cat is significant for this reason; Pluto––the
black cat, is named after a dark Greek ruler, which shows Poe wanted to characterize the black cat as an evil being. Poe illustrates the black cat as
evil by describing it as entirely black and by saying that when the cat bit him "the fury of a demon instantly possessed" (Poe 5) him. Early in the
story, when Poe first introduces the black cat he mentions an "ancient popular notion, which regarded all black cats as witches in disguise" (Poe 4),
by adding this to the description of the cat it creates a dark image which foreshadows how the narrator feels later in the story towards the feline. By

Symbolism In The Black Cat
In the short tale The Black Cat, Edgar Allen Poe expresses his hate and love for cats. With twisting words and mystical views, the tale takes place
in the 1840's. Within this classic American Literature Gothic tale, symbolism is depicted throughout with many plot twists the story is told. While
The Black Cat was written to achieve an effect of "shocking insanity" in this time period it did just that. In this first person narrative the narrator
tells of the readers of his decline from sanity and madness, all because of an obsession with two or maybe one black cat. This short story easily
achieved the effect and use of symbolism. In this tale the use of symbolizes are represented by the setting, the cat or cats, the house and his wife, all
of which are a great representation of Edgar Allen Poe's imaginary and life. In the tale the setting was a sign of symbolism. Poe represented this in the
plot development with a diverse word choice, and detailed character development. In most cases, the setting is usually indelible to a story, but The Black
Cat relies little on this element. Poe used detailed character development so the reader begins to empathize with the characters. With just enough
character information given out at the time of the horrific event the reader will feel connected. This tale could have occurred anywhere and can be
placed in any era. This makes the setting the weakest element of The Black Cat. Poe does not say a certain location of where it takes place leaving
the reader to wonder. The most obvious of symbolic references in this story is the first and the second cat that arrives in the tale and the name chosen,
Pluto. Pluto leads his owner down the path toward insanity and loss of reason (Lombardi, Esther). As Poe states in the following quote Pluto is his
best friend, why would he have killed them? "Pluto––this was the cat's name––was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me
wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me through the streets" (Edgar Allen Poe). Could
the man in the tale have been a drunken fool, or suffered for a psychotic illness. If you love an animal that much a normal human surly wouldn't

Black Cat Consequences
The Consequences Behind Bloodshed
In his short story "The Black Cat," Edgar Allan Poe uses the drastic changes in one's mind by drinking alcohol and the pressure of guilt to create an
unreliable narrator, because it can easily modify the narrator's judgement towards his cat, Pluto. Before the narrator starts drinking, he loves animals
and contain a variety of them in his house. Right after the addiction of alcohol, the narrator physically and verbally abuses his pets, which causes "one
night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of [his] haunts about town, [he] [fancy] that [Pluto] [avoids] [his] presence" (Poe 5). The narrator is
drunk and misinterprets the cat's thinking towards himself, because he imagines that Pluto intentionally

The Black Cat Insanity
In the story "The Black Cat", by Edgar Allen Poe, there is a fine line between sanity and insanity. "The Black Cat" tells the story of him having
great admiration for animals, especially his black cat, Pluto. Poe loved this cat more than any animal and had a friendship with it for several years.
He started getting more irritable day by day, but refrained from harming the cat. One night, Edgar Allen Poe was drunk, and Pluto bit his hand. Poe
then grabbed a knife and gauged the cat's eye out. Then one morning, Poe hung a noose around Pluto's neck and put him on a tree. After the cat's
death, he started seeing a cat that looked exactly like Pluto, but he was angered by it. The cat was following him around and refraining him from

Since he had a drinking problem, Poe would drink on and off and would cause him to become violent. Being intoxicated is not an adequate reason to
abuse anything. While Poe was drunk, he chose gauge out Pluto's eye out and when you are drunk, the first thing you lose is your judgment. He knew
what becomes of himself when he is intoxicated and he chose to anyway. Before he killed his wife, the new cat was making him uptight and indignant.
Instead of killing the new cat he killed his wife instead and there was no reason to. Poe couldn't control the cat's actions, but he could control

Edgar Allan Poe "Black Cat"
On the eve of his death, the man becomes very drunk and lashes out on all his animals which he loves dearly, but mostly a cat named Pluto, which
eventually he cuts out the cat's eye, and the next morning he feels remorse, and is overwhelmed by the spirit of Perverseness. And hangs the cat on a
limb of a tree the next morning. The man's house burns down. And one night while completely drunk, he found a new cat resembling Pluto, but its
fur white as snow. He brought the cat home, and out of frustration and anger and tried to kill the cat, but kill his wife instead, and hid the body. When
he looked for the cat, it had vanished. Four nights after the murder the police came and look around the premises, and all of a sudden heard a loud cry.

Which shows that the cat shows remorse, and the man's past evil deeds.
The mood of "The Black Cat" is one of perverseness, fright, and uneasiness. The narrator is clearly in sorrow and is an unreliable narrator, there is
also a feeling of suspense and action as the narrator leads up to the way they discover he murdered his wife.
The "Black Cat" has a variety of examples of mood, the black cat, hideous, hidden behind the wall, cemented in by the Narrator himself, His guilt,
self–hatred, and need for punishment are all exposed when he bangs on the wall, prompting the black cat to howl, and revealing to the stunned
policemen, the secret hidden behind the wall. The narrator describes the cat as a "Nightmare, "The cat won't leave him alone, day or night. If the man
falls asleep, he has bad dreams, and always wakes up with the cat sitting on his chest, eventually the narrator stops sleeping.

The Black Cat: Revenge of a Witch In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat", a person will read an incredulous story that unfolds into a great tale of
mystery, murder, and madness. Poe, proven to be a phenomenal author, seems to outdo himself with this particular narrative. You cannot help but
wonder who the real culprit is and if the wife's superstitions are true in the beginning. However, is it possible that there were more reasons why these
events took place? Is it naГЇve to blame the cat for this destruction of man or had it all been happening due to his rage and drunkenness? This story,

His hatred and rage could be the main side effect of the heavy drinking he was doing. As the story progressed, he was noticeably more violent and
harmful, but could this have been his reason to lose sanity? Another reason would be that his wife, rarely talked about in this book, was driving
him mad. She had a very loving and accepting character background. He had later said, "The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of
all things and of all mankind; while, from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my
uncomplaining wife, alas! Was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers." His wife never complained of the horrible deeds he was doing. She
acted like she was blind to the fact he was progressively building onto his hatred. The cat's unshakable loyalty and the wife's undying love for a
drunken man could have been too much for him. Had he been alone without them, then they could all have the possibility of being healthy. The narrator
had other reasons, besides the cat being a witch, to become violent and full of hatred towards everyone with which he came into

The Black Cat Analysis
The Tale of Two Cats The title of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" leads the reader to believe the short story is about one black cat. However,
almost in the middle of the story a second cat emerges. Are the second cat one of the nine lives of the first cat? The narrator seems to be struggling
with this question and considering the genre is horror, I as the reader also struggles with this question. Since the narrator hints the second cat may be the
same as the first, the reader must look at the similarities and differences of the two cats; such as, they both loved the narrator, both are missing an eye,
and the cats have a difference in the color of their fur. In the short story, both cats follow the narrator around the house. The ... Show more content on

When the narrator looked at the cat or thought of what he had done, he would only become more infuriated and one day he finished the job by
hanging the cat in a tree. The second cat was missing an eye when the narrator found him. He found the second cat in one of the establishments he
frequented to drink his alcohol. The morning after the narrator brought the second cat home he discovered, "like Pluto, it had also been deprived
of one of its eyes" (Poe). No one knows how the cat lost the eye, but it led the narrator to distain it more because it reminded him of Pluto and what
he had done to the first cat. However, the loss of the eye caused the narrator's wife to love the cat more. After looking at these similarities, we can
see why the narrator was questioning if this was Pluto or a different cat, but we also must look at an important difference. Such as, the difference in
the color of their fur. The first cat was a solid color with no other markings. Pluto, the first cat, was a solid black cat without a single white hair. The
narrator states, "the cat was remarkably large and beautiful animal, entirely black" (Poe). The wife made frequent comments saying black cats were
known to be witches. This notion of this cat being a witch because it is solid black alludes that the second cat may indeed be the same. However, the
second cat was not one solid color. When the

Comparison Of Horror Fiction And The Black Cat
To begin , one must understand what the aspect of horror fiction is. Horror fiction to my understanding is a type of writing that propel certain
emotions onto a reader. It more commonly is a piece of writing that offers the reader the feelings of shock , fear or some form of anxiety. It has been
seen that quite frankly horror stories offer similarities in the forms of brutality, charters turning from that of being stable to loosing their sanity and
lastly being provided with death of a creature, however later finding out they are in a way still alive. Horror fiction again offers suspense, fear, anxiety
and importantly shock . Poe a writer of horror fiction offers all of these qualities in his short story The Black Cat. Poe introduces us to an unknown man

The reader is subject to feelings of fear, anxiety and shock. Also horror genres generally anticipates the characters psychology. It shows how the
person can go from a stable individual to loosing all sanity which was also a characteristic offered in The Black Cat. While The Black Cat offers
the psychology of the unknown man we are also offered this particular element in Poe's The Tell Tale Heart. One can see signs of deterioration of
the narrator. He continually lets it be known that he is fine and has no symptoms of anger however his actions state other wise. The narrator also
suggest that no feelings of remorse or guilt can be noted almost as if no wrong has been done. The narrator is going through a downward spiral of
psychological matters which is an element offered on horror fiction as this allows the reader to achieve those emotions of anxiety, fear and again
suspense. Poe offers almost all elements of horror throughout his short stories without the gore and brutality which ultimately makes him a
phenomenal writer. Poe is more in tune with allowing the reader to accomplish emotion while allowing them the reader to get a sense of who they are
in terms of what frightens them and offers them

Insanity In The Black Cat By Edgar Allan Poe
Poe's The Black Cat is essentially an extended metaphor for insanity, specifically resulting from obsession, and the psychopathic complexity of
human nature. Through the narrator's reactions to and Poe's incorporation of various symbols, the struggle the narrator faces with his conscience
and moral surface. The symbols that Poe employs, especially those relating to the black cats, work together to form the convention of horror and
suspense, as well as to convey the alteration of morality through factors such as substance abuse and perverseness (Lazim 60). For example, the
color of the cats, black, is typically associated with aspects such as evil and death, both of which are embedded within the narrator and his story.
Black cats, themselves, are usually associated with bad luck and superstition as well; this idea is even alluded to by the narrator's wife, although the
narrator claims his wife was never serious (Poe 4). Furthermore, there were specific instances that occurred that related primarily to the narrator and his
mental stability, motives, and emotions. For example, the hanging of his companion, Pluto, is symbolic of the narrator's inability to accept love as a
result of his increasing irritability as well as his deteriorating stability and mental well–being.

Annotation Of The Black Cat
The visual presentation that I chose to do is the "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe. It is a combination of a two–dimensional and three–dimensional
artwork. Different types of materials were used such as wood, Styrofoam, cardboards, pom poms, etc. to enhance the visual presentation of the story.
Since the black cat is the major character in the story, I chose the color black, white, gray as the majority colors of the presentation. These colors really
blend well with the black cat. I also think that the story involves tragedy, murder, hate, and the color black represent those. There are also silver,

The black cat is a potent symbol of the human conscience. In the middle section of the visual presentation is a black cat with a mirror like eye and
a mirror like background. These materials were used to show how the cat becomes sort of a mirror to the narrator to see how he transformed
himself into a totally different person and allowed him to see the changes that happened to him. I also used black pom poms to create a real feel
(texture wise) to the cat. In the story, the narrator proclaims his purpose for penning is to clear his conscience. He is aware of his human condition
and his pain filled being. He even claims that he succumbs to the spirit of perverseness within him, as if it were a natural course. After his actions of
violence in maiming and murdering the black cat, he becomes regretful for what he had done, and in some attempt at redemption seeks out another
cat as a replacement. This is exactly what leads him to hate the new black cat so much. It is as if it was resurrected, the missing eye is an exact
replica of his first crime and the new white gallows–like patch is a mark of his evil act. It makes him more self–conscious of himself and to all that he
had done. The more the cat likes him, the more he hates it. Even as he wakes up from the nightmares, he discovers the cat as a weight upon his heart.

The Black Cat Meaning
Darkness lives within each of us. It lurks inside the deep, obscure abyss of our hearts. To escape the judgment and belittlement of others, we conceal
our true inner selves in which the iniquity hides. As the storyteller states in "The Black Cat", initially, he buried his mental monster underneath
kindness and humanity. In fact, the narrator declares, "From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness
of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions" (Baym and Levine 718). However, "through the instrumentality of the
Fiend Intemperance," also known as alcohol, he took on his naked being (719). He stripped himself of tolerance and self–control and took on anger
and hatred for the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this does not last long. In another burst of pure rage, the murderer attempts to strike the cat, but his wife stops him, and his loyalty shifts
as quickly as a flash of lightning. He "withdrew [his] arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain" (723). Frankly, the narrator's wife seemed
as if she was most likely frail and withdrawn. Therefore, it was not as if she had the ability or inclination to attack her husband in any way, so the
narrator's immediate reaction was in no way self–defense. In other words, he had no reason to "accidentally" kill his innocent wife. Moreover, after the
completion of the deed, he did not immediately run to the police, yelling, "I killed my wife! I killed my wife!" He actually "deposited the body
against the inner wall" of a cellar (723)! Yet, in order to possess intent, one must have a motive. Well, what exactly was the author's motive? Perhaps,
his motive lay in the fact that he wanted to be alone with no responsibilities and no morals. Although the passage does not directly state this notion, it
indicates that his wife stood on the foundation of right and wrong and that she represented what he no longer had nor wanted–morality.
Thus, to rid himself of something he had thrown away a long time ago, the narrator purposely murdered his wife in "The Black Cat". His

Is "The Black Cat" a horror story? Yes! When the reader reads the black cat they can tell it's a horror story. Many creepy things happen in "The Black
Cat". "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe is a horror story because the main characters insanity/addiction is an internal monster, the man commits the
crimes in creepy places, and the reader cares more about what the main character is going to do next instead of the main character as a human. "The

and that causes fights and problems. When he gets to his home he is mad so if something happens he becomes madder and hurts people, animals, and

frightened because it had a cellar underneath the house. Cellars are normal damp, dark, really nightmarish. He kills his wife in a cellar during the
daytime. He uses the cellar walls to wall up the first wife's body. The cellar was creepy and then he killed his wife there which was even creepier. It
was even creepier that the bricks in the walls were so easy to take out. "The Black Cat" takes place in eerie settings and that makes "The Black Cat" a

The Black Cat Research Paper
"Dark Romanticism is a literary subgenre that emerged from the Transcendental philosophical movement popular in nineteenth–century America,"
according to newworldencyclopedia.org." "The Black Cat" by Edgar Allan Poe is a dark short story about a man struggling with guilt over his beloved
cat. "The Black Cat" belongs to dark romanticism because of its negative word choice, dark imagery, and gory events that happen throughout the story.
This gruesome story is connected with dark romanticism because of its negative word choice. The narrator just injured his cat and is explaining
what he did to deal with the memory of it. "I again plunged into excess, and soon drowned in wine all memory of the deed." Instead of the narrator
saying that he drank a lot, he used words like plunged and drowned which have a negative connotation. Negative word choices help to get into the
gloomy mindset of a dark romantic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator is explaining how he killed his first cat Pluto. "One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of
a tree." This quote shows imagery by describing how he killed his cat by hanging it with a noose on a tree. Hanging your cat on a tree relates to
dark romanticism because it is not normal to kill your cat out of guilt for causing it pain. The narrator is talking about hiding his wife's body in the
wall. "By means of a row–bar I easily dislodged the bricks, and, having carefully deposited the body against the inner wall, I propped it in that
position, while, with little trouble, I relaid the whole structure as it originally stood." This quote from "The Black Cat" shows imagery by detailing how
he hid his wife's body in the wall. The narrator is hiding a body in a wall which related to dark romanticism because of its absurdity. Conclusively,
dark imagery helps to explain why this story is categorized as a dark romantic

The Black Cat Thesis
The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe is a horror story about a man who loses everything he once had due to his alcohol use/abuse. The story begins when
the narrator confesses his love for animals. The narrator marries a woman and introduces her to a black cat, named Pluto. The narrator begins to suffer
from violent and uncontrollable mood swings, caused from influence of alcohol. After coming home drunk one night the narrator lashes out at Pluto, he
quickly tries to grab the cat, only to be bitten. To get revenge the narrator pulls a knife from his pocket and cuts out one of Pluto's eyes. He then goes
on to blame this on the spirit of perverseness, which means rejecting what is good, right, and/or proper. Meaning that the narrator believes that in his
alcoholic haze, he is possessed and it is making him wicked and corrupt. The narrator says the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator even claims not to be crazy, but then he goes on to think and act in such a way that the reader would label him as insane. Although Poe
does not provide an explanation for the narrator's loss of sanity, Poe does hint that madness might happen at any time to any person, just like how the
narrator transforms from a gentle animal lover into an evil killer. The narrator does address the fact that he is an alcoholic, "But my disease grew upon
me – for what disease is like Alcohol" (Poe 46). Professor McMurran, a psychologist at the University of Nottingham, says that, "Alcohol reduces our
ability to think straight, it narrows our focus of attention and gives us tunnel vision. If someone provokes us while we're drunk, we don't take other
factors into account, such as consequences, this can lead to violent reactions from people who would usually shrug things off" (Alcohol and
Aggression). This would explain why the narrator in The Black Cat would have had such violent mood swings which lead him to do the insane things

Suspense In The Black Cat
In the story The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe the setting, characters and suspense are all used as elements to show horror throughout the story. The
story opens in the cell of the prisoner the day before he is to be executed by hanging. He introduces himself then tells us of what led to his
imprisonment. The story takes place at the prisoners home or tavern with his wife, birds, gold–fish, dog, rabbits, small monkey and a black cat. The
characters that influenced the horror the most were the narrator, the wife, Pluto and the second black cat. The narrator had major issues, he was
abusive, a bully and a murderer. He made his home terrible by treating everyone and everything in the house horribly. He is also writing from a prison
cell. The

The Black Cat, By Edgar Allan Poe
The Black Cat was first printed on August 19, 1843, in a Philadelphia newspaper, the United States Saturday Post. It was composed by the ever
famous, Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849). Since the composition was written during the beginning wave of the
American Temperance movement, and because of its relevance and relatable content, it can be looked at as a Temperance narrative, meaning that it
demonstrates the perils of alcohol and urges the government and society to prohibit its manufacturing. The narrative is confronted as a reluctant,
guilt–driven, confession of a criminal on death–row. The narrative is penned as a first person narrative, with an unknown narrator. The narrator has

He still blamed outer forces for the deeds. He later states that it was human nature that forced him to practice what he knew was faulty. He attempts to
win over the reader that though unexplainable, his actions should be intelligible. "Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best
judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand it to be such? This spirit of perverseness, I say, came to my final
overthrow."(Norton, pg. 697) Joseph Stark gives an explanation of the narrators reasoning in his article, "A person's choice to sin does not precede the
existence of perversity; rather, the "spirit of PERVERSE–NESS" already in the heart causes the person to sin. Hence, in essence, the narrator offers a
very traditional theological solution to the problem of motive; he assigns it to the perversity of the human heart."(Stark, Joseph. "Motive And Meaning:
The Mystery Of The Will In Poe's 'The Black Cat'.") This in pedestrian terms is complete nonsense. The narrator cannot cast away his responsibility so
easily. Sin lives in everyone. Since biblical times, humans have faced temptations of the heart. These temptations do not justify throwing in to such
affairs. Would you kill

Examples Of Deterioration In The Black Cat
Deterioration of Morals and Mind in "The Black Cat" In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat," the unnamed narrator recounts the way his life has
fallen apart due to a series of terrifying incidents he has with his pet cat, Pluto. As the story develops, his actions grow more grotesque and immoral
as he tries to rid himself of the animal. In one of these instances, a fire forces the narrator to move from his well–tended house to a smaller, run–down
building, which represents the deterioration of his state of mind. In this way, Edgar Allan Poe uses elements of setting to suggest that when people
disregard their conscience, the resulting moral and mental decay will end in their retribution. At the beginning of the story, the narrator resides in a
well–tended house, which acts as a symbol for his fairly healthy state of mind. He describes his house as his "entire worldly wealth" (139) and states
that he has a servant, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is too late, and his conscience does not survive his worsened state of mind. Thus, the inner workings of his mind, symbolized by the walls
of his house, start to break down, which, in turn, kill the conscience. Consequently, his conscience is burned into his mind as a faint impression of guilt,
symbolized by the bas–relief on the single standing wall at the head of his bed. Moreover, the use of eyes as a prop strengthens the connection of the cat
and his conscience. It is a common saying that eyes are windows to the soul, which becomes the reason why the narrator gouges out Pluto's eye. He
does not want his conscience to affect his soul, so he takes out one of its eyes to prevent it from truly seeing his soul. Even though he feels slightly
guilty after his violent act, "it was, at best, a feeble and equivocal feeling, and the soul remained untouched"

was antisocial and he didn't like people. In this story unbelievable things happen because of his imagination. He was married, he had a good wife, they
didn't have children, but they were very fond to animals, they had much love for many different animals in their home. The narrator told us in the
beginning of the story that he was going to die the next day, throughout the story he told us why.
Him and his wife had a cat named pluto many other animals but he was closest to the cat. The narrator and the cat were close, they had a bond. Then

The Black Cat Insanity Analysis
Edgar Allan Poe shows his insanity in the Black Cat through irony. The narrator says in the begining of the story; "My immediate purpose is to place
before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without comment, a series of mere household events"(1). Later readers discover the fact that the events are in
no way mere household events, buts much more gruesome and highlights the narrator's perverseness. Later, the narrator buries his wife in a very
loosely constructed wall, yet when the police come by he tells them; "By the bye, gentlemen, this – this is a very well constructed house"(5). As he tells
them this he knocks against the wall and the cat cries. This stirs the policemen and we soon realize it was not a well constructed wall as the bricks

"The

at the animal..." The narrator admits, in a semi–sane position while writing, that he couldn't control himself and became disoriented in the moment. He
dreads the idea of killing his second cat after the outcome of his last cat's murder, but forgets about it due to his madness. The madness overtakes him
and makes him almost do the thing for temporary relief. His lack of control over his body is evidence that he is insane and not guilty of

"The Black Cat" Plot
"The Black Cat" is a short and gruesome story by Edgar Allen Poe. The story is about an alcoholic man whose anger and insanity is rapidly

These crimes, he said, "had consigned me to the hangman." (Poe 7). That means, because he killed them he was sentenced to death. In a story, the
climax is defined as the highest point of interest or turning point. The climax of this story is when the narrator murders his wife and the cat goes missing.

Examples Of Schizophrenia In The Black Cat
Schizophrenia in "The Black Cat"
First published in 1843, Edgar Allen Poe's short story, "The Black Cat", has many unidentifiable motives to a healthy mind. However, many actions in
the story directly correlate with modern day schizophrenia. Recent studies have shown alcoholism, as well as cat ownership, go hand in hand with
schizophrenia.
"The Black Cat" took readers into the mind, understanding the thoughts and actions of what is assumably a schizophrenic person. Poe describes
himself as becoming "more regardless of the feelings of others" as his life progressed (4). His manner was unusual and believed demons possessed
him. The afore mentioned characteristics that Poe displays resemble the characteristics of recent schizophrenia. The national

How Is The Black Cat Insane

yard. His actions only further prove that he wasn't in his right mind when he committed these crimes.
Some people may think he was sane because he had the conscience to think it was wrong when he cut out the cat's eye. He had restraint while abusing
the cat, because he knew what he was doing and didn't want to lose control. "For Pluto, however, I still retained sufficient regard to restrain me from

The color of the spot, white,is an archetypal symbol that has a universal meaning of purity and light. This white spot on the heart of black cat two is
symbolic of the purity of black cat one's heart. The white spot changed to the form of gallows, which is symbolic of the guilt of the narrator. If you
remember the narrator hung black cat one with a noose or gallows. So basically the white spot serves a punishment inflicted by black cat two.
The first black cat, the second black cat, and the white spot are the three most important symbols in this story. Each one of these symbols
represents the evil and perverseness of the narrator. Black cat one let's the reader get a clear understanding of

The Black Cat Pluto's Transformation
"The Black Cat" by Edgar Allen Poe is about an unnamed narrator who claims to be sane, but ironically tells the story of his transformation from a
compassionate individual into a murderer. The narrator lives with his caring wife and many pets, including a large black cat named Pluto. The
friendship between the narrator and Pluto changes when the narrator heavily indulges in alcohol. His intemperance takes a toll on his psychological
well being, as it sparks in him a spirit of perverseness: doing something that is wrong just for the sake of being wrong. This force, in the same way,
allows the narrator to deal with his drunkenness through "logical" reasoning, which motivates him to murder Pluto. The narrator then invites into his
home a new cat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eventually, the thought that this cat is Pluto's successor tortures the narrator – especially because it shows him so much affection. He complains that
the "[cat's] evident fondness for [him] rather disgust[s] and annoy[s] [him]" (9). Tormented by Pluto's successor, he feels as though the cat's
presence is the consequence that he must pay for murdering Pluto. The overwhelming guilt eats away at him and ultimately drives him insane. He
feels the urge to kill Pluto's successor so he no longer has to feel this agony. As the narrator and his wife are walking down the stairs, the cat nearly
trips him. This small accident provokes the narrator to relentlessly grab an axe to kill the cat. However, he struggles to do so, as he is
unexpectedly stopped by the grasp of his wife's hand. As a result of his impetuous nature and perverse state of mind, "[he] withdrew [his] arm from
her grasp and buried the axe in her brain" (11). There is no real reason for the to attempt to kill the cat that did nothing but offer him love. Thus, it is
evident that his mind, body, and soul are taken over by an uncontrollable perverseness that causes him to lose sight of what is good or bad, and what is
right or wrong. He no longer thinks about what he is doing, but rather, his actions are "impulses of the human heart," which allow him to

Internal Conflict In The Black Cat
Black cats, animal abuse, schizophrenia, a fire and murder, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" checks all the boxes for a dark romantic piece of
literature. The focus is taken off of the grotesque details of abuse and murder but shifted towards the narrator's inner conflict. Poe's obsession with
exploring the human psyche is prevalent in this short story. Readers struggle to understand the logic, if any, behind the actions of the unreliable narrator
as he grapples with his own mind, or a supernatural force. Edgar Allan Poe combines internal conflict and symbolism to express the theme of
transformation from innocence to evil and introduce a schizophrenic mindset that cannot comprehend reality from supernatural occurrences. A descent

Edgar Allan Poe's use of symbolism in "The Black Cat" subtly hints at the supernatural aspect of the story. The "Evil Eye" which plagued the
protagonist of "The Tell–Tale Heart" makes a reappearance. Both Pluto and the second black cat have only one eye, and the narrator describes the
second black cat's "solitary eye of fire" (Poe 401) as he alarmed the investigators of the corpse in the tomb. The narrator's claim of love for Pluto and
the subsequent black cat developing into blind hatred and blame placed on them also mirrors the protagonist in ""The Tell–Tale Heart." The narrator
blames the cats for his affliction. Pluto signifies innocence, disfigured and eventually murdered by the narrator at the beginning of his spiral into
madness. Pluto's "Evil Eye" is quickly destroyed by the narrator, but is replaced with the phantasm. The phantasm haunts the narrator, appearing after
the house burns down and destroys his wealth. The phantasm also appears on the second black cat's chest, tormenting the narrator with a reminder of
his first murder. The second black cat is the narrator's shot at redemption. His similarity to Pluto and willingness to endure the narrator's abuse gave him
a chance to redeem his innocence. Once the protagonist commited the murder of his wife, the black cat gave up on him. Although the cats represent
innocence and redemption, the narrator's

Foreshadowing In The Black Cat
In "The Black Cat", the use of foreshadowing serves to emphasize the theme that sinners will be punished by justice. For example, when the narrator
visits the ruins of his house, he sees on a wall "the figure of a gigantic cat [with] a rope about the animal's neck", foreshadowing how the narrator will
be put to death for murder. Moreover, he describes the form of white hair on his second cat's chest as "the representation [...] of the GALLOWS! ‒
oh, mournful and terrible engine of Horror and of Crime ‒ of Agony and of Death!", further foreshadowing his execution. The fact that the motif of
death by hanging always comes back to the narrator and that the gallows represents to him an instrument of "Crime and Death" implies that suppressing

had a "tenderness of heart" and he was "especially fond of animals, and was indulged by my parents with a great variety of pets". The animals and
pets that the narrator speaks about are symbolic for different drugs. The propensity to addiction was introduced to him as a tender child, by his parents.

Imagery In The Black Cat
Edgar Allan Poe who wrote The Black Cat along with a bunch of other literary works is naturally a master at creating imagery as well as a certain
mood that he wants his readers to get into their minds. The mood of this story would definitely be fright and uneasiness, Poe develops this mood by
adding certain characters, events, places, and describing words to the story. Examples of these would be the black cat, murders, the cellar in the old
building, and words such as swooning to bring certain effects into the scenes. "I took from my waistcoat–pocket a pen–knife, opened it, grasped the

Examples Of Insanity In The Black Cat

  • 1. Examples Of Insanity In The Black Cat The Black Cat, a short horror story by Edgar Allen Poe, told in a first–person perspective, follows the narrator through his mental decline triggered by alcoholism. It narrates about how his degraded rational state causes him to torture animals and kill his wife. Insanity, as demonstrated by the narrator of The Black Cat, does not always manifest itself as permanent characteristics that consistently show. Sometimes it shows as periods of irrationality and irritability, an inability to distinguish right from wrong, or as mad fits of uncontrollable rage. Alcohol can prompt these outbursts of rage. Because of the events and contemplations of the narrator, we as readers can conclude that he is definitely not sane during these outbursts. The narrator is insane because he can't have power over his own actions and is therefore not guilty of killing his wife. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He does not understand the severity of his actions in the heat of the moment and only regrets them when he has calmed down and sobered up. "The cat... exasperated me to madness. Uplifting an axe, and forgetting, in my wrath, the childish dread that had hitherto stayed my hand, I aimed my blow at the animal..." The narrator admits, in a semi–sane position while writing, that he couldn't control himself and became disoriented in the moment. He dreads the idea of killing his second cat after the outcome of his last cat's murder, but forgets about it due to his madness. The madness overtakes him and makes him almost do the thing for temporary relief. His lack of control over his body is evidence that he is insane and not guilty of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Black Cat Suspense Have you ever wonder why "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" are both scary stories? "Well the reason is that they both have the cause–and–effect relationships of mental illness, hatred, murder, and guilt. What are the cause– and–effect relationships that "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" have that cause intense suspense for the reading audience? In "The Black Cat" the main character tells us his story in prison. In "The Tell– Tale Heart" the main character told us this while in prison: "It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night." (Poe 1) The main characters from both stories are unknown but we know this fact about the two, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So what the main character in "The Black Cat" means by "Phantasm" is that he was having hallucinations by means of guilt. In "The Tell–Tale Heart", the main character said in a shouting, psychotic voice: "It is the beating of his hideous Heart!" (Poe 2) The main character said that because his mind was playing tricks on him. It is the same reason why the main characters in both stories had hallucinations, they both had guilty consciences. This is the fourth important factor in the cause–and–effect relationships that causes intense suspense for the reading audience. What did we learn from these paragraphs? Well we've learned that the four topics in "The Tell–Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" are mental illness, hatred, murder, and guilt. How important are the cause–and–effect relationships and those four topics? These four topics and the cause–and–effect relationships are important factors to understanding why these two stories cause intense suspense for the reading audience. • 3. What Is The Purpose Of The Black Cat THE BLACK CAT is an original sci–fi, time–travel, action–thriller. There is also a compelling and "timeless" romance story that is skillfully interwoven throughout the script. The script offers a thoughtful visionary and cautionary world that explores solid moral questions about changing our past, present, and future. At the core of the plot is a fascinating and complex hero, Danny. Aptly known as the BlackCat, who can see in the darkness, he drives this story. The plot centers on the battle and struggle over control of our destiny. Stones hold the key to changing the past and future. Danny is clearly the rouge hero, who battles a worthy adversary in Rose, who wants to control everyone's destiny. They are compelling opponents battling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It should be noted that on page 61, when the story transitions to 1949, there's a jarring sense like one is watching a different film. Eventually, this feeling fades. For the most part, the plot and series of sequences feel easy to follow until the midpoint and then around page 75. This is when stronger confusion emerges. It's a smart and very satisfying payoff. On the other hand, Rose claiming she loves Danny and that he loves her, doesn't feel credible or authentic. Rose definitely is seductive, but the dialogue doesn't fully ring true. The ending is sweet and gratifying, although it might be challenging to convince the audience that just after Gabrielle tells him about the death of Frank that he proposes. The issue or concern might be that the audience isn't clear on the timeline and when his death

  • 5. Comparing The Black Cat And The Tell-Tale Heart Both "The Black Cat" and "The Tell–Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe has a dark side that arises from each narrator. Both short stories start with the reassurance of the narrator's sanity. This is especially ironic because both turn out to be completely mad. In the short stories both narrators have some sort of trigger that sets them off and exposes there mad man tendencies. In "The Tell–Tale Heart" Poe's narrator has an obsession with the old man's vulture of an eye. He speaks of it like a person itself while it is only just an eye upon the man's face. In the short story "The Black Cat" the narrator portrays himself as an average man with a wife and pets living in a house. As the story plunges further there is conflict between him and his ... With such a great assortment of choices I was surprised that I did not read "The Black Cat" prior to this class. I enjoyed the story immensely. The portrayal of an alcoholic's decline turning into a deranged person was powerful. The way the animals are talked about in the story makes the almost life like. I like the comparison of Pluto's hanging to the family house being burned down on the same night. The explanation and cover up of the large giant cat with a rope on its neck was interesting but the new cat showing up looking like Pluto was mind–blowing. The new cat makes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I do not discount that reading as it clearly depicts slavery and racism. But, I think to Kill a Mockingbird would have been an excellent choice to follow that reading assignment. I love the quote "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." I think this quote still holds true today. We all remember that in the book To Kill a Mockingbird is about a young girl who is growing up. She has the typical life of playing, having fun, and creating friendships with people. But what is most impactful was her introduction and having to learn about things such as life's unfairness, weak people, and people with a different skin color. To Kill a Mockingbird" is the perfect example of racism and gender inequality. The reoccurring theme of racism depicts just how much of an impact racism has on the daily life of individuals. The lesson we learned is that people can have kindness, sympathy and support it does not depend on your color of skin, your social status, or public opinion. It all depends on a man's soul. • 7. The Black Cat Analysis Edgar Allan Poe is one of the many poets known for using dark imagery to further the visual content of his text. In doing so, Poe uses his narrator in "The Black Cat" to communicate to his readers "a series of household events" in which he uses details that horrify and haunt the readers. Opening with mystery, the readers are able to quickly infer that Poe's narrator lacks common sense and rationality and that is what causes him become impulsive in his actions towards his loved ones. In this story, Poe writes through the eyes of an unnamed deceptive narrator who maltreats his wife and cat and relates how alcoholism and his oblivious views led him to their murder. By writing through the eyes of his narrator, Poe breaks the fictional barrier and creates a realism in the story which arouses his readers with the details about the murder of his wife and beloved cat. Poe's use of dark imagery contributes to the overall mood of the story by utilizing characterization, diction, and anxiety through his narrator. Poe develops the dark personality of his narrator throughout the story and allows the story to be told from a first person point of view which makes the story seem realistic. The narrator includes detailed descriptions of the torturous and murderous acts that were committed in this story and by doing this, the narrator holds the reader's attention. Poe characterizes the black cat in the story by naming the cat "Pluto" which, according to Moreland and Rodriguez, is "...an obvious reference to the ruler of Hades" (Moreland, Rodriguez 209). The name of the cat is significant for this reason; Pluto––the black cat, is named after a dark Greek ruler, which shows Poe wanted to characterize the black cat as an evil being. Poe illustrates the black cat as evil by describing it as entirely black and by saying that when the cat bit him "the fury of a demon instantly possessed" (Poe 5) him. Early in the story, when Poe first introduces the black cat he mentions an "ancient popular notion, which regarded all black cats as witches in disguise" (Poe 4), by adding this to the description of the cat it creates a dark image which foreshadows how the narrator feels later in the story towards the feline. • 9. Symbolism In The Black Cat In the short tale The Black Cat, Edgar Allen Poe expresses his hate and love for cats. With twisting words and mystical views, the tale takes place in the 1840's. Within this classic American Literature Gothic tale, symbolism is depicted throughout with many plot twists the story is told. While The Black Cat was written to achieve an effect of "shocking insanity" in this time period it did just that. In this first person narrative the narrator tells of the readers of his decline from sanity and madness, all because of an obsession with two or maybe one black cat. This short story easily achieved the effect and use of symbolism. In this tale the use of symbolizes are represented by the setting, the cat or cats, the house and his wife, all of which are a great representation of Edgar Allen Poe's imaginary and life. In the tale the setting was a sign of symbolism. Poe represented this in the plot development with a diverse word choice, and detailed character development. In most cases, the setting is usually indelible to a story, but The Black Cat relies little on this element. Poe used detailed character development so the reader begins to empathize with the characters. With just enough character information given out at the time of the horrific event the reader will feel connected. This tale could have occurred anywhere and can be placed in any era. This makes the setting the weakest element of The Black Cat. Poe does not say a certain location of where it takes place leaving the reader to wonder. The most obvious of symbolic references in this story is the first and the second cat that arrives in the tale and the name chosen, Pluto. Pluto leads his owner down the path toward insanity and loss of reason (Lombardi, Esther). As Poe states in the following quote Pluto is his best friend, why would he have killed them? "Pluto––this was the cat's name––was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he attended me wherever I went about the house. It was even with difficulty that I could prevent him from following me through the streets" (Edgar Allen Poe). Could the man in the tale have been a drunken fool, or suffered for a psychotic illness. Black Cat Consequences The Consequences Behind Bloodshed In his short story "The Black Cat," Edgar Allan Poe uses the drastic changes in one's mind by drinking alcohol and the pressure of guilt to create an unreliable narrator, because it can easily modify the narrator's judgement towards his cat, Pluto. Before the narrator starts drinking, he loves animals and contain a variety of them in his house. Right after the addiction of alcohol, the narrator physically and verbally abuses his pets, which causes "one night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of [his] haunts about town, [he] [fancy] that [Pluto] [avoids] [his] presence" (Poe 5). • 11. The Black Cat Insanity In the story "The Black Cat", by Edgar Allen Poe, there is a fine line between sanity and insanity. "The Black Cat" tells the story of him having great admiration for animals, especially his black cat, Pluto. Poe loved this cat more than any animal and had a friendship with it for several years. He started getting more irritable day by day, but refrained from harming the cat. One night, Edgar Allen Poe was drunk, and Pluto bit his hand. Poe then grabbed a knife and gauged the cat's eye out. • 14. The Black Cat Research Paper The Black Cat: Revenge of a Witch In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat", a person will read an incredulous story that unfolds into a great tale of mystery, murder, and madness. Poe, proven to be a phenomenal author, seems to outdo himself with this particular narrative. You cannot help but wonder who the real culprit is and if the wife's superstitions are true in the beginning. However, is it possible that there were more reasons why these events took place? Is it naГЇve to blame the cat for this destruction of man or had it all been happening due to his rage and drunkenness? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His hatred and rage could be the main side effect of the heavy drinking he was doing. As the story progressed, he was noticeably more violent and harmful, but could this have been his reason to lose sanity? Another reason would be that his wife, rarely talked about in this book, was driving him mad. She had a very loving and accepting character background. He had later said, "The moodiness of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind; while, from the sudden, frequent, and ungovernable outbursts of a fury to which I now blindly abandoned myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas! Was the most usual and the most patient of sufferers." His wife never complained of the horrible deeds he was doing. She acted like she was blind to the fact he was progressively building onto his hatred. The cat's unshakable loyalty and the wife's undying love for a drunken man could have been too much for him. • 15. The Black Cat Analysis The Tale of Two Cats The title of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" leads the reader to believe the short story is about one black cat. However, almost in the middle of the story a second cat emerges. Are the second cat one of the nine lives of the first cat? The narrator seems to be struggling with this question and considering the genre is horror, I as the reader also struggles with this question. Since the narrator hints the second cat may be the same as the first, the reader must look at the similarities and differences of the two cats; such as, they both loved the narrator, both are missing an eye, and the cats have a difference in the color of their fur. In the short story, both cats follow the narrator around the house. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the narrator looked at the cat or thought of what he had done, he would only become more infuriated and one day he finished the job by hanging the cat in a tree. The second cat was missing an eye when the narrator found him. He found the second cat in one of the establishments he frequented to drink his alcohol. The morning after the narrator brought the second cat home he discovered, "like Pluto, it had also been deprived of one of its eyes" (Poe). No one knows how the cat lost the eye, but it led the narrator to distain it more because it reminded him of Pluto and what he had done to the first cat. However, the loss of the eye caused the narrator's wife to love the cat more. After looking at these similarities, we can see why the narrator was questioning if this was Pluto or a different cat, but we also must look at an important difference. Such as, the difference in the color of their fur. The first cat was a solid color with no other markings. Pluto, the first cat, was a solid black cat without a single white hair. The narrator states, "the cat was remarkably large and beautiful animal, entirely black" (Poe). The wife made frequent comments saying black cats were known to be witches. • 16. Comparison Of Horror Fiction And The Black Cat To begin , one must understand what the aspect of horror fiction is. Horror fiction to my understanding is a type of writing that propel certain emotions onto a reader. It more commonly is a piece of writing that offers the reader the feelings of shock , fear or some form of anxiety. It has been seen that quite frankly horror stories offer similarities in the forms of brutality, charters turning from that of being stable to loosing their sanity and lastly being provided with death of a creature, however later finding out they are in a way still alive. It shows how the person can go from a stable individual to loosing all sanity which was also a characteristic offered in The Black Cat. While The Black Cat offers the psychology of the unknown man we are also offered this particular element in Poe's The Tell Tale Heart. One can see signs of deterioration of the narrator. He continually lets it be known that he is fine and has no symptoms of anger however his actions state other wise. The narrator also suggest that no feelings of remorse or guilt can be noted almost as if no wrong has been done. The narrator is going through a downward spiral of psychological matters which is an element offered on horror fiction as this allows the reader to achieve those emotions of anxiety, fear and again suspense. • 17. Insanity In The Black Cat By Edgar Allan Poe Poe's The Black Cat is essentially an extended metaphor for insanity, specifically resulting from obsession, and the psychopathic complexity of human nature. Through the narrator's reactions to and Poe's incorporation of various symbols, the struggle the narrator faces with his conscience and moral surface. The symbols that Poe employs, especially those relating to the black cats, work together to form the convention of horror and suspense, as well as to convey the alteration of morality through factors such as substance abuse and perverseness (Lazim 60). For example, the color of the cats, black, is typically associated with aspects such as evil and death, both of which are embedded within the narrator and his story. Black cats, themselves, are usually associated with bad luck and superstition as well; this idea is even alluded to by the narrator's wife, although the narrator claims his wife was never serious (Poe 4). Furthermore, there were specific instances that occurred that related primarily to the narrator and his mental stability, motives, and emotions. For example, the hanging of his companion, Pluto, is symbolic of the narrator's inability to accept love as a result of his increasing irritability as well as his deteriorating stability and mental well–being. ... Different types of materials were used such as wood, Styrofoam, cardboards, pom poms, etc. to enhance the visual presentation of the story. Since the black cat is the major character in the story, I chose the color black, white, gray as the majority colors of the presentation. These colors really blend well with the black cat. I also think that the story involves tragedy, murder, hate, and the color black represent those. There are also silver, brown, red, and different colors used for the alcohol bottles. These materials were used to show how the cat becomes sort of a mirror to the narrator to see how he transformed himself into a totally different person and allowed him to see the changes that happened to him. I also used black pom poms to create a real feel (texture wise) to the cat. In the story, the narrator proclaims his purpose for penning is to clear his conscience. He is aware of his human condition and his pain filled being. He even claims that he succumbs to the spirit of perverseness within him, as if it were a natural course. After his actions of violence in maiming and murdering the black cat, he becomes regretful for what he had done, and in some attempt at redemption seeks out another cat as a replacement. This is exactly what leads him to hate the new black cat so much. It is as if it was resurrected, the missing eye is an exact replica of his first crime and the new white gallows–like patch is a mark of his evil act. It makes him more self–conscious of himself and to all that he had done. The more the cat likes him, the more he hates it. To escape the judgment and belittlement of others, we conceal our true inner selves in which the iniquity hides. As the storyteller states in "The Black Cat", initially, he buried his mental monster underneath kindness and humanity. In fact, the narrator declares, "From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions" (Baym and Levine 718). In another burst of pure rage, the murderer attempts to strike the cat, but his wife stops him, and his loyalty shifts as quickly as a flash of lightning. He "withdrew [his] arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain" (723). Frankly, the narrator's wife seemed as if she was most likely frail and withdrawn. Therefore, it was not as if she had the ability or inclination to attack her husband in any way, so the narrator's immediate reaction was in no way self–defense. In other words, he had no reason to "accidentally" kill his innocent wife. Moreover, after the completion of the deed, he did not immediately run to the police, yelling, "I killed my wife! I killed my wife!" He actually "deposited the body against the inner wall" of a cellar (723)! Yet, in order to possess intent, one must have a motive. Well, what exactly was the author's motive? Perhaps, his motive lay in the fact that he wanted to be alone with no responsibilities and no morals. Although the passage does not directly state this notion, it indicates that his wife stood on the foundation of right and wrong and that she represented what he no longer had nor wanted–morality. Thus, to rid himself of something he had thrown away a long time ago, the narrator purposely murdered his wife in "The Black Cat". His ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As the story develops, his actions grow more grotesque and immoral as he tries to rid himself of the animal. In one of these instances, a fire forces the narrator to move from his well–tended house to a smaller, run–down building, which represents the deterioration of his state of mind. The focus is taken off of the grotesque details of abuse and murder but shifted towards the narrator's inner conflict. Poe's obsession with exploring the human psyche is prevalent in this short story. Readers struggle to understand the logic, if any, behind the actions of the unreliable narrator as he grapples with his own mind, or a supernatural force. Edgar Allan Poe combines internal conflict and symbolism to express the theme of transformation from innocence to evil and introduce a schizophrenic mindset that cannot comprehend reality from supernatural occurrences. A descent into madness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edgar Allan Poe's use of symbolism in "The Black Cat" subtly hints at the supernatural aspect of the story. The "Evil Eye" which plagued the protagonist of "The Tell–Tale Heart" makes a reappearance. Both Pluto and the second black cat have only one eye, and the narrator describes the second black cat's "solitary eye of fire" (Poe 401) as he alarmed the investigators of the corpse in the tomb. The narrator's claim of love for Pluto and the subsequent black cat developing into blind hatred and blame placed on them also mirrors the protagonist in ""The Tell–Tale Heart." The narrator blames the cats for his affliction. Pluto signifies innocence, disfigured and eventually murdered by the narrator at the beginning of his spiral into madness. Pluto's "Evil Eye" is quickly destroyed by the narrator, but is replaced with the phantasm. The phantasm haunts the narrator, appearing after the house burns down and destroys his wealth. The phantasm also appears on the second black cat's chest, tormenting the narrator with a reminder of his first murder. The second black cat is the narrator's shot at redemption. His similarity to Pluto and willingness to endure the narrator's abuse gave him a chance to redeem his innocence. Once the protagonist commited the murder of his wife, the black cat gave up on him. Although the cats represent innocence and redemption, the narrator's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Foreshadowing In The Black Cat In "The Black Cat", the use of foreshadowing serves to emphasize the theme that sinners will be punished by justice. For example, when the narrator visits the ruins of his house, he sees on a wall "the figure of a gigantic cat [with] a rope about the animal's neck", foreshadowing how the narrator will be put to death for murder. Moreover, he describes the form of white hair on his second cat's chest as "the representation [...] of the GALLOWS! ‒ oh, mournful and terrible engine of Horror and of Crime ‒ of Agony and of Death!", further foreshadowing his execution. The fact that the motif of death by hanging always comes back to the narrator and that the gallows represents to him an instrument of "Crime and Death" implies that suppressing his inner ... • 41. The Black Cat Symbolism Essay Edgar Allan Poe's "The Black Cat" is the story of a man who battles addiction. Poe uses a variety of symbolism to portray how the narrator's life spirals out of control due to his inability to maintain his sobriety. The story's narrator and main character gives us a glimpse into his childhood: he had a "tenderness of heart" and he was "especially fond of animals, and was indulged by my parents with a great variety of pets". The animals and pets that the narrator speaks about are symbolic for different drugs. The propensity to addiction was introduced to him as a tender child, by his parents. Once a full blown addict, the narrator gets married to woman who is also an addict. The narrator states that his wife has a "disposition not uncongenial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After stepping out on his wife and religion just this once, he intends to return to her and God and remain faithful for the rest of his life. On Brown's journey he meets a man who claims to have known Brown's father. Brown insists that he is from a "race of honest men and good Christians". This man represents two things in the story, a pimp who is taking Brown to meet a lady of the night, and the devil who is testing Brown's faith. Throughout the story, the woods that Brown travels with the man represent a house of sex. After sitting in the brothel for some time, Brown begins to recognize many of its customers. He hears his Minister, his Deacon, and eventually he sees his Faith. Brown watches as Faith is accepted in to the orgy–like atmosphere.
