IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
The first thing I looked at was the brief and how I was going
to approach it
I choose to approach my brief in stages, beginning with
research first. By researching I came to the conclusion of
what genre of music I wanted my music video to be and
researched further into the genre of R&B as this was my final
decision and then researched into the conventions of R&B
music.
While doing research into the conventions of R&B music, I
looked at things such as-
•A selection of music videos
•A wide range of R&B music adverts
•R&B CD album covers and Digi-packs
Later coming to the final conclusion of what song myself and
my group member wanted to do, which was “Me&You –
Cassie” we did research into the song and the background
history of the artist herself .
Once we finalised the song, we began to plan out the music
video, starting off with the treatment and the story board to
help along the way of filming and began to plan for the
ancillary products too.
CONCEPTS AND
THEORIES
Our music video did not have a narrative, we did not want
the video to tell a story, we wanted it performance based.
One theorist that this can relate to is Andrew Goodwin!
Andrew Goodwin’s theory has 6 key features that are used in
a music video. One of these features says ‘Voyeurism often
plays a major part, especially in relation to females.’ which
basically means that in music videos females are portrayed
in a sexual nature in order to sell the song. By doing this it
draws in the audience and makes people want to watch the
video.
FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF
R&B PRODUCTS
R&B music videos range from performance based videos to
narrative based videos. The conventions vary in R&B music
videos are they are adventurous with the music videos.
Beyonce- single ladies, is a
performance based music video,
it has no narrative, just singing
and dancing, all though she has
tried to link some of the lyrics to
the actions she does.
Rihanna ft. Drake – What’s my name, is mix
of narrative of slight performance, it begins
with a story line and ends with a story, with
little performance in-between.
In R&B music videos, the artists are made to
look their very best, wearing designer
clothes, up with the recent fashion trends,
want to look attractive in the video and uses
the aid of dance, along with various
locations, nice cars and houses in the
background to attract the audience and use a
lot of back up dancers in dance performance
videos.
When it comes to the CD covers they like to be quite
experimental and make the CD covers stand out with the use
of editing and fancy font and colours. They normally have a
simple layout but have a lot of editing done to make it look
unique and different. Conventions vary from the use of
bright colours, glamorous and attractive images on the front
cover.

How my media product uses R&B conventions

  • 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
  • 2. The first thing I looked at was the brief and how I was going to approach it
  • 3. I choose to approach my brief in stages, beginning with research first. By researching I came to the conclusion of what genre of music I wanted my music video to be and researched further into the genre of R&B as this was my final decision and then researched into the conventions of R&B music.
  • 4. While doing research into the conventions of R&B music, I looked at things such as- •A selection of music videos •A wide range of R&B music adverts •R&B CD album covers and Digi-packs Later coming to the final conclusion of what song myself and my group member wanted to do, which was “Me&You – Cassie” we did research into the song and the background history of the artist herself .
  • 5. Once we finalised the song, we began to plan out the music video, starting off with the treatment and the story board to help along the way of filming and began to plan for the ancillary products too.
  • 7. Our music video did not have a narrative, we did not want the video to tell a story, we wanted it performance based. One theorist that this can relate to is Andrew Goodwin! Andrew Goodwin’s theory has 6 key features that are used in a music video. One of these features says ‘Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.’ which basically means that in music videos females are portrayed in a sexual nature in order to sell the song. By doing this it draws in the audience and makes people want to watch the video.
  • 9. R&B music videos range from performance based videos to narrative based videos. The conventions vary in R&B music videos are they are adventurous with the music videos. Beyonce- single ladies, is a performance based music video, it has no narrative, just singing and dancing, all though she has tried to link some of the lyrics to the actions she does. Rihanna ft. Drake – What’s my name, is mix of narrative of slight performance, it begins with a story line and ends with a story, with little performance in-between.
  • 10. In R&B music videos, the artists are made to look their very best, wearing designer clothes, up with the recent fashion trends, want to look attractive in the video and uses the aid of dance, along with various locations, nice cars and houses in the background to attract the audience and use a lot of back up dancers in dance performance videos.
  • 11. When it comes to the CD covers they like to be quite experimental and make the CD covers stand out with the use of editing and fancy font and colours. They normally have a simple layout but have a lot of editing done to make it look unique and different. Conventions vary from the use of bright colours, glamorous and attractive images on the front cover.
