Hi Guys,
When you come across some quieter times, look at targeting your back list: This
is a very easy method of gaining more work. You could start by thanking clients
for their past custom. Clients also like acknowledgment that you have been
conscientious regarding their gardening needs, whether it’s for a Once-off, Clean
up , Gutter Cleaning or a Regular service. By contacting them with a very simple
letter expressing your interest to quote on any gardening work they anticipate
carrying out over the next 12 months, and any suggestions on what you can do to
enhance your client’s garden/yard. This shows them firstly, that you value their
custom, but also makes them think about work that may need doing around their
premises in the coming year. It also indicates to them your professional attitude
to your business, and the value you place on their custom. Use the follow-up
letters to reiterate the positive aspects of your service, and gently urge the past
client to take the next step to book your service. You could also offer them a
special sale of some of your services for a limited-time offer. Please see example
letter below that you can use.

Example Letter:
Dear (CLIENT NAME),
It has been an absolute pleasure maintaining your lawn this season. I hope you
have found my service more than satisfactory.
Last time, I was at your property, I noticed that your gutters need cleaning.
For this month, I am currently offering a special on this service. Also, while
looking around your garden, I was thinking a few roses would enhance the
left hand side of your garden bed. If you would be interested, I can source
these for you and arrange a time with you to carry out this service as well as
clean your gutters.
Don’t hesitate to call (MOB #) or email (XX@XXX) and let me know if I can
help in any way.
Thanks again for choosing Jim’s Mowing (TERRITORY).
Yours sincerely,
(Your Name)

News from the office:
Please be very aware when doing any landscaping jobs or jobs that are out of the
realm of just mowing, to document at every stage. For example; keep all
correspondence between yourself and the client regarding specifications,
materials used and the client’s expectations of the outcomes.. We recently had a
case where a franchisee had built a retaining wall and received a complaint from
the client regarding the construction of the retaining wall. Fortunately, this
franchisee had kept all correspondence, including Facebook communications,
which proved to be valuable.
Once again, we stress the importance of doing duplicate quotes and get the client
to sign off on all work to be carried out.

The speed of searching your client list through the “Filter” box has been

WH&S
Avoid a downhill disaster:
5. Truck, buses and larger vehicles with trailers MUST use a lower gear— Not the
foot brake to stay in control when driving down a steep road.
In S.A. Under Road Traffic Act Rule 108, you must use a low gear when you are
driving a truck, bus or heavy trailer with the sign, Heavy Vehicle, Trucks & Buses
Must Use Low Gear. You must drive in a gear that is low enough to limit the
speed of your vehicle without using the foot brake, i.e. using the engine to brake.
Why is it important?
If you lose control of your vehicle on a steep road the result could be deadly, you
could kill or cause serious injuries to yourself or others. Serious penalties can
also apply. When descending on a steep road, heavy vehicles need to travel at a
safe speed the whole way down. Foot brakes can’t do this alone. These brakes
can and do easily overheat and lose their effect, and you could lose control of
your vehicle. If you use the foot brake or do not use the gear that’s low enough to
slow down the vehicle, the brake linings can lose their grip and you lose control.
Therefore make sure the vehicle is in a low gear before starting to drive downhill,
so you will be able to stay in control and keep our roads safe for everyone.
How to descend Safely:
As soon as you see the Heavy Vehicle Must Use Low Gear sign, you must start
slowing down and switching to a lower gear. This means you will be using the
right gear before starting to descend, and will not need to use the foot brake when
driving down the hill. As you descend, you must use the engine or exhaust brake
the whole way down the hill. This will give you good control and help to avoid
danger.
Don’t Risk it!
Apart from risking the lives of yourself and others, if you fail to obey Rule 108
you could also face large penalties. A maximum court imposed fine of $2,500 or
a $334 expiation fee (plus victims of crime levy, $60) and three demerit points
can also apply. You could also lose your licence or be imprisoned for careless or
dangerous driving. Imagine the affect this will have on your business and
livelihood.
