Microspheres are a potential approach for gastric retention as floating drug delivery systems. They can remain in the gastric region for extended periods, increasing gastric residence time and bioavailability while reducing dosing frequency. Literature reviews discuss preparation methods, characterization, advantages, and applications of microspheres for sustained drug release. One study prepared glibenclamide microspheres using non-aqueous emulsion solvent evaporation with magnesium stearate. The optimized formulation showed 11.5 hours of sustained drug release in vitro.

microballoons as a novel approach in gastro-retention floating drug delivery system
(FDDS) microballoons (hollow micrsospheres) hold certification as one of the
potential approaches for gastric retention. microballoons are spherical empty
particles without core and can remain in gastric region for delayed periods. They
significantly increase the grastic residence time of medication,thereby enhance
bioavability, improves patient compliance by reducing dosing frequency ,lessen the
medication waste , enhance retention of medications that are less soluble at a higher
pH environment . They also summarised preparation methods , charecterization
,advantages ,disadvantages, mechanism of drug release from microballoons

dispersant and droplet stablizer . the yield varies from 90-97% and encapsulation
efficacy is up to 94 % . the desired sizes of microspheres were obtained when the
stirring waas out at 600 rpm . the in - vitro dissolution profile of optimized
formulation batch i.e, f5 is resulted up 11.5 hours .
