The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers and keep from
disobedience to God in reverence for Him and piety (particularly in your duties toward one another
as brothers), so that you may be shown mercy (granted a good, virtuous life in the world as
individuals and as a community, and eternal happiness in the Hereafter)

4. FRATERNITY IN ISLAM
• One of the strongest bonds is that of brotherhood/sisterhood:
• The parent/child relationship is one at which individuals are not at the same
level due to the hierarchy.
• Islam invites the believers to consider one another as brothers/sisters of one
another.
• Why did Islam “discriminate” and not include ALL humanity in these bonds of
brotherhood/sisterhood?

5. UNITY IN THE ISLAMIC TRADITIONS
“Surely the believers – in relation to the mercy and compassion and affection (that
they show for one another) - are the same as one body. Therefore, if one part of the
body is feeling pain, then it complains about this pain to the other parts of the body
through a fear and hurt (so that the body can help the hurt or injured part).”

7. 30 RESPONSIBILITIES BETWEEN BROTHERS
1. Forgiveness and mercy;
2. Not to expose their secrets;
3. Fulfill your promises to them;
4. Go to visit them when they’re sick;
5. Take part in their funeral when they pass away;
6. Accept their invitation when they call you and accept any gifts they give you;
7. Reciprocating and giving them gifts.

8. FRATERNITY IN ISLAM | LESSONS TO LEARN
1. The bond of brotherhood/sisterhood is achieved only under the banner of true faith (al-Iman)
– as true cohesion cannot take place through: economics, politics, race, geographic origins,
historical ties, etc… [ ماّناالمؤمنوناخوة ]
2. Brotherhood and sisterhood, built on the foundation of true faith is not tied to one’s age,
occupation, educational level or wealth. [ ماّناالمؤمنوناخوة ]
3. One must never consider themselves to be better than any other person []اخوة - yes perhaps
with respect to their children, the parents may have a “favourite”, however amongst brothers,
this should not be the case – they are all equal.

9. FRATERNITY IN ISLAM | LESSONS TO LEARN
4. In order to establish peace and love, one needs to make use of terms of endearment [ اخوة
]فاصلحوا
5. Everyone within the family of believers must do all that they can to bring an end to disputes,
rivalries, etc.. and to ensure that peace is established and maintained amongst everyone –
not just a certain segment [.]فاصلحوا
6. Those who are working to establish peace amongst the religious brothers/sisters need to
consider themselves as brothers/sisters of one another as well [ فاصلحوابینأخویكم ].

10. FRATERNITY IN ISLAM | LESSONS TO LEARN
7. Establishing peace and amicable relations amongst individuals is something which one may
face tribulations and difficulties in doing and so we always have to keep God in the fore-front
[ فاصلحوا...ّللا اتقوا و ].
8. Peace and tranquility is the precursor to the descent of the Mercy of the Divine [ فاصلحوا...
.]ترحمون
9. A society which lacks taqwa will always be deprived of the Divine Mercy [ترحمون كمّلعل ّللا .]اتقوا
