CHAPBOOK

Project Overview
Design and produce a 5.5” x 8.5” type-dominant (or type
only) modern chap book. Must be bound in some fashion
and contain between 12 and 20 pages + cover. Contents
must include a healthy mix of traditional text and stylistically
relevant typography.
The subject matter is up to you, but should be suitable and
beneficial for your portfolio and public distribution. It can
include personal writing and other creative work (poems,
lyrics, anecdotes, achievements, tragedies, love, humor, etc.)
Must include:
1. Two or more perfectly executed books
2. Process PDF/Casestudy
3. Separate chapbook PDF
4. 300ppi portfolio JPEG images (hero shots) sized to 7 inches
along the longest side

Chapbook History
Chapbooks are small, cheap-to-produce booklets that touch
on a single subject back in the 16th - 19th century. Historically,
they were printed on a single sheet that was folded into octavo
or duodecimo formats and held poems, folk stories, ballads,
and topically relevant issues – politics, social affairs, religious
tracts, etc. They were extremely important for the dissemination
of popular literature among the lower classes, for whom tra-
ditional books were prohibitively expensive. Today, chapbook
production is a niche market that really only exists in literary
circles among self-publishing writers and small, independent
fiction publishers to whom the intimate, affordable nature of
the chapbook is still appealing.

Auras are the manifestation of your body and soul’s energy.
Auras can change from minute to minute, or they may remain
a steady shade and intensity for a long period. Many things
will affect the shade of each layer of people’s aura colors,
from simple things like mood to major events, such as spiritu-
al development.

Stiching Style
Coptic stitch bookbinding (also called Coptic binding) is a way of binding pages
of a book together without glue or staples. Like other types of hand binding, it’s
an ancient art form. And even though it’s not the most common way of binding
books these days, it’s a beautiful craft that adds style to handmade notebooks
and sketchbooks.

About the Flow Project:
Influenced by Scandinavian and Japanese design
“While the book is restrained in its overall approach, playful typography and unexpected
layouts give an element of surprise and a change of pace. In the collectors’ section, the
layout is more classical, but the quotation marks in a duck egg blue jump around the
pages as you progress through the book. This is reversed in the makers’ section, where
the typography becomes more playful, and the page numbers remain static.”

I chose Arboria for the headers for it’s minimalistic and simple aesthetic. I wanted
something that wouldn’t be overpowering, but would stand out due to it’s unique
cap height.
About the Founders:
Type-Ø-Tones is a typographic design company founded in 1990 by Joan Barjau,
Enric Jardí, Laura Meseguer and José Manuel Urós.
“They’re a loosely-knit collective of independent individuals, each with their own
activities as graphic designers, writers and teachers. They have been making and
publishing fonts since the early days of desktop type design and pioneered digital
techniques that are now commonplace. Their fonts represent an approach that
is, perhaps, typically Catalan: simultaneously adventurous and serious, witty and
well-conceived.”

I chose Adobe Garamond Pro for the body paragraph because of it’s Humanist
Typeface. Since my project is based on human auras, it only made sense to me to
use a Humanist typeface since it evokes personality and warmth. As if a human
hand wrote it.

Their program started in 1989 as an in-house type foundry at Adobe, brought to-
gether to create original typefaces of exemplary design quality, technical fidelity,
and aesthetic longevity.

Most prominently recog-
nized as a cheerful and
lively hue, Yellow inspires
positivity. A bright Yellow
aura is a curious free
spirit who restlessly strives
to achieve their goals. Yellow is
constantly buzzing with grand ideas
and adopting many hobbies. They
have a knack for multitasking, being
open-minded, and skilled at adapt-
ability. A goal-orientated mindset is
good, but the challenge is in recogni-
tion: their hardwork can make them
completely blinded to the abundance
they have already achieved. A dull Yel-
low is a perfectionist caught in their
own cobwebs. They are workaholics
who take too much pride with their
work that it eventually causes massive
burnout. Yellow will needto under-
stand that failureis essentialto growth.
It is okay to not always be perfect.
Allow others to help and share the
burden. After all, a plant cannot grow
with the sun alone—it'll dry up.
04 GREEN
There is a sense of renewal, freedom,
self-control and harmony with Green.
A bright Green aura is a grounded
individual who is highly in tune with
who they are. They follow a growth
mindset to achieve harmony and
abundance with their relationships,
money, and individuality. Although
a growth mindset is good, it can be
confused with a disparity of wealth
mindset: the belief that they or
things are not enough. A dull Green
indicates an individual reflecting and
cultivating a future-oriented mind-
set. The challenge is in the mind: the
disconnect between past, present,
and future selves. In order to move
pass this stagnancy, Green needs to
let go of self-doubts and stop seeking
validation from others. They must
establish balance by learning how to
trust themselves and believe that
their hardwork will not go
to waste. Once they stop
resisting with this, they
will receive the love that
meets them halfway.

05 PINK
Leading with passion, kindness, and
understanding, Pink seeks to make
others feel accepted by offering an un-
matched level of sympathy. A bright
Pink aura is a peacemaker who is
always observant of others. Pink cares
about how others feel, which is why
they go to great lengths to promote
positivity. They have a knack for up-
lifting others to blossom and connect
with their heart in mind. However,
the challenge is in boundaries: too
much thoughtfulness can cause one to
forget about their own needs. A dull
Pink aura would be a peacekeeper:
they have fallen asleep to their own
desires, opinions, and feelings to avoid
disruption of the peace in relation-
ships. Pink has to come to the realiza-
tion that taking no action is also
an action. They must unlearn
their self-sabotaging habits
and learn how to provide
themselves with uncon-
ditional love first, before
doing so for others.
Where calmness is present,
so too is the color Blue. In
addition to its peaceful-
ness, Blue offers direction

past or future, which makes them as
great listeners and a friend to lean on
when the world is chaotic. Blue has a

Blue appreciates their surroundings,
but can be a little too comfortable in
where they are in life. Stillness is an
inborn skill of theirs, but long peri-
ods of it can be counterproductive.
Advice for Blue is to spend more time
connecting their unconscious with
the conscious. The goal is to discover
hidden depths about their greater
purpose and inner truth.

inner demons—no matter how many
times they fall, they will always get up.
Transformation is not always easy, but

the heart, mind, and soul. They are in
the beginning stages of learning love,
passion, and harmony. It is a chaotic,
yet beautiful process. The challenge is

lenge is protecting their vulnerability.
Turquoise may end up sacrificing a lot
and get caught up in toxic emotional
cycles. A dull Turquoise aura is stable;
they can transmute any emotional
energy through healthy outlets.They
will not go out their way to fulfill
others' emotional needs. Turquoise
understands divine timing and will
guide the way when they are called to
do so. Once a Turquoise understands
that their mission is not to fix people,
but rather to guide, they will achieve
emotional balance and preservation.

As an uplifting and encour-
aging hue, Gold wants the
best for people. A bright
Gold aura views success,
money, and victory as the
path that solves all of their
problems. Gold is often associated
with wealth, religion, and power.
When they choose to think clearly
and cut through the fluff, they will
align with prosperity. They are skilled
at building connections with their
leader-like traits. Abundance flows to
them easily because of their success
orienated mindset, but the challenge
is in self-control. How much is too
little or too much? A dull Gold aura
may feel like all of their efforts seem
to go in vain. However, what may
look like doom and failure is actually
the nearing of an end; they are about
to achieve victory, success, and their
dreams coming true. Advice for Gold
is to be more open-minded about how
they perceive failure, to be more posi-
tive, make quicker decisions, and stay
humble. Gold must realize that most
blessings disguise themselves as curses.

and becoming powerless. Purple must

A bright Silver aura holds

an innovative think, always on the go
to discover new possibilities. Silver
is future-iorientated so that they can
help the collective reach freedom
of expression and wealth. A dull
Silver aura is someone who's highly
intuitive, stable and works with the
laws of the universe. Silver holds a
powerful innerguidance that seeks to
find a promising solution to conserve,
secure, and stabilize their wealth and
stability. They lead as an example,
but they don't necessarily need to be
in the spotlight like gold. Advice for
Silver is to learn how to live more in
the present moments rather than the
future all the time.
INNOVATE EXPRESS SUCCESS
12 WHITE
As delicate as it is elegant, white
exudes beauty and grace. White
doesn’t threaten or endanger, they
love making others feel accepted and
nurtured. A bright White aura is
someone who leads with hope and
love. They are patient and holds the
skill to create peace during situations
of opposing forces. White is able to

in their mental health or environment.

becoming comfortable with stillness.

mindset is good, it can be confused

future-oriented mindset. The chal-
lenge is in the mind: the disconnect
between past, present, and future
selves. In order to move pass this
stagnancy, Green needs to let go of
self-doubts and stop seeking validation
from others. They must establish bal-
ance by learning how to trust them-
selves and believe that their hardwork
will not go to waste. Once they stop
resisting with this, they will receive
the love that meets them halfway.

Leading with passion,

Pink aura is a peacemaker who is
always observant of others. Pink cares
about how others feel, which is why
they go to great lengths to promote
positivity. They have a knack for up-

the challenge is in boundaries: too
much thoughtfulness can cause one
to forget about their own needs. A

er: they have fallen asleep to their

Summary
This project was fun and challenging to create, but because
I got the choice of personalizing it, it was more ambitious
and competitive between my expectations versus my reality.
I had learned a lot about what printers can do, the type of
printers I possibly want in the near future, how to create my
own booklet, and how to saddle stitch with wax thread. My
biggest take away from the project is typography rhythm
layouts. Creating the right kind of rhythm for the reader’s
eye is something I haven’t thought of until this project. Ref-
erencing off of my biggest inpiration, the Flow Gallery from
Pentagram, I was able to create my layouts with a rhythm
that’s minimalistic, simple, and quite aesthetically pleasing.
