MCEE Annual report 18 19

2. Selena Swartzfager
MCEE President
"My teaching experience completely changed when I came across the
MTE program in 2005. I was part of the first group that was trained and
received the MTE certification. I originally did this because I wanted to
'try something new' but little did I realize that it would completely
change my teaching career. The year following my certification I began
to teach only Economics so their resources helped shape my classes.
Eleven years later, I have incorporated SMG within my classes, started
an Economics Club at my school, built a successful AP Macroeconomics
program and possibly AP Microeconomics in the near future, and led
workshops for MCEE where I have met some great teachers. MCEE is
the 'gift that keeps on giving.'"

3. Mission…...
MCEE’s mission is to increase economic and financial
literacy in Mississippi by providing resources and
training to public and private K-12 school teachers,
empowering students to create a more prosperous
future for themselves and Mississippi.
Purpose…..
MCEE’s purpose is to enhance the quality of
instruction in economics, entrepreneurship, and
personal finance to Mississippi’s K-12 students in
ways that are academically sound and
nonpartisan. We train teachers to be proficient in
teaching students a demonstrated understanding of
economic and financial literacy in order to make
informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
All students (K-12) need to learn grade-appropriate
skills in economic and financial literacy, as well as
entrepreneurial skills. One of the primary goals of
MCEE is to ensure demonstrated progress in
improving the competency of Mississippi’s teachers
and their ability to enhance their students’
understanding of financial and economic literacy.
MCEE strives to provide the best possible economics,
financial literacy, and entrepreneurial education in
Mississippi, working together with the national
Council for Economic Education, Mississippi
Department of Education, Centers on Economic
Education, and its additional partners in the education
and business communities throughout the
state. MCEE will be guided by integrity, fiscal
soundness, good stewardship of the funding, and
believing in teachers and students enough to achieve
their optimal level of financial understanding.

The Mississippi Council on Economic Education was selected as an “Outstanding
Non-profit” in November 2018 by the Mississippi Business Journal
"MCEE has made me a better teacher. The Master Teacher of Economics program gave me the knowledge and confidence to
accept a full schedule of Economics classes, including Advanced Placement courses. Besides the instruction, I gained a net-
work of support and resources. The quality of the materials and workshops is top notch, and the Council strives to make it
affordable for every teacher interested in participating. The competitive programming sponsored by MCEE gives my students
a chance to see that there are other people learning ‘this stuff’ and that it matters. Selena and the staff make sure real world
practitioners from the world of finance and economics participate in the programs which is huge when dealing with high
school students." -Charlotte Walker, Clinton High School, Clinton, MS
